USC Transfer Defensive End/ Linebacker Glen Stanley Chooses Florida State Seminoles

Released from his letter of intent to USC, defensive end/ linebacker Glen Stanley has chosen Florida State.  The top-15 JUCO recruit is eligible to play immediately.  Joe Schad is confirming what most following the situation have felt all along.

Glen Stanley said: ""My heart is at Florida State. I have a great connection with all the coaches."

Stanley said: "It was tough to leave USC because I liked the coaching staff but I want to play for a championship and play in a bowl game."

We first broke the Stanley news here and you can read all about his saga and view his highlights at the link.  This is a big pickup for the 'Noles and Stanley will help provide extra defensive depth at defensive end and rush linebacker.

How big is he?

And what will he be expected to play at after spending a bit of time in our S&C program?

from earlier article
Let’s start with some background on Glen Stanley. Stanley was a top-15 JUCO recruit this cycle. He would likely play defensive end for the ‘Noles and essentially give Brandon Jenkins a running mate at WDE. He is either 6’2" or 6’3" and somewhere between 235 and 245 lbs. He is rumored to run a 4.42 40-yard dash, and while that number is certainly inaccurate, he is a tremendously fast edge rusher.

He won’t gain much weight this off-season due to his late start, but he is big enough to contribute immediately at either WDE or LB. I think he has 2 years to play 2, so I assume the goal for him is to be around 265-270 next year with losing much speed/quickness. That would give him a serious shot at getting drafted just off of measurables.

by freshcollegeboy on Jul 30, 2010 12:44 PM EDT up reply actions

he doesn't have the frame to be that big

I bet he is 235 right now.

This team will improve in '10... on its 16-16 conference record over the last 4 years.... after losing 20 games in the last 4 years... after having the 7th worst major-conference defense... after not even winning its own division in the ACC in the last 4.

so do you think we'll have him at backer, especially after the Carr situation?

I’m not really looking forward to playing defensive ends that are lighter than our linebackers.

by freshcollegeboy on Jul 30, 2010 12:47 PM EDT up reply actions

He would be an edge rushing specialist.

3rd and long, 2nd and very long. A player of his size can be very effective in that role — see Lawrence Timmons as a junior. Similarly sized, explosive athlete.

As a footnote, I think size at one position can often be sacrificed; it is the across the board diminutive nature that gets you into trouble. We are getting closer to have enough size at other DL/LB positions that an occasioanl pipsqueak — with the right skillset — can be used to our advantage.

by arrdub on Jul 30, 2010 3:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Good point, arrdub

One reason why if FSU took R. Williams, I wouldn’t have minded. One guy a shade lighter than the rest probably won’t kill you, especially if he does something else particularly well.

In retrospect, it’s kinda like dating a fat girl.

Great news

I really think this is great news, especially to get a more mature guy at a position of need. Even if he is a little undersized right now. We need a number of guys so we can rotate in fresh bodies.

I also like the fact that recruits, right or wrong, perceive that we are headed towards a championship soon. This is some Kool-Ade!

IMO USC should never be left out of the title discussion.

They rake in talent every year, they play in a pitiful conference. Seems like they just drop a game annually to a crap PAC 10 (12) team, and that keeps them out of the hunt.

However, with the great exodus, that obviously will probably change.

USC is down to 70 scholarship players RIGHT NOW

What will they look like AFTER 3 seasons of scholarship reductions/player defections??

My guess is a LOT closer to San Diego State then 2005 USC.

by DRusso97 on Jul 31, 2010 1:32 PM EDT up reply actions

They should be left out for the next 6 years imo.

They signed 20 in 2010 and at least 2 have already left. They’ve already had several upperclassmen leave the program. And then they can only sign 15 for the next 3 years?

I mean, I read something that said USC only has 7 or 8 LB on scholarship for THIS year.

