CLOSED 2011 Recruiting Discussion Thread #1

Welcome to the recruiting discussion thread.  Please refer to the Recruiting Board for information on prospects.  We are asking readers comment here instead of the recruiting board so that the recruiting board will load quicker.  Feel free to talk reqcruiting news, rumor, information, etc.  Amateurs and experts are all welcome.  No question is too simple.  Have a projected class?  That's fine as well.

Once this thread fills up, we will start a new one.

Since this is a talk on 2011 prospects, for talk on Demar Dorsey, please post here. If you feel as though you won't get your answer there, you can also post it in the Ongoing Discussion Thread fanpost. Same goes for Jarvis Jones. Appreciate it. Also, please don't fish for information from subscription websites.

Notes:

  • Eric Beverly's profile has been updated in the Recruiting Big Board. Eric will need ACL surgery. 06.10.10.
  • 2012 K Marshall Morgan is on campus. 06.11.10.
  • Jimbo Fisher camp this weekend. 06.16.10.
  • Rashad Green commits to Florida State. 06.17.10.

FAQ:

1. Are the five-star Texas RB considering us?
No. I wish they were, but they just aren't. I know we're in their top four both, but don't buy the hype. Malcom Brown will most likely go to Texas, and Aaron Green will join his cousin at Nebraska. New article suggests that both still have FSU in their top four. Link in comments by Randy Spetman (poster).
2. Where do we stand with Ray Drew?
Georgia is definitely in the lead. We're fighting with Clemson, Auburn and Tennessee at this point for second. Don't want to speculate until he's been back to FSU's campus.
3. Who will be at the Jimbo Fisher camp this weekend?
Bud Elliot has a post in the comment section on some of the prospects that are expected.

Are we selling our Track&Field program to Crowell at all?

Or is he only concerned with football when he gets to college?

Great idea, DA. Having the discussion topics pinned on the right of the page is super convenient.

So….recruiting, huh?

Anyone got any thoughts about Bellamy committing to Clemson?

they should have a great backfield

since they also have Lane signed. Lane however is coming back from an ACL tear so whether or not he returns to form remains to be seen. Bellamy is a stud though and one of the best if not the best rb in Florida. Rb is not a position of need for us right now though and I epxect both lines to be our primary focus this cycle.

Committed.

Not signed. I’m sure that’s what you meant but just in case others think you mean he’s arriving on campus this summer.

I am MORE than happy with Beverly. Kid is a complete back. If he ran a 4.40/40, he’d be an elite back. But you don’t need elite speed to be a great back, imo. And as you said, I’d much rather load up on the lines at positions of need than add a 2nd rb, where it may be a feel good/ego boosting type commitment, but it isn’t an important commitment for the future/betterment of the program.

Does GT actually have a legitimate shot at Wilder?

Listening to some of their fans, it sounds like they’ve got him penciled into their class. That’d be a shot in the nuts to any of the big schools IMO.

Absolutely

I was just saying, players that go to Tech to play that position might have trouble for a bit getting the credibility they deserve. I don’t know. I still think he ultimately plays LB at UF.

I don't think it's because he played rb at GT that he wasn't thought of highly by scouts.

He just lacked the tools teams were looking for. If you put Adrian Peterson in that offense, he’d still get drafted highly.

My thoughts are that he never considered FSU.

Was always a Cane. Wanted a little attention talking up the SEC, then gave up for the good of the Canes. He’s a decent QB. I think he’d be a better WR, but I think the hype he will bring will be good for Randy Shannon’s job. Everyone around Miami thinks he’s the savior.

With Bellamy's commit...

…does that affect our stance with Lane at all (eventhough I know RB is low priority)?

by vegasnole on Jun 7, 2010 1:06 PM EDT reply actions

I don't think we're interested in another T. Pressely (tremendous talent/ recovering from injury)

But that’s just my opinion. I like the current RB commit as he fits the scheme perfectly and is just a tiny bit underated. I say take Crowell or walk away this year.

Giddy-up!

by truecolors on Jun 7, 2010 1:13 PM EDT up reply actions

I'd take Wilder even if he only wants to play center

Then you either show him he can’t and move him to LB or you end up with a pretty good RB on your team. Sounds like a win-win to me.

If things really turn out bad then he can always transfer, but he’s too good of a football player not to take on his terms.

There was a discussion about the DBs on the recruiting board (bottom)

and this comment is re: Hunter moving to LB

I just don’t see Hunter having the frame to add enough weight to be effective as a LB.

Hunter is also the most fluid of our current DB commits and seems the best suited to play CB when we use man-to-man principles IMO.

Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe Hunter also has the most PT at CB in HS out of the 5 current commits.

