Monday Morning Tomahawks 07.19.10
The big question with Clemson is of course whether Kyle Parker will turn pro in baseball. Still, there are other very talented players on that team and Myerberg profiles them:
[Dabo's] players like him more, a factor that cannot be overestimated. He's had some good luck so far, however. He inherited a tough yet enviable position in 2008: the team was in shambles, but Swinney could only improve upon the always under-performing Tommy Bowden (emphasis ours). Thanks to a talented roster, last year's team was built to make a run for the A.C.C. championship. In 2010, we'll see what Swinney is made of. If he can lead the Tigers back to, say, nine wins, he deserves consideration for conference coach of the year.
What would have to occur in order for Clemson to duplicate last season's win total? The new faces at the offensive skill positions would have to come close to matching their predecessor's production, particularly at running back. That's not going to happen with an individual rusher, but instead with a by-committee approach. Clemson would have to first identify a starting quarterback - that's if Parker opts for baseball - then create a system best suited for the starter's skill set. To be fair, the offensive line is in good shape. The rest of the offense is not, to put it mildly. If Parker returns, the Tigers could have the offense to repeat as Atlantic division champs; the defense should be stout, even with its five lost starters. Clemson might have too many question marks to make a conference title run a distinct possibility. The Tigers are still a good team, one capable of winning eight games in the regular season. If they do, it will likely be due to the play of a potentially terrific defense.
Lots more at that link, and also the "5 & 5" here, NY Times.
-Dr Saturday wraps up his ACC week by predicting the two teams with the cakewalk ACC schedules to win the ACC divisions. That means Virginia Tech (avoids Clemson & FSU from the Atlantic) and Boston College (draws Virginia AND Duke from the Coastal). If I were to pick a team to win the Atlantic Division other than FSU, BC would be my choice because it has a perfect schedule. He picks FSU second and has this remark:
The top four teams in the Coastal Division - Georgia Tech, Miami, North Carolina and Virginia Tech - will win at least 10 of their 12 inter-divisional games with teams from the Atlantic, and help decide the Atlantic race: Though Boston College will lose at Florida State on Oct. 16, the Eagles will come out a game ahead in the final standings by virtue of dates with both Coastal patsies, Virginia and Duke. FSU only has a shot at one of the patsies (Virginia), and Clemson won't play either one.
10-2 for the Coastal is awfully ambitious. I'll go the other way and say 8-4.
Thanks to inevitable improvement on the league's worst defense, Florida State will outscore opponents by more than 10 points per game after averaging a 0.8-point advantage in 2009. But fans won't notice any discernible differences between new coach Jimbo Fisher's first team and the last decade under Bobby Bowden as the 'Noles fall short of 10 wins for the seventh consecutive season.
Obviously, nobody expects FSU to win 10 games in the regular season with a schedule featuring 7 of the best 30 teams in the country. Perhaps it could happen with a bowl game. Even so, I think FSU fans and anyone watching will see the differences. Forgive a national writer covering a lesser conference for mailing in his work on the ACC.
I guess the lesson here is that if you aren't sure who the best team will be, but are sure who the worst teams will be (a group of UVA, Duke, NC State, Wake, Maryland), choose the teams that play the bad teams the most (VT 4 of 5 and BC 5 of 5).
-Jimbo Fisher was on Havoline's "Football Saturdays In The South" this weekend. Here's video on youtube.
- Everett Dawkins is up to 282 lbs (played last season at 258). All the changes to the program have been remarkable. What could Florida State have been over the lost decade with competent coaching and administration? Having strength and training programs is common sense stuff at major programs. Three weeks ago some thought these results were optimistic. Now the chart needs to be redone as some guys have eclipsed the projections with three weeks to go:
- Phil Steele has Florida State playing Washington in the Sun Bowl. His reasoning must be that FSU will finish behind all 4 coastal teams. If FSU wins the division (probably a 40% chance), it will not end up in the Sun Bowl. I see FSU in the Chik-Fil-A (v. SEC #5), or the Champs bowl. On the other hand, I would love to see Ponder v. Jake Locker. The bowl deals the ACC worked are a complete joke, but honestly, the ACC would have an amazing bowl season given the terrible matchups:
Miami, Fl vs Florida
Va Tech vs Notre Dame
North Carolina vs South Carolina
Georgia Tech vs Tennessee (Tennessee might not even make a bowl)
West Virginia vs Clemson
Florida St vs Washington
Air Force vs Boston College
UAB vs Maryland- in cold weather
ACC would be favored in 6 or 7 of its 8 bowl games. This poor bowl deal could go a long way towards changing perceptions about the ACC. Beating poor competition seems to work for other conferences...
In recruiting, Florida State landed one of the top 35 players in the country. A new recruiting discussion thread is now available. Don't be afraid to jump in!
In basketball, RushTheCourt has its list of the top 20 ACC players. "The list is a combination of many factors: production, expectations, ceiling, skill set, statistics, efficiency, basically anything under the sun that a college basketball fan like myself obsesses over during the dog days of summer. Hopefully healthy debate is opened up in the comments section. Without further ado, here's my ACC edition":
7) Chris Singleton, Florida State - Singleton has all of the physical gifts and athletic ability to dominate and should transition to the next level as a 6'8 small forward with the wingspan to defend power forwards. As for the college game, it remains boom-or-bust for Leonard Hamilton's most talented and most frustrating player. As a prime example, Singleton sandwiched 22 and 23 point performances with a two point showing during ACC play last season. Free throw shooting and a mid-range game also need improvement.

