Where I Come From: My Favorite Players
This post is sponsored by EA Sports NCAA Football 2011.
We continue exploring the contours of Seminoles fandom with a discussion of all-time favorite 'Noles. Along with the obvious guys who inspired us all and can be identified by their first name alone -- Chollie, Derrick, Deion and the like -- we've all got our favorites who especially stand out in our minds years later.
Devin Bush is perhaps my favorite 'Nole of all time. His 1993 interception against Miami ended UM's 31-game regular season win streak and I remember celebrating with my family.
Florida State Seminoles Devin Bush (via NeroUltra)
Another favorite of mine is Andre Cooper.
Great Moments in Orange Bowl History - 1996 FedEx Orange Bowl (via OrangeBowlObie)
I also have to give love to Rodney Hudson, who despite playing on some bad teams, has been a joy to watch at left guard.
It's your turn? Who are your favorite 'Noles of all time? Why? Are they superstars or relatively unheralded players that have a special place in your fandom?

I was there baby
I remember that 1993 game like it was yesterday. I was going nuts after that interception. I also enjoyed the Ward to Friar pass. He beat Rohan Marley on that play (who married Lauren Hill btw). I’ll never forget that at that time the Chilli Pepper song “give it away now” was popular. If you remember the song, there is a lyric “Bob Marley Poet and a prophet, Bob Marley taught me how to off it” and so on".
This inspired us to sing “Rohan Marley beaten by a white guy”. Dancing the whole time…. Great game and great times.
Hahhaha that is a sweet story
I was 8 when it happened but it’s one of my most vivid FSU memories.

Dude I was there it was freaking awesome.
Cathartic to finally beat the damned Canes.
The Funk Phenomenon.
I remember the friar play from seeing it on "noles in 93 countdown to glory"
The Deckerhoff call on that play was awesome

Frier. I have a lady friend Carol from Live Oak who used to baby sit Matt Frier when she was a young girl.
Whenever Matt caught a pass, she would always say “I used to change his diapers.”

Frier
I dated his wife’s sister in 99-00 and he has a really nice FSU room at his home with Seminole tiles in the bathroom. Really nice guy.

Miami game, 1993... First hangover of my life.
I wake up in the morning feeling like death and tell my friends to go on without me— leave this wounded soldier on the field of battle, as it were… they leave me…
I drink a Coke, and start to rally. I decide to man up, and make it down to the game just in time for kick-off…
Our seats, were in FRONT of the Marching Chiefs… I think, these days, they don’t sit people in front of the chiefs, but back then… it was a different time… Doak was under construction…. I don’t know what it was, all I know is that It was loud. My head hurt. It was awesome. I truly believe my life would have been different if I didn’t “nole up” and go down to that damn game and get my ears blasted by the band and watch FSU beat the snot out of miami. Cheers to ’93!
That was pretty cool.
Good effort by him, too.
deio
nobody got the entire stadium on its feet like deion. not even p-dub. i loved third down because it meant we were one play from prime time getting a chance for an unbelievable return. i swear that every time he touched the ball there was a coin-flip chance you were going to see a TD. he was amazing.
best deion play was against michigan state at doak. he had shut down andre rison all day (both wore #2). rison was frustrated and deion started to bait the quarterback into throwing his way (blake ezor? can’t recall). he played off rison so far that the QB heaved a shot at the end zone. rison came perfectly underneath it and it would have hit him perfectly in stride just in front of the end zone if deion hadn’t closed in a flash, leapt up and intercepted it.
deion is unreal.
That's awesome. program has so much history.

