Some UNC guys are saying through twitter

That Austin was the only player not cleared after their team meeting last night. If that’s the case, combined with Parker’s apparent return, the 2010 schedule just became significantly less fun compared to what we thought it might be earlier in the week.

>>---l>

by DKfromVA on Jul 21, 2010 10:30 AM EDT reply actions

You could go the other way....

And say UNC just became easier to run against.

Regarding Parker, someone mentioned Clemson having a better chance of beating BC thus putting us in control of our destiny (If we lose to say UM and UNC but sweep the Atlantic and BC’s only loss is to us, don’t they still go to the ACCCG?) This way, BC has more of a chance to lose one addl. game.

Maybe i’m off, however, removing Austin from the mix and making BC’s road bumpier sounds good to me. I’d hate to beat UNC because they have a playmaker out, but given our more difficult than desired schedule i’ll gladly take it w/out feeling dirty. Besides, he had to know he was in the wrong, correct?

......and let the paramedics sort 'em out!

by Scalpemall on Jul 22, 2010 8:01 PM EDT up reply actions

I was expecting more players than Austin to be out, actually

If it’s just him, it isn’t what I had hoped for earlier this week. Yes, BC’s road got tougher with Parker back for Clemson, but so did ours…

All sorts of schools are having ticket problems.

UGA, Clemson, South Carolina are a few I’ve seen in articles recently. Big drops in prices and still a drop in ticket sales.

Sort of.

Just if a lot of our regional “competitors” are struggling with sales even with reduced pricing (also saw Tennessee mentioned, forgot about them), and if we’re on pace for what we did last year…maybe we aren’t getting hit too hard in 2010. OR, maybe we already took that hit last year…

Either way it’s definitely good that we aren’t seeing stories on FSU about drops in pricing AND sales (at least that I’m aware).

This team will improve in '10... on its 16-16 conference record over the last 4 years.... after losing 20 games in the last 4 years... after having the 7th worst major-conference defense... after not even winning its own division in the ACC in the last 4.

CFB live just did a what if

on the two wide rights. In their scenario if both kicks are made FSU wins the MNC in 91, 92 and 93 and then close the decade with the 99 title. This leads to no drop off in winning and Bowden still coaching today.

Problem is even if we did win 4 titles in the 90s that would change none of the coaching moves as Richt would still leave, lil Bowden would still be promoted and then we still fall off due to bad offensive coaching. We also would still have an old staff unable to put the energy needed into recruiting as well.

It’s a shame becasue the off season is a perfect opportunity to do a NFL Match Up type program for college but ESPN plays to the lowest common denominator. I can’t blame them because that’s what sells but it’d be nice if there was a bit more substance and effort to educate the fans. Well, maybe they don’t do that because it’d make half their announcers look awfully dumb.

Agreed

While England still had commonwealth control over India and other African protectorates, the minieral, natural resource and produce extraction from Russia coupled with tons of labor, a people that were still subject to autocratic rule, and the inherent geographic advantages would have made the capitulation of Russia far more detrimental than English subjigation.

Interesting take...

I feel that a complete victory in Russia would have had a lesser impact than a victory over England. My reasoning is that no matter what, the Germans would have to face the United States. I can’t imagine a D-Day without Churchill’s “Fortress Europa”, and the prospect of occupying a conquered Russia would have the opposite effect man-power wise as a conquered England. Even with Italy bleeding at the belly of Der Vaterland, the mountains in Northern Italy posed a natural bottleneck with which the Allies NEVER broke free.

If the choice is between closing only one of the two fronts, I would most certainly close the Western Theatre and consolidate German holdings in the East.

