Reserve defensive tackle Moses McCray and Reserve running back Tavares Pressley are done for the year with torn ACLs.
Both were non-contact injuries. "Neither guy was hit, neither one had a guy around him, just stuck their foot in the ground and it went," Fisher said of the injuries. "It's unfortunate, very unfortunate. They're both great kids."
Pressley was a 5th stringer and is not a loss. His career at FSU has been quite tragic, as this is his second torn ACL in three seasons. Nole fans will be rooting for Pressley to get his degree.
McCray, however, is a loss. Moses was expected to be the backup to Everett Dawkins at defensive tackle, along with Demonte McAllister. This hurts the 'Noles depth and is not good news for a defensive line that was not particularly deep at the position. McCray has now suffered a torn ACL, a hip injury, a dislocated elbow, and another knee injury. One has to ask whether McCray will ever be healthy. I would expect him to redshirt. FSU fans now see how important it was for Dawkins and McAllister to bulk up this off-season, which they did.
We'll have some analysis on this tomorrow, but this injury underscores the lack of DT recruiting and development in 06, 07, and 08 (players who would be redshirt seniors, seniors, and juniors). FSU doesn't have a single upperclassman at DT.

Awesome.
I have a friend who went out in a blaze of glory at Applebee’s. He soaked his manager’s head with an entire carafe of creamy italian dressing in the middle of the restaurant.
That's just immature.
I know people get fed up with jobs, but in no scenario is that appropriate.
I’m not sure what the laws in that state are, but if I were said manager, I’d make it a nightmare for him to get a job within 30 miles of that town.

It’s not all about effort. It’s about ability to contribute and the need for scholarships elsewhere. This is a business and allowing TP to come back is a bad business decision.

Absolutely
That’s why these guys don’t get paid, their #1 job coming out of high school is to make their agents rich. Their agents in this case being whatever particular institution has acquired their services, usually through $40,000+ worth of scholarships and a promise of a free ticket into the league.

If he still gets to go to school
What is the point of him being on the team? Even if he stayed healthy he wouldn’t get much burn or have a high level of play one season after another knee surgery.

Frank Gore was productive after multiple injuries.
I’ve had a few (3) ACLs myself. The adage about some knees coming back stronger than previous is true in some cases; don’t see what it would hurt to leave it out there as an option. (Presumably he could contribute more than one of the walk-on RBs, regardless of whether he returns at full speed.)
If we’re worried about saving money on the scholarship (going with 84) vs. reserving for another player, then I disagree philosophically.
Not about the money. It's about how needing the room.
Pressley should be graduating this year. He’s had his 3 years and came with an AA. If not, tough luck.

Hate to push this issue because it's a small storyline,
but how many schollie’s are we using right now? Certainly not 85, considering Carr (soon), Fortson, Jacobs, DJJ, and possibly others?
Unless you go Lester/LSU and WAAAYYYYY oversign, there are inevitably scholarships left over. I would just favor using one on a guy that’s bled a little (literally) for the program than kicking him to the curb and giving it to a walk-on. And I say this as a former walk-on at FSU — I just think it’s somewhat of an injustice to throw him out when scholarships are almost inevitably available. If we truly use 85 as of August next year, then he should understand… but if not, let him get started on a Master’s and create some goodwill for the program through him and everyone he’s connected with.
I believe the plan is to go full 85 and believe FSU will take 25 or 26 guys

Arrdub's point is well-taken
But he’s hardly being thrown out. He’s been put in a position to complete his undergraduate education, which is the end-game for the vast majority of college athletes. It’s not like the program is limiting his pro prospects by advising him to move on; his unfortunate injuries have done that. Otherwise, he could enter the draft anyways. It’s not really fair to the team or to TP to keep him around on schollie just to bury him at 6 or 7 on the depth chart. I’m sure there are lots of athletes (and head coaches) that would love to stick around for just one more year and try and realize untapped potential, but it often doesn’t work that way.
Don’t mean to sound callous, because it is sad, but that’s the reality. If he really wants to stick around (not sure if he does), then presumably he could be a walk-on or even take some kind of staff role (which would help on the goodwill end).
Was Gore productive the season immediately following surgery?
Serious question bc I can’t remember if he had a year to get himself together.

