Clemson Needs A New QB (probably)
MLB teams do not throw 1st round picks at college football players, as the Colorado Rockies did last night, unless they are sure they will sign. Clemson insiders say Parker's dad was already very close to a deal with the Rockies before the draft. It would be a shock if he played another snap of football for Clemson.
The backup for Clemson is Tajh Boyd, and those who watched him this Spring say he is not ready to be an ACC starter, saying losing Parker drops Clemson from a 9-3/8-4/7-5 team to a 7-5/6-6/5-7 type team.

This is my area of expertise
Colorado had Parker pinned as their choice for a while. People inside the organization confirmed with me that Parker said he would sign if chosen early.
People are saying he almost signed before the draft
which I think is a good move. He gets more money from MLB than the NFL. Dabo was talking out the side of his neck on Parker coming back. Only down side to this is that Clemson will probably get rolled by Auburn and people will use it as an indictment of ACC football.

I know this is probably what you meant, but
he could possibly have negotiated a deal if he were to be drafted, but he could not have signed anything. Again, I realize this is probably what you meant.
Regardless, Clempsun fans might as well put a fork in him.

I moved it from 52.5 up to 57.5 in my projections yesterday
Maybe slightly pessimistic, but they’re still an infrastructurally good football team.
>>---l>
question for ya
I’m still trying to formulate my expectations based on my perceived point spread for the given games, meaning that I try to assign my percentages from how much I think the spread should be. Using that model, your change (52.5 to 57.5) would only move the spread for the FSU/CU game from ~1.5 to about ~2.5
In my mind, losing Parker costs them ~ touchdown against us, without changing how many we’ll score against them.
I guess my question is… Do you start with the spread and go back, or do you just assign a percentage?
I usually start with a percentage and then look at the line to see if it's reasonable
I’ll probably end up going as high as 62.5 for that game because I think we’ll be > 3pt favorites.
>>---l>
Better, but now I like our base defense much better against them
Cover 3 zone, especially from a young/inexperienced secondary, means lots of soft spots. Good QBs can find these. Now, I presume Clemson will depend heavily on running the ball, and Cover 3 means we get a SS in the box a bit more.
TN: Our speculation is better than most pundits' analysis
Is this further proof that you shouldn’t recruit someone with a very high ceiling in another sport to play the most important position on the field? I mean, he played all of 1 year of football.
I think it means you better have a damn good backup

This is a truth in today's game across the board
TN: Our speculation is better than most pundits' analysis
Seriously?
So Washington shouldn’t have recruited Jake Locker? Stanford shouldn’t have recruit John Elway? Hell FSU shouldn’t have had Charlie Ward?
You take risks, if a kid can play a kid can play. If he leaves to pursue another interest you wish him well and hope your coach has adequate reserves.
Not recruiting a kid because he’s good at something else is just allowing yourself to miss on kids. Horrible philosophy, especially because it happens so rarely. I’m with RaysnNoles, just hope you’re got some depth.

legit question
don’t let that dude bother you.
I think he was thinking you were making a point rather than asking a question, while you were simply only asking a question.
Wasn't Meant To Be Combative
I just can’t see how a school, any school, would let that ‘fear he might leave’ govern recruiting. I understand it is a question but in today’s world of college football and collegiate sports in general you sell what you have and sort it out down the line. Can it hurt you? Absolutely but, it can also be the biggest payoff you get.
The idea of passing on an Elite 11 QB because he’s also good at baseball creates negative recruiting openings that no program wants. If your school gets tagged as “unkind” to dual sport athletes it gets used against you and, personally, I think you miss out on kids.
So, wasn’t trying to be argumentative but, that philosophy is dangerous. Not recruiting those kids isn’t the answer. Recruiting with departure in mind is a better approach. Dennis Dixon at UO and Pat White at WVU are 2 examples of the anti-Kyle Parker. Kids with tremendous baseball ceilings that stuck with football to become arguably the best qb in their school’s history. Granted White made his mind up early and the reported racism of the WVU baseball coach helped. Dixon played in the Braves organization in the summers before returning to UO for football.
I’ll admit it can burn you, as a Tar Heel, seeing us lose Donovan Tate last season hurt but we never would have inked him in the 1st place if we didn’t give him the chance to play baseball and football. Its worked out in the past though with a guy like Ronald Curry who legitimately didn’t know which sport he wanted to play.
Apologies for coming off crass, just a situation that can definitely backfire.

Elway and Ward played in an entirely different atmosphere.
Locker’s situation is an interesting one and in a lot of ways Washington got pretty lucky.
I think there is a lot of merit to questioning recruiting a guy who wants to play qual sports at QB in today’s college football, i.e. Nick Marshall.