TL;DR Russia is way too big to occupy, England is easier to hold, no D-Day, risk frm Italy is negligable…..brace for B-29 nuking Munchen

Well, if FSU had one the three titles in a row

I would think that other schools might have gone after FSU’s staff harder and sooner:
‘91: Brad Scott gets offer to head coach after the ’91 season – green to coaching, he takes FSU assistants Eason and Burnham with him to coach at East Carolina. Mark Richt considered too green to take over as offensive coordinator, Bobby turns to ND WR coach Skip Holtz as his offensive coordinator, who doubles as WR coach. Jimmy Heggins takes over as OL coach, Haggins still hired.
’92: after its second national title, FSU loses Chuck Amato, who leaves to become the head football coach at NC State.
’93: after its third national title, Mickey Andrew’s leaves to become the head coach at South Carolina. Very successful, he remains head coach until he retires following the season after his son’s death.
‘96: When Skip’s dad leaves Notre Dame after the ‘96 season, Skip moves on to become the head coach at Notre Dame. Mark Richt takes over as OC starting in the ’97 season.
’99: following the season, Georgia hires Rich Rodriquez from Clemson as its new head coach.
’99-’00: FSU again wins back to back national titles. College football teams raid FSU’s staff again. Richt is hired as head coach of West Virginia. Richt is replaced at FSU by Cincinnati QB coach Jimbo Fisher. Jimmy Heggins leaves for an OC position, replaced by Rick Trickett.

In reality:
Steve Logan hired as the head football coach at East Carolina after the ’91 season
after the ’93 season, OC Brad Scott left for South Carolina, taking John Eason and Wally Burnham with him.

Does the vigor of the NCAA investigation of Southern Schools have anything to do with B10 showing in BCS title games?

This is a little black helicopteresque but I think it’s a legit point. The NCAA is clearly targeting SEC schools and there have been no mention of any players from northern schools. I’m sure the folks in IN have heard a lot of things about the recruiting tactics in the south and are being pushed to take some action. NCAA has a long history of larger sanctions against southern schools then B10 schools. Personally I think there is a bias against the southern schools.

Way too paranoid

If this was an SEC thing then it wouldn’t have started with Austin. Also the SEC puts out more 1st round talent than the B10 so if an agent is going to grease some palms we know where they would head.

Who makes better HCs: OCs or DCs?

A co-worker of mine (and hug Bama fan) said that he thinks Fisher may have problems winning on an elite level because he’s an offensive guy and they don’t typically do as well as defensive minded HCs. Personally I think there are too many variables involved to make a blanket statement like that but I couldn’t refute his argument because I never really thought about it but I sure could use some ammo the next time it comes up in conversation.

Head coaching is more about management and decision making

thus making it more about who you hire and how you handle them. That ability is not inherent to either side of the ball so you could really argue that neither make better HCs, it depends more on the personality of the individual coach.

FSU player previews are out on Seminoles.com

Jermaine Thomas

Lost his hold on the starting job during the spring, when he was supplanted by Chris Thompson on the two-deep chart, where he’s a co-No. 2 pick with Ty Jones. Has struggled at times picking up assignments, but remains a real threat in open space. Fighting to reclaim his starting job from the outset of fall camp.

Not terribly surprised,

Thomas played well coming off the bench last season, I’m wondering if they like CT as the everydown back (as he seems to lower his head a lot more and runs tougher) and they like Tomas as his spell.

by harper.rb on Jul 23, 2010 3:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Not saying this isn't legit,

and I don’t know Fisher’s M.O., but this wouldn’t be the 1st time I’ve seen a starter demoted after spring as a motivational tool — for both the former starter and former backup.

Thompson is really exciting but his ball security still scares the tar out of me.

Old news.

NCAA 2011 clearly told us this. Thompson’s overall rating is 8 points or so lower than Thomas, but #23 clearly outperforms the field on the game.

All kidding aside though, it seems odd that a) Coach Fisher comment on a depth chart issue like this, and b) Seminoles.com has the info (I view them as mostly fact-based info, with little editorial content.

This is true, but he'll be 60 next year.

Factor in the stress of running that program, and the fact that he may actually want to enjoy the rest of his years on earth, I wouldn’t be shocked if he hung it up sooner than later.

After watching what happened to Bowden, and seeing Paterno being propped up on the sidelines, I would think it would persuade more coaches to consider going out “on top”.

Brown "looks" fine..."I" don't see any reason.

All subjective. Fact is that stress wears exponentially as a person ages, and perhaps Mack doesn’t have the same priorities that Bobby/Paterno had.

Is Muschamp not Texas HCIW? Why would he agree to that if Mack is sticking around for 10 more years?

Things aren’t always as they seem. Texas could win another one year now, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him retire if they do.

