2011 Recruiting Discussion Thread #8 [CLOSED]

Welcome to the recruiting discussion thread.  Please refer to the Recruiting Board for information on prospects.  We are asking readers comment here instead of the recruiting board so that the recruiting board will load quicker.  Feel free to talk recruiting news, rumor, information, etc.  Amateurs and experts are all welcome.  No question is too simple.  Have a projected class?  That's fine as well.

Once this thread fills up, we will start a new one.

Also, please don't fish for information from subscription websites.  Violators will be banned from this thread.

Notes:

  • OL Bobby Hart commits to Florida State. 07.16.10.
  • 2012 DB PJ Williams commits to Florida State. 07.24.10.

  • James Wilder commits 08.14.10    Removed Nick Waisome 08.14.10

FAQ:

1.  Is Texas RB considering FSU?
Somewhat, but FSU seems to be outside looking in. Credit Coach Eliot for his Texas connections getting FSU's foot in the door.  If he decides to officially visit, we will add them to the board.  It seems unlikely now with Wilder.
2.  Will FSU take 2 WRs now instead of just Rashad Greene?
This is more likely with the dismissal of Jarmon Fortson.  FSU is loaded at wide receiver and doesn't need to take another.  FSU could have as many as 13 wide receivers in 2011.  That's more than optimal and is not a good use of finite resources (85scholarships).  However, this answer likely depends on the future of Taiwan Easterling (baseball, but when?) and Cam Wade (don't see many non-contributing 5th-year seniors on the roster).  The coaches will be in the best position to determine this, and we are not going to second guess their move here.

3. What's up w/ Tony Steward?
This is a Clemson-FSU battle. Clemson is in desperate need of linebackers because its current crop lacks both quality and numbers.  Plus, Steward's idol is Ernie Sims, who was coached by Clemson LB coach Kevin Steele.  Steward named Clemson his leader following the camp.  Despite this, we are confident in FSU's position with him.  Steward is very respectful and has said good things about every school he visits.  Clemson will be an underdog in 5-7 games this season and it would be hard to see them land the top LB prospect in the nation from out of state while finishing with 5 or 6 losses.  While we are mindful that Clemson can promise him an immediate starting job playing for Ernie Sims' former coach while FSU cannot (FSU is loaded with linebacker talent), we think FSU is in good position at the present time and that FSU's position will only improve from here.  It will really depend on whether the kid prefers immediate playing time or the better program.

I noticed that we are not just going after bigger players

It seems to me we are going after smarter ones as well. A lot of the recruits we have or want teams like Duke want too. If Duke wants someone then they shouldnt have a problem getting into college. Also It almost seems like we are close to getting all the people we need. Is FSU still looking into the idea of over recruiting and getting ride of dead weight or are we past that and working with what they have.

Why is the sky blue? Because, God Loves the Infantry

by Desman on Aug 15, 2010 2:55 AM EDT reply actions

Not over recruiting in the classic Houston Nutt sense

But we are definitely recruiting more players than scholarships currently available (based on seniors leaving) and we will be trimming the dead weight next off season.

Has anyone seen the film of Marvin Bracy mentioned in AC's blog?

Acknowledging the fact that he’s a 2012 prospect and a long way off, I’m curious to see if it’s only the speed that is attracting people to the kid in spite of the fact he’s only played JV ball ’til now. Or is it common for kids to get promises of offers before ever competing at the varsity level?

Strange things are afoot at the Circle-K.

by mmmCheese on Aug 15, 2010 8:08 PM EDT reply actions

It seems like an offer built around speed and potential

If he can play then bring him in, he could a percy harvin/ trindon holliday kind of player

You can't really place Holiday/Harvin into the same mold.

Very different players, IMHO. Maybe my memory is twisted somehow, but I don’t remember Holiday being quite the “football player” that Harvin was/is.

Harvin probably outweighs him 30 lbs and is also a fairly elite pass catcher — even though he isn’t that tall, UF would throw him jump balls with regular success. Holiday was more like Louis Givens x5 — pure speed guy.

Only a sophomore, this kid could have a lot of room to grow, and at 5’9 160, he’s already close to Holiday’s size (if I recall). Hope Bracy ends up a lot more like Harvin than Holiday, if he ends up in G&G… though I’ll take a Holiday as a consolation…

by arrdub on Aug 15, 2010 9:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Trindon is only 5-5

Bracy would have a higher football ceiling IMO. More of a Jeff Demps or Harvin type I’d think

by westcoastnolefan on Aug 15, 2010 9:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed Rdub

Holliday and Harvin can’t be in the same conversation, unless you’re discussing players that run a sub 4.1 40 and whose last name start with the letter H

FSU...why not?

these recruits need to truly evaluate their “best interests” because based off last yrs underachievement of a season there are various position that should be considered as open. there’s no reason why FSU shouldn’t get a top flight back this yr we haven’t had a legit back since GJones & LWash tandom. so for all these wavering commits I’ll make it easy, Jimbo + Accountability + Stoops + Tradition= Wins & NFL Scouts banging down the doors…defense is where all the under achieving is and where all opportunities are so what’s with all the top flight defensive snubs? I mean stability is there and the commitment to success is as well so I’m still lost. Steward, Waisome, Dix you guys have to be kidding you can come right in and be in the mix so WHY NOT?

