FSU Come In At #21

"Heads hung low and body language that exuded little confidence. Last year was no fun for the defensive players at Florida State.
The defense felt defeated after allowing 30 points per game. Reliving the experience by watching game film only rubbed salt into the wound.
The first job for new defensive coordinator Mark Stoops and the other assistants was to rebuild the psyche of the players. Teaching has been hands-on and, for the most part, positive."

well its Tuesday for me
Im starting to think that Im getting set up. Like for some reason when I read things now I feel our Def is going to be what our Offence should and our offence is going to be what our Def was. I know better and I know our Offences is going to be ok. As for the Def. I hope they surprise me this year.

I'm not so sure this Jimbo fella is the right man for the job.
That's scary, because
you might have to disgorge all your profits from this post.

WTF?
You’re Frank mutha effin D Nole! You should be able to weez on Bud’s gig w/ swag factor alone. Change the damn title! ;)

I like the looks of that freshman Brodrick Bunkley in the photo.
Seems like he could have potential on our thin DL. Glad to see Haggins is taking a personal interest in keeping him cool.
"There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese." -- Coach Finstock
Have been wanting to add my thank-you...
…for all the hard work linking up these articles. Hm. That sounds sarcastic but isn’t.
Haggins article is great
and the last quote is the best “They need to set their own standards. Embrace the history, but set your own standards. Take it to a higher level.” I hope and pray defensive line play comes around and if any of these guys can rewrite some FSU defensive stats I might just fall out of my chair.
"We didn't lose the game; we just ran out of time." - Vince Lombardi
So glad Jimbo retained Coach Odell. Odell is one of the good guys in CFB and a damned fine coach, it’s a shame that some crook like Blake put the screws to him and that coupled w/ all the other BS going on pushed him to the limit I would expect. Again I’m very glad we still have him on staff and barring injury I really feel out DT’s are gonna impress this year.
Gotta keep recruiting GA, and I suspect we will. Honestly if I were in Jimbo’s shoes I’d focus solely on FL and S GA and anything else would be gravy. Sorry, but if you can’t field a NC caliber team from the studs that grew up in that region it’s probably time to find another avenue of work. Also we can focus on FL while UF goes national, a mistake we’ve already made.
Ameica, Land of the free and home to the entitled.
I think the FL- S Ga recruiting bed
is one of ther reasons Jimbo stays at FSU for the long haul. It makes his job, and success, much easier than it would be at any SEC school outside the state, for example. Even a Bowden could succeed here (did I just say that out loud?) :)

Put a fence aroung south Georgian and North Florida (and Lower Alabama?)
Jimbo said something like this when he became the the OC. I recently heard a Tallahassee beat writer on the Cameron Show, talking about this very thing. He was saying how the ‘Noles started cherry picking players from all over the country about 10 years ago and got away from taking the best in the neighborhood. Hey, you could imagine the previous staff- intoxicated by the previous decade’s success – becoming a little flattered with the calls and video showing up from around the country and becoming lazy in the process. ( It is interesting, too, how uFlorida is seemingly falling into the same MO. )
So, to test the ‘take the guys from your backyard’ theory, I checked out a scouting site (not premium, of course!) for ‘Athletes’ in the 2011 class. Of course, offensive linemen might be a different story AND this is a sampling from only one site, but here it is (full disclosure, I’m not an actuary) -
Of the 24 ‘Athletes’ listed, only 3 were from outside the southeast. One each from Illinois, New York and Oregon. Three more were from NorKarlina, Tennysee and Vahginya. Of the 18 remaining players, eight are from Jawja leaving 10 from Fladah. Hmmm…
Now look at our stellar LB class from 2010. LA (lower Alabama), Georgia and Florida and one from Texas – they grow pretty good players out there too. And our stellar WO class? Florida. Our great DB class – Florida.
It appears that Jimbo is following his mandate.
First post here on this entertaining, informative site. Hope I stayed within the rules.

I don't think being able to cherry pick nationally is a bad thing at all.
If you lock up a significant amount of the guys from your area that you want, and they accepted into school, stay qualified in school, stay clear of the law, and coach them well, then recruiting nationally won’t hurt you. Hasn’t hurt UF. Didn’t hurt USC. Ohio State does the same thing.
I don’t believe going after national recruits is what hurt FSU. Not getting kids in. Not keeping them in. And poor coaching. That’s what did FSU in. Jmo.

I thought Thompson looked bigger
According to that article he is at 186 lbs. That is already close to ten pounds heavier than Warrick Dunn played at. But looking at pics I thought he might be around 200 lbs. He is big enough now.

He's only like 5'7", so a muscular 186 is pretty big.

Cant wait to see what Christian Green, Rodney Smith and Greg Dent do this year
CG especially. The fact he wasnt a 5-star coming out was travesty.
CG was a 5 star per scout.

GO NOLES!!! SCALP EM!
I do like their talent level, also
But our offense is most potent and dynamic when WRs run the correct routes crisply and hold onto the ball. That’s why a guy like Rod Owens was so important to our offense last year, and while Taiwan’s return is critical. Just as Jimbo is a “systems” guy, our offense is a system offense: Do the things asked of you, and you’re looking at supremely high success rates.
It’s why a team like New England seemingly always has “superstar” wideouts: They get the guys that fit their system, and it appears on the surface like NE has the best talent on the field. While I am not arguing that they do not have the most talent, I will argue they have the best guys out there for their system.
FSU Defense 2010: Taking back 1st down.
I feel like Goodman gets left out of the "best WR in 2009" talk because he was injured the 2nd half of the season.
Guy was our best receiver the first 1/3 of the season, by far, imo. Not taking anything away from anyone else, just trying to give Goodman some dap.

I know that there's plenty of flashier stuff to be excited about
But if that stuff about the punting is true and comes to pass, that shouldn’t be underestimated as well.

After reading that SI preview
It is really hard to believe that as bad as we were last year, we were within a touchdown of winning 3 of the games we lost, (UM, GT, BC). I remember all of these games, but when you think about how bad we played last year, it’s easy to forget how many games we were in. This is in no way saying that we should have been 10-3 or anything of the sort. It’s more of a positive thing, because if you think about all the improvements we’ve made, it puts our possible amount of success into perspective. I for one am very excited (somewhat cautiously) about the possibilities of this team. Sorry for rambling, just got me a little pumped up
It's not like we weren't capable of beating USF or Clemson, either.

Lots of ESPN love
Ponder listed among the top 5 Heisman contenders. Both the UM and OU games listed as top 20 games for the year. Really can’t wait for the season to start.
Last I heard he is a GA.