Hunter is as underrated as Bellamy is overrated...

by NaGaNole on Jun 7, 2010 6:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Hunter is a DB, most likely CB

Rishi, you’re right, he is very fluid. I spoke to Reid and Demps at Fan Day last year, and both played him up big time, saying he was a lock to FSU, huge fan growing up, and Reid said Hunter was better than him (Reid) at CB, more fluid and more technical at knowing the position.

He will not play LB.

by fsugrad06 on Jun 7, 2010 7:20 PM EDT up reply actions

I locked the recruiting big board.

Now all discussion will go on here. Some questions (and a statement) from the recruiting big board:
1. Who are the major 2012 QBs?
ganhki: Gunner Kiel, Gary Crow, Connor Brewer
2. What about Buck Allen!!? Is FSU gonna lose him when he’s right in their backyard??
osceolafan850: Most teams are holding off on Buck because of the injury.
Bud Elliot: Allen broke his leg. He didn’t fit what we do and isn’t good enough to make us change the offense for him. FSU wants to take an elite back if it takes a 2nd kid. Allen doesn’t fit that.
3. My biggest question with JWJ is does he fit our offense?
SWFLNole: I mirror your exact sentiments on Wilder, evaluation wise. However, I can’t help but think there is a good chance he ends up at OLB. Which is just fine.
4. What do we value more: Getting Wilder as a back or to keep him away from UF in case he decides to play OLB after all?
SWFLNole: getting Wilder on roster and keeping him away from UF.
Bud Elliot: I think you let him prove he can’t play it
5. oline0175: Nick is a great compliment to Will Tye, Tye is a guy you can put all over place and create mismatches. Put O’Leary in the middle of the field and you have two guys that you are forced to account for with multiple personnel. The Dallas Clark comparsion is perfect. He also seems to be a much more willing blocker. Some smooth hands at the TE position are exactly what a QB needs in stressful situations, we don’t have the comfort zone right now and Nick O’Leary is that type of player.

More discussion:

1. oline0175: Marshall could be the best QB on our roster with a year under Jimbo. There’s some on here that talk about this "flick" but I won’t even go in to it. He’s a simple tweak of the elbow away from having a great release and driving the ball more.

The basketball thing means absolutely nothing as he’s got EJ\Trickett ahead of him so at best he’s on the bench for 2 years and playing his RS Soph year. Plenty of time to play bball and football.

Yes I am Marshall’s biggest fan and yes I coach quarterbacks for a living.

2. What type of QB works best in our system?
evenflow58: The better OCs will fit their scheme to their players. Ideally I believe Jimbo would like a good pocket passer with at least mediocre mobility but you can scheme around most deficiencies and it looks like Jimbo does. Having said that there will be some throws that a QB will have to make like a small window on a flag route and a screen pass but these are throws most QBs can and do make the outs are the tough throws but that’s not as big of a deal at the college level.

3. mmmCheese: While it’s plain to see Stephen definitely has Phillip’s throwing motion, it’s his older brother’s mental game that I would hope Stephen has if we take him. What impressed me most about Rivers in college was his incredible pocket presence. He was always, always looking for an open receiver. I watched him evade more sacks by finding an open receiver at the last possible second than he could have if he’d started scrambling at the first sign of pressure. I used to tell friends from school that if we could have put Rivers’ head onto Chris Rix’s body, we would have one more Heisman in the trophy case.
If Stephen Rivers has that same talent, that same head for the position, I hope it’s something our coaches can identify through evaluations since in his high school video all twenty-five pass plays I saw the from the snap came out of the shotgun. I didn’t see a single snap from under center at all.

4. PadriacTheSeminole: (Ray) Drew Due to his religious nature, I feel we will be fighting an uphill battle against Mark Richt.
CelticPride: I understand, but "Florida State is the only school (distance wise), however, that would allow Drew to continue to participate in his church during college." I think that’s a huge factor for someone heavily involved in their church.

5. derekkg: Rashad Greene is a beast. I would take him over story even though Story is a great athlete. Greene smaller but he is more well rounded. As far as the size Story does get a point there but Rashad can get up a little just look at his box jump. Either/both are fine with me.

I think dropping an important touchdown pass on a nationally televised game would cause many a high schooler to get emotional. If anything it shows he cares about the game.

I agree that having emotion is a good thing. But IMO you should be able to control tears by this point in his life.

All I’m saying is it seems like the kid has some growing up to do. Never met him personally and I have nothing against him but it seems like he is immature. He is a very good athlete with great speed but looks very raw to me and it doesn’t look like he is asked to run all that many routes at Lakeland. I’m just not all that high on him maybe I’m being overly critical but I feel like a high school football player should be able to control his emotions a little better than that.

