Truenole's 2010 Position Outlook: Defensive Line
Its about the time people start to evaluate different units. Just a few short weeks away from the start of the season and here's my take on the FSU defensive line in 2010. I'll call myself cautiously optimistic but as we all know the odds of us being worse than last year are pretty slim. The question is, how much the Noles will improve up front. We are still at the very least, a year away from being dominant/elite at the point of attack, but in 2010 I expect that we'll at least be effective.

Thanks for catching that
Something I know and must’ve made an error.
Stoops' defensive schemes in the secondary could pay huge dividends for the D-Line.
Personally, I’d like to see us mix in a lot zone coverages.

Zone coverage is definitely apart of the scheme
Trying to force long third downs and confuse offenses
I feel Werner has ability to be at the minimum “servicable” his 1st year. And in time the best of the bunch: he’s long, fast and nasty and will end up being a 290ish animal in a couple years.
DMac is the guy I’d love to see as a SDE instead of DT as I feel he’s more natural there but needs surpass Levy’s wants I guess.
Ameica, Land of the free and home to the entitled.
Everyone in the program seems to think Demonte belongs at DT
And Pete Carroll calling him the best 3-tech he’s seen (something I thought I heard) tells me he belongs at DT. I guess he could flex out in running situations but that doesn’t sound like something that’ll happen very often.

I'm convinced Demonte will be successful at either position
the coaches ask him to play IF HE makes up his mind to do so. He’s made a serious turnaround putting on the weight and everything so it’ll be interesting to see where he plays in the long run. Right now, we need depth/talent in the middle so that’s where he’ll be. Jimbo won’t be letting the desires of a single 19 yr old dictate the decisions for the program. If Demonte McAllister had the team attitude and work ethic of Everett Dawkins, he’d have a starting job on the d-line locked up tight. Hopefully he’s beginning to mature and understanding that he has a future in the NFL at 3-tech if he stays focused.
BOOM. Nailed it.

Perhaps even our best DL
This team will improve in '10... on its 16-16 conference record over the last 4 years.... after losing 20 games in the last 4 years... after having the 7th worst major-conference defense... after not even winning its own division in the ACC in the last 4.

There are many people who felt he was sort of a primadonna pretty boy last year
I wasn’t there so I won’t say what I felt. He should be much bigger than he is.
Some guys get wrapped up with girlfriends or the fashion industry or other stuff that does not help them play ball.

Exactly
He should be much bigger than he is
Had he been serious about gaining weight during his redshirt year he could be 290 of good weight. He was far behind schedule as recently as the spring.
Carroll said he's the best 3-technique he has EVER seen

I've heard this a lot
but where did he say it? Was he recruiting him?

Out of HS...
His lack of commitment has caused him to get passed by less heralded players…
Football is played with an oblong ball. Take your roundball and GTFO...
No offense, but I'm really tired of hearing that.
Also tired of hearing about Terrance Parks shutting down Julio Jones in January 2008. We can rest on our laurels with these anecdotes only so long.
Todd Van Poppel is tired of hearing what Pete Carroll said about Demonte McAllister.

Agreed
I’m ready to hear NFL scouts say outrageous things and tell great stories about how amazing our players are.
I for one would actually like to see the quote,
and then I would like to know why Pete’s technical 3-tech DT talent evaluation is held in such high regard. I never took him to be a technical genius (see NFL failure), I saw him as someone that could “sell” a program very well. (And by sell, I’m not precluding use of incentives to enhance his programs’ attractiveness.)
Because he has a long history with Monte Kiffin and the Arkansas guys who came up with the tampa-2 system which heavily utilizes the one-gap 3-tech

"Football Saturdays in the South" video
It’s one of the related articles in this one. I just watched it and highly recommend it.
I think the articles shows
we are headed in the right direction but Viloria and staff need another year of the strength and conditioning program to put on the necessary weight and Elliot/Haggins need another ytear to develop technique, stunts and overall cohesiveness as a unit. 2011 you shoud see a dominant DL especially with the DE position progressing as well. If we had that this year we would be a serious threat out there.
McTrio? Shouldn't it be the McQuateret?
McDaniel
McMcray
McCallister
McCloud
Hey, they should have a nick name:
Fightin’ Irish?
Black Irish?
The 4 McNasties?
idk. just thought I throw it out there.
In this particular instance I was only referring to 3 in particular
McCray, McAllister and McCloud. Which is why I said ‘McTrio’
We could probably back the Mcs with a hoard of Nigels
(Actually, I seem to remember someone else making a crack about a McNigel or something like that, some months back…)
The McNasty Quartet I like it =D

Dan Hicks - Mark My Words!
He’s still small this year but, he’s going to be a starter. He reminds me of Mario Williams though he’s currently two inches shorter (6’4" vs. 6’6"). I remember watching Williams leap over people at NC State going after the QB. Hicks was a speedy 100 meter hurdler in high school. Bud gave a good summary of him back in March. Since then, he was a defensive scout team co-MVP in spring and his name is always getting tossed around when positives are being mentioned. And, he’s second in the depth chart behind Markus White. Considering he was a two star recruit (who currently sits ahead of a four star junior on the depth chart), that’s not bad!

If you mean eventually, I can't rule it out
But I doubt he’s a starter this year. If he does though, would be impressive.
That wasn't clear was it
Starter next year. Should be closer to 265 by then with more experience unless incoming talent bumps him.
