7PM: Watch FSU Commit James Wilder Jr. & Plant HS Take On Bradenton Manatee
That's right. At 7pm FSU fans will be able to watch FSU commitment James Wilder Jr. take on Mike Blakely of Bradenton Manatee tonight at 7 on ESPN (yes, regular ESPN, not some other ESPN channel).
ESPN recently bumped wilder down a few spots in the rankings because of his choice to play running back and not linebacker (he's a better linebacker than a running back, but FSU wants him to be the 'Nole's feature back). It will be interesting to see how he runs tonight.

Flash, Dash, and Crash?
Remember how Deangelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart are Smash and Dash? How about the Pryor/Thompson/Wilder trio called Flash, Dash, and Crash (respectively)?
Tonight, we get to see Crash!!!!
He must be the second coming of Lawrence Taylor at LB
because he looks like an awesome RB.
Good block by Wilder on the opening play of the game
TD by Plant on a simple hitch

I'd like to see him run a little lower
He’s a little too upright, but what the hell, he just converted a 4th down with a 8 yard run, so what the hell do I know??
Wilder looks soft
just got smashed two plays in a row, offense and defense
Someone has to get him to go lower on O and D. He hits standing up. Maybe he's just too big for these kids.
by TampaLawNole on Aug 27, 2010 7:44 PM EDT reply actions
He's said in an interview before that he never really knew how to tackle people.
He just jumped on them and grabbed them and threw them down since he was bigger than everyone. He is not a defensive player imo. He just doesn’t have that knock the shit out of you mentality on defense. It’s odd because he doesn’t mind trucking people while on offense.

Ely unimpressive so far. One screen pass for TD but a lot of overthrown balls.
At 6’1 190 lbs I don’t get the Bama secret offer. I know Ely’s family and they are all bigtime Gators. Everyone in the family went to UF and his dad is a big booster. Pretty funny and everyone was shocked he went Bama but UF didn’t offer. Will be interesting.

guys are slipping all over the place…
Manatee is dominating the line
they are just waiting for Wilder to run, not afraid of the QB at all right now
hmmm...
Is he really that good, or is the plant o-line just weak?? He looks alot better than #139…..crap……can we go after Blakely???

Gotta ask, Is this guy overrated? First time seeing him and while Ely is out, Wilder is not showing much on either side.
Okay, I will give him that....what about the rest, his blocking has been atrocious and twice TDs have been scored after going right through him.
It just looks like the whole team is unprepared to play
they seem like they want to practice not play against a fired up team
How can you use his defense to say he's overrated.
Dude is an RB. His defensive prowess is of no concern to me. He made several good blocks on Plant’s field goal drive.

Ok, first off I asked if he was overrated and then pointed to his play as proof....I did not definitely state it.
I have watched him the whole game so far and he either misses his block or does very little to hold his block for any length of time. I saw two blocks on the FG drive that accomplished what they were supposed to do. From an elite athlete and prospect I would expect more in a half.
noles...off subject
what is the deal with FSU trying to force southeast high to stop using the name noles? They have been using that same name and logo since I was in high-school in the early 80s……are we really afraid of losing marketing to a high school??
Would seem to belong in the off-topic discussion thread
Shot a Gator in Jean Shorts just to watch him die.
i dont think we should overreact
plants oline and dline are getting dominated and all the defense for manatee has to do is focus on wilder. ive seen wilder in a couple other games and he is as good as the hype but it all starts up front
if anything
i would question whether plant is seriously overrated as a team. they may have a couple high profile guys but this is the ultimate team sport so
over-rated...
they are defending state champs with a lot of returning players….I think they have 3 out of last 4 state championships??
by Mellocello63 on Aug 27, 2010 8:24 PM EDT up reply actions
i get all that
and i understand its one game but they sure arent playing like #2 in the nation. thats what i mean by over rated. i dont mean that they arent the favorite to win states. As i said it starts up front and so far plants lines have been unimpressive
They're overrated.

