Florida State News 08.17.10
Likely 3rd-team corner Dionte Allen has left the team. The impact of this is fairly minimal and is covered here. Allen was not beating out Greg Reid and was probably not beating out Lamarcus Joyner. I wish Allen well in his quest to find playing time. Hope he stays healthy.
Scrimmage Thoughts: I wouldn't read too much into the first scrimmage. Lots of young guys were in and out. The defense should win over the offense in a scrimmage setting (that they did not last year was a precursor to a horrible season of defense). Rhodes might pull away from Jenijie at Boundary corner. If so, that's a great sign as he is the physically superior player and would have the mental game down. I think Telvin Smith is going to be a beast on special teams this season.
FSU is 6th in the latest ESPN recruiting rankings.
Myerberg weighs in on UNC, placing the Tar Heels at #20. Also has an independent take on the Heel's offense here. And the 5&5 is here. That's probably an hour of reading right there on UNC. Get to know the heels.
ShakinTheSouthland has a summary of Clemson's first week.
The guys at BloggerSoDear let you know that Wake is looking at a few different quarterbacks as it transitions back to the spread option.

I think every needs to remember it is how we finish that maters. Some Noles are starting to predict a top 3 finish for our class this year, which I just don’t see happening. We have to remember that it is rare for a team with our record for the last few years to pull top 10 classes like we are doing.
by osceolafan2.0 on Aug 17, 2010 11:56 AM EDT up reply actions
I agree. Seriously doubt a top three class is even remotely possible
Not when we’re taking 10 linemen (offensive and defensive). If we can pull a top ten class while filling those needs that bodes very well for us. McCray’s injury and Jacobs not making it has driven that point home for me personally

Top 5 is certainly possible.
Rasco
Drew
Newberry
O’Leary
Wilder
Steward
All top 100/150 type players.
We may take all 6. We may only land 2. But if we take all 6, which I don’t think is impossible, we’re definitely a top 5 class. Even if we only land 3 or 4, which I think is most likely, we’re still probably a top 5 class.

I would love that class
but thats batting 100; Use your win prediction method and we end up with halfish. I wouldnt be surprised with 2.
Do your own to show me why landing 3 isn't likely.

Hmmm...
Rasco – 35%
Newberry – 80%
O’Leary – 45%
Wilder – 45%
Steward – 45%
TOTAL – 250% = 2.5 more studs
How do we come out if we keep the ones we have, then land 3 more, compared to historic class rankings (according to # of top 150 players)?
And do DLs as a position really drag down your star rating? OLs, yes, but not DLs…. see UF last year. Don’t think they’re discriminated against at all.
And further on that point, 1 of our highest rated guys is an OL (Hart). I don’t think this logic of lineman skewing our class downwards works for us now that the number of slots we’re filling has grown so substantially.
You left out Drew, fwiw.
No, the linemen won’t skew it too badly, imo. You’re right, it’s only OL that can skew OL, and it’s very possible to load up on 4* OL and have no negative effect at all.

Football is played with an oblong ball. Take your roundball and GTFO...
I would go something like...
Rasco – 40%
Newberry – 90%
O’Leary – 45%
Wilder – 45%
Steward – 55%
Drew – 45%
TOTAL – 250% = 3.2 more studs
Is Bell considered a stud? He’s not ranked…at all, but neither was Lawrence-Stample when he committed (I think). I’d put Bell at 40% fwiw.

I think he saw that FanHouse article (or whoever it was) and was relaying it.
But he also said something to the effect of hoping it was inaccurate. He freely admits he doesn’t follow recruiting that closely so worry about him having any kind of inside knowledge.

Yea, I saw that article after posting my comment above.
I don’t think of FanHouse as all that credible, and even if I’m wrong and it is, I don’t know why a source would go to FanHouse instead of another, better outlet. Methinks this is what Cameron was talking about. And it’s a little irresponsible for Cameron to throw that out there without saying no one else is corroborating the story and that FanHouse, Fanhouse, of all sites, is breaking it.

Oops on Drew.
For whatever reason, I’m more doubtful about him, though. I guess I’d put him at 35-40%, which still bumps me up to ~3 more studs as well.
As for why my numbers might look low… basically, I chose to distribute 90% across the reputed leaders, and then 10% for the out-of-left-field candidates… we’ll call them “New Mexico’s” or “Blake’s”… that come in and swoop up a recruit, or other yet to be known factors (arrests?) that prevent them from signing with us or any of their schools of apparent choice.
So basically a 45% is a dead-heat between us and 1 other school, while a 45% in a race with more than 2 suitors represents a pretty substantial lead. Hope folks can follow that logic, I think it’s pretty reasonable.
You guys are also leaving off Lynch...

