2011 Recruiting Discussion Thread #4 [closed]

Welcome to the recruiting discussion thread.  Please refer to the Recruiting Board for information on prospects.  We are asking readers comment here instead of the recruiting board so that the recruiting board will load quicker.  Feel free to talk recruiting news, rumor, information, etc.  Amateurs and experts are all welcome.  No question is too simple.  Have a projected class?  That's fine as well.

Once this thread fills up, we will start a new one.

Also, please don't fish for information from subscription websites.  Violators will be banned from this thread.

Notes:

  • RB Devonta Freeman commits to Florida State. 06.24.10.

FAQ:

1. Are the five-star Texas RB considering FSU?
Somewhat, but FSU seems to be outside looking in.  We know FSU is in their top four both, but we don't buy the hype. Malcom Brown will most likely go to Texas, and Aaron Green will likely join his cousin at Nebraska. New article suggests that both still have FSU in their top four. Credit Coach Eliot for his Texas connections getting FSU's foot in the door.  If they decide to officially visit, we will add them to the board.
2. What happened to De'Joshua Johnson?

Was not able to qualify for Florida State.  Appears he needed much more work academically than what was represented...
3.  Will FSU take 2 WRs now instead of just Rashad Greene?
This is tricky.  FSU is loaded at wide receiver and doesn't need to take another.  FSU could have as many as 13 wide receivers in 2011.  That's more than optimal and is not a good use of finite resources (85scholarships).  However, this answer likely depends on the future of Jarmon Fortson (could go pro early), Taiwan Easterling (baseball, but when?), and Cam Wade (don't see many non-contributing 5th-year seniors on the roster).  The coaches will be in the best position to determine this, and we are not going to second guess their move here.
4. What's up w/ Tony Steward?

Steward camped at Clemson over the weekend.  Clemson is in desperate need of linebackers because its current crop lacks both quality and numbers.  Plus, Steward's idol is Ernie Sims, who was coached by Clemson LB coach Kevin Steele.  Steward named Clemson his leader following the camp.  Despite this, we are confident in FSU's position with him.  Steward is very respectful and has said good things about everyone.  Clemson will be an underdog in 5-7 games this season and it would be hard to see them land the top LB prospect in the nation from out of state while finishing with 5 or 6 losses.  While we are mindful that Clemson can promise him an immediate starting job playing for Ernie Sims' former coach while FSU cannot (FSU is loaded with linebacker talent), we think FSU is in good position at the present time and that FSU's position will only improve from here.  It will really depend on whether the kid prefers immediate playing time or the better program.

Not only Lynch and Newberry

It has been said that we’re back in good with Drew too. At least that
is what has been said on ThaRinger.

I think the Drew stuff is more optimism than anything solid.

Apart from the fact that he made the Jimbo Fisher camp a little bit ago and brought his family. Add in the inherent advantages we’ve had from the beginning (location, his growing up a fan, Smiley being on the team), and the mess with UGA’s AD, and you got people feeling good.

Whats the lure at LSU that they always tend to be in the top list of players?

Firstly, I think Les Miles is an average coach (falls in the category of coaches who do less with more)! They can always have the 1st shot @ Lousiana kids but suprised to see them getting their share of stars from other states.

All that is true

But it still didn’t keep them from being a national title contender for a very, very long time. Miles isn’t Saban, but he’s still getting them basically the second best level of performance in recent history.

That program is poised to be one of the top 10 programs of the next 25 years, imo.

Don’t you mean “Keeping” them there? It shouldn’t be hard for LSU to get good players, but they’ve got a recent NC to their cred now.

IMO it’s easier to maintain than to build. Miles won’t last long if he keeps it up, though. The fans patience is running thin.

All I know

is he says FSU is not his goal and he wants to be close to home for his daughter. How close is close depends on the person, but it doesn’t seem like it’s clearly FSU out front.

I personally don’t mind him going elsewhere. Don’t think this makes or breaks anything or a huge loss if we miss out on him.

But no, it doesn’t say UCF is where he’ll land (from what I skimmed).

I think he has to say things to keep options open

UCF’s academic standards are much lower than FSU’s because they are in the Big East. Say he can’t get in to FSU… he needs to leave the door open for UCF.