Because he considers dogfighting “not a big deal”

It was a bad business decision to take him over Blount
Yeah, I know Blount had his issue. But in my mind, there was never a comparison between the two. I wanted the guy from down the road.
How ironic that FSU got the guy to come east from California and Oregon got a guy to go all the way out west from North Florida.
I feel for Pressley. But I was never knocked out. And that was pre-injury.
Don't recall the specifics
But I thought Blount passed on us as opposed to the other way around. Am I misremembering? Apologies if so.
Yeah, but only if his sucker punch was directed at Timmy.
Otherwise, I strongly disagree, we wouldn’t have wanted ANY PART OF THE ESPN HEADLINES that Blount appeared to be destined to create.
There were no "warning signs" that I'm aware of on Blount pre-punch
I’ve known his family for nearly 40 years and there was nothing there to suggest he would do what he did, that I’m aware of.
I suspect that if we had stayed after him, he would have been a Nole. I don’t know that. But I suspect it.
No familiarity with the situation personally.
I gathered from what others said there were red flags…?
But if we’re talking about circumstances as they were, we didn’t know TP would blow up multiple knees upon enrollment, either.
All hindsight relative to both players.
I was a bigger fan of Blount, pre-injury
LaGarrette is bigger, stronger, more physical.
I thought that was more what we needed at the time. A pounder, especially on the goal line.
I would have loved to have given him the ball at the end of the 2008 Ga Tech game, for example.
in all fairness
Marcus Sims had it… then he didn’t… :)
not excusing the action
But that wasn’t a “sucker punch”. Boise doucher initiated contact and talked smacked to an obviously volatile Blount. He earned his shiner.

Boise Boy is NEVER going to live that one down
He could go on to win 3-4 super bowl titles and when someone goes up to him the first question….“Hey aren’t you that dude that got knocked out on National TV?” Lol. Blount should not have thrown a punch, but boy if you are going to make it count!
Team GOLD
Totally deserved it.
Wasn’t he looking right at Blount anyway? A sucker punch is when you get knocked the f out like this guy:
OK, please excuse the "sucker punch" phraseology.
I will call it an “idiot punch,” because it was both directed at an idiot who was talking smack, as well as delivered by an idiot — due to his lack of concern for his own personal well-being, his team’s well being, and the image of his university in comparison to gratifying his desire to lash out.
If everyone that had to endure smack talk from a punk ended up swinging, there wouldn’t be a whole lot of players left on the field.
Idiot punch.......classic

Well, you make a strong argument
But in my opinion its all about accountability. It’s impressive to see people use restraint when faced with taunts such as that, but when it finally does happen – how can you really say it wasn’t deserved?
The Boise guy said it to invoke an emotional response.
He got one.
'Gentlemen, it is better to have died a small boy than to fumble this football.' John Heisman
'I'm not a Role Model" - Charles Barkley
The Boise guy walked off with a "W," while the Oregon guy walked away with an "L," and heaped a double load of shame on himself, to boot.
Maybe if Blount and his teammates showed a little more discipline their team would have won the ballgame. In fact, I think I can say with certainty that character is the ONLY reason Oregon should ever lose a game to Boise. (The kind of character that goes into making individual sacrifices for the greater good.)
And, to clarify, I root heavily against teams like Boise in any game like this.
If they didn't 230+ lb back running laterally IN the endzone maybe they would've
been ok.
......and let the paramedics sort 'em out!
Blount was from where, Perry?
But Pressley is from Arcadia, I believe. He just played juco in Cali. And I don’t think we chose him over Blount. We wanted both. Blount just wanted immediate and guaranteed playing time and we couldn’t offer either.

I think Stoops would go multiple (3-4, etc.) before having to play an OL in a 4-3 base
FSU Defense 2010: Taking back 1st down.
Situationally I'm guessing that would be a better option.
Unless it was someone who was a big-time HS D-lineman who switched over. Hate to see a mental lapse cost us a game or something.
Interesting
Could this be better for us considering the LBs are the strength of our D?

