Around SBN: Is Adebayor About To Become A Full-Time Spur?

Toshmon Stevens, the 6'5" Redshirt-sophomore defensive end who seemed unable to add weight, has gained an astounding 13 lbs since Spring. He's now at 238 lbs.

If there was one player who we all thought couldn't put on enough muscle to be counted on to substantially contribute, it was Toshmon. Toshmon has always had the speed and length to be an effective pass rusher, but his lack of bulk made him unplayable against the run. Perhaps he will make a bigger contribution than many expected, both this year and in his final two.

FSU had a problem with player development. Jimbo Fisher addressed the problem by quadrupling the weight staff and bringing in specialists, the money for which came from the difference in Fisher's and Bowden's salary. The solution is working and the results show that the deficiencies in player development were bigger than even the most pessimistic fan imagined. Congrats to S&C Coach Vic Viloria and Speed/ Agility/ Nutrition coach Erik Korem for some phenomenal accomplishments in such a short period of time.

His first step is unreal.

Him adding weight/bulk potentially could make him a very useful player.

Still old staff for others!

I’m glad to see Vic has done an awesome job. I wish the other sports could receive the same.

by Noleit on Jun 20, 2010 7:23 PM EDT reply actions

I've asked about this

in previous articles and it appears from the deafening silence that no one really knows if other sports benefit from the enhancements on the football team at this time.

by 30yearnole on Jun 20, 2010 8:00 PM EDT up reply actions

On a macro level it should help ALL teams

Viloria is the head S&C Coach … oversees all programs - while some of the other sports probably won’t have the additional man power working directly with their athletes, Vic is still the one who designs programs for each sport

by Cigar City Nole on Jun 20, 2010 8:47 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Not True

Up until this point Vic and his staff has only design the program for football(And rightfully so). Hopeful his work spills over to ( Non-Revenue Sports) as Bud likes to point out. I’m told a battle is taking place about using Moore for only football. We shall see!! Title IX threw the staff a curve ball on that proposal.Maybe a new weight room for other sports would be nice.

Out the same pockets

by Noleit on Jun 21, 2010 12:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Hope they get that then

Booster donations are way up I was told. Perhaps there’s enough money to go around.

by Bud Elliott on Jun 21, 2010 12:20 PM EDT up reply actions

The two Boosters

were pissed with BB for not leaving two years ago and I’m told they wouldn’t give another dime to football, But ear marked there money for other sports. (Soccer & Softball) My Booster donation has increased since JF has taken the helm as well as many others I hope.

I thought this to be the case also.

I thought our old setup had the football guy kind of “head” several other sports, while basketball and baseball may have had their own guys. But looking at Seminoles.com it looks like he’s specifically for football.

Unreal

It is amazing that they have put 13lbs of muscle on a guy with chronic problems adding weight in such a short time. Just another indicator of how we were failing to develop our kids.

No disrespect intended but I have made it my summer resolution to focus on the positives of now and ont the negative of then whenever possible.

Ah, there's hope for Ricardo Williams after all (Provided he commits to FSU of course)

Toshman’s weight increase and the fact Carr has gained 9 pounds in a very short time helps to restore my faith in player development. Viloria and the S&C staff are really earning their money

by westcoastnolefan on Jun 20, 2010 7:41 PM EDT reply actions

If he has the frame to add weight then we shouldn't let that deter us if we feel he is talented enough.

Goes for any player, really, that isn’t at a position that’s expected to contribute immediately.

Glad to hear that

I just hope he doesn’t lose any of his athleticism. He had a string of bad luck with injury and also seemed to be on Allen’s bad side. Maybe now he can turn into a servicable player instead of just a situational one.

Has there ever been talk

of making him a backup at linebacker? The weight still seems less than what you indicated would be desirable.

The sport has always had secrets for hard gainers. Anyone who thinks it does not still happen in major college or pro sports can bury their heads in the sand. As much as I would not like to believe my favorite teams do not have some guys that sneak it I would have to lie to myself. Since all the major teams do it though, I accept it as being a level playing field.

by nolestuff on Jun 20, 2010 8:12 PM EDT reply actions

Definitely not (LB)

He’s a passrusher all day. Probably too tall to be a linebacker.

