2011 Recruiting Discussion Thread #3 [closed]

Welcome to the recruiting discussion thread.  Please refer to the Recruiting Board for information on prospects.  We are asking readers comment here instead of the recruiting board so that the recruiting board will load quicker.  Feel free to talk recruiting news, rumor, information, etc.  Amateurs and experts are all welcome.  No question is too simple.  Have a projected class?  That's fine as well.

Once this thread fills up, we will start a new one.

Also, please don't fish for information from subscription websites.  Violators will be banned from this thread.

Notes:

  • Rashad Green commits to Florida State. 06.17.10.
  • Removed RB Marlin Lane as he got a Clemson tattoo.  06.18.10.
  • Jacob Coker commits to Florida State. 06.21.10.
  • RB Devonta Freeman commits to Florida State. 06.24.10.

FAQ:

1. Are the five-star Texas RB considering FSU?
Somewhat, but FSU seems to be outside looking in.  We know FSU is in their top four both, but we don't buy the hype. Malcom Brown will most likely go to Texas, and Aaron Green will likely join his cousin at Nebraska. New article suggests that both still have FSU in their top four. Credit Coach Eliot for his Texas connections getting FSU's foot in the door.  If they decide to officially visit, we will add them to the board.
2. Where does FSU stand with Ray Drew?
Georgia is definitely in the lead. FSU is fighting with Clemson and Auburn at this point for second.  Drew was at the FSU camp over the Father's day weekend and spent time with CJF.  FSU will likely be in the process the whole way.
3. What happened to De'Joshua Johnson?

Was not able to qualify for Florida State.  Appears he needed much more work academically than what was represented...
4.  Will FSU take 2 WRs now instead of just Rashad Greene?
This is tricky.  FSU is loaded at wide receiver and doesn't need to take another.  FSU could have as many as 13 wide receivers in 2011.  That's more than optimal and is not a good use of finite resources (85scholarships).  However, this answer likely depends on the future of Jarmon Fortson (could go pro early), Taiwan Easterling (baseball, but when?), and Cam Wade (don't see many non-contributing 5th-year seniors on the roster).  The coaches will be in the best position to determine this, and we are not going to second guess their move here.
5. What's up w/ Tony Steward?

Steward camped at Clemson over the weekend.  Clemson is in desperate need of linebackers because its current crop lacks both quality and numbers.  Plus, Steward's idol is Ernie Sims, who was coached by Clemson LB coach Kevin Steele.  Steward named Clemson his leader following the camp.  Despite this, we are confident in FSU's position with him.  Steward is very respectful and has said good things about everyone.  Clemson will be an underdog in 5-7 games this season and it would be hard to see them land the top LB prospect in the nation from out of state while finishing with 5 or 6 losses.  While we are mindful that Clemson can promise him an immediate starting job playing for Ernie Sims' former coach while FSU cannot (FSU is loaded with linebacker talent), we think FSU is in good position at the present time and that FSU's position will only improve from here.  It will really depend on whether the kid prefers immediate playing time or the better program.

Also, If we took only 5 D-lineman, would it be 3 DE and 2 DT? Or is it more just the best player possible?

I haven’t talked to Therezie since that time back in early Jan. It’s hard to tell who likes who till May when spring evaluations are over. Last I read, Therezie liked Alabama and Miami, and Miami finally offered. Like Bud says below, he’s a good player. Just that FSU likes a few better.

This is espn's take on greene

ESPN’s Tom Luginbill said of the pledge, “Greene adds speed and quickness to a receiving corps that in the past few years has been more about height and size. He can stretch the field and can also be very dangerous after the catch. He is a playmaker with the ball in his hands.”

I think the recieving corps has always been extremely fast. (see Burt Reed, Rod Owens)

by xnolex on Jun 25, 2010 3:06 PM EDT reply actions

This almost seems a little insane to me.

What about last year’s receiving core was based on height and size? Besides Fortson, they all seem smallish to me. Yes, Smith and Haulsted are big but they were nonfactors last season. Our leading receiver was Rod Owens, he wasn’t huge (just incredibly precise).

In Big Ten news, Penn State just lost a “lock” to Pitt, as DT Marquise Wright from New Jersey commits to the Panthers over PSU.