I Believe in Jimbo

by Nole954 on Aug 15, 2010 10:00 PM EDT reply actions

I've seen it all but we can do that also

bringing in top flight talent utilizing coaching and developing players, I get it. but in our heyday we were pumping guys out of doak and we were playing for it all quite frequently. the jury is still out on Jimbo that I know but hey he is changing the current up there we have to admit. we can change the “tide” with wins over Mia+Uf+Acc+Bcs bowl win(honestly thinking we’re 3 yrs away) but with the top flight recruits it’ll be sooner than later

Not only a beast, but one of those kids that going to generate nothing but good press for 3-4 straight years. An asset to the community rather than one of the mobile crime sprees we’ve observed recently.

What do the “insiders” know about him? Is he still thought to be leaning UGA over FSU?

He probably doesn't know himself

by tricknole on Aug 16, 2010 12:07 AM EDT up reply actions

Maybe not guarantee it... but hanging out as long as possible does give you the most time to make an informed decision, right?

Like last year, if a kid committed to UF in August, he wouldn’t know Meyer was a walking time bomb at that point in the season.

For Drew in particular, since he seems to be seriously considering FSU, he’ll want to watch our new defense progress for a full season under the new staff, right?

So if they’re a kid that takes their word seriously, then waiting can be a prudent approach.

by arrdub on Aug 16, 2010 9:27 AM EDT up reply actions

It only makes sense if they're just too busy in the summer/fall to see/visit/ask what they need/want to see/visit/ask.

Or if there are specific things, such as implementation of scheme or coaching changes, that will affect their position in college.

I agree completely. But Drew said he may even announce AFTER signing day. How is that necessary?

Doesn't seem to fit him, specifically,

But a lot of stuff plays out on signing day. Some recruits might want to figure out whether a school is bringing in 2 or 4 DEs (like us last year, with Lemonier, Ferguson on the line til the end).

Also, might want to consider the quality of the overall class to see if it looks like the program really made a positive stride towards improving its lot. This might very well be applicable to FSU.

Plenty of sound reasons for making decisions at various points in time… but doesn’t necessitate that a recruit applies any logic at all to the matter.

by arrdub on Aug 17, 2010 9:39 AM EDT up reply actions

I've seen people on here say he's already at about his playing weight in college.

Looking at that pic I must say I strongly disagree. Definitely looks like he could add 20+ pounds his next 3 years (make that next 4 years…1 in high school and 3 in college).

This just seems so random to be predicting UGA

Nobody is predicting UGA. I can’t even find anyone predicting UF at this point (for tomorrow). Everyone thinks FSU. Usually all that smoke turns out to be indicative of the fire…unless:

a) It’s all calculated to build drama for him when he chooses UF (in which case I would lose some respect for him)

b) He really ends up going with his heart when he gets up on the podium (in which case I wouldn’t lose respect for him)

by LouC on Aug 17, 2010 5:53 PM EDT reply actions

I still predict UF

though you’re right—lots and lots are saying FSU now. I still think we’re being set up. Probably by Wilder himself to create some excitement for the announcement.

by Nole2005 on Aug 17, 2010 8:20 PM EDT up reply actions

The only thing that bothers me about the JWJ saga is...

that ALL of this smoke immediately started after this long-time UF silent’s commitment to UF was supposedly leaked. So the theory would go that someone stole his thunder, so he took a couple steps to build the drama back up. And now we’ve seen strong rumors to several of UF’s rivals — FSU, then Alabama, now Georgia. Throw in Tennessee and I would be thoroughly convinced.

While a bunch of folks say, “don’t think of this kid like Elam” — if he’s actually orchestrated all this and it is, in fact, a sham, I think it’s a lot worse than Elam. Elam was just a kid that wanted to be a gator from the start but got scared off when their coached flipped out. That was a sincere reaction, not a full-on parade like this could turn out to be.

I’m not saying he’s that type of kid, but I don’t know what type of kid he is. But if he is that type of kid, the timing reconciles some of what is being observed. If he picks UF tomorrow, I’ll be tempted to hold him in lower regard than I hold Elam. Which is generally to say, not exactly a kid that’s got his priorities straight. And it would still be speculation because most of us will never know exactly what is going through his head/what has happened behind the scenes.