I wouldn't say "better"
because that implies that Stoops would not play the optimal configuration(s) already.
FSU Defense 2010: Taking back 1st down.
You're right. I didn't word it properly.
Does the loss of McCray make 3-4 the best formation for us considering the strength of our LB corps? I know he was going to be multiple but is this injury significant enough to alter our preferred scheme?

If your best 7 players has 4 LBs

LB's don't dictate success or failure of the 3-4 Defense.....your NT does.
If you do not have a NT that DEMANDS a double-team on every single snap….then you cannot play 3-4.
3-4 defenses also have natural bubbles vs. the interior run.
Oderint Dum Metuant
Also think of leverage. Hide the less effective bodies at DT in lower leverage snaps.
Tomahawknation.com
hahaha!
I’m guessing you’re referring to snaps in which are less important to the outcome of the game, or against certain types of formations/down and distance in which having supersonic DT’s is not a focal point?
Formerly known as Randall W. Spetman
both sort of
there are 1600 DT snaps to account for. Not each is created equal.
When we are up by 28 on Samford or Wake the snaps are not as meaningful as when we are tied with UF.
Also in the course of the game we can slide guys like Cummings in a little more in passing situations, 3rd and longs etc.

I would hope that coaches in public would take the “no comment” route on players and their abilities in public. Not to mention that Pressley was recruited while Coach Fisher was here, so to take a shot at him would be to take a shot at Coach Fisher’s ability to evaluate, seems to me.
He’s contributed right around as much as I personally expected. And even got in the USF game last year at a point in time when I wouldn’t have wanted him carrying the football.
He’s getting three years of room, board and education out of us. I think he’s done quite well for himself, all things considered.

the free knee surguries he had as a scholarship athlete as well. All is all, despite the shortcomings of his football career, a free education, room, board, and medical attention is a pretty good deal for a young man. Im sorry to see him have such bad luck. Best of luck to him in the future.
You can't count the "free" surgeries.
If he wasn’t playing ball at FSU he wouldn’t have needed the surgeries.

generic praise would be something like ‘hard worker’ or ‘great sense of humor and likes to dance’..
being the fastest rb is kinda specific and rather a big deal..
Yes, but "fastest" & out of position doesn't mean much....
….Except it gives you the opportunity to show that speed by spectacularly run down C.J. Spiller or Chris Rainey from behind after 60+ yard runs.

And I dont have a kid, am not married, and am not engaged to be married…
Team GOLD
Seems like Dan Kendra could change positions again--
I think he might have another year, and no real injury risk.

Not really
I’d say there’s extreme risk of injury if you get him near a bunson burner

I’m sure there are plenty of walk-ons available. They make better D-line starters anyways.

This team will improve in '10... on its 16-16 conference record over the last 4 years.... after losing 20 games in the last 4 years... after having the 7th worst major-conference defense... after not even winning its own division in the ACC in the last 4.

And after some time in Viloria’s S&T program ya just never know.
......and let the paramedics sort 'em out!
DT depth chart
Something like this?
At NG- Jacobbi, McCloud
At DT- Dawkins, McCallister, Cummings
Still projects to be a big improvement over last year.
That's what I have it at.

Think he has to
Can’t really assume the rest of the DTs will make it through the season with no time-loss injuries. Just hope there are no more severe ones.
Fair enough-
Put Erving in @ 3rd string NG, but as far as rotation goes, I’m thinking that Cummings sees 2x-3xs the number of snaps, barring further injuries.
Erving is a beats for a freshy! I think he will be good. Just raw & needs some coaching
GO NOLES!!! SCALP EM!
I gotcha, and I don't really disagree with you
I like his potential a lot.
But without this injury, I’m pretty confident he would have redshirted. I just think that the extra snaps that are available will in all likelihood be mostly absorbed by the 5 players I mentioned.
This is a good point.
This defense wasn’t going to be world beaters anyways. Getting a super young DT some extra snaps against quality OL may be very good for his development. We simply don’t know.