UCF’s admissions standards are actually very close to those of FSU. Closer to ours than USF is to UCF’s.

So you think only one of Jenkins and Stevens is really good.

What makes you think Stanley is definitely better than anything we have? Is he better than moving Bradham to DE on rushing downs and using some combination of Luc, Williams, Carr and Smith at LB?

I’m just not sold on this guy definitely making a difference.

Question

What school do y’all think will benefit the most from USC’s probation? I was reading some stuff, and I believe the Cal Bears have somethin’ cookin’ over there. I noticed that they are taking some ballers from all over the USA.

They signed two 5 star players Keenan Allen from NC and a Linebacker. Their average star ranking per recruit is 7th. Plus, they have some NFL talent on the roster, and some decent players in the NFL.

I think that they will benefit greatly from the USC probation.

by LincolnHighNole on Jul 8, 2010 5:21 AM EDT reply actions

Cal, yes

Oregon, and definitely UCLA with Neuheisel and Chow. Sark at Wash probably should benefit as well.

So at least 4 teams will start picking up USC’s recruits. It looks like the PAC 10 will be more like the ACC of late. Lots of decent teams, but no clear-cut dominate power.

Regardless of how it closes out – considering we only have 7 seniors in our two deep offensive and defensive rotations…… That is sick.

by vegasnole on Jul 8, 2010 2:09 PM EDT reply actions

The thing I keep thinking about is that no matter how this class ends

The fact that we have been big players for so many of these guys, and landed a few, with three 7-6 seasons in the last four, is very encouraging. It’s really remarkable when you think about it, and the fact that most of these kids can barely remember us being very good.

How many teams that haven’t sniffed a conference championship (in a mediocre conference), let alone been a top 10 team or challenged for a national championship, are competing like this in recruiting?

Man, what our recruiting will be like if we can log a couple 10-win seasons, wow.

Seantrel's support system or UM football's

I mean I don’t expect the Canes to maximize the talent of all their players bc of their support system lagging behind what other schools have. I didn’t mean Seantrel’s home life

by osceolafan2.0 on Jul 9, 2010 9:03 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't think much of their oline coach

but I haven’t followed their OL recruiting to know if recent problems are results of talent or coaching. But UM has older facilities and I think their “non-coaching” staff (the guys who are coaches but can’t be called that due to NCAA regs) is smaller than a lot of schools. And the instability I brought up a few posts ago was in regard to how they seem to lose at least once coach every year for the last 4 or so years. I think coaching changes are one thing when you are on top of the mountain but another when you are still climbing. Off the top of my head they have changed OC, DC and Dline coach/recruiting coordinator in the last 2 or 3 years.

From Luke

-Dwyer TE Nick O’Leary has proven to be one of the top talents in the state of Florida, and his recruitment is going to be studied ever so closely in the months to come. O’Leary was sporting a Florida State hat Saturday and for now it seems like the Seminoles are in good position for the talented tight end. He did not claim a leader, but mentioned FSU first in his list of schools that included Miami, Florida, Georgia, Alabama, and others.

This is far from over for anyone.

Maybe we could do a prospect draft on here for anyone one who wanted to?? Maybe just players from FL and GA or maybe the whole southeast? Just an idea

So he is committed to Clemson but his child in Forida is still on his list of favorites?

These young men are little more than children and should not be chastised by us for acting like children. However, this young man needs to butch up if he has become a father. IMO, the staff should look carefully at the character issues here, not because he has become a father, but because of the way he has chosen to handle the information.

Cortez is a waste of time IMO.

I’d rather spend the time going after someone who wants to play at FSU then another kid that changes his mind 100 times. We truly do need to pound Clemson this year though.

Decommitments do suck, though. He should just name leaders.

Agree with you Trick

People are too tough on kids like this, and in my opinion, Elam for that matter.

They forget that not only are these teenagers, many of whom with very few positive adult role models growing up, who are basically “battling” with the super-recruiters out there, for our school and every other top school. These guys can’t always be prepared to deal with the likes of Coley, Ogeron, Urban Meyer, etc. Most handle it pretty well, obviously a few struggle with it.