So that’s my conspiratorial angle. I hope all this stuff we’ve heard about his respect for Gran and his family’s connections with Dawsey are accurate, and we get good news tomorrow.

by arrdub on Aug 17, 2010 10:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Well said

Elam played us and I’ll never think any differently. He used FSU as a pawn when Meyer betrayed his trust (Matt: You’re cattle like the other 84 players. Thing is, Meyer knows it, you don’t). If Wilder commits to UF it would confirm that this was all just manufactured drama to bring more attention to his commitment saga. I have to say thus far it has been a rousing success

by westcoastnolefan on Aug 17, 2010 11:08 PM EDT up reply actions

IMO he's a Gate.

I think it’s one of these, “I went with my heart, has always dreamed of playing at UF”. Dismissing spread offense questions, and Meyer has promised to structure offense around him.

Just a random thought

but a commitment from Wilder today could be a bad thing. What if he commits but then we don’t have the season he hoped for (say 8-4)? He might then jump ship which could result in some of our other commits following suit. Maybe a pessimistic thought but I see it as a possibility.

by Nole Holds Barred on Aug 18, 2010 9:47 AM EDT reply actions   1 recs

Still doesn't make it a bad thing

If a bad season could run him off it wouldn’t matter if he committed to us or didnt. If he commits to us then at this point he’s ours to have and to hold, we blow it we blow it. But if a bad year could lose him then in no way is him committing to us today a bad thing.

Shot a Gator in Jean Shorts just to watch him die.

by AMFKNole on Aug 18, 2010 10:51 AM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

I really doubt our coaches are going around telling recruits we're going 11-1 or the like this year.

Which means they won’t be too surprised if we do go 8-4, which would likely be a solid, but unspectacular year. If we show Wilder we run the ball effectively and aren’t some gimmick offense like his other finalist, then we shouldn’t lose him.

I say with these guys and our current class

with the right breaks, 2011 is not too early to be discussing a run at it.

The O will return 8 starters (EJ replaces Ponder, a prospect that isn’t nearly as scary after seeing some of the things EJ did late last season and the two vacated O-Line spots will be filled by guys who have been in the program for several years, the C will likely be a Sr) and the D will be two years into the transformation (for the large leaps programs have taken over the years this is the year where the major change seems to typically occur), we will return 7 starters (losing the entire starting LB corp but replacing them with CJones, Luc and some combination of Williams, Smith and Terrell. Markus White will be gone but in his place will be both Dan Hicks and The German (who could easily weigh almost 290 by then).

I say starting in 2011 we should be looking pretty solid. But by 2012 there are no excuses.

has anyone heard anything about another former NFL running back whose kid is a stud……2012 recruit Barry Sanders Jr.? He currently lives in Oklahoma and obviously could land in-state, but he has mentioned he would like an offer from FSU a few times over the summer. I still want 1 more QB Jacoby Brissett if we could. 1 TE either O’Leary or Fulse.
1 LB Tony Steward. 2 OL Erin Joe, Ruben Carter. 3 DE Ray Drew, Giorgio Newberry, Jermauria Rasco. ! DT Terry Bell. That would be nine more making 24.

After missing on 2 DENDS last year. Ferg & Lem, with Cummings moving over to DT...

The Germanator is getting huge (maybe DT by his sophomore year?) We have to hit the mark on DEND this year imo. Yes we will have a great class but missed on our greatest need if we do not get 2 of our 3 targets at DEND.

Drew is a must. With either Newberry or Rasco. Lynch was once an FSU lean, is now a Domer commit. We told FSU lean Ricardo Williams to look elsewhere and he is committed to UCF now. Which leads me to think that Jimbo & Co are confident with Drew & Newberry. Also, I think we are the team to beat for DEND Mario Edwards Jr. in 2012.

Highly regarded is in the eye of the beholder

It is difficult to gauge lineman. Many lineman or 6-5, 6-6. What separates the good from the bad is attitude, dedication and heart. Trickett is good at spotting that among lineman nobody else notices. Sometimes you find it in a four star, Sanders etc. Sometimes with a three star like Datko or Hudson, two guys not everyone was rushing to sign.

If Trickett is going to take a second look at you, being mean is a prerequisite.

Reminds me of the Seantrel’s dominance, driving DL downfield. Don’t know about the level of the competition though.

He physically looks very unimpressive

Most of that 320 is in the belly rather than the upper and lower body. He looks like he desperately needs Viloria. Although I’ve never seen his game film.

Will there be any scouting reports posted on the big board for Ruben Carter and Arrington Jenkins?