That interception was sick. I was at that game as well. The whole stadium sucked in when the pass was released because Rison looked wide open. Then Primetime just hit another gear. I’ll never forget it, just ridiculous speed and skill.
This Was My First
…live FSU game. I was a freshman, walked to the game from Broward Hall with my roommate. Stood and did the chant all game.
IIRC the INT came right before halftime in the south endzone. Rison was open (supposedly) by a mile. I’d never seen someone close on the ball like Deion did. I’ll never forget it.
Also vividly remember him firing up the crowd before the punts.
The crowd seemed to do the chant then more continuously than now, and with less help from the band. I was hooked! Amazing memory from the old erector set.

of the unheralded players...
…i love me some lawrence dawsey and eg green. i can’t even tell you why i like EG, but i’ve got his jersey. he was just flat out money. as reliable a receiver as anyone who ever played at fsu and he had a nose for the end zone.
Have to say my favorites were
Deion, Greg Jones, and Lawrence Timmons. Also a big fan of Nigel Bradham after sitting next to his mom at the bowl game.
Dawsey, Leroy Butler, Dexter Carter
guys who were all heart and left it all on the field.
Bring back Peter Tom- a true Nole!
yeah on all three
and it was always fun watching william floyd truck someone.
Sebastian Janikowski. To fans of a lot of teams it would seem odd to put a kicker here, but how great was it to not have to worry about kicks during those 3 seasons? I always use the name “38Noles” because of his jersey number.
Terrell Buckley. I’m a little too young to remember Deion as a Nole, so for me TBuck really epitomized that era for FSU. His interception of Elvis Grbac is among my favorite single plays ever.
Greg Jones. Absolutely loved having a power back like that, and I only like him more now that he represents FSU amidst all those Gators the Jaguars always seem to have on the team.
And I’ll always like Chris Rix a lot too. He was the QB when I was in school and I got into so many arguments defending him. The last 8 minutes of the 2003 Georgia Tech game is one of my favorite Doak memories.
Loved the "Polish Powder Keg"
I had the privilege of seeing a soccer ball that he kicked in high school. I kid you not, that ball was warped from the sheer force of the kick. We played his soccer team in Orlando during the state tourney, and man could he kick.
loved the way fsu used to block kicks/punts all the time
Joe Wessel was the man on ST
also loved the slow, small white receiver….Matt Frier
Mr automatic on the GL Dayne Williams
how can anyone forget Greg Allen…oh FSU hasnt had a 1000 yrd rusher in how long? since Warrick Dunn? no wonder…not to mention he played almost 30 yrs ago….
first FSU qb I can remember from my early days of being a NOLE fan Kelly Lowery
+1 on Matt Frier...
I posted this link in an older post but still love it. 72 yard touchdown with The Rock and Bob Marley’s kid in the shot…
sent chills through my body watching that again...was at that game...SEE the CROWD
NOLES need that atmosphere back….Ill be bringing it come September
Snoop
I had a class with Marvin Minnis in 1999 (when he was 3 or 4 on the depth chart). He was a good guy and quite a charecter. He became my favorite player then and it broke my heart when he got jipped on the Belitnikoff and subsiquently suspended for the OU game. Anybody remember his outfit at the ESPN award show?
by BrianFSU on Jul 8, 2010 7:53 PM EDT via mobile reply actions
So many great players
it is hard for me to name one. Marvin “Shadetree” Jones, Warrick Dunn, Derrick Brooks, Greg Jones, Ernie Sims, Andre Wadsworth, Snoop Minnis, Greg Allen. I like players that come to play game in and game out. Too many to choose though.
"We didn't lose the game; we just ran out of time." - Vince Lombardi
It should be noted
that Christian Ponder is slowly making his way onto my list. I’ll be the first to admit I was skeptical coming into the 2009 season after his 13 interception debacle the previous year. I don’t think anyone though can question his heart after the Clemson game and he single handily kept us in so many games last year.
"We didn't lose the game; we just ran out of time." - Vince Lombardi
DAMN! BIG BAD RON.
I was there for the last 2 years of Ron Simmons career, and he was one of the my favorites and one of the greatest Noles ever. He was one of the most dominant NG ever and by the end of his senior year, he was always double teamed, and sometimes all 3 of the interior offense linemen tried to block him, but to no avail. He was always involved in the play and he still had amazing stats despite the constant double teaming.
483=CT, 25=Sck, 44=TFL,19=FF, 8=FR, 4=BK
He is FSU’s first 2-time consensus All-American ever, and he is the latest of the 4 FSU players to be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. .
At the time, one of the songs that we used to crank was by Pat Travers called Boom Boom-(Out go the lights).
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0bZTSUt84YA
One time Big Bad Ron totally annihilated a OB and someone in our group yelled out real loud “Boom Boom,” and as if on cue, everyone in our group replied out loud “Out go the lights.”
This was totally not planned, just a spontaneous reaction by everyone. From then on every time Ron planted a RB or QB, someone would yell “Boom Boom” and the rest would reply accordingly. Soon this spread through the whole student section, and I could swear eventually the whole stadium was in on it. At least so it seemed at the time. But this I do know for sure, toward the end of the year even the scoreboard got in on the action and light up with ’Boom Boom" a few times\ during a big hit. We felt like we had made it big time.

