Florida State News 08.18.10
We will have a James Wilder Junior discussion thread today at 2pm and an article on his decision when he pulls the trigger shortly after 5ish.
As for yesterday's practice, coach Fisher really tried to stress mental toughness.
- FSU's offensive line is pretty banged up right now. Left Tackle Andrew Datko is still out with the shoulder issue. He has always struggled with shoulder and elbow problems and typically plays quite well in spite of those. If this actually happened in a game, I believe Zebrie Sanders would move from right tackle to left tackle and the right tackle spot would go to Garrett Faircloth or Henry Orelus.
- Starting right guard David Spurlock is still working his way back slowly from his mystery injury (concussion?), but he is expected to be ready to go on opening day. Bryan Stork is one of the guards who has seen time in his absence, as has Blake Snider, although Snider is also banged up now.
- I am not worried about the offensive line because in a year which FSU isn't likely to be a nationally relevant squad, the conference season is the most important. I don't think FSU will lose any non-conference games it isn't expected to lose because of a banged up offensive line. And I think the line will be fine by the start of conference season.
- The receivers are working at two positions each as the cross-training continues.
- Looks like Chris Thompson was one of the guys who put the ball on the ground in the scrimmage. Let's see if Jermaine Thomas can grab the opportunity to win back his starting job.
- We've been hearing really good things about Bjoern Werner. He's a bit banged up right now but had been excellent in practices as of last week.

C'mon
Christ Thompson, what is the deal with the fumbleitis. Recurring problem for him. Bud, what do you think the chances are that the starting 5 on oline are ready to go for the first game?

I really am not sure. They are being pretty guarded with the injury info
Perhaps the better question is “do you want them resting or playing”
This team will improve in '10... on its 16-16 conference record over the last 4 years.... after losing 20 games in the last 4 years... after having the 7th worst major-conference defense... after not even winning its own division in the ACC in the last 4.

I do want them resting I guess.
Would like to see them play against OU though. Not so much for me maybe (yes, a lot for me, I lie) but you know it is a big deal for them. I guarantee they don’t’ want to miss an opportunity to play those guys.
And I didn’t mean to turn Chris Thompson’s first name into a religious slur. HAHA. Just happened.

I'll call him whatever he wants if he stops fumbling the ball...

He was inspired by Tebow
Sheriff Branford: The fact that you are a sheriff is not germane to the situation.
Buford T. Justice: The god damn Germans got nothin' to do with it!
They might want to re-think the Mr.Dependable nickname if he is coughing it up.

it was obvious
Thompson was the fumbler. He had a problem with that in the past. Any time you have a guy with bad hands in practices it tends to show back up in the first games and then again in the bowl game. Thompson seemed to be an exception last year, as he learned to protect the ball when it counted. He should be okay after getting a rest to think about it.

except that Clemson game
we were starting to pound the ball late in the game. His fumble was a major momentum killer. He needs to get this problem fixed. Maybe he can’t fix it. Some guys have small hands.
tiki barber had this problem
Thompson needs to carry the ball higher to maintain control.
I always thought...
Thompson had a problem holding onto the ball. He may be explosive when playing in space but, given his size, Jimbo’s decision to use him in several short yardage situations last year was baffling- especially since he seemed to have trouble holding onto the ball (and apparently still does).
+1 me too. I knew he was a great RB but he does not protect the ball very well yet.
They need to make him do those fumble drills and walk with the ball in his hands 24/7. Remember when Thompson fumbled in the JSU game last year & almost cost us the game?

Somebody was joking about small hands,
but that could actually be a serious consideration. He dropped it at a high clip last year, and if he has continued to do so in practice, this might not bode well for the issue’s ultimate resolution.
On the positive side, this is one of the reasons why you close practice. if a guy is having some problems with this, the last thing you want to do is put this out into the media spotlight. Then that ball carrier becomes a target, and you’ve got a Sammie Smith on your hands — a self-fulfilling prophecy, because people will start ripping at the ball and you WILL lose more possessions.
"I am not worried about the offensive line because in a year which FSU isn't likely to be a nationally relevant squad, the conference season is the most important. And I think the line will be fine by then"
Define “nationally relevant” in this context.
Does that mean we are not likely to challenge for the BCS championship?
In that case, I agree.
It comes off as yet another proclamation that we have no chance aginst Oklahoma.
In which case, I disagree.

I don’t think FSU will lose any non-conference games it isn’t expected to lose simply because of a banged up offensive line.

Bud I'm sorry for going off-topic but how do I delete a Blog membership off of my Blogs? I joined one to type one thing and can't figure out how to delete it now.

I dont think injuries are caused at a higher rate when you play a tougher schedule.

I think they are,
the more you have to leave your players in against quality opponents the more likely they are to get injured. Also the season wears on a lot of guys over the course of the season when playing a tough schedule. By the end of the year how beat up a team is for a school like Alabama or even FSU is a lot different than say, Boise St. Look at it like a boxer. As a 300 pound boxer would you rather go 12 rounds with another 300 pounder or a 260 pounder? Only in football it isn’t 12 rounds it is 12 games. It adds up.

If your point is that more snaps have a correlation with higher rate of injury, I agree
I just dont see any evidence associating quality opponents with high injury rates. Open to listen if you have support.
If there is an association, I would guess a more athletic lineman is less inclined to slipping and twisting an opponent’s knee, or a more agile defender tackles with more skill.
I think this has been discussed many times on TN. Couldnt find prior conversations on it though.

ahhh my bad, I see where I misspoke
I meant to say, injuries are caused at a higher rate when you play a tougher opponent.
It makes sense that 1st teamers would see more snaps in a tougher schedule, and the more snaps lead to more injuries.

I think the number of snaps has to do with it
but also just the physical wear and tear (not necessarily season ending injuries) on players that face physically gifted teams each week will be more drained than a good team in the WAC.

Keeping part of the line out
Is part of the new S&C program. Keeps our big guys from losing too much weight during fall camp. ; )

Are you as excited as I am about Werner?
I expect him to be contribute in every game, and I think he will see a lot more snaps then people think. He may be a Fr. but he’s like 30. By the time he’s done I think he will be one of the stars of this class.

Jermaine Thomas is back as the #1 RB it looks like.
Thompson imo is the better back but none of that matters if he can’t hold onto the ball