They are currently in last place in Big Ten recruiting rankings, with their only notch being an unknown tight end from Delaware, who they beat Delaware and Bucknell for.

This comes on the heels of losing Brandon Phelps to Virginia last week. Penn State may actually have one of the worst classes in the Big Ten this year.

by gahnki on Jun 29, 2010 7:07 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm betting this is Joe Paterno's last season.

He left Bobby Bowden in his rearview mirror and only needs six wins this season to clear 400. The end of the season would be the best time to draw a line under a great career. His retirement at that point would be of mutual benefit to both himself and Penn State.

Both Paterno and Penn State would face a huge dropoff in talent if he stays. This is in no one’s best interest. A classy exit lets Paterno wrap up things on a positive note, while giving his university a chance to parlay that positive press attention and national exposure into some recruiting momentum. Certainly, if his 2011 recruiting class stays this dismayingly small, the program will still have scholarships to offer.

My guess is that Paterno and Penn State officials have already discussed this and sketched out a succession plan. They watched Bowden’s exit and want something better.

If you can’t sign the players to back fill them all, you might as well see the new coaches and staff can “reach” and motivate and surprise you.

FSU leads with all 3 Dwyer Recruits. O'Leary, Maggit, Brissett

One of my good friends talked with their HC(Daniels) yesterday and that is what was said. They are wanting to do something like Elam, Christian, and Clark did last year with UF. Whether or not we would take Brisset could affect if we get O’Leary.

by Volstud on Jun 29, 2010 10:29 PM EDT reply actions

Hard to believe to be honest.

Isn’t this the same coach who told our staff “It ain’t over” in regards to Elam when he commited to FSU. That was a unique and extreme case for sure, but still. I mean I’m just reporting what I’ve heard, it isn’t like this is ALL their final choices. Just at this moment in time FSU leads for all 3. Whether or not this is true in February… Who knows

The LOI binds him to that school

If he does not attend the school then he has broken his LOI and a penalty is assessed to him which is sitting out a year and losing a year of eligibility.

This is all of course if USC does not release him of the LOI.

Prep school for a year should take care of it. I’ve heard that Seantrel is deliberately avoiding the summer school at Cretin that would make him academically eligible, in order to attend the prep school of his choice, thus breaking any tie to USC.

Let himself get re-recruited after a year.

As a bonus to FSU, it will give him another year to see WTF is developing @ UM and decide he doesn’t want to be part of it.

He idolizes Ernie Sims. Steele coached Ernie.

Clemson has NOTHING at linebacker at all.

Here’s 2011 for them

Linebacker
2007 Brandon Maye 6-2 230 SR* Mobile, ALDavidson 3 stars
2008 Jonathan Willard 6-2 215 JR* Loris, SCLoris 4 stars
2009 Corico Hawkins 6-0 230 JR* Milledgeville, GABaldwin 3 stars
2009 Quadon Christian 6-3 235 SO* Lake View, SCLake View 3 stars
2009 Spencer Shuey 6-3 240 SO* Charlotte, NCSouth Mecklenburg 3 stars
2010 Justin Parker 6’3" 230 FR*/ SO Beaufort, SCBeaufort High 4 stars

Clemson telling him he can start from day one. Clemson has a tremendous defensive staff. Honestly, he’d be very smart to go there and start for Kevin for 3-4 years.

So then my question is:

why can Clemson sell their prospects on early PT, but we can’t do the same at DE?

For whatever reason I've thought there was a chance the Shazier commit to UF may come back to bite us a bit

Granted, I realize Steward is our number one LB target (And we can only take two) and I wouldn’t have risked losing Smith in order to simply pursue Shazier

It may be a little better for FSU if Clemson is viewed as the early leader. They will bear the brunt of the negative recruitment.

The issue must be addressed

Maybe Clemson just has better recruiters than we do. If they can pull Bellamy from UF and can perhaps pull Pagan (UF) and Steward (FSU). Not to mention they were Cortez’ first choice and everyone expects him to flip back over to Clemson. The writing may be on wall if everything sticks by Febuary

by westcoastnolefan on Jul 1, 2010 7:45 PM EDT reply actions

I think this recruting cycle is Jimbo & Cos 1st test

And I don’t think they should be evaluated based on who they “lost”, but on who we sign compared to our main rivals, e.g., UF, UGA, Miami, Clemson, etc. For example, I don’t care if Clemson signs a couple players that we offered as long as we have a better class as a whole when the dust settles.

