Around SBN: Lakers Should Trade Andrew Bynum So He Doesn't Go To Waste

Per his twitter, he told a team that called him in the 4th round of the MLB draft that he would not sign for their proposed offer. Easterling is a very good college receiver and extremely dependable, but everyone acknowledges that his future is on the diamond (unless he gets taller or a lot faster). Easterling still has two years to play baseball, so his ability to earn a living on the diamond is not foreclosed.

In any case, this means he'll continue to get more education. And for the vast majority of athletes (even those good enough to play at FSU), the future lies in education, not athletics.

Great news for the WR corps

Easterling is the best kind of depth that group needs right now

And he's a great blocker.

I was hoping he came back for at least one more year, and it looks like it’ll happen. He’s one of my favorite players on the team.

I agree

reminds me of Lonnie Pryor, in that he puts everything he has into every play.

God I love that.

ditto

I think he's our best all-around receiver right now.

Maybe not the most talented physically or the fastest, but he seems to do everything well.

by FSUjab on Jun 9, 2010 9:41 AM EDT up reply actions

He's been away from the football field and will be rusty on his routes when he gets back

But I love the kid.

I also like him and think he is a needed and welcomed addition and Jimbo said he will be joining off-season activities as soon as the baseball season is over.

I think that should give him enough time to improve his route running, especially if he starts right away in the 7-on-7’s with CP7.

>-----:----:------>Spearing 'em and Scalping 'em like it's 1999
I'm not so sure this Jimbo fella is the right man for the job.

I'm still surprised he healed from that so quickly.

Personally

I was really looking forward to seeing Easterling next year. He has been very dependable catching the ball and I distinctly remember that TD catch against Virginia Tech that blew my mind. See it at the 1:45 mark here.

Of course, I could just be in love with his good hands, instincts and the fast-twitch muscles of which I associate the prototypical FSU receiver.

by freshcollegeboy on Jun 9, 2010 1:44 AM EDT reply actions

yeah one of my favorite highlights of his

iirc his family was there too touching story

by StM on Jun 9, 2010 2:32 AM EDT up reply actions

He was in a unique situation,

being a redshirt sophomore that he can come back and still have leverage to sign a contract come next year’s draft. Most people get drafted as juniors and are forced to decide between taking the money or going back to school for one more year. Taiwan can have the same leverage next year too.

by fscubsu9 on Jun 9, 2010 1:49 AM EDT reply actions

Nice

Easterling is just a stud… I love to watch him play because he’s a play maker. This is huge for the receiving corps

by FSUNole51 on Jun 9, 2010 2:43 AM EDT reply actions

Great News!

Glad he’ll be back, I’ve always liked his demeanor on the field.

by KnoxNole on Jun 9, 2010 8:14 AM EDT reply actions

Win-win for everyone

Taiwan needs more time to get his offer from MLB and in the meantime he can play WR for us.

I think before his injury – Taiwan was shaping up to be a go-to guy for Ponder on 3rd down in 2008. Not just the VT catch but several others.

I think getting Taiwan back for the fall is a huge shot in the arm with Goodman and Owens gone. There’s something to be said for experience at the WR position and as excited as I am by Smith and Haulstead – until I see them consistently making catches in live game action – it’s nice knowing that Taiwan is coming back.

Having Taiwan, Fortson, and Bert Reed on the field at the same time – is a nice lineup of WRs for us.

by GraniteStateNoles on Jun 9, 2010 8:57 AM EDT reply actions

Haulstead and R. Smith will be big contributors too – I personally think R. Smith will have better numbers than Taiwan this year

by 93noleman on Jun 9, 2010 9:36 AM EDT up reply actions

I'm also on the Smith train

Big, big receiver. Was very raw coming out of a run-heavy high school offense.

by ricobert1 on Jun 9, 2010 10:10 AM EDT up reply actions

Christian Ponder is probably happy

Bert Reed, Taiwan Easterling and Jarmon Fortson sounds solid to me. beyond those 3 are unproven imo. Haulstead and smith didnt impress much in the little bit of game time they had last year. Hopefully one of the freshmen like greg dent, kenny shaw, Christian Green or DJJ can contribute.

by fsudude on Jun 9, 2010 9:55 AM EDT reply actions

I'd say Ponder is very happy with those 3 starting

All three complement each other very well and bring something different to the field. Not to mention the experience that already have playing together.