At LEAST

Down this year, plus 3 more seasons of additional crippling scholarship limits, means it will take that much longer to rebuild the talent & depth necessary to be what they used to be.
Unless they have a Butch Davis-type running the program to pack crazy talent into a school recovering from probation…..they are looking at 6-10 years of shitty play (by comparison). Every year they are down makes it that much harder to climb out of the hole….and the rest of the Pac-10(12) will benefit.

Lane Kiffen’s recruiting lies pitches won’t be nearly as appealing in the midst of 4, 5, 6, 7 loss seasons.

When I say "projected depth chart"

Here’s an example…

Or put another way. Here’s what I see for 2011

Strong-Side Defensive End
58 Dan Hicks 6-4, 260, R-So.
95 Bjoern Werner 6-4, 295, So.
94 Darious Cummings, 6-3, 285, So

Weak-Side Defensive End
49 Brandon Jenkins 6-3, 255, Jr.
96 Toshmon Stevens 6-5, 250, R-Jr.
Glen Stanley 6-3 250 R-Sr.

Defensive Tackle (not Nose Guard)
93 Everett Dawkins 6-2, 285, R-Jr.
97 Demonte McAllister 6-2, 290, R-So.
94 Darious Cummings, 6-3, 275, So.

Nose Guard & Defensive Tackle
99 Jacobbi McDaniel 6-0, 300, Jr.
91 Anthony McCloud 6-2, 310, R-Jr.
90 Moses McCray 6-2, 310, Sr.

Weak-Side Linebacker
7 Christian Jones 6-3 240, So.
57 Holmes Onwukaife 6-3 245, R-Fr.

Middle Linebacker
48 Jeff Luc 6-0, 250, So.
11 Vince Williams 6-0, 252, R-Jr.

Strong-Side Linebacker
11 Vince Williams 6-0, 252, R-Jr.
22 Telvin Smith 6-3 220, So.
43 Nigel Terrell 6-2 230, So.

This team will improve in ’10… on its 16-16 conference record over the last 4 years…. after losing 20 games in the last 4 years… after having the 7th worst major-conference defense… after not even winning its own division in the ACC in the last 4.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves just yet....

Fresh off my award-winning analysis of his JuCo film (:modesty), allow me to offer my take:

Right now, he is behind. WAYYYYYyyyyyy behind, in every way you can imagine. S&C, environment, scheme, technique (of which he has virtually none), etc.
Right now he is a 3rd-team WDE…..but one with A LOT of upside who will be expected to rise up the depth chart & get meaningful snaps fairly soon. If he is coming here wanting to learn & bust his ass, I would not be surprised to see him provide 15-20 quality snaps/game on defense as well as kick coverage ST units. I see no reason why this would not be the case, or Jimbo would not have offered him.
I would “guestimate” him to be in the 230’s right now, with an outside chance of playing @ 240. Figure a solid offseason leaves him @ 250/255 range for 2011 with a solid shot at starting when Markus leaves.
Expectations for this season should be fairly low. Anything he provides should be viewed as a bonus….I myself would be ecstatic if he posts 4 sacks and a half-dozen QB pressures.

Seeing as how that would about double the production of the entire D-Line last year,

I’d be pretty happy with those numbers from a backup myself.

9 or 10 redshirt seniors

to our 4, not to mention more depth and tons of talented players that have been in the same system their whole college careers. BYU could have won that game if not for a few fortunate plays including a pick for a TD that should have been called back for PI…BYU had almost the same amount of yards as FSU with a lot less plays…you know what I’ll look up the numbers for you…

TOP FSU: 39:51 and BYU 20:09 So half the possession time with about 45 less yards than FSU. 10.7 y/pass for BYU. It is a good thing they couldn’t stop FSU’s offense. How much you want to bet OU’s defense is worlds better than BYU’s?

Whether it’s backup DE, LB, special teams. Another great pickup from the new staff. It is amazing to see the transformation of the Seminoles in such a short amount of time. Jimbo and co. have made it cool to be a Florida State Seminole again. Stanley becomes another piece of the puzzle in their rise back to a consistant national title contender.