Willie Reid
Willie Reid is one of my favorites. His returns in the ACC champ against VT were unbelievable and in a huge game where no one gave FSU a chance. Still one of my all time favorite games I’ve attended in person and he was the man that game.

willie was the man
and he was king for a day that game. everyone thought we were done by double digits… i remember counting scores in the fourth quarter with my dad and thinking we only need one more stop……. and man did they wait to get it.
i do enjoy how people are showing their age in this thread.
to that end Leon was one of my all-time favorites to watch. I dont remember the year, but the Gator Bowl game against WVU, where JB called his favorite play on the first play from scrimmage, the exchange with my buddy at the beach house went something like this:
Him “What do you think we are going to do here?”
Me “Ill tell you what we will do… There is no doubt we will come out and play-action deep. It wont work since the other team has seen it coming for two weeks.”
Him “You think?”
Me “They should just hand the damn ball off to Leon because he is the best damn player on the field”
Sure enough we came out under center, play action 50 yard down the middle of the field (I was thinking sidelines). And on the next play Leon took it 80yards to the house. Instantly Ive got about a dozen “not so fan, fans” (to be polite) raving about how great I am and all I can do is scream at the TV cursing JB’s every move. So predictable.
before i get slammed here...
i in no-way thought he was scoring on the play… but FSU could not hand the ball enough that year. like watching a train wreck.
^^^^^^^^
If I didn’t attend FSU from 20033-2007, TN is probably not around. Both because of the internet age, and because my football experience would have been better. It was as if I had grown up with great ‘Nole football, but when I got to FSU, poof, it’s gone.

much agreed
i watched the demise from hogtown 2000-2007 and it was awful… stupid advanced degrees.
ok i had to look it up
it was 2005 and 69 yards.
Leon
Was awesome too. I love how he’s had such a great pro career as well, great Nole.
by crmnole on Jul 8, 2010 8:44 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
this isnt the place for it
but ive been reminded of the frustration that was 2005 and too many other years around it.
“Washington went 69 yards down the right sideline on the game’s second play for the longest TD run in Gator Bowl history. He had 135 yards by halftime and had only 12 carries for the game, or else he might have challenged the Gator Bowl record of 216 yards by Syracuse’s Floyd Little against Tennessee in 1966.”
meanwhile…
“Rix fumbled three times and threw two interceptions, one of which led to a touchdown. So at halftime, Bowden thought about replacing Rix.”

i wrote about that game in detail in a previous article
The nadir of my FSU football experience.
Looking back, it’s pathetic how electric our stadium was….all because of a skinny little cornerback on blocked place kicks. We did nothing right that game.

My favortite memory of Leon
was watching him waltz into the endzone in the second overtime to beat NCST one play after Cro Thorpe broke his leg.
Wadsworth and Weinke...
Wadsworth made the move to defensive end for my freshman year (97) and he was absolutely a beast. A play that stands out for me was in the Sugar Bowl against Ohio State when he leaped over their tackle completely horizontal and took out their QB. Wish his pro career had gone a little better. And then Weinke… how do you not love the guy especially after coming back from that neck injury.
Without doubt, Ponder is my favorite ever...
Great teams have great players. He’s stood out in a decade of mediocrity…hard to say how he’d fit in amongst the great players of the 1990’s. Doesn’t matter to me.
In no particular order
-Amp Lee…pride of Chipley, FL. Damn he was good.
-Clifton Abraham…5’9 and 170lbs of wet blanket coverage
-Thad Busby…was my next door neighbor growing up. Great guy…a bit inconsistently mediocre, but got the job done. Probably shoulda played baseball
-Dulack Guerrier and Vanez Gooch baddest ass names ever
-Cory Sawyer…another solid CB
-Samari Rolle
I heart Cardullo...in the same way I heart the World Cup, Fat Girls, and Okra.