I'm not talking about how that particular situation appears to me.

I’m talking about what I think most people would do.

I’m almost certain there’s no clause in either Brown’s or Muschamp’s contracts stipulating that if one doesn’t step down/get promoted from/at Texas that they owe/are owed a certain amount of money like with Fisher.

I also think Muschamp is making about 3 times what Fisher was making as hciw and more than probably over 50% of FBS head coaches. He may not be in any rush, waiting his time to get a primo job, and Brown may not be in any rush, knowing he’s still got a few good years left ahead of him. If Brown sticks it out another 15-20 years I’m sure Muschamp will just take a job at some other big time program.

I can’t speak to Brown’s financial situation but the boosters at Texas can solve those problems outside of his contract and they have personal means to do it. In their words, they have five T. Boone Pickens in their booster ranks.

I don’t get the feeling that Fisher would leave FSU for LSU. LSU could probably pay him more money but he’s got an easier path to success at FSU, has already built up his coaching staff and recruiting areas, and has an emotional connection to FSU. I don’t get the feeling that Fisher will leave of his own accord anytime soon.

I think LSU will give Muschamp a go but be turned down quickly. I think they’ll do the same with Bo Pelini. That’s when they’ll start looking outwards and might include Fisher and Carl Pelini in their search. The problem is that neither of them have any HC experience at this point.

You don't think that asking a D1 football coach how an oil spill affects his program is a dumb question?

Maybe one day if I get to interview Nick Saban, I’ll ask him how Global Warming is interfering with his practices, or I’ll ask Urban Meyer if he does things differently during hurricane season.

I don't consider it dumb at all. I see it as a very valid question.

The people of Louisiana have taken a beating this decade and this last hit has destroyed an entire industry. Asking how a calamity of this magnitude has affected the community that he is a member of seems reasonable enough. As for Les Miles answer….well we all knew he was an asshat

Also, regarding Kirsten Dunst i’ve heard she’s not doing any more sequels.

Kasady and Brock shared a cell together at Ryker’s. The symbiote came to “rescue” Brock and left it’s offspring behind, which then hooked up with Kasady to form Carnage.

With a strong Junior WR class in the 2011 draft

What kind of year does Fortson need to be a draft candidate?

and does he leave if he is a 2nd/3rd round guy? (I know we can’t accurately guess these things, but what do you guys think?)

by harper.rb on Jul 29, 2010 6:44 PM EDT reply actions

Don't think he leaves for 3rd round

People don’t leave early if they expect to go in the 3rd. I think the ball is spread around too much for him to look to leave early. But if he ends up with 850+ with around 10 TDs he might make 2nd round and go. Hard to see him going above Jones and Green if they go, as well the kid at ND. I’m expecting Fortson to stay after the year unless he gets some horrible advice and believes it

by osceolafan2.0 on Jul 29, 2010 10:58 PM EDT up reply actions

I can't see him leaving but JF's offenses are good at putting WRs in the NFL in the first 3 rounds

Josh Reed (2nd Rd – 2002)
Devery Henderson (2nd Rd – 2004)
Michael Clayton (1st Rd – 2004)
Dwayne Bowe (1st Rd – 2007)
Craig Davis (1st Rd – 2007)
Early Doucet (3rd Rd – 2008)

With that said, it’s best that he stays for one more. In addition to the three you named there is Posey (tOSU), Broyles (OU), Childs (Arky), Johnson and Benjamin (Mia) and that’s not counting the SRs.

Just watched the Everette Dawkins interview on front page of Warchant.

Had some good things to say:

- Get the ugly part out of the way first — confirmed that, instead of playbooks, last year they had notebooks “that they could write things down in.” Wow.

- Just tipped the scales at 283. Not currently trying to gain any more weight; wants to keep quickness. If weight comes, it comes.

- Says Amp McCloud will surprise people. Did not play like someone that had taken a year off from football. Big and “just naturally strong.”

- Says Bradham is (surprise, surprise) strongest guy on team — “country strong.. can lift with DL, OL.”

- Confirmed what most here suspect about Greg Reid — he’s taken the leap up in CB play, so that he’ll be seen as a dominant CB that happens to be pretty good at special teams, too.

