FSU's First Scrimmage: Offensively An "Embarrassing" and "Wasted Day"
Those were just some of the words used by Heisman hopeful Christian Ponder on Friday to describe the offensive performance after the first scrimmage of the 2010 football campaign. Here are a couple more of CP7's comments, courtesy of Andrew Carter's Chopping Block, where you can also read some of AC's thoughts.
"It was a complete lack of focus."
And:
"If we play like this, we’re going to lose a lot of games. That’s the truth."
And:
"I didn’t see this coming … definitely a wasted day."
And:
"This is embarrassing, to be honest."
And for those of you who thought Jimbo Fisher was just talking coach-speak with all the praises he had been giving out since the start of fall practice, here is how a not-too-pleased Fisher summed up the scrimmage.
"Offense was very erratic – very sloppy."
And:
"About they played last year, wasn’t it? You guys got us anointed as a great offense. Not me. We don’t play great every game."
And, in response to where the offense needs to go between now and the start of the season:
"A long way from where we’re at. But we’ll get better. A lot of had to do with the defense. They did some good things. But a lot of it didn’t have to do with them, which is more scary. Because the plays were there, and you made them, and you dropped the ball and you did something stupid, too."
You can watch Fisher's full post-scrimmage interview here.
There was no need to turn on the Doak Campbell Stadium scoreboard for Florida State's initial preseason football scrimmage Friday afternoon.
It would have merely illuminated the fact that the Seminoles have a lot of ground to cover in order to be where coach Jimbo Fisher wants his team for the Sept. 4 opener against Samford.
"The defense played pretty good," Fisher said afterward. "The offense was very erratic and sloppy. We're a long ways from where we want to be, but we'll get better. The defense did a lot of great things, but a lot of it didn't have to do with them. The plays were there and we made them, but we dropped the ball or did something stupid."
A rash of mistakes - fumbles, interceptions and a handful of penalties - prevented the offense from putting together a single-sustained scoring drive in six series, much to Fisher's chagrin. Of course, the other side of the coin was quite a bit shinier, as the defensive unit continued to show improvement. They came up with five takeaways including two that went for scores, building on the momentum shown over the first eight days of the preseason.
"It was really just fun," said sophomore cornerback Greg Reid. "We're starting to understand the defense better and were flying around the ball and making plays. That's what we want.
"I think we've come a long way, but we have a ways to go. We'll find out when the games come. I can't call it success, yet."
Senior quarterback Christian Ponder stopped just short of calling the offensive performance a complete failure.
"The bright side of it is there's a lot of room for improvement," Ponder said. "There's a lot of ways we can get better. We didn't perform like we should have. We played pretty bad. There were a lot of mistakes. It all goes back to focus; a complete lack of focus.
"I take the blame for that. As the quarterback, I've got to make sure that everyone is doing what they're supposed to do. I could have made some throws early to get the momentum on our side, but I didn't do what I was supposed to do and that affected the rest of the offense."
All five turnovers occurred in the first three series, which spanned approximately 34 plays.
"We had a couple picks, dropped some balls, but most of them were fumbles," said Fisher.
Some of the credit belongs to a defensive unit that was anxious to wrap up and tackle for the first time this preseason.
"We were really enthused about being able to bring people down to the ground," redshirt sophomore linebacker Vince Williams said. "This was the first time we were able to tackle. ... We don't like to see people break through the line and run for touchdowns. That's not something we want to get used to."
From that standpoint, the defense had every reason to be pleased. Of course, it's hard to beat the enjoyment of collecting takeaways.
"When somebody makes a mistake you need to be there to counter it," Williams added. "That's what a defense really is. I guess you could say we were forcing (turnovers), but really we were taking advantage of situations."
Fisher declined to cite specific players on defense, but emphasized the collective performance of the unit.
"The front guys did a pretty good job," Fisher said. "A couple of the linebackers made plays, but nobody really jumped out. But they played solid across the board which is pretty good - a lot of them made plays. When the whole group is playing well, it's hard for one guy to stand out."
Despite his own disappointment with the offense, Ponder was equally impressed with the defense.
"The good thing for us is the defense played really well," he said. "They definitely dominated this scrimmage and that's a good thing to see."
As for the offense, Ponder didn't candy-coat his feelings.
"If we play like this we're going to lose a lot of games and that's the truth," Ponder said. "We can't play like this. We have to fix a lot of things and guys have to step up. It starts with me."
The process that Fisher often speaks of will carry over from the meeting room to the practice field Saturday afternoon, with the Seminoles scheduled to go at 3 p.m.
"We've got to get back to basics (tomorrow)," Fisher said. "Line them up and butt them in the mouth. We'll find out who can hold onto the ball, who can block and who can tackle. People used to say Coach Bowden's old adage was blocking and tackling, [and] it is. Can you block, can you tackle, are you fundamentally sound, do you hold onto the football? That's what you've got to do."