I do not believe that Ponder would measure up very well against Wienke, Ward, Kanell or even Brad Johnson.
I do agree that he has stood out because of a decade of mediocrity.
Brad Johnson didn't do much at FSU
Ponder plays in a different era. I think he would have measured up, but likely not surpassed those others… yet.
Why leave Busby out of this? Two seasons, two losses, one was insanely close (and wouldn’t have happened if Samari had a clue) and the other should have never happened.
Shot a Gator in Jean Shorts just to watch him die.
Agreed
Busby kept the well-oiled machine running. You know, cuz it was still a Benz-o back in those days.

Yeah, Thad did a great job I thought.
Some say it was just the talent around him that made him that good, but I disagree. He was the Gatorade Player of the Year from Florida and an AP and USA Today first-team All American coming out of high school (MY high school, which might explain my bias a bit ;). Busby might have washed out completely in the pros, but he was a great college QB, much like Weinke, or Eric Crouch, or [insert dozens of names here].
Incidentally, one of my favorite FSU moments came at the only game I’ve ever been able to attend in person, at home vs USM in 1996. I had already accepted a full music scholarship at USM for the next year, so some other seniors who were going to USM and were also FSU fans and I went to the game. What made it even better was this was Thad Busby, from Pace High School, at QB for FSU, vs Lee Roberts, from Pace High School, at QB for USM. Roberts had a scholarship offer from Bobby to come play at FSU, but he didn’t want to be sitting one year behind Thad again like he did in high school. So here’s a bunch of Pace High kids, FSU fans but future USM alumni, and two of our school’s best players ever produced are slinging it around on the field at Doak Campbell. I remember pissing off a bunch of drunk idiots who were screaming for Kendra to replace Busby, almost got them tossed out too hehe
What’s that? Oh, the game? 17-14 FSU at the half, great first half of football. If I remember rightly, it ended 54-14. Ouch lol.
Based on what?
Ponder’s season last year measures favorably with any QB in FSU history and he did it with worse talent. Imagine if he had Dunn or Warrick on the field with him.

Charlie Ward
Not exactly a unique pick but when I first saw him in the 93 Orange Bowl against Nebraska the year before FSU won the national championship I had never seen anything like him and all these years later I still haven’t. Charlie was exceptional in every way and I was never nervous during a game when Charlie was there. He doesn’t get near the recognition he deserves from the “worldwide leader” for being one of the greatest college football players of all time. This week Heather Dinich even had the audacity to compare Russell Wilson favorably to Charlie! But for me, he’s still top Nole!
I concur
Charlie was something behold. He moved like a point guard on a football field. Everything he did seemed completely effortless.

I was at that game
and Anquan became my favorite Nole that day. He was our best receiver and best QB that game and if it wasnt for Gardner (?) dropping that perfectly placed pass from Boldin near the endzone we might just have won it. We were missing Greg Jones, Maddox, Darnell Docket, Bunkley, McPhereson had been kicked from the team earlier that year and Boldin put the team on his back and almost succeeded.
Great to see him in Baltimore where he has a better chance to win a SB now that Kurt is gone from AZ.
Bring back Peter Tom Willis— a true Nole! -FiestaNole
I was there too!
We sat front row in the endzone. We painted a sheet that said
Fabian
Save
Us
and hung it over the edge. It got us on sportscenter.
Warrick Dunn, Leon Washington, janikowski and Leroy Butler stick out the most to me.
Warrick Dunn, first because the enormous respect I have for what he had gone through, the example he leads by, and the awesome plays he made. Choke at doak, ’94 title game, etc. etc. etc.
Leon Washington, because he seemed to be just busting through seems and I thought was pretty reliable in the dark days of our inept offense. Plus he has a super nasty injury caught on tape where he was fielding, in think it was a punt, and he hyper expended his elbow. He still produced after that I forgot how long after.
Janikowski, he was the man kicking it into the endoze or through the uprights… plus he put it through the uprights to gain 3 points over clemson iin 1999 – closest game of the season.
Leroy Butler, puntrooskie
Grace I call Your name, Oh won’t Your smile fall over me, I’m cracked and dry on hands and knees, Oh sweet grace rain down on me I need You grace