- Commented on how he was surprised how big Christian Jones was when he came in.

- Says LJ is small but not afraid of anyone, and he’ll let you know it.

- Said Brandon Jenkins is going to do well, has greatly improved rush defense.

by arrdub on Aug 1, 2010 10:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh, and the reason I slapped this next to depth chart was because it confirmed the Dawkins weight gain.

I’ll say, from my perspective, the comments about Amp McCloud give me even a little more confidence about the improvements that MIGHT be possible this year.

True, much of that is feel-good fluff.

But a couple facts, like weighing in at 283, lack of playbooks, etc. were “hard data,” so it wasn’t simply an interview full of repeated mantras about working hard getting ready for season, which you hear most of the time.

Also mentioned that Spring was the first time since he’s been on campus that the offense was ever able to stop the defense. That’s encouraging, isn’t it?

And, regardless of whether it is just his opinion (vs. demonstrable fact), you can tell by his reaction that he has a lot of respect for McCloud & Reid — he didn’t appear to be simply blowing smoke. Taken in context with a lot of other reports it seems to validate that those guys will contribute a lot.

He said in same interview that he played at 260 last year.

Contradicting some reports/speculation about nutritional strictness, though, he said a lot of it came via late night Wendy’s value meals, I think — and asked that this stay off the record (oops, Everette — nothing off the record when you’re on camera).

He did say he’s being intentional about not gaining too fast, so as not to lose quickness.. and said he has one of the 3 strongest squats on the team @ 600+ lbs. So I think even gut-weight will be good for him.

What are people's thoughts on Madden

I mean they did add Swagger levels

Swagger

NFL players aren’t exactly the most humble athletes in the world. Swagger is a new statistic in Madden NFL 11 that measures how likely a given player is to celebrate on the way to the endzone, or after a score. Chad Ochocinco, for instance, has Swagger to spare — he’ll celebrate if he even sees the endzone. The less swagger-y Jason Witten, on the other hand, will treat a touchdown like any old first down. What a grump.

Kenny White - Las Vegas Sports Consultants

Just texted him and Bruce Marshall from the same firm on local sports radio here:
“How do you think FSU will come out as dogs at Oklahoma, at Miami, vs. Florida this season?”
Response:
“Mark Stoops’ Arizona defenses always punched above their weight. The season is predicated on how soon they absorb the new defense and upgrade the pash rush. Will rely on young but talented d-backs. For the game at Oklahoma 12 is too high a number. The game at Miami will again go down to the wire, take the underdog Noles. Versus Florida they are plus 7 at home in Ponder and Rodney Hudson’s final games. FSU will be clicking on all cylinders by then, not only on offense, but defense as well. The hiring of Stoops is a HUGE boost, as talented as Florida is look for the Noles to end the 6 year skid.”
Don’t mean to get anyone overly excited, but the Chief Operating Officer of the largest oddsmaking firm in the nation is drinking the Kool-Aid.

Next year they should have a shot. Their really good recruiting classes will be at their peak in 2011. If they fall flat on their face this year maybe no shot but they should have one. If they fall apart, if at all, it will be 2012 with the weak class this past year (which has been made better by some worthless dudes not qualifying and the pick up of Henderson etc.) If they don’t at least go to a BCS game in 2011 it is on the coaches.

Made the mistake of perusing another site that shall remain nameless,

but has been mentioned here a num ber of times.

What I learned for the first ime today:;

— the problem with our D last year was not the staff. We had the same D staff in 2008 when we were ranked 15th. The problem in 2009 was simply that our DL was too small and inexperienced.

— the reason Jimbo does not start Gehres over Fortson, despite Gehres’ superior speed and equal size, is because Jimbo is a slave to certain “patterns”, and Gehres doesn’t fit his WR “pattern” (code for "he’s not black’). That was clear when we kept throwing to Fortson against miami.

— Fisher lost the miami game because he mismanaged the clock, wasting 44 sec at the end and leaving us only 27 secs so we couldn’t run and miami could just key on pass defense.

All this, from the same poster whom people were treating as the board guru who gets right to the heart of the matter.

Lovely.

And Dawsey has coached up a pretty good number of guys.

I fully believe that if we had given Miami the ball back with more than 30 seconds they would have scored.