I like Dabo and I really want to see how it shakes out with him. The only concern I have is that he’s playing the role of the firefighter. He’s been stomping out fires and trying to rebuild the team from what was left after Tommy left. I really want see the kind of coach he is when there are no fires left to be put out. And I think after this season, Dabo is at that point where its no longer a transition from Tommy’s team to Dabo’s team, but will basically be Dabo’s team. I’m not sure how he’ll do.
I think Dabo is a poor coach, so I hope they keep him.
My issue is with IPTAY. Clemson’s recruiting is going a bit crazy lately for a team that hasn’t won anything in any relevant time period.

Clemson
Seems like one could say they were under performing before Tommy Bowden, and he just kept it going. Before FSU joined the ACC I would think they had one of the bigger if not biggest football following for the ACC. They have a big stadium and tradition. I remember when they used to play UGA they seemed like they were owned in the series though. Then for a while FSU owned them. UGA and FSU were good teams, so it is understandable, but why does Clemson rarely get over the hump when facing other teams?
They weren't bringing in any talent in the 5-7 years before Tommy
This team will improve in '10... on its 16-16 conference record over the last 4 years.... after losing 20 games in the last 4 years... after having the 7th worst major-conference defense... after not even winning its own division in the ACC in the last 4.

That is sad, Clemson, while not FSU or Miami in name
should always be able to get some good talent.
Also, a friend thinks Tom O’Brien will be on the hot seat this year (just preseason musings). He is well known and N.C. State seemed to really want him. I do not think he has to worry about things for another couple of years. What do you guys think? WIll N.C. State have winning expectations? Would that be fair?
State is probably 40/60 50 make a Bowl game
Tom Obrien has had AWFUL injury luck. He has literally not had anything close to to a healthy team in his time there and if he gets canned someone can pick up a good coach there.

They will have a great 2011 class
They just struggle in recruiting sometimes because of their proximity to other major programs.
>>---l>
They massively undersigned the last two years.
When they haul in this class, I will point out that their 3-year haul is underwhelming.

Right. The indicator with Dabo will be how they do on the trail this year and beyond.
The turmoil within contributed to the problems over the last two years.

Player Weights
I’m loving this. Approaching 1830 with the starters. Massive with players like Luc and Werner in, around 1850.
Not an alcoholic, just an FSU grad.
Should there be any concerns about the players becoming significantly slower based on the weight increases?