And I read some of the stuff she was posting on the ND board a few weeks prior to Lynch committing (so a few weeks after out of the blue he announced us his leader) and any optimism I had stopped. Aren’t a whole lot of parents going around posting on message boards about how excited they are to go to a city and school like that.

TOTAL – 365% = 3.65 more studs (nearly a whole half a stud higher than yesterday’s 3.2)

Rasco – 40% – don’t really know much here, so Ill take your word
Newberry – 80% – 90 is a bit high for someone who hasnt committed yet, but I like him @ fsu
O’Leary – 40% – I think with a 10 win UM season, he is theirs to lose
Wilder – 95% – really don’t think he looks around. Seems like a smart kid
Steward – 40% – He’s going to choose a proven Steele over an unknown Hudson/miniStoops
Drew – 35% – Think he’s a dwag.
TOTAL – 3.3
pretty close tho.
Definitely a possibility for variance amongst our percentages and I may realistically be ~5% high on a few.
The main thing is that I bet your 3.3 total is up fairly significantly over where it would’ve been 2 days ago due to Wilder’s commitment.

Oh..
In 2006 we had 7 ESPNU top 150 guys (Rose, D. McDaniel, Warren, M. Sims, M. Ball, Piurowski, Rolle).
In 2007 we had 2 (Allen and Paul).
In 2008 we had 5 (Carr, Parks, Thomas, Bradham, Manuel).
In 2009 we had 5 (Downs, J. McDaniel, McAllister, Reid, Demps).
In 2010 we had 8 (Joyner, Luc, Jones, Green, Shaw, Smith, Terrell, Cummings).
If we add 3 more in 2011 we’ll have 9 (Williams, Hart, Smith, hunter, Lawrence-Stample, Greene + 3).
In 2006 we had 6 Rivals100 (Rose, D. McDaniel, Warren, M. Sims, M. Ball, Rolle).
In 2007 we had 3 (Allen, Greenlee, Smith).
In 2008 we had 4 (Fortson, Moody, Bradham, Manuel).
In 2009 we had 5 (Downs, Reid, J. McDaniel, Smith, McAllister).
In 2010 we had 4 (Jones, Green, Luc, Joyner).
If we add 3 more in 2011 we’ll have 5 (Williams, Hart + 3).
Looking at our best class in the past 6 years by ESPN and tied for our 2nd best class in the apst 6 years by Rivals. If you mean all-time, then this class likely won’t stack up in terms of # of top rated recruits. Our 2002 Rivals ranking had SIX 5*, plus Wimbley, Nicholson, Buster Davis and Bunkley as 4*. Not to mention some of the great classes in the 80’s and 90’s. But it’s a good enough class to distance ourselves in the ACC. And if we distance ourselves recruiting-wise a little bit every year for 4-5 years, we become the class of the league again.

that list is hurtful but an eye opener.
That shows how accurate these rankings are. And Why anyone would put stock in a ranking that punishes you for getting linemen is mysterious.
Also beyond logic is how a small class of great prospects finishes behind big class of good players.
by Ponder This on Aug 17, 2010 11:53 PM EDT up reply actions
Linemen are just tough to rate is all because of the amount of physical development that occurs on campus
So you aren’t punished but rather than miss very often by guessing at who are the 4 and 5 star players (seeing as many linemen are NOT ready to contribute their first year on campus) the services will just rate most 3 stars.

I think it is a wrap. Rhodes starts. Seems they are cross-training Jenije at (S) some.
I wouldn’t mind to see Jenije rotate in some here or there. He has a nose for getting picks but he busted a lot of coverages. I do not want him starting. Unless he has improved a lot in coverage. Maybe Mangum wasn’t where he was suppose to be and it made him look worse than it seemed.

He is set to announce at 3:45 a.m.
And it is being broadcast on UHF station 64. You’ll have to find someone with that kind of set and be waiting in their living room at precisely that time.

He is the best "football player" out of our outstanding freshman LB core, IMO
His film tells me that he is instincts and football speed you can’t exactly teach. Baller for sure and in my group of the most under-rated prospect we signed last year. I also include Werner and T.Brooks in that category.
Those 3 will be stars before their careers are over.

Best FB player? Have you seen C. Jones' tapes?
The guy moves like a CB. (Note that this is a pleasurable argument to engage in — not a slight on your evaluation!)
Jones has the better frame.
But I couldn’t argue someone who said Smith’s film was better. In one 3 play sequence it was something like sack the QB on 1st, stuff the run on 2nd, pick off a pass on 3rd down.

Specifically some of that camp film of him in pass coverage. He just glides around the field for a guy that size.
Telvin runs great for a 200 pounder, but what’s impressive about Jones is the way he runs while carrying all that extra weight.
Excited about both of them.
I thought Zach_Nole was talking about true in-game linebacking skills.
Not necessarily camp skills, which is what I would categorize Jones’ size and “the way he runs” into. Jmo.