We had been squib kicking because Hopkins and our coverage team had been so terrible that night.

And our defense was our defense.

I believe that our offensive coaches intentionally ran the clock down to prevent Miami from getting the ball back too soon.

And if you had a problem with the timing of the time outs, remember that the players on the field and the head coach are the only people who can call time out.

Unless we get a clear answer from JF and BB as to how the last minute played out, this is revisionist history we’re talking about.

While I certainly thought too much time ran off the clock… I have no idea who to place blame on and was not involved in the decision at the time, so who am I to say what should have happened.

Bird in the hand > two in the bush

in that situation, you play to score and score as quickly as possible, I’m sorry. I love Jimbo but that decision was a poor one.

Caz was down with 47 seconds to go, we didn’t get another snap off until there were 23 seconds to go and that was only because UM called a TO. I can’t find a clip of us wasting time but it was pretty clear that was what was going on at the time. If we get up on the ball quick on second down and ran the play maybe there aren’t two zeroes on the clock after the third down rollout to fortson.

The way it played out we can’t be VERY upset because in reality we got 5 shots from inside the 5 yard line and we need to be able to score in that situation. But moving forward, in that type of situation I am of the opinion that you score as quickly as you can and let the chips fall where they may. You cannot start concerning yourself with scoring with just the right amount of time on the clock because then you run the risk of wasting opportunities (like what would have been our 6th chance in this situation) when time runs out.

For me it’s like this, someone offers me the choice of putting a team on their own 35 (maybe 40 in this game, I can’t remember their average starting field position) trailing by 3 with 30 seconds to go and no timeouts or I get three plays inside the 5 against a very good defense (and only one of these plays can be a run), I take the former and let the chips fall where they may.

Similar to FSU-UM in 2008

IIRC, UM gets the ball at their 40yd line with 1:25 left. Moved all the way down to our 25, Dakota drops a Mavre INT, but time and downs eventually run out.

For those interested, I asked Jimbo Fisher about the clock management at the end of the Miami game. As you probably remember, the Seminoles let some valuable time melt off the clock after they moved the ball within the Miami 5-yard line

.

Here’s what Fisher said:

"I wanted to take the clock off. We had to come out of the huddle at 45 seconds, and I didn’t want to leave them any time. We’re on the 2-yard line, we had second down. We could have done two things – clocked the ball. Now you’re in third down, now you’ve got two chances. Or you call a play, and run it and be done with the huddle about 25 seconds. If we made it, we score. If we don’t, we call timeout and then we’ve got two plays to win it from there. I didn’t want to waste a play by clocking it or calling a timeout then because then we wouldn’t have been able to do it. And then we got the interference and we still got five plays from the 4. We still had five plays … So we did exactly what we wanted to do. Just when we came out of the huddle, the one time we lined up wrong – wasted about 10 seconds getting lined up."

I'm not so sure this Jimbo fella is the right man for the job.

I don't think this was smart

By taking the time off the clock you eliminated the option of a handoff or using the pistol. Its all about maximizing time efficiency with that type of down and distance. Got to score before you can even think about giving the ball back.

Of course, JF is a head football coach and I get paid to work in government, so I may not be the best at measuring efficiency.

My thoughts exactly, I couldn't believe it when I realized we were running clock

I’d never do that in NCAA.

by AMFKNole on Aug 3, 2010 2:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Because Jimbo was playing for the last shot and didn't want to put the D back on the field

All the comments above basically summarize it. We had as many chances to score as we would have had we clocked the ball after Caz went down with 47 to go. We had 3 chances at a walk-off win in that game. What more can you ask for?

Understood

I just thought Jimbo looked anxious and it was passed down to the players. (Leadership vacuums will do that)

A timeout taken earlier could have helped reslove some of the nerves.

That is all.

I think that Bowden had the headset on that point....

… How many times did that work out favorably last year?

by vegasnole on Aug 3, 2010 5:20 PM EDT up reply actions

How many time did that work out favorably since 1999??

SERIOUSLY, when was the last time you saw Bobby put on the headphones, only to watch a new strategy unfold successfully on the field??

Conversely, how many times did you see something disasterous or asinine happen almost immediately thereafter??