I hope my team does everything it can to win, just as other teams do ;)

I hope someone steps up like that on defense

As a leader I mean. I do not want just one star on defense physically, and if several rise up as leaders so be it, but there at least needs to be one vocal leader.

Trying not to get too hyped up about our 2010 season...

I always got burned by the polyanna, “everything is wonderful” pap published by the WC/Osceola Newspaper durning the off season. However, this defense has no where to go but UP!

by Diablo_2 on Jun 20, 2010 9:06 PM EDT reply actions

Last sentence is important to remember.

But has to be kept in perspective. While the defense does in fact have nowhere to go but up, a minimum standard should be set. I know there’s a lot to learn and adjust to but if Toshmon Stevens has gained this much weight then I’m convinced everything that needs to be taking place in this program is taking place. Tosh was already a beast of a passrusher, just severely disadvantaged. He’s now close to what Everette Brown’s playing weight was at FSU. And he isn’t coached by a frickin retard actually has a real position coach.

by truenole87 on Jun 21, 2010 4:52 AM EDT up reply actions

Lets hope others are improving as rapidly

Though in another thread where I questioned Markus White’s weight, Bud pointed out he was not all that skinny, thanks largely due to his lower body, but I still would like his upper body to get stronger and for him to learn to use it to mix tackle runners and use some bull rushers.

by nolestuff on Jun 23, 2010 12:02 AM EDT up reply actions

future wde depth.

Do you feel Toshmon is talented enough that he could challenge Jenkins? Assuming the weight gain holds and hopefully continues to progress, or is he more than likely always behind Jenkins as they are both sophomores I believe?

Can he bring something different than Jenkins (i.e. better passrush, 6’5 frame)? Or due to being the same year as Jenkins is he going up hill hoping for a break? I’m just curious to see where his potential lies in your opinions and how much his hard work in the weight room can potentially pay off for our team. As merely great depth or potentially pushing or taking starting wde spot.

by metalheadnole on Jun 20, 2010 9:24 PM EDT reply actions

Defensive linemen don't play more than 40 snaps a game at most.

Even if Jenkins plays his 40, there’s about 25-30 you gotta fill every game, to say nothing of depth for injury.

At this point I favor Jenkins but honestly, everything is all new. Most everything you and I knew about the defense is out the window.

preesh

Makes sense, and hence the uber dl depth discussions and its necessity. Thanks, i had to know exactly how much to curb my enthusiasm for the kid making some serious progress. Season = still way too far away.

Way too much offseason time in this sport, im goin nuts. lol. I’m used to being uber fanatical about my Reds, way less offseason time and nothing is happening in that offseason so i can slip into a mini fanatical coma. Great job, not a day goes by that this site isn’t checked to stay as up to date as possible:)……/bow

Hicks doesn’t look dramatically different, but I’m not surprised by this article about Toshmon. He looks like a mean, lean athlete. Think big world class sprinter.

had him with a 6’8" high jump when he was around 200 lbs in high school. If he keeps any of that spring that may be a heck of a first step.

The Walrus and the Thacker

Were walking close at hand’
They wept like anything to see
Such quantities of sand:
‘If this were only cleared away’
They said, ‘it would be grand’

If seven maids with seven mops
Swept it for half a year,
Do you suppose, ‘the Walrus said,
’That they could get it clear?’
’I Doubt it, said the Thacker,
And shed a bitter tear.

Well played, sir.

“I like the Walrus best,” said Alice, “because you see he was a little sorry for the poor oysters.”

“He ate more than the Thacker, though,” said Tweedledee. “You see he held his handkerchief in front, so that the Carpenter couldn’t count how many he took: contrariwise.”

“That was mean!” Alice said indignantly. “Then I like the Thacker best—-if he didn’t eat so many as the Walrus.”

“But he ate as many as he could get,” said Tweedledum.

This was a puzzler. After a pause, Alice began, “Well! They were both very unpleasant characters—-”