I lost a state championship and two state playoff games. One of the playoff games I played terribly.

Looking back maybe I am being a bit harsh but I just don’t think crying during a game should be looked at as acceptable. Plenty of guys on my teams were crying all three times (especially the championship game). Just something about crying mid game doesn’t sit right with me. I feel like kids this age should be able to control that a little better mid game. Idk I could be wrong but that’s how I feel.

Morrison was ending his career at this point and any dreams of a national title. If I saw McRoy crying after his team lost a semifinal game I would think nothing of it. That type of stuff happens. I wouldn’t even think it was weird if Peyton Manning cried after the Super Bowl. After something like that I have no problem with it. But I would prefer a guy who can drop a pass like that and put it behind them as opposed to someone who gets that shook up about dropping a pass. It is great to care but there’s a limit IMO

This play happened somewhat early in the game if I remember correctly. They showed him on the sideline a possession or two later and he was still in hysterics.

I’m not looking for a fight here I’m just saying IMO that kind of stuff shouldn’t happen during a game especially when you are a stud football player and the top play maker for your team

McCoy obviously with the best set of dippers. Haggins though made the big plays on 3rd and 4th to extend drives and threw a couple immaculate long balls.

I'm not trying to take anything away from his athletic ability.

Like I said in a post earlier he has very good speed and is crazy athletic. He probably is a bit raw as a receiver because it doesn’t seem like he is asked to run a lot of routes

Apparently there are 3 regions in the county and you can choose within those. Cape Coral and Fort Myers are in separate regions. So Jaylen and Sammy must not live together. CCHS and SFMHS are about 25 miles closer to each other than Thomasville and Tallahassee.

by nolefansam on Jun 14, 2010 9:21 AM EDT up reply actions

I'm about 45 minutes east of Scranton just off of 84 and maybe 30 minutes before you get to Jersey.

I’m not sure what there is to do. Nature stuff. Ton of state parks and waterfalls and all that in the area. Hunting, fishing or kayaking if you’re into that. The Delaware Water Gap or whatever is close to me (Jersey/PA border). If you gamble there are a few casinos. I’ve also gone to Atlantic City (3.5ish hours from me) and I’ll be heading to NYC at some point (2-2.5 hours). There was the Pocono 500 a few weeks ago. NASCAR will be back in a month or two I think. I looked at tickets and they were only like 50 bucks. Might be something I’ll go to since I’ve never been to a race.

But if you’re looking for stuff to do a couple nights a week after work, you’re probably out of luck. It’s like 45 minutes to the nearest movie theater from west Milford.

Luke Stampini seems to think so.

3A All-State means he’s at least one of the six best kickers in the state. He’s’ pretty good from what I’ve heard. Heard he really likes UF and FSU. I forgot his third school, but the in-state schools are in the lead… for a 2012 prospect…

Right, few years down the road.

Wouldn’t 3A All State just mean the top 3A kicker, not necessarily one of the top 6 in the state? Like the 2nd best kicker in the state could also play in 3A and lose that recognition to Morgan, for example.

Didn’t go to high school in Florida but there are 7 classifications right?

If he is as good as any of our last 3 kickers/punters, I’d gladly take him.

This is what I think we get as of now, conservatively.

QB 3* Top 40 QB
Beverly 3* Top 30 RB
Greene 4* Top 20 WR
Oleary 5* Top 3 TE
Hart 4* Top 10 OL
Joe 3* Top 30 OL
Matulis 3* Top 50 OL
Pettis 3* Top 45 OL
Lovelady 3* Top 45 OL
Rabasa 4* Top 10 DE
Williams 3* Top 70 DE
Mitchell 4* Top 20 DT
Stample 4* Top 15 DT
Bell 4* Top 15 DT
Akins 3* Top 30 DT
Steward 5* #1 LB
Smith 3* Top 25 LB
Williams 5* Top 5 DB
Davis 4* Top 15 DB
Smith 4* Top 15 DB
Hunter 4* Top 15 DB
Brutus 4* Top 20 DB
1 more DB (Grooms or Pryor, not Waisome) 4* Top 20 DB

That’s a really good class, and crazy to think we get that taking 5 OL

3.7 AVG star rating would be our highest in a half decade, and higher in even longer than that if we consider the enrolled rankings.

Moses McCray Sr.
Anthony McCloud Jr.
Jacobbi McDaniel Jr.
Everett Dawkins Jr.
Demonte McAllister So.
Darious Cummings So.
Damien Jacobs So.
Cameron Erving Fr.
Brandon Jenkins Jr.
Toshmon Stevens Jr.

+ 5 or 6 incoming recruits.