Been hearing a lot about these two lately. Seems like there’s mutual interest. Would like to learn more about them.

Carter is close to being a lock

his stock is rising. Could play DL or OL, FSU likes him at OL. This season will be very telling on him, we expect him in this class.

yes. Probably afte Oklahoma week.

This team will improve in '10... on its 16-16 conference record over the last 4 years.... after losing 20 games in the last 4 years... after having the 7th worst major-conference defense... after not even winning its own division in the ACC in the last 4.

Carter is one that might make this class.

Jenkins on the other hand is a bit of a gamble. His grades could become an issue and whether or not he can even qualify remains to be seen. Better prospects out there at Jenkins position in my opinion.

Why so high on Carter?

assuming that by “make” you meant “will make this a nice class” and not “sign”.

Carter will improve by leaps and bounds

under Trickett’s direction. I’m not that “high” on him, I just think he lands in this class. Jenkins doesn’t in my opinion.

DL that can play OL

Defensive Lineman that can play OL, if they are not quick enough to play defense, etc
That way you always have to many DL and you convert them to OL if they can’t make. I like this because it is harder to find DL (usually due to grades, injury etc). OL are usually the smartest group on the team

I want to know who as well?! Bud??? Nolethur&thru? Anybody know?

by FEARTHESPEAR! on Aug 22, 2010 1:35 PM EDT reply actions

I am not sure who has recently called Fisher

but I can pretty much guarantee you that any kid remotely interested in FSU for the next 3 years took notice when JWJ chose FSU.

That said, JWJ’s commitment does not mean that every remaining kid we get will be a 5/4 star or that all of the top prospects are now seriously considering FSU. It does help to get that kind of publicity and it very well may be a tipping point for some of the guys on the fence, but it doesn’t mean FSU now leads for each of our targets (like some Noles would lead you to believe right now). Tempered optimism folks.

Wait a minute...

You mean that JWJ’s commitment doesn’t automatically mean that we’re going to land every other elite target with ease?

That’s NOT how they told me it works.

Texas has offered Rasco which makes them (Not LSU) the probable favorite

Hearing #Florida State has pulled into very good position with Evangel (La.) DE Jermauria Rasco. #LSU #Texas #Bama #Auburn

On Rasco, from a great Texas connect

For a long time, I thought that Texas was finished with Rasco because of the overall depth at the position in the program and because the class is almost full now. Missing out on AS-J after it looked for months like he was coming keeps another spot open, increasing the odds that there will be room for Rasco, who could end up being the last commitment in the class. The other players vying for that spot include Aaron Green, the San Antonio running back who has talked about playing with Malcolm Brown in college and possibly a defensive back like Charles Jackson if the coaches decide that they need another DB in the group, which seems unlikely right now.

Everything has sounded positive on Rasco recently, and, as mentioned above, there are some connections — Evangel has sent some players to Texas in the past, including Will Russ last season and it helps to have a former Horn on the coaching staff, though Geiggar is not the head coach. Then there is the possibility of his mom moving to Houston, where he has relatives already. It sounds like LSU is kind of fading for whatever reason and that Florida State is in good shape, but hard to say about any leaders because Rasco refuses to name any, which I think is probably a good decision on his part, particularly if he really isn’t sure right now.

I think Texas does want him at end, though he would probably see some time at the stand-up Buck position. Either that doesn’t bother him or the coaches haven’t spoken with him much about it because Alabama wanting him for a similar position in their 3-4 scheme didn’t sit well with him and he had a terrible experience playing linebacker in a 7-on-7 event that probably permanently soured him on the position.

Horncasting sums up the defensive end position in 2011 pretty well and I would only add that Reed is a guy who could probably play some three tech or 3-4 defensive end when he gets done growing into his body, so he may well not ever be a guy in the Texas program who comes off the edge. There is also a linebacker commit, Kendall Thompson, who could end up being big enough to play in the Buck position as an edge rusher and Steve Edmond could as well, though I personally think that is less likely. Basically, Texas is stacked at the position even though it’s technically just Reed at DE in 2011 and though it hasn’t scared Rasco off yet, it’s probably occurred to him that there is going to be serious competition there if he decides to come to Texas.

Rasco would be the only true DE in Texas’ class
With Reed being a DE/DT hybrid and Thompson LB/DE hybrid.

His main competition would likely come from Alex Okafor (true soph), Jackson Jeffcoat (true fr) and Reggie Wilson (true fr). The other DE’s from the previous 2 classes have already been moved to either DT (Mims/Daniels) or TE (Jones). There are three super-elite guys there.

Thanks Bud

Just don;t understand with the leite underclassmen in front of him why FSU wouldn’t be his favorite. He can come in here right away and be in the rotation