Accountabilty is back in Tallahassee....

by TLHWG on Jul 1, 2010 7:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Bellamy has already been addressed. His mom is super tight with Brad Scott from high school. She’s known him 20 years.

Steward… if he wants PT, we can’t offer that.

by Bud Elliott on Jul 1, 2010 8:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Figured I'd at least broach the subject. Long ways til Febuary

Not saying the staff isn’t doing work because they are. I felt the coversation was headed in a certain direction and I decide to pull the trigger and ask the question straight out. Especially since Clemson’s staff has been in the ear of a lot of teams targets. I figured I’d get jumped on a bit for asking. But it’s all good

by jasonole59 on Jul 2, 2010 10:06 AM EDT up reply actions

We can only offer it on the DL now

LB is stacked with players, especially young ones. The secondary will be as well. And offense is looking good for a while, unless Steward wants to play Tackle.

by AMFKNole on Jul 2, 2010 12:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Exactly

My point was that the only place where we can offer anyone a real opportunity to come in and contribute is the DL. Steward isn’t a DL, therefore we can’t offer him an opportunity to come in and play meaningful snaps his first year.

Shot a Gator in Jean Shorts just to watch him die.

by AMFKNole on Jul 2, 2010 3:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Even DE

No longer in the context of Steward, but we can’t offer DEs meaningful reps? Are the coeaches that high on the current 5some I’m coming up with (Hicks, Jenkins, Stevens, Cummings, Werner) that we can’t realistically offer Drew or Newberry the same opportunity Clemson offers at LB, the chance to come in and be legitimately the best player at the position? I love Werner but you’d have to think that a 5* DE could think he has a legitimate chance of beating him out at SDE at least IMO.

Recruiting is fickle. Sometimes you simply don’t click with certain kids, or they are just not attracted to what you offer, even if it may be better for them. I wouldn’t be so quick to make broad proclamations off of little data.

Big time recruit

Why let the fact that we had some great linebackers come in last year make you change your plans? If he wants some time take it. When sims was here we had plenty of good linebackers, come in and compete.

by seminole4 on Jul 1, 2010 10:01 PM EDT reply actions

That's true and he hasn't said that FSU would be a bad opportunity for himself

But the BEST opportunity for him would be to play for a coach who puts LBs in the league, who coached his idol, who will play him as a freshman (more than likely) and who runs one of the most consistent defenses in college football.

However, I think this will be fun when Steward signs with Clemson because of Steele and then Steele moves on to a HC position not long after. No I don’t know if that’s actually in the offing, but he has to be getting close.

by seminole4 on Jul 2, 2010 3:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Well assuming Bradham goes pro

He aint starting at mike as a freshman, like him or not he won’t beat out Carr who will be a returning starter senior in 2011. Which means on the other side he’ll have a shot, but against 5* Christian Jones, 4* Telvin Smith, 3* Holmes Onkuwaife, 3* Nigel Terrell AND Vince Williams (if Williams isn’t starting at Mike or splitting time at Mike with Luc). It’s a lot to expect a player of his magnitude who wants to get on the field immediately to fight those odds. I wouldn’t blame the kid if he wasn’t a Nole, I just hope he is.

Battle for Drew ain't over yet.

Damon Evans, the athletic director at Georgia, was just arrested for DUI. This has football implications, because he may be done as AD at Georgia. This means that if Richt has a bad year, his contract will be in the hands of the new AD.

The more uncertainty surrounding a program, the better. Especially if it involves the the head coach, the person you have a strong relationship with.

I think in the end Drew will be a Nole. The longer he waits, the better our chances.

“Of course schools are still recruiting me. They all know national signing day is in February. Alabama, Miami, LSU are all recruiting me hard right now. USC has also definitely stepped it up too. They are sending me hand written letters every day.”

“I know I will definitely be taking some visits. I’m going to USC for an official visit for sure. Alabama will also be another official visit I’ll take. LSU might also be one. FSU I will visit of course. Miami I can make a day trip so I won’t need to use an official on them. I’ll also probably visit Michigan or Ohio State to check one of them out. Not sure which one yet.”