Don’t you think FSU and Clemson have been asking for his committment? I would think they are.

I imagine he’s having a really hard time with the decision, and can’t imagine having to live with it another six months. I bet he keeps thinking that basically by comitting, it can be “over”, and it keeps turning out that it doesn’t end the contact from coaches and his general indecision.

I’m not saying it’s the most mature way to handle the situation, but I can’t kill the guy. Tell you what, I’ll hammer the guy like the rest of you IF you can show me that FSU stopped pursuing him after his original committment to Clemson, and that Clemson stopped contacting him after he committed to us. I think that’s highly unlikely. So I think the recruiters are just getting the best of the kid.

Perhaps as an upperclassman.

You have like 82 spots you have to fill to have quality depth at every spot and year-to-year balance. The final3 typically go to a special teamer or a walk on.

I expect FSU to end that, ala Saban. Perhaps a walk-on gets a schollie once every few years. 85 schollies are a limited resource. FSU will probably use them all. It can definitely afford to do so.

I argued with myself over Auburn last cycle.

Sadly, just sometimes you have to accept it. Loyal fanbase adoring you, getting away from the state of Florida, seeing snow but not hating it like an Cleveland or Chicago. Kevin Steele can appeal to some. Marlin Lane is a great friend, and is probably selling Cortez on them being buddy buddy through college. Playing time. And most of all, who won the ACC Atlantic last year? Who’s got a system that hasn’t been tested? We all love to think we’d easily choose FSU if we were being recruited, but I’d actually consider other schools. FSU is a gamble football wise. A ton of talent has been wasted (albeit from previous regimes, but negative culture infects schools). If we’re mad about losing Cortez to Clemson, imagine the Gators feeling about losing Reid to FSU. Their 5 star (although decommitting during the UA week) goes to their inferior rival? It isn’t always easy to understand recruits.

Bull.

No one will convince me that Auburn’s recruiting isn’t the result of their boosters getting sick of losing to Alabama. There’s no way that Gene “Iowa State” Chizik and his staff turned a team in the bottom third of SEC recruiting into a top 4 national powerhouse that’s on the hot list of all the top recruits nationally. BS. I don’t buy it even a little bit.

Bull? Are you implying I'm making it up?

These schools have things to sell players on.

Seriously, Ohio State probably would’ve been a better choice for Lamarcus Joyner. Yet FSU ended up with Joyner. Joyner gambled big time that Jimbo Fisher and co. were going to bring in a great coach like Mark Stoops. Nonetheless, Ohio State puts corners and safeties into the league.

The best thing you can do is just listen to what players are saying. Listen to what the insiders are saying, and accept defeat. FSU’s not Florida, Alabama, or Texas at this point. FSU’s on the same level as Clemson and Auburn. Have to prove on the field that FSU’s better before FSU stops losing recruits to teams like that.

Not implying that you're making it up.

I’ve just read recently about how Auburn is really turning it around in recruiting lately and I just don’t buy it. Not that it’s legitimate, anyway. There is something VERY fishy going on there.

@Nole2005, you’re right, we both pulled top 10 classes. The big difference is that we pulled kids that were big leans, legacies, etc., most of which were all in state. Auburn overnight became a regular top 3 on the who’s who of national recruits with the likes of USC, Ohio State, and UF. And most of those kids were skill position guys.

You don’t go from being a nobody lately to national recruiting powerhouse without either a great coach coming from the pros or a successful college program. Not Gene Chizik from Iowa State with a mediocre record. Just my opinion, but the Auburn boosters are making this happen behind the scenes.

I know that money flies all over, and perhaps I’m ignorant, but I don’t think FSU does much of it. I know we seem to lose out early on kids that are pretty clearly up for auction (Darrell Scott comes to mind, as well as Kenneth Page). So, either we don’t bid or we’re very cheap. Lol.

I've about had it with recruitng.....

At the end of the day I hope all of these kids do what’s best themselves. I’m just saying though!

by Noletorious on Jul 14, 2010 1:39 AM EDT reply actions

Really like the kids we have, but can't help but be a little concerned.