I’m pretty giddy in saying we’ll once again be very good at DL

by Bud Elliott on Jun 12, 2010 12:53 AM EDT up reply actions

It's much better to be conservative with projections

That would be an impressive haul of front seven personnel (We have a surplus of DB’s so I know why we wouldn’t have much of an interest in Dorsey or TJ). And plenty of posters on-line that I respect believe Bell is superior to Gosha. Akins would be the most interesting prospect. Seems like a ‘Bama’ 1 Tech type. We will have a serious D-line rotation

Gotta remember none of the kids we are recruiting will do a damn thing for us on the DL in 2011 and most won’t do shit in 2012. UF just took the most impressive DL haul in memory and nobody projects those kids to do shit until 2012.

But here’s a look at 2011

Moses McCray Sr.
Anthony McCloud Jr.
Jacobbi McDaniel Jr.
Everett Dawkins Jr.
Demonte McAllister So.
Darious Cummings So.
Damien Jacobs So.
Cameron Erving Fr.
Brandon Jenkins Jr.
Toshmon Stevens Jr.
Dan Hicks So.
Bjoern Werner So.

That’s 12.

If we go

Rabasa
Williams
Bell
Mitchell
Lawrence-Stample
Akins

our roster would look something like this

DT
Moses McCray Sr.
Anthony McCloud Jr.
Jacobbi McDaniel Jr.
Demonte McAllister So.
Damien Jacobs So.
Cameron Erving Fr.
Bell
Lawrence Stample
Mitchell
Akins

DT/ SDE
Everett Dawkins Jr.
Darious Cummings So.
Dan Hicks So.
Bjoern Werner So.

WDE
Brandon Jenkins Jr.
Toshmon Stevens Jr.
Rabasa
Williams

We will take the 5-6 best DL we can get and then find positions.

We will be bigger, much much bigger, without super DE speed rushers (though you gotta like jenkins), and zone blitz a lot with elite level pass rushing backers and big bodies dropping into coverage.

Basically, we’ll be Iowa’s defense, but faster. I think everyone prefers this to being run over like we have been in recent years.

And even if you DON’T prefer this, you’re dreaming if you think anyone we recruit this cycle is coming in and making an impact in his first year. So the 2011 block is pretty much locked in.

by Bud Elliott on Jun 12, 2010 1:07 AM EDT up reply actions

but I think his heart is with Clemson. Also, I am sure Clemson coaches are talking to him about Spiller’s situation- he had his own little family in FL but stuck through it and became a legend up there. Lane’s in his ear daily, and I think eventually he’ll switch back.

Don’t get me wrong though, I want to see him at FSU. He’s going to be a special player and is one of our most talented commits. I hope we can hold on to him but if we do I will honestly be surprised.

I know how big he is but with that type of athleticism he could be a monster of a SDE. It would be nice to have that sort of athleticism on the inside pushing the pocket but a 6’1 ish 300 lb SDE IMO would be very difficult for a lot of people to handle. If he turns out to be an NFL prospect I’d be willing to bet he would project as a 5-tech for a team running 30.

But while we’re at it, where does Mitchell play? 2 Tech or something like that? Seems like he would be pretty interchangable with Erving and Cummings. He also may be able to go strong side in a pinch, if needed

I think Bell has the length to play outside.

That Nile doesn’t have.

But neither will. We already have our SDEs in Hicks, Cummings, Werner.

No

Let less athletic players (Guards and centers even) deal with his lateral quickness

Apparently Williams is close to committing.

He's been close, evidently.

One pretty reputable recruiting source is very surprised he hasn’t done it already.

Fine by me

If we think he’ll put on some weight, I’m cool. Kid is quick

Williams?? Karlos already committed, so who is this other Williams?

Speed is a great asset; but it's greater when it's combined with quickness - and there's a big difference.

UGA has been cleaning up. Their car delearship is better than FSUs apparently.

Almost no one seemed to think FSU had a chance.

They were all shocked we were even mentioned. And UF fans are saying O’Leary isn’t near as good as Christian from last year and that’s why he’s not considering them. He doesn’t want to sit behind him again. Right.

Clemson lost Brandon Ellerbee to UNC today. Probably means they will intensify their pursuit of Cortez Davis.

With Miami making a hard push with Joe, my confidence is waning

Both schools equal with offer and heavy pursuit, I think Miami has the edge unfortunately

We were all created to be Seminoles. This is why we bleed garnet and piss gold.

What are the chances that we’ve have 2 Keelin Smiths committed? ;)

I wouldn't mind a class finished off with just guys from that list.

I would prefer a Drew or Newberry as well as one or two of those de’s, but other than that it’s good. Not sure it’d help separate us from Clemson/Miami though.