The Rox are pretty excited about his power.
He will probably be groomed to be Helton’s replacement at 1st someday. It’s all about his bat.
Unfortunately this isn't your Coors Field circa 2000

Oh, I know
But, from everything Ive read, there arent many that were big on his defensive abilities. The main thing he had going for him was his bat.
I don't think Parker will be able to give a damn about FB
now that he’s getting a $1.5 mil signing bonus.
Accountabilty is back in Tallahassee....
Where did you read that? I would have expected a bit more

Shakin The Southland just got very nervous
This really hurts the Clemson team and in my opinion Parker is gone. Boyd is nowhere near ready and he will need all the snaps he can get come Fall. Recruiting a qb also has to become a primary focus and I expect them to take 2 qb’s minimum this cycle. They have to be very nervous that Wade is essentially their backup qb and if Boyd goes down then Clemson is done for the year.

crazy Fiestanole
now puts this game at an 80% win. I thought we would win handlily anyway, given that (a) it will be a grudge game, (2) we won’t be coming in with half a team and half a staff for once, and (D) Clem&Son still has Brad Scott and Dabo Swinny clowning the sidelines.
Apparently, Ann was wrong. :)
Wrong question.
If I were a Clemson fan, I’d be wondering what he’s ever done to show coaching excellence or brilliance in any aspect.
And I know this part is subjective, but when I’ve seen him on tape he just does not come across to me as very bright. He strikes me as a good ole boy- Bowdeneque hire, a yeoman coach who acted young enough to win a popularity contest with the players. He’s just a continuation of the Tommy Bowden regime and is hanging on for the ride of his professional life before the inevitable crash.
Again, jmho based on subjective life experience. Your milieage may vary.

He won the division in his first year, correct?
He appears to be doing very well in recruiting, correct?

I'm w/ you SWFL
Outside of his name being Dabo, I think he’s doing fine thus far.
However, 2010 may be rough.

That’s awesome!
Tommy did pretty well with recruiting too, btw.

And, he won the ACC Atlantic with Tommy's players, not that he's done a bad job since.
I could be wrong, but I would put him in the same tier as Shannon, except with more resources. Only time will tell.
>-----:----:------>Spearing 'em and Scalping 'em like it's 1999
I'm not so sure this Jimbo fella is the right man for the job.
Only one full season at Clemson and got the Atlantic division title
I don’t see where he has shown his inability to coach.
"FEAR is just the Opening ACT!!!" Coach Coley
He won the Atlantic with FSU having one of the worst defenses in the country and BC having one of the worst offenses.
You had better win your division when your two biggest rivals are that bad.
Tommy Boy was 72-45 (.615) at Clemson; Dabo is 13-8 (.619) thus far
Bowden went 9-2 in his 2nd season (2000) and would have won the ACC but for FSU going 11-0 and playing for the NC game. That season the Tigers played Michael Vick’s VT Hokies in the 2001 Gator Bowl. Arguably, Bowden had much less talent in the cupboard than he left Dabo. His predecessor, Tommy West, was 31-28 and went 3-8 in 1998 – good for last in the ACC.
As far as I can tell, Swinney has never even been a coordinator at any coaching level. Last time I checked, you earned the right to coach at a D-I school. Since when do you prove your inability to coach?
However, I will say that I prefer Swinney at Clemson b/c if the Tigers go out and get a real coach, the Noles could be in trouble…
i know nothing about college baseball so
does a college player have to declare for the draft or can they can get picked by a mlb team any of their 4/5 years in college?
Here you go
High School — Generally, only those high school students in the United States or Canada who have exhausted their eligibility to participate in high school athletics are eligible for selection.
College — Generally, a student at a four-year college is eligible after completion of their junior year or if the student is at least 21 years old.
Junior College — All junior college students are eligible for selection.
Wants to live in a world where Batting Average goes the way of the Dodo!
To add to what Rays said a player never has to declare for the baseball draft and simply can be selected once they become eligible.
They only become ineligible for college baseball once they sign a pro contract (or run out of eligibility).
Since this is a topic on ACC QB being drafted
NCST QB Russell Wilson was just drafted in the 4th round by the Rockies.

Wouldn't that almost justify Parker's draft position since he was the more highly thought of prospect?

Wilson is really really raw but has potential
Shocked he went that high really

Glennon will be the better QB prospect
He’s very underrated in my opinion.
Russell Wilson is very overrated as a baseball player too. I agree with Ray

Any chance Russell Wilson leaves NC State and signs?
Klaw (1:49 PM)
I asked two area scouts last month how good Wilson was and I was told, “I don’t know – he never plays” by both of them.

Wilson says he will play baseball
and then return to NC State and play football in the fall. Don’t know how his new employer will fell about that if football has been slowing his development.

Dennis Dixon from Oregon did that before his senior year. He struggled mightly in rookie ball due to not playing baseball in college (Oregon did not have a baseball team at the time). He then went on to have a Heisman type season before blowing his knee out and know plays for the Steelers.

What's the chances of Clemson landing LeMay now?
I’d guess whichever school has the worst 1st year starting QB (UGA – Murray, Clemson – Boyd) is where LeMay will land.
The reason we fell off for LeMay was Boyd
not Parker. I don’t see us in it with him any further, but they’ll continue to recruit him.