Not worried at all
Apparently a lot of the problem was fumbling, which could be jitters from the first bit of tackling of the year or first scrimmage. By the time the stats count anyone who can’t hold on to the ball won’t play. Collecting 2 INTs is a good sign for the defense, as is the confidence the players seem to have in the scheme.
From Andrew Carter regarding fumbles:
-Will that have an effect on who will win the starting job at running back? Yes. Yes it will. Jimbo made that quite clear during his commentary. To this point, it had sounded like Fisher had been pleased with the progression of both Chris Thompson and Jermaine Thomas. Sounded like at least one took a step backwards today.
Wish we knew who committed the fumbles. When I first read it, my first thought was about Thompson. With all the positive talk about Thompson so far, I had this nagging feeling about fumbles with him. In my head, it felt like I saw him fumble a lot last year. Then I went and checked the stats and he only fumbled twice (though in only 23 carries and he lost both). So while he isn’t nearly as fumble-prone as I thought I recalled (those fumbles really stuck out in my head for some reason though), I still wonder how his hands are.
But we won’t know I suppose unless we see CT walking around campus and going to class with a ball in his hands. It could have just as easily been Thomas, Jones or Pryor. To be sort of fair, Thomas had three fumbles, none of which were lost, on 163 carries last year. I say ‘sort of’ because I’m too lazy to go back and look for fumbles from Jones or Pryor.
Strange things are afoot at the Circle-K.
I was wondering the same thing.
If it was Thompson I would not be surprised if he lost a spot.

haha. Well if they are so small he can’t hold onto a football, he wont be getting too many reps.

Fumbling nearly once every 10 carries is awful.
That’s much worse than I remembered.

Ouch, Fisher sounded a little more agitated with the Offense than he admits. Do like the part about doing some smash mouth drills. Really like that he will play the best man, sometimes that gets lost in the shuffle. Love that the D stepped it up, getting them some confidence will go a long way. Thanks for all the links and info..
Can't have everything going too well too often.
Guys get lazy. Stop working so hard. Bad juju. Heck, I’d be fully satisfied if this was all drummed up lies. EVERY PRACTICE needs to come out looking just like this and then we need to “eek” a 14 or 21 point win out of Samford. Why? Oklahoma would think we’re playing like crap, wouldn’t they? Maybe underestimate us? Hmm?
DISCLAIMER: Everything posted by DutchFSU operates under the premise that Christian Ponder remains healthy during the entire 2010 football season. As well as the entire Seminole offensive line, most of the cheerleaders, and quite a few of those seated in the student section. Maybe even a hot dog vendor.
yes, winning by 40-50 points would be bad on several levels.

We need a blow out vs Samford something like 52 to 3.
It will show our defense actual results in regards to this zone scheme making them even more comfortable. Not to mention getting some of our second team guys playing time. Where we need a 21 to 14 win is vs Oklahoma to show toughness and attention to detail.

I would be insanely happy with a 14-21 win over OU
But I’m not expecting that to happen…
How does predicting a final score translate to a team playing tough and having attention to detail?

my percentage for OU is
25%
Now we know that
Attention to detail accounts for a range of 5 to 25 percent.
Proper toughness accounts for 10 to 30 percent.
So for my percentage I have it at 5 and 10 percent of that 25 percent prediction. The other 10 percent of the 25 is proper preparation, coaching, talent level, strength match ups etc.
With great toughness and attention to detail FSU can max out those ranges . This would add an entire 40 percent to the prediction giving FSU the advantage! But I just don’t see FSU being that tough or attention to detail oriented the first few games, hence the 25 percent.
The above is science. It’s a fact.