I love the highlight of him taking the UNC player’s head off, but this to me is the essence of Greg Jones, and one of my favorite FSU highlights ever.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=222zdriNuq4&feature=player_embedded
thats one of my favorite plays ever
probably my favorite play from the time I attended FSU (2001 – 2005). Greg was a man amongst boys and if it wasn’t for injuries he would have easily eclipsed 1000 yards his junior season.
Bring back Peter Tom Willis— a true Nole! -FiestaNole
EG Green, Corey Simon and Tommy Polley
Those were my boys. EG would catch anything near him and the other two would blow you up.
Simon, Wadworth, and P. Warrick
Simon and Wadsworth were so dominant and changed the game. Warrick was just fun to watch.
Can I be on Team Gold??
Marvin Jones- hands down
The man was an animal in the middle. Should have won the Heisman in my opinion but it went to …… Gino Toretta……
Leroy Butler would be a close second. I remember like it was yesterday sitting in the end zone at Clemson watching him run toward me on the puntrooskie. My freshman year 1988. Remember back when Bowden actually still coached and did it well.

Besides the obvious choices, Ward, Dunn, Brooks, Sanders, Warrick, Weinke, Minnis....
God, there were so many! If I had to choose my favorites though, other than the ones above, it would be:
A) Cro. Thorpe – I mean, could you ask for a classier guy? The billboard was ridiculous!
2) Jared Hetzel – He was mostly on kick off coverage, but man was he in on every tackle! And as a walk on no less. Kid had true heart.
I guess I just really love the guys that show up every down and play. No need for showboating!

