Around SBN: Upon Further Review: Bo Knows Longreads

Week 4 of Seminole Rising profiles sophomore RB Chris Thompson. Thompson is a great kid and admittedly one of my favorite skill players on the team. I expect to see him used and asked to do a lot more in the offense this season.

Good write up

Sure hope that 23 turns out to be a often used weapon this season.

Thank God for the men and women who stand tall in the night to protect this great country we love so much

Nice story

Chris Thompson is a beast. One of my fav players. I wouldn’t mind if he starts ahead of JT

looking forward to seeing what he can do this year

he needs to work on ball security, but otherwise a very promising future under Gran’s leadership

honestly just excited about depth

knowing that we can have extremely fresh legs throughout the whole game is a good feeling.

That play at 7:20 (49 yard scamper by Thompson)

is the “Pony” formation Jimbo has talked about before. Thomas was the lead block, and actually sprung Thompson for an additional 20 yards.

Cue Desman...

This team will improve in '10... on its 16-16 conference record over the last 4 years.... after losing 20 games in the last 4 years... after having the 7th worst major-conference defense... after not even winning its own division in the ACC in the last 4.

Not-so-veiled jab against other backs on our team?

I think its more a jab at a bunch of college athletes in general

But if I’m not mistaken the others do struggle a bit more than CT.

I actually enjoy the comment on Ponders run at 9:01

Thats an education in acceleration by Christian Ponder…

Team GOLD

Wow

And that was #92 Michael Johnson (3rd round pick) he beat to the edge, too.

With Ponder and the WRs you know there will be a passing offense

So if things are fairly balanced, so I am thinking despite having a real good ground game, FSU may still not get a new 1,000 yard rusher this year. Looking at last year, the ball was distributed to so many running backs, and though no one separated themselves by head and shoulders, even if Thomson does do so this year, I still think the coaches will utilize other guys a good bit just to keep him fresh and keep defenses disoriented.

One thing that makes Christian so dangerous is that he trusts everyone

If you’re open, you get the ball

I could see FSU averaging better than 200 yards rushing per game

and still not have a 1000 yard rusher.

Though I could see Thomas and Thompson both having over 1000 yards total offense, and Thomas, Thompson, Pryor, and Smiley each having at least one game over 100 yards rushing. It will be a matter of who gets the hot feet and how a back matches up against a given defense.

by Wild@Heart Nole on Jul 16, 2010 11:45 PM EDT up reply actions

I think FSU definitely could have a 1000 yard rusher

for two reasons.

Number 1: The first four games or so of last year (at least) we a complete failure. Only later into the season were we able to pick up the running game. I don’t see that happening again this year. JT was just 150 yards short after not doing much at all in the first few games.

Part B: We were playing catch up nearly the whole season! we couldnt stop the other team and we behind the majority of the games for long periods. I was only on Ponder’s arm were we able to come back in some of the games.

I think this year we get ahead and we play keep away. JT gets his 1k.

I meant, specifically, the rushing game was a complete failure

Not sure I would ever label a 190 lb RB "punishing"

But I like the veratility he brings to this stable of backs

by Cigar City Nole on Jul 16, 2010 11:03 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

Maybe not "punishing"

but he has gotten ALOT stronger and faster ALREADY. He’s just one of those rare guys that seems to want contact and creates it, puttin his head down and lowerin his shoulder on dudes. I think he’s gonna surprise a few folks in 2010.

by Chief03 on Jul 17, 2010 12:36 AM EDT reply actions

I say punishing because its a lot more tiresome and fatiguing than people realize

To tackle someone built the way he is. As I said, he’s built in a very compact way and packs a punch, lowers his shoulders when he finishes runs. Its not to say that 190lbs. itself is a huge number, but when you put it on a frame that’s only 5’8 inches tall and finishes his runs strong, it becomes a lot more of a problem than you may realize. Compare it to a bowling ball, Chris Thompson would not be fun to tackle and his strength/balance combination because of that low center of gravity is very deceptive.

by truenole87 on Jul 17, 2010 1:45 AM EDT up reply actions

Sorry, the thought just came to mind

But on a bit of a smaller scale its much like Maurice Jones-Drew. Jones-Drew is 5’7 and almost 210lbs. which obviously makes him even more dense than CT, but simply for comparison’s sake, because of that build he is extremely difficult to take down at times and in a lot of cases surprises defenders when he lowers his shoulders. There have been those that have thrown the 200 lb. mark as a realistic goal for Chris Thompson at some point in his career. You could also compare him to someone like Oregon State’s Jacquizz Rodger’s (5’7, 191 lbs.). These are backs that are typically assumed to be “scat backs” because they’re small in stature, but the compact build and running style is a component of their game that should not be underestimated or taken for granted.

by truenole87 on Jul 17, 2010 1:59 AM EDT up reply actions

CT combines that with speeed!

Quizz is slower than Thompson, I think
BTW, i think i’ma make a Chris Thompson highlight vid this year