FEAR THE SPEAR!!!!!!!!!
I like this idea of watching the quarterback
Seems a lot better than chasing a receiver down field who is in the process of scoring on an 80 yard bomb.
Chris Thompson from pictures looks almost like he could weigh around 200 lbs. He has really beefed up. I hope it wasn’t him fumbling the ball. He fumbled in the Clemson game, inside Clemson territory. If FSU had taken it in for a score, it would have been 21-7. As it was Clemson went in for a score and made it 14-14. I am sure Fisher remembers this and so do I. Thompson needs to forget about that extra twist this year and hold onto the ball.
Bring back Peter Tom Willis

I'm not really that concerned.
I think our offense will be fine, I am happy to hear our defense actually has a pulse though.

Isn't in funny how relieved we all are that we had a bad practice!?
I guess it just makes me feel better because he’s obviously disappointed in the play today. Which (probably) also means that all those other days that he said practice was “good” and he “saw some good things”, he was more than likely telling the truth.
It’s just a big relief to me.
I am thinking the same thing. That's why I wrote that comment about Jimbo allegedly talking coach-speak all week in my story.
I could be wrong, but I think Jimbo will pretty much tell it like it is when he is speaking to the reporters right after practice.

Playing poorly isn't a relief to me.
MiNDSET? SWAG-ER-ISM!!!
---------------------------------------------------------
"Trick is right."
"Wherever you are, Trick, you are wise, indeed."
"Correct, Sir Trick."
the point I was making...
was not that I was relieved we played poorly. Actually that makes me nervous about our offense taking a step back this year. I’m mad about that.
But I just thought, “okay, he just told us they played bad. He told us he was disappointed. He didn’t try to hide it. So why would he be lying to us about the other practices. If he’s telling us they played badly today, and ALL the other days he told us they played well, then I have to believe that they HAVE been playing well…since we’ve started practice.”
It doesn’t mean I’m not bummed out about a bad scrimmage. Matter of fact I’m more upset that they played badly during the scrimmage because it, for the most part, is the closest they will be to playing an actual game.
I know the point you were making.
Am I glad/relieved/whatever that Fisher will tell it how it is in preseason practice? Meh. I don’t care. I don’t really read the ins and outs of the practice reports. I read some of the quotes to see what players may have to say about specific improvements they’re working on or areas they think they’ve improved upon from last season. I like looky at da piktures two. But I don’t think whether it was a “good” practice or a “bad” practice matters much. It’s probably not near as bad as it sounded and the good practices probably weren’t as good as those sounded, either. It’s just talk. As long as learning is occurring and progress is being made, execution is crispening, it’s all good. And that is just something none of us are privy to.
I’m not relieved that Fisher will “tell me how it is” on practice reports because I’m only going to hear what he wants me to hear anyways. And I would rather Fisher lie his ass off to me every day about how good/bad practice was if it meant on game day we played like worldbeaters. That’s just my outlook on this.
MiNDSET? SWAG-ER-ISM!!!

"Trick is right."
"Wherever you are, Trick, you are wise, indeed."

But I'm not relieved he doesn't lie
im relieved that he’s liked the way they’ve been practicing thus far. The only reason I’m hanging on his word is because he’s the only word I get to hear. So that’s the only way I know progress IS being made. If I had another source to tell me how practices have been going, I wouldn’t care if Fisher lies or not. But he’s all I have to go on.
So if he says progress is being made, you believe it's being made, but you don't really have any clue just how much progress, right?

First 3 home games last year = 9 Fumbles Lost
Only 1 Fumble in the last 6 total games, so that’s a nice change.
FSU Defense 2010: Taking back 1st down.
Turnover Margin
is one area that we’ll see start to see a (gradual) improvement with Jimbo as HC and Stoops as DC. Ponder made a huge improvement in INTs from 2008 to 2009 (esp. if you throw out the Clemson game).