Guys like Stample, Freeman, etc. were under the radar prospects that the staff clearly did the work to uncover and bring on board early, and I can appreciate that value.

However, we seem to be taking some serious hits on the highest profile guys of late — we’re talking Drew, Steward — top 10/15 recruits that we were the presumed leader for, who now appear to be drifting away. Smacks too much of the Percy Harvin, Marvin Austin circumstances of the past. The season’s performance is critical, and that oh-so-difficult schedule really puts us in quite the pickle in the face of what will be an onslaught of “the FSU of Old is Dead” by our adversaries with Bobby out of the picture. We’ll be an easy target for more defections if we take the bumps and bruises that many expect.

Further, I understand the rationale behind recruits choosing based on depth charts and concerns of that nature, but in the end, recruiters either overcome circumstances and convince kids that they are the future, or they don’t (see Zook, Ron). Don’t get me wrong — I think what Jimbo and crew did last season was nothing short of phenomenal. However, in their first FULL year of recruiting under Fisher’s sole guidance, the staff is facing a really big test. So far, they’ve done some amazing (“Zook-like”) work with so little to demonstrably validate the direction of the program, but they need fuel to keep the fire going.

Which brings me to an important component of the formula for fixing much of this…. smack Clemson in the mouth and take back OUR division. We need some measurable success to hang our hats on in the face of the lingering ACC power vacuum that SOMEONE has to fill.

I really thought Clemson was tumbling into decay when they named Dabo HC, but I genuinely beleive Kevin Steele saved them. His defense and recruiting prowess seems to be keeping that team afloat (if only UT had managed to pull him away — alas.) In light of this, I’d argue our contest against the kitties this fall is the single most important game of the season. A function of Tommy riding Daddy’s coat-tails was the Clemson team of late being arguably constructed of players that would have been part of an ongoing FSU dynasty — Spilller foremost, but guys like Jacobi Ford, DeAndre McDaniel, Brandon Thompson, etc. all had reasons to be here, and would have been if we hadn’t faltered. That power drain has to be stopped and have the door slammed on their FL recruiting inroads. We need to resume taking guys out of THEIR backyard, as in days of old (Greg Jones, the Bouleware’s Bros., etc.), instead of vice versa. These truly elite FL talent defections are hurting us — if a Florida HS kid doesn’t like UF, he should come to FSU.

While a victory over UF would inarguably be the feather in the hat that would out-dazzle all others, in terms a winnable game that could be key in determining future dynamics in our conference and program trajectory, Nov. 13th is where it’s at. I’m hoping for something along the lines of 34-13, just for good measure.

by arrdub on Jul 14, 2010 10:18 AM EDT reply actions

Quickly,

Breaking this down would make a good post.

Essentially, you’re not thinking like a kid. These kids don’t have real memories of Peter Warrick. That’s how old they are.

When they were 13 we went 7-6
When they were 14 we went 7-6
When they were 15 we again did not win our own division
When they were 16 we had the worst season in 35 years.

Clemson has specifically targeted 2011 for several years. lemson has been planning this 2011 recruiting season and 2010 football season for a LONG time.

This was to be the year Willie Korn and DaQuan Bowers are All-Americans before Jumping to the NFL.

Clemson was working these 2011 kids when they were freshmen and sophomores, while everyone else was working on older kids.

Then a few things happened. Tommy Bowden fired. Dabo was the recruiting coordinator, organizing the 2011 Florida raid.
Clemson had a full staff recruiting, while we did not. They always had a FULL staff recruiting. FSU did not. Still, Clemson grabs the 2011 kids it put in work for, but after that, CU will pull back some from Florida, both by choice and by force (FSU)

They’ve built the relationships with these kids for 3 years now. With a full staff. We’ve been operating with what, 4 coaches for the last 3 years? Much like our player development and new scheme, we are playing catch up. And we will get there.

Like I said, look individually.

FSU did not recruit Bellamy. He never even mentioned FSU. Mom grew up with a Clemson coach. I am happy he is at Clemson and not UF because Clemson won’t develop and utilize him like UF would.

Steward- reasons for this are clear. He will start for them from day one and play from an amazing LB coach. We cannot offer that and we’d be lying if we tried.