Sweet I was there 89-94
those were the days cdnole.
"We didn't lose the game; we just ran out of time." - Vince Lombardi
Looking back....those who were there then to see all that talent were
some lucky sobs…Im ready for the new era to begin, and am having a hard time backing away from the koolaid..hopefully I wont have to go cold turkey after the season starts..
cdnole...I was there about the same time (88-90)
I worked for Seminole Uprising…I got to know many of those guys pretty well. It was a great time to be in Tally.
Gripper
no kidding
with all the satellite trucks coming in on sun/mon before the big sat games….the anticipation of the Miami and uF games was palpable all week….party all week!!
I was there during the exact same time as well.
Gator Gig at the Phurst, beating the drum at the union, the spirit spear, rickitey old Doak… was there a better time for Seminole football, heck Seminole sports? I hope there is to come.
peter warrick all day
i was about 10 at the time of PW’s time at fsu, and he was my michael jordan, i idolized peter. I’m also a Ernie Sims fan. I think its pretty amazing that come 10 years from now this current team may hold a couple nole greats, ponder, hudson, bradham, reid?
"theres two types of people in this world, those who CARRY a spear and those who FEAR the spear"-James Coley
Where's the love for Leon Fowler?
Have to go with the obvious picks
Warrick Dunn, Charlie Ward, Derrick Brooks, Marvin Jones, Peter Warrick, Sebastian Janikowski, T-Buck, Lawrence Dawsey, P.T. Willis, Clifton Abraham, Cookie Thomas, Tay Cody.
A few less obvious picks:
Snoop Minnis: Interviewed him several times, great sense of humor, very down-to-earth. Just good people. Also good at football.
Daryl Bush: Great on the field and in the classroom.
Jerry Johnson: Funniest dude ever. And damn good.
Jason Whitaker: See above.
Jeff Chaney: Toughest dude ever. Still believe we would have beaten Oklahoma if he had been healthy.
Lonnie Johnson: Tight ends, we used to throw it to them. In the discussion for best TE at FSU.
Connell Spain: Very energetic and very good.
P Dub, Charlie Ward, Warrick Dunn, Chris Weinke (offense), Samari Rolle, Jamal Reynolds, Corey Simon, Ernie Sims, Derrick Brooks, and of course Deion
Need I say anything about Peter Warrick, Charlie Ward, Chris Weinke, and Warrick Dunn? Just the best 2 eva do it on offense at FSU. Reynolds and Simon were monsters on the D-Line. Derrick Brooks is a legend, Ernie Sims was a freak at LB and Samari Rolle and Deion were lockdown corners.
Seminole swag ain't a gimmick.....it's a lifestyle
it's an unreal competition between the Warricks.
Charlie is slightly overtaken since his brilliance only last for about 21/22 games.
I don’t have defensive players in the top 3 since their bodies of work aren’t as expansive as the Warricks. Derrick Brooks was naturally overshadowed by Marvin Jones his first 2 years, and subsequently Marvin left early with no rings.
Forced to decide, I have to pick Dunn. His career in garnet and gold seemed like an NFL tenure. There’s almost 20 minutes of Youtube highlights of #28. The Peter Youtube video (fairly recent) is equally impressive.
Both of them stepped up on the grandest of stages, arguably the MVP’s for over half of FSU’s Top 10-15 most significant games of my lifetime.
I was sitting 10 rows up near midfield when Ward flipped the pass to Dunn for a 78-yard dagger in ‘93. As mentioned by many others, the moments directly preceding that play were louder than standing next to a jet engine.
Rix-to-Sam was more timely, but the historical significance of Dunn’s catch-and-run rank near the top. An underrated and more athletic play was Dunn’s 80-yard Orange Bowl deflating juke in ‘96. We hadn’t won in Miami in a loonnnng time and play is vastly underrated.
- has the unshakable reputation as an exemplary humanitarian, but he wasn’t a “flip the ball back to the ref” scorer by any means. He’s simply done so much for others and been an incredible role model that he’s been typecast for 17 years. Go back and watch said Youtube highlights. He’d be penalized in 2010 for excessive celebration.
I ran out of time to laud Peter Warrick. I’ll just say this. He finishes 1 centimeter behind the greatest, most sensational, most breathtaking, most electrifying, most clutch Nole of all-time. Shouldn’t have gone to Dillards that day and maybe Dunn is 1 centimeter behind Peter.

odd formatting glitch towards the end there.
And I failed to adequately note the 78-yard pass was in Gainesville against the Gators. Oops.

Question
If Warrick had won the 99 Heisman, would Weinke have won the 00? Would there have been a bias against giving it to players from the same school in back-to-back years?
How about the rooster?
Outzen wasn’t great and didn’t do too much – but had some great moments. One of my favorite was in the 1999 Sugar Bowl against VT. They had all the momentum and up by one. We were facing 4th and 1 at around midfield. We bring Outzen in because he always does the QB sneak on those kind of plays. Instead, great call and Outzen swings a pitch to Travis MInor for 15 yards plus a facemask penalty. We cruised from there. We totally caught them off guard.
Hung out with the Rooster in Jax when he played for AFL-2 team
Cool guy. Not a good QB.

