Seminole Rising: CB/PR Greg Reid
I've decided to do a short piece on a different Nole each friday from here until the season starts. First up, fan favorite Greg Reid! Of course I included everyone's favorite highlight clip (It simply never gets old)
Adam Tolliver offers another great piece on the Noles. He does a good job of assessing Greg's positives from last year and weaknesses to improve upon at this point in his early career. Remember that Greg is a true sophomore and while he had big plays (especially in the return game) he left much to be desired on defense. He is quite the talent for new DB coach and OC Mark Stoops though.

good read
looking forward to the future stories.
am also looking forward to seeing Reid’s improvement as the season progresses.

I think he will make huge strides defensively this year.
Doesn’t always mean big stats (shut-down corners are usually avoided), but I believe he will be a defensive monster this year.
Bring back Korey Mangum — a true Nole!
Open to suggestions?
Or you got them all picked out?
Just thinking some off the radar guys we haven’t all heard about before would be interesting, but I bow to the professionals.
Shot a Gator in Jean Shorts just to watch him die.
Would definitely love suggestions
I have a few in mind that I definitely plan on doing, but popular demand could definitely sway my decisions!
FWIW
For guys that I feel will have bigger impacts than people realize in the immediate future and that I do plan on doing write ups on:
Xavier Rhodes (beast. period)
Everett Dawkins (undersized yes, but has earned his starting position despite this)
Gerald Demps (could see the field a lot if Parks doesn’t stay focused or Moody can’t stay healthy)
Bjoern Werner (already at a great playing size/weight and is physically mature enough to contribute at DE)
Chris Thompson(obviously had a decent freshman year, but I expect him to be used much more in 2010)
Rodney Smith(His size/speed blend was on display in the spring game, Fisher loves him)
Again though, I’m definitely open to suggestions. We may have some of the same guys in mind or you guys may illuminate some other options, so just let me know!
He's still small for DT
He’s finally up to 280 which would be outstanding if he were on the outside. I think he’ll still be a good player for us there this year, but I would keep him in the undersized category.
well, what are the chances he packs on another 10 lbs of muscle by camp?
(As for Werner, I like the fact he’s mature mentally as well as physically and will go all out to improve at his trade— getting married and having responsibility for someone else will do that to you!)
Apparently, Ann was wrong. :)

He's got 2 months
So we’ll see, but during the season he’ll end up shedding a few lbs. I’m not sure what weight they want him playing at but he’ll probably hover in the 280-285ish range.
not 10lbs that fast. He's pretty close to playing weight for this year, but he's also not terrible at 280 for a 3tech.
Giddy-up!
yeah its important to keep in mind that Dawkins
was WAY undersized last year and still had an impact. His weight is much more sufficient this year. My point was that although he’s bigger now, he’s still on the small side for the position. Especially compared to how big FSU plans to be there in coming years.
Much more than just the Florida game
Greg would miss assignments at key points in game. One that comes to mind is a 3rd and long against NC State when he was in the nickle. Guy caught the ball wide open over the middle for a first down. NC State would eventually score. There are just some mental and visual cues that he missed as a freshman that really left him exposed. He wasn’t absolutely awful on defense, but definitely could have been better.
I think w/ improved coaching and another year under his belt.....
He’ll slowly begin to live up to the hype.
......and let the paramedics sort 'em out!
He played poorly in many other games.

Awkward phrasing?
Should it be written as either positives and negatives or strengths and weaknesses? I’m never one to mention it but it sticks out.
Trying not to go overboard here.
But I remember soemthing about Deion’s first year. I remember him being trucked by Bo Jackson. He was a QB coming out of HS with 4.4 speed. He wasn’t as elusive and fast, nor a big playmaker, that Reid was his freshman year. Deion never did learn to hit and tackle as hard as Reid does right now.
Of course, Deion’s improvement curve was steep, and few advanced over their careers as he did. That was due in large part to his extraordinary work ethic. But it will be interesting to see what G5 can become as he matures.
Apparently, Ann was wrong. :)
In their freshmen years, yes, absolutely.
Deion’s work on the track reduced his speed from 4.4+ range down to an unbelievable 4.21 by his senior year.
Bring back Peter Tom- a true Nole!

what do you think he runs?
I’d say 4.5 maybe. i remember at HS he needed to cut back a lot instead of just blowing by guys

From what I've seen he lacks that final gear
Hence the numerous times he was in the open field and didn’t just leave people in the dust.
Dude is still amazing and I love the field position he provides.
Shot a Gator in Jean Shorts just to watch him die.
Agreed. He has short area quickness but is not one of our 5 fastest guys IMO

I think there was one play, though, where D2 came flying from the side while BJ was running down the sideline.
D2 wasn’t the best tackler, but I think he got a good lick in on Bo-knows. Then again, that was so long ago I may be mistaken…
DUNNO about neon's db. skills early............
but BRANDED into my mind are the comments from my brother(a lifelong gaytor, now deceased). He and his wife sat in one gainseville endzone when they whipped us (53-14) was it? Anyway, it was Dions first year I believe, and Ben( brother) always said returning punts or k/o’
s he’d never in his life seen such quickness in any college athlete. note- brother hardly EVER had any good words for us noles.
A really special player

I wonder if any freshmen played well on defense last year.

Minor edit to piece
We have Mark Stoops, not Mike.
(not trying to be nitpicky, just an FYI to be heads up for in future articles). Truthfully, I had to go look to make sure I was right in that we have mark and not mike.