This allows Haulstead, Smith and the true freshmen WR to come along at a more gradual pace.

by FtLauderdaleNole on Jun 9, 2010 10:21 AM EDT up reply actions

I believe you are under-estimating Smith and Haulstead quite a bit fsudude

Especially given your small-sample size while they were True Freshman.

I agree that they are unproven.

They don’t have much real game experience. To count on them probably wouldn’t be wise, but I do hope they at least make solid contributions this season.

You didn't like what they did on kick coverage?

Outside of that they didn’t get many reps

I think when they are out on the field most downs it will be a different story

by 93noleman on Jun 9, 2010 1:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Why do the players that get drafted based on their "potential", never get to play (D'vo, Easterling)?

Are our college coaches not capable of unlocking that potential? Are they in MM doghouse for playing football?

It just seems to me that if someone has that much potential, and gets drafted higher than most of the starters on the team, then you try and find a way to get that guy some playing time so he can work it out?

I think this philosophy really only works in college baseball.

by jasonole59 on Jun 9, 2010 10:17 AM EDT reply actions

Why spend time trying to teach somebody to play when you can plug in a player and get immediate results?

College baseball coaches aren’t paid to unlock potential and get players to the league. They are paid to win baseball games.

by MattDNole on Jun 9, 2010 10:18 AM EDT up reply actions

Understood. I was just thinking that if they were given the chance to play, then they probably could help win games. I mean if Tapley… I digress.

good news for team!

Think another point to bring up is; Easterling will bring veteran leadership to the WR corps. Show those young bucks how to prepare, practice, perform and participate in being an all-around student athlete.

by delfi on Jun 9, 2010 12:46 PM EDT reply actions

from the film I watched the past 2 seasons, I'm not a bullish on Taiwan's blocking performances.

I just don’t think he has the upside of others I’ve seen (or he hasn’t unlocked his potential yet). I’m basing this opinion on hundreds of plays.
With that in mind…..he’s pound for pound the most fearless receiver we’ve had in a long time. Taiwan doesn’t go down until he’s beaten into the ground, often by backers and DLine chasing the play downfield.
This is a great bit of news today. I’m hoping we can redshirt most of our 2010 class receivers and roll with Bert, Taiwan, J-Man, Rodney, and Willie. Most of the newcomers are too slight, like Bert in 2007.

Strong hands.

like you said, refuses to go down, great balance, great routes. Going to be a great contributor this year.

Not just photos, plenty of video.

Not trying to rain on anyone's parade

But did he say anywhere that he was playing football next year? Only reason I ask is because I heard very recently that he told coaches that he would not be playing football next year, comes from a pretty reliable source

by Cody@TN on Jun 9, 2010 4:44 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

What will he be doing instead?

I assume that meant focusing solely on baseball.

Yes that's what I was saying

From what I heard, his plan was to either go in the draft (if the money was right, which I dont think it was) or come back and focus on baseball, since that is his future.

by Cody@TN on Jun 9, 2010 10:42 PM EDT reply actions

If he did this he would probably lose his scholly though.

I doubt baseball has the room to pick him up (at least not on a full scholarship). Can he afford to do this?

by nolesblogger on Jun 10, 2010 12:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Baseball could easily pick up 1/3 of his scholarship

There are other ways he could be subsidized for the remainer but don’t know if that would happen

by RaysnNoles on Jun 10, 2010 12:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah but can he afford to pay for 2/3 of his tuition and expenses?

Also would baseball be willing to pay for his scholarship (instead of a new recruits) considering he didn’t pay much this year?

I think he could definitely take out the loans and then pay for it once he signs after the next draft, but that could be risky (injury). I also think baseball would be willing to make room for him. But I think it would be much safer to stay on the football scholly for 1 more year.

by nolesblogger on Jun 10, 2010 5:35 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree he should stick with football

Players don’t always have the cover the remaining 2/3 on their own (the really good ones often don’t), there are other scholarships/endowments that they can be awarded to compensate.

This is good news

We would be fine with or without him but I think the best part is we still have an ace in the hole with him. Also now he can help mentor the younger guys and we dont have to just throw them to the wolfs right from the bat. Also Its good to see that he knows he will be worth more with another year or two of baseball under him. I hope the best for him and know he will be a help to the team this year as he has been for the last 2 years