Faster actually
FSU hired speed, agility, and flexibility coaches as well

Not to worry--this is LBM we are talking about.
Lean body mass accentuates athletic output, it does not retard it.
These numbers = bigger, better players.

Sun Bowl per Phil Steele
Interesting – considering he said that 7 of his 9 power rating projections had FSU winning double digit games this year. Would anyone travel to El Paso for that?
New Years in the desert?
And if you’re really ballsy, Tijuana? If I was mid-career I’d go, assuming we didn’t squeak by with a 6-6 record.

TJ is WAYYYYYYyyyyyyyyy far from El Paso.
About a 13/14-hour drive from El Paso to San Diego (which means “whale’s vagina” in German).
You can actually look right across the Rio (no muy) Grande from I-10 on the western side of El Paso…….Juarez looks like the kind of place the U.S. Military would invade if they only had oil or opium.

Must.
Would we still land in a dump like the Sun Bowl if we went 9-3. I’m assuming that would mean we would split with UF – Oklahoma and have 2 ACC losses?
Could because the ACC has awful bowls

phil steele is good for a national writer?
ok maybe, but thats like saying tony danza is smart for a guy from new jersey.
I think we are all past the point of using his predictions as any thing but a random guys prediction. and he seem to heather dinich (contradict) himself here. 9-3 doesnt = sunbowl. whether or not we win our division.

from a Macro perspective, I wonder how complete the predictions body of work is
Does said writer jot down, “this team should win 8 games, these guys will win 10”, without accounting for the opposite side of coin?
Do all the predictions add up to a perfect .500 record for all teams combined?
I also wondered whether or not those NFL draft projection services wind up telling 45 kids they’re 1st round material.

not trying to nic pic but
I don’t see anyway possible for 9-3 to equal the sun bowl. If we lose to UF and OU that mean 1 conference loss, or if we loss 2 or 3 confernce games that means we beat either OU or UF. Either way I doubt we fall lower then chick fila if we r 9-3

Sun Bowl has to be one of the worst Bowls... let's wish that upon Clempson or Miami.
In FrankD’s post last year about Bowl Gift Packages, the Sun Bowl stood out as one of the biggest loser-bowls.
My thoughts back then…
Too bad I don’t play for a team going to the Brut Sun Bowl. So much upside:
1. El Paso. Nicely situated next to Juarez, Mexico. This would be especially great if I was a Criminology major like a lot of Football players.
2. Brut samples in the lockerroom. Now everyone would smell like Chuck Amato.
3. Proximity to the Asarco Copper Smelting Plant! YAY! Arsenic and Lead for all. Nothing like playing ball next to an EPA SARA Title III Superfund Site.
4. A Free Brut Hair Drier. Especially useful for bald-headed players.
5. A Free Coin.
Talk about red carpet

I'm not so sure this Jimbo fella is the right man for the job.
The Sun is 4th with the Champs 3rd and the Peach 2nd...
The order of bowl selection will be: the FedEx Orange Bowl or BCS followed by the Chick-fil-A Bowl, the Champs Sports Bowl, the Brut Sun Bowl, the Meineke Car Care Bowl, the Gaylord Hotels Music City Bowl, the Advocare 100 Independence Bowl and the Eagle Bank Bowl.

Not that it's relevant to your comment or point, but Fed Ex is no longer sponsoring the Orange Bowl and now ESPN is scrambling to find a major title sponsor.
Depending on who ESPN manages to find as the major sponsor of the OB, this could impact many of the financials associated with this once prestigious bowl, although it will always probably sell out being in South Florida in January.

On the subject of bowls...
Last year half-way through the season, probably when our record was 2-4, I said to my brother:
“I just want us to make a bowl. I don’t care what bowl we make—any of them would please me at this point. I don’t care if FSU has to go to the Louisiana Porkbutt Stink Bowl. I just want to make a bowl.”
This year I’m feeling a little more picky. Sun Bowl? Yeesh.