ANother topic: OU is vulnerable.

Yeah, I know that puts me in fantasy land in the editors’ minds. And I’m aware that Pphil Steele is the best national prognasticator out there.

But i can’t get past the fact that OU struggled greatly against anyone who was not a patsy last year:

13 pts against BYU. 13. Even when a starting QB goes out, a good offense should be able to put up more than 13 pts. with a rookie backup.

20 pts. against miami- this, after putting up 64 and 45 pts. against Idaho State and Tulsa, so we know Landry can throw the ball.

13 pts. v Texas Tech. This is 10 games into the season, folks. That rookie is no longer a newbie, and the TT defense is not All World.

3 pts. v. Nebraska. OK, they got Suhed. But 3 pts.? They should have been suied by their fans.

In short, OU struggled mightily against anything approaching decent competition.

And that trend is going to be magically solved, despite new starters, by game 2 this year? Really?

Haven't you read

Vegas knows all.
Seriously though, Phil misses on a couple of preseason top 10 teams each year. Last year it was Notre Dame and Ole Miss. Here’s hoping it’s OU this year.

The same could be said for us magically solving problems with new coaching personnel

No argument here.

The original point is they are vulnerable. This game is not— imho— as much as slam dunk for OU, as some folks on here seem to be saying.

Somewhere back in a long-forgotten post,

I broke out Landry Jones’ performances against top 50 FEI-defenses. The resutls were not too pretty. No FEI rankings at ESPN, but for simple reference you can look here.

Stanford was very similar to FSU last year in terms of defensive efficiency.. so, LAST YEAR, he would have certainly carved us up. But performances against middle of the road defenses like TTU, OkSU towards the end of the season were not spectacular.

Now, you have to guess he makes a big leap going through spring + camp as a starter, but it’s not a foregone conclusion that he will dominate. He has yet to slice up a decent defense in ~10-11 starts.

I would argue Stanford and OkSt

was solid competition. Not to mention what their D did which should be even better this year. And Fiesta asks if it is going to be magically solved? Well there is Rays point and then there is the other side of the coin. The Gates when 9-3 and then 11-1 the next year with pretty much the same players. Don’t think 8-4 to 10-2 or better would be that big of a jump for a program like OU.

As I referenced, I believe Stanford was a top 10 offense and (roughly) a bottom 10 defense.

I am talking about Oklahoma’s offense vs. other defenses. Stanford was NOT a quality defense.

I think the big pitfall with any of this is that OU should field a much improved OL this year, which I believe was the reason for the struggles noted above.

by arrdub on Aug 3, 2010 4:21 PM EDT up reply actions

hahaha alright

True or False?

Christian Ponder improved leaps and bounds against good defenses his junior campaign behind an improved oline compared to his sophomore season?

Different argument ;)

But I actually had the same thought; I don’t think there was a game Ponder could hang his hat on, besides perhaps the Wisconsin bowl game.

by arrdub on Aug 3, 2010 5:42 PM EDT up reply actions

He ran for his life almost all of 2008

Wisconsin game was great. Man their fan base thought they were going to thrash FSU.

Landry Jones had 5 picks 0 tds against Nebraska. Ouch. I reread your comments. And you said OU should have a better OL next year. From what I understand they really should. The loss to BYU if i remember correctly they had just taken a tight end and made it a tackle or guard. Bunch of triage going on there during the year. Would imagine them being vastly improved.

The question for this game will be where the line for FSU’s D improvement converges with the line for OU’s offensive improvement. Think OU is in a really good place to make a really big leap. Not sure FSU will be there. Not to mention FSU’s offense will have to play out of their minds as OU’s defense will be elite.

Elliott Porter...

What do we know about the guy? I guess he got out of his LOI to LSU and we are one of the places he might land

I read everywhere

That UT is where he might go depending on their own scholly #s and whether 3 other guys qualify.

He played DE in highschool

but @ 6’4 280 now. I wonder if he doesnt project to the interior. Both Coley and Haggins were recruiting him. So no telling.

I think LSU was the only school that wanted him on the OL

I'm surprised none of the 27 were Dec. enrollees

unless it was a problem with the 85 more than the 25 ship limit that was causing them to have oversignees.