Watkins- No interest in FSU. Miami-UF-Clemson battle all the way, until Miami said he didn’t have grades. FSU got its WR this time already. I would much rather he be at Clemson than UF or Miami.

Amazingly, FSU out-recruited Clemson the last 2 years. Clemson won the battle the 3 years before that. Everyone expected Clemson to do very well in Florida this year because they have targeted Florida 2011 for 2-3 years now.

But I expect Clemson to seriously pull back in 2012, at least in Florida. Both because they did not target 2012 like they did 2011, and because FSU will keep rising.

Also

Clemson has taken a few kids so far with whom their fans are outright angry.

http://www.shakinthesouthland.com/2010/7/14/1569771/clemson-accepts-commitment-from-lb

Not only that, but it looks like they might not get Rome and Shell, two Clemson 5*/4* legacies.

FSU is more committed to winning now than FSU is, but Clemson was more committed to winning throughout the decade and were a much better program. I am not worried that they will be the better program going forward.

Will enjoy watching Clemson's season this year

Still think we end up with Steward, and I just want Watkins away from UF. Wow that kid is good, just watched his stuff

That's a heck of a response with a lot insight, Bud.

Appreciate it. I didn’t know staffs targeted a particular class like that — “FL in 2011” — but that might explain a lot.

The reason I emphasized the need for a win over Clemson because our clout will indeed depend on performance — consistent with what a kid with no memory of the dynasty years would expect. I still think our name carries almost a subconscious clout with some kids, but it has to be validated with performance to carry significant weight. Certainly we have more clout than Clemson — who is not only out of state, but has little to no history behind their name and hasn’t performed much better even in recent years.

Anyway, hope we can further the deterioration of their grand plan for storming our state with a big fat “W” planted on their faces this fall.

Any chance we get Isaiah Crowell?

I absolutely love his film and think the kid will be a stud RB in college. What would you put our chances at… 10%?

Just wanted to say, "thanks" again to the staff and contributors of Tomahawk Nation

The “other site” is locking threads about Harris and others, saying it’s premium information, when it has been discussed in many other forums, and for quite some time. So, thanks to everyone here.

Niles Stample

Was watching his highlight video on ESPN recruiting webpage, the kid can outright run and tackle, they dont have any videos of him playing in the trenches but love the motor on him, looks like a sure tackler and he is darn quick! Think he was returning a ball in the 1st video!

Quotes attributed to Wilder Jr (but you never know these days)

“Some (coaches) have been trying to push me to linebacker but I just tell them to not recruit me if they want me for linebacker. I have a passion for running back and that’s what I’m going to play. You can control the game. If you actually have the football in your hands you can actually control the game. It’s all what you do with the ball so I like to have control over the game”

From the recent Nike 7ON championship event. Strange things happen in recruiting, like a big DT from Fla going to play ball in New Mexico, so I am holding out a sliver of hope.

by osceolafan2.0 on Jul 15, 2010 7:52 PM EDT reply actions

The big DT to New Mexico will be accompanied by his father, who was given a position there as well

Yeah i remember the word getting out

I thought the reaction of the ESPN guys when he put on the hat was funny though. Poor kid couldn’t even think of a good reason to explain the choice.

Steward vs Wilder jr

If wilder jr played linebacker full time witch player do you think would be better?

Both are rare talents.

I’d take Steward, but it’s extremely close

Charlie Ward is in Tally. I hope he takes a visit to his home in Thomasville, GA

Ray Drew reminds me of Ward. Both have outstanding talent and are great people/men of god. I think Ward could help make Drew a Nole lean again and stress that Drew needs and could still be involved in his church if he went to FSU.

by NOLEFAN1 on Jul 16, 2010 1:58 PM EDT reply actions

Ward and Drew talking could potentially be an NCAA violation

The only ways it wouldn’t be a violation is if the meeting was random and not planned or if Drew attends a camp where Ward is an instructor. I believe Drew could also seek out communication with Ward to some extent, but it can’t be encouraged or facilitated by FSU.

by nolesblogger on Jul 16, 2010 2:30 PM EDT up reply actions

And I'm almost certain it's fine if it occurs on FSU's campus.
