Full disclosure: I graduated from Alabama Law. When I watch SEC ball, I want 'Bama to win. But this story propagated by the Birmingham News about the trip Marcell Dareus took to Miami seems implausible. My friend summarized the events...(1) Marcell Dareus is friends w/ Marvin Austin (who appears quite dirty in these agent dealings), and Marvin told him he'd pay for a trip for him to Miami if he won a national title (2) Marvin bought the flight and hotel room for Dareus, but Dareus didn't think that was weird at all. (3) Despite not thinking it was weird, when he got to Miami, Dareus reimbursed Marvin immediatey for his flight. (4) dareus requested a receipt from his friend. He still has this receipt. (5) Dareus never went into the hotel room that Marvin bought him. (6) When he went to the party where the agents were, he asked to leave. "Hey old friend who I know so well that I don't think it's weird that you'd pay for my vacation, I know you said this was a gift, and we're friends, but i'm going to reimburse you immediately anyway. Oh, wait, I need a receipt too." If I were Dareus and had to make up a story, I would not mention that I ditched my dying mother to go to South Beach. I would claim that my credit card was maxed out when it was time to get the plane tickets, and that I told Marvin is he used his Gucci card to buy me a ticket, I'd use my cash to reimburse him. I wasn't payin' him for no hotel since this is South Beach and I never even went to bed. And I'd say I was working on keeping track of my finances, thus the need for a receipt. If you want a breakdown of what this means for Bama assuming Dareus' claims are believed, go here. And most of the readers over there who have commented also express a fair amount of skepticism over the story and timeline.