Danny McManus
The QB at the start of the dynasty. A couple years earlier, I think he was the QB in the 17-13 upset of Nebraska in Lincoln – and then in the 31-28 win over them in the Fiesta Bowl (after the 87 season). What was that last TD, 4th and Goal from the 15 (and we only had a shot because of a late goal line fumble on the opposite side of the field a couple minutes earlier?). That Fiesta Bowl was a great game.
Absolutely! My favorite.
He was a leader of some awesome guys at one of my favorite times in Seminole football. He was so real. Most interviews that I saw were with him drinking a Coors Light at the Phyrst. I had total confidence that he could do whatever we needed to win. I was at FSU during that time and we looked a lot alike. I was able to convince some of the ladies that I was him and use that to my advantage.
My two favorites, Greg Jones and Javon Walker.
Greg was the RB my first few years in Tallahassee. I was in the stands at UNC for his complete de-uniforming of the UNC safety.
Walker was a senior my freshman year. I was in the band and spoke with him a few times on the sideline before halftime. Very classy dude and nice guy.
One last guy: Castillo. He was a guy who when I first laid eyes on him looked like the epitome of dumb jock but was actually one of the brightest dudes on the team. Watching him carry they Gator head to spark that brawl was pretty funny
Castillo and I
were Physics lab partners. Incredibly nice guy, and very bright. He’s in med school at FSU, and I think he is about to graduate now.
Javon Walker always goes under the radar
but I was a Freshman his senior year also and he made Rix look good several times that year. Sucks that he got greedy and left Green Bay, him and Favre together were great to watch, I remember that game after Favre’s dad passed away that Javon caught 2 TDs with people all over him in the endzone.
Bring back Peter Tom Willis— a true Nole! -FiestaNole
My Fav's will always be
Warrick Dunn: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6SyEl4uPn6Q
He bleeds Garnet and Gold, She bleeds Crimson and White. AND THEY BOTH HATE ORANGE! GO NOLES!! ROLL TIDE!!
Amp Lee
By far my favorite RB of all time and one of my favorite Noles of all time. I loved to watch him run. It was so effortless. He had this little “lane shift” I called it that just allowed him to move right past people at full speed. It wasn’t the same dead leg move that P. Warrick used so well, it was more of a shift.
My dad’s best friend that has sat in front of us for years is a fairly quiet fella (most people are compared to my dad) but he used to always get really excited when Amp carried the ball. I can here him now in his south Ga. drawl say, “Go Amp!” every time he touched it. So many great memories in that stadium, but that is one of my favorites.
Darryl Bush and Tommy Polley
I don’t know how he did it, but I swear to God that Tommy Polley was in on every tackle our defense made during his entire career.
Polley
I remember trying to get to our seats one game and we got caught in the hall when the players come out and they swing that gate. We (Lively and I) are standing next to Tommy Polley as the team is jumping around getting hyped before running out on the field. By the time we get to our seats we miss kick-off and we sit for the first play. Tommy Polley crushes a guy, picks up the fumble and scores. We go crazy because 4 minutes earlier we were yelling at him to crush someone.
Bring Back PT Willis -------> A True Nole!!!
The Devin Bush moment is my favorite too.
I was at that game with a season ticket holding Family member.
I was a teenager and there with my cousin and best friend, as well.
The great part is before the game we were walking around under the stadium from one side to the other and Devin was actually late going out on the field from the locker room. The privacy gates were opened back up by then and we actually walked right by him! Then he made the play of the game later and made our day in doing so.
Giddy-up!
Peter Warrick
Assisted greatly in converting me from a lifelong UM fan to a Nole during my time in law school in Tally.
I didn't become a true fan until I attended FSU in 2001
so some of the great Noles like Deion, Brooks, Dunn, Warrick, Weinkie, Simmons, Boulware, and so on and so on were before I truly enjoyed CFB.
But Deion and Warrick Dunn both provided great moments in a Falcons uniform too and are my 2 favorite American athletes of all times (I say that because I am from Brazil). Dunn is just a class act through and through and was a great NFL running back at only 180lbs.
But some of my favorite noles that I got to watch while in school were:
Greg Jones: UNC beheading, carrying the whole Clemson team into the endzone were great but when he trucked Seam Taylor (RIP) and then starred down at him while jumping over him was just unbelievable.
Anquan Boldin: Guy was and still is a beast. That Sugar Bowl vs Georgia was unbelievable, even though we lost this guy almost won it single handed.
Javon Walker: Just seemed to always come down with the ball
Kendyll Pope and Michael Boulware were always great to watch on defense.
Darnel Docket, Wimbley, Chauncey Davis, Bunkley, and Everette Brown always seemed to be making plays in backfield.
and finally Korey Mangum because of his awful display last year along with the rest of our Defense I have hopes for a much greater improvement than anyone has seen in CFB before.
Bring back Peter Tom Willis— a true Nole! -FiestaNole
I always loved Greg Jones.
That play against UNC is my favorite play of all time. Peter Warrick was another one of my favorites as well.
Dexter Reid
I was having my rehearsal dinner for my wedding and it was my birthday. All my friends were at Friday’s Front Row in Orlando. What a great day/play.
Bring Back PT Willis -------> A True Nole!!!
Kez McCorvey
He was my original favorite FSU player. When I was a kid I looked for #88 on every pass play. He always seemed to make a catch when we needed one.
Other favorites:
-Leon Washington for being great and sticking around for his senior season even though he was criminally underused.
-Ron Duggans for being the dependable ‘hands’ receiver to Warrick’s flash.
-LeRoy Butler…“The Butler did it!” and his class once he went to the pros.
-Warrick Dunn for any and all reasons above.
-Peter Boulware, Marvin Jones, Devin Bush, Dexter Jackson for big hits.
Strange things are afoot at the Circle-K.
Oh and Greg Jones for being a beast and just trucking everyone.
Strange things are afoot at the Circle-K.
Kez
Love that you mentioned Kez. He was unbelievably clutch.

