Just could not pass up the opportunity to write a sponsored post, not only involving beer and the Blue Light Refreshment Duo, as then I thought that this might not be a bad topic of discussion. If you didn't know, Labatt Blue and Labatt Blue Light are not only an excellent duo together, but individually they form a Standout Duo with pretty much anything else*
So, who would I select for my choice of FSU's Standout Duo? There were many potential choices here. But in my mind, there was only one. "Meet me there or beat me there." The phrase espoused by FSU's book ends in 1996 meant exactly as it read. Get to the quarterback. And that's what Reinard Wilson and Peter Boulware did.
In an era before sophisticated passing offenses were seen throughout college football, the 6'1" 255 lb Wilson and 6'5" 250 lb Boulware raced around and through helpless opposing offensive tackles on the way to the quarterback. But the battle was often not as much against the opposing offensive tackle as it was against each other to see who could get their first. Wilson was the full-bodied pass rusher. Stout and strong he bull-rushed his way to the quarterback. And while still refreshing, Boulware was the light of this bunch, with speed as his primary weapon.
Their results were astounding. The Standout Duo accounted for 34 sacks (or more than Florida State's defensive ends have amassed in the last three seasons), including a 6 sack performance in their masterstroke against a Gator team that everyone could see was the best in the country. Florida State has an undefeated season. The Standout Duo made sure UF did not.
Florida State had great pass rushers before Boulware and Wilson, and it had great pass rushers after, but I don't think it ever had a pass rushing Standout Duo like those two.
* Not driving.
So how 'bout you? What is your favorite FSU Standout Duo? Why?