Thinking about RB depth. Is Ty Jones still with us? Haven't heard much about him
GO NOLES!!! SCALP EM!
Snaps
Jmac 490
McCloud 290
Erving 20
Dawkins 400
McAllister 280
Cummings 120

Any of McDaniel, Dawkins, or McCloud hurts pretty bad.
Still feel good about that rotation but will be walking on thin ice.
3 deep should be enough,
especially since the cross- training approach will assure that the best 2 guys available are on the field.

Might see crossing/sliding of positions a little to account for leverage of down. See a little 3 Lineman as well.

Anyone know anything
about that Joshua Rodriguez guy? Is he on scholarship? Or just a long lasting walk on? Listed as a RS junior at 6’0" 297 lbs. I’m sure we would have heard something from the coaches about him if he was any good but I wonder if he is decent enough to play a few snaps a game.

Now, if he didn't have a bio, I would have thought you was playing
At Florida State: Will lend depth and experience to the Seminoles’ defensive line as a sophomore…one of the hardest working players on the team who pushed the veterans for playing time during his first year as a Seminole.
I say put him out there…..
FEAR THE SPEAR!!!!!!!!!
I did manage to find that
I’m just guessing he lacks any quality talent. But if we HAVE to have a guy in for a 4 or 5 plays a game. Then so be it. Really looks like a guy that would be perfect for blow out time.

I'm wit you on this one......Seriously
Freshman Season (2008): Earned playing time for the first time in his career at the defensive tackle position against Western Carolina and Chattanooga….played in two games during the season.
It may be a couple more that can be used for mop up duty…..for different positions(where there are depth issues)

Let us not forget
That he was under Mickey. Even though his position coach is still O’Dell, perhaps he’s developed a little bit with some help around him.

Im kinda confused......
Seem like coaches know when some recruits might not make it in, well before registering for school, but some like DJJ go through the whole process of recruiting. Then it’s comes time to report to school, then the sh1t hits the fan.
Do College coaches have any access to transcripts, test scores, or any thing else needed to start school or they just go by what the recruit tells them?

I was thinking about that too

I hate these fluke
Non-contact injuries. We have professional S&G in place, good coaches, but still luck seems to rear its head and prove everything cannot be controlled.
I was hoping McCray would be the monster he could not be last year due to his arm.
Substitution infraction
Do you think anyone would notice if we dressed Odell Haggins in McCray’s uniform and lined him up?
I did see he had it wrapped up
wonder what he did.

Take one for the team!
I’d be willing to sacrifice Odell for the greater good of the team. Hell, he could just flop that big body down and plug up most of the line of scrimmage. If he further injures his knee, he can coach from a wheelchair.
I kind of figured Moses tore his acl.
This sucks for both guys. It hurts our team more at the DT position but I really feel for Tavares.
Fisher remains optimistic.
This is probably worthy of its own fanpost, but it’s on-point for this discussion.
Rising Up! Youngsters like McAllister, Smith and Haulstead are making the climb.
“Demonte is coming on very well,” said Fisher. “[Freshmen] Cam Erving and Darious Cummings – those guys are going to be good players. Darious is really physical inside. He’s 290 pounds with a great body. Plus you’ve got the top three guys – Jacobbi (McDaniel), Amp (McCloud) and Everett (Dawkins) – and Demonte is coming on.”
I feel really bad for TP
-Qualification delays
-2 Major ACL tears
-His ONLY college highlight is getting destroyed, knocked basically unconcious, and losing a fumble in our own territory.
WAR PAINT OF TN
"McCray has now suffered a torn ACL, a hip injury, a dislocated elbow, and another knee injury."
Ugly list, career over? Seems like it would be tougher for such a big guy to rehab constantly. Good luck to the big man.
And a heart issue and perhaps a shoulder.

You know this sucks but there might be a bright idea from this. Seeing as we are better stocked at the LB area what do you think about us running more a 3-4 look for the most part.
Why is the sky blue? Because, God Loves the Infantry
There's a discussion about this already, earlier in the comments.
I think it would take too long to implement, not enough practive time. Also, mentioned above is the NT position, good points made.
I don't know why he is out
Burt Fisher said it wasn’t serious, and it’s just pre-cautionary reasons…..can’t remember if he said anything about when he would be back….