Another one that I can't believe no one else has said.... Graham Gano!
He practically single handedly saved the 08 season. And that streak from over 50 (and the 69 yarder!), and those punts in the Champs Sports Bowl…. Wow. The stuff of legend!
Mike Martin should go coach Hawaii. Then he could have all the poi's he ever wanted - MattDNole
He was amazing
Funny how the “wide right” stuff didn’t really seem to hover in the air his last year.
My favs that aren't the obvious
1. Tommy Polley
2. Samari Rolle
3. Ryan Sprague (because he dropped the peoples elbow on the ball at the spring game)
4. Rock Preston
5. Dexter Jackson (4INT’s in one game?? That’s Marshall McDougal territory)
Bring Back PT Willis -------> A True Nole!!!
Coooop
I went to HS with Andre Cooper and was a frosh his Sr Year. We had 3 D-1 players: Cooper, Rahim Abdullah who went to Clemson and Jeremy Hyatt who played b-ball at NC ST. I got thrown in the pool off the high dive just about every day during summer two-a-days. Good times.
Coop and Greg Jones were my favorites, along with name your back up scat-back (Ford/ChaneyPreston/Feester/Maddox)

Fletcher?
I remember a basketball game Boone (my alma mater) vs Fletcher and Jeremy Hyatt got his teeth knocked out.

Yep, Fletcher
State finals two years in a row against Miami Sr, who had a rediculous lineup including Doug Edwards’ brother Allen that ended up at Kentucky. Coop lost State POY to fellow Jax playa and Nole, James Collins

Derrick Brooks gotta be my all-time favorite
Nole and a Buc.
I’ll always love Ward and Weinke, when Warrick was going he was the tits for me. Oddly enough (and I’ve taken considerable flack over the years for it so I expect this to be no different) one of my favorite Noles of all time is Rix. He had such amazing athletic ability, the guy just oozed talent and could make any throw on the field. I look back and I’m kind of amazed at how many games we won running a high school offense with him (granted a lot of that was due to superior skill at many positions). Will always remember the UF game in ’03 and ’02. His bowl performances were always good (when he was allowed to play in them) and his hook ups with Cro, P.K. and (in his freshman year) were always bad ass to watch.
Shot a Gator in Jean Shorts just to watch him die.
Late to the party but going with the lesser known al heart guys
A. Daryl Bush
2. Brian Allen
D. Victor…not William, Floyd
I attended from 93 - 94
A couple of alright players that you guys forgot. Walter Jones and Tra Thomas turned out to be pretty good. I remember leaving my house on Prince St., running into the Nature Boy Ric Flair on my way to the Doak. When I was headed to my seat I looked over and Thomas’ helmet looked like it was floating on top of the rest of the team’s. I think he was 6’8. This thread was a great read, thanks!

I'm so upset I missed this post somehow
I want to add the Boulwares… haven’t seen them thrown in the convo.