Maybe size.
They had him at like 5’11" 193 on ESPN but he’s definitely NOT 5’11". Maybe 5’8-9". I didn’t think he looked near 190 either, but who knows. I think we wanted Beverly and then wanted to target a nationally elite RB as our 2nd RB. When those fell through we were too late for Blakely (if we even wanted him, and maybe he wasn’t interested in us for whatever reason). We found Freeman and made a big play for Wilder. While Blakely is a great athlete, I’m not sure I’d trade him for any of our backs for our offense. In a spread offense though I’d take him over any of our 3.

No, definitely wouldn't say he played "well" at RB but I wouldn't say he played poorly either.
I think the loss of your starting QB early on and the complete lack of any OL talent kind of makes analyzing Wilder as a RB in this game useless. He had a couple nice runs. Did have the fumble fighting for extra yardage (read somewhere that he didn’t fumble at all last season though?). And he was basically swarmed by multiple Manatee defenders in the backfield every time he got the ball.
Not an impressive showing on defense but if anyone’s watched his highlights you’d have known he is sometimes passive, his effort lacks on that side of the ball and his tackling isn’t textbook. But I don’t care either because he hopefully will be playing RB at FSU. There he had a few nice blocks on the outside. He is much more into the game and aggressive, as he’s willing to run through people and move the pile. He has decent cutting ability but I don’t think he maintains his speed well through cuts and his top end speed isn’t great by any means. Nor do I think either need to be great. But if his shuttle could be improved by a quarter second and his 40 by a tenth or two in his first 2-3 years at FSU it would go a long ways.
Just my non-expert breakdown of Wilder. Very good all around athlete but maybe doesn’t excel at any one thing.

Wilder
I’m a life long Nole fan from California. I try to follow the Florida schools the best i can. I was shocked by this game tonight. I’m sure Wilder will have better nights, but i had high expectations. He looks like a great power runner, but not speedy when he gets open. He had that good run late third quarter and went sideline instead of using his last block and cutting inside for a touchdown.
I know he will be good and he will have better nights, just was hoping for more!
And S and C
I went to school with 5 guys that went D1 and they all ate pizza before games and deviled crabs before practices. Ridiculous when I think about it now but its just high school.
by TampaLawNole on Aug 27, 2010 10:22 PM EDT up reply actions
I was hoping he'd have a hole or two to run through, which he didn't.
No one has called him a speed back. He’s a power back with good balance and tremendous “heart” running the ball (much less so on defense, imo). He needs to work on his vision and I’m sure his speed can be improved some, but I’m more concerned about short bursts than anything with a running back, which he could also work on.

I havent watched any game but this one that he has played in though so my opinion is based on this one performance to be fair.

The entire team
went to crap when their Alabama commit QB got folded like a lawn chair and knocked out of the game. The replacement was horrible.

It wasn't his best game (obviously).
Like I said, in film I’ve watched he’s frequently disinterested on defense. But much more into the game on offense. I think the fact that half the time he got the ball he was already being tackled wore on him. His team sucks. Seriously. No OL. No D. Not sure how you are nationally ranked when you’re that bad, let alone #2. And I’m not a proponent of trashing high school kids, but man that was a very poor showing. I don’t think Plant’s coaching staff did a great job helping matters either.

6.4 ypc against good competition and playing a position he is not that familiar with is great.

Wilder in last year's state championship game
I saw Wilder last year in the state finals when they beat Manatee – the Wilder I saw last year didn’t show up tonight. That was disappointing.

real game
This was not a scrimmage…this was a nationally televised game between two top teams…but i agree he didn’t have a lot of help and he has played much better on other days…Plant really looked unmotivated…
Uh, it was not a real game.
They even said as much on the broadcast.

the first game of the year in Florida (for every team) is a kickoff classic/preseason game
it didn’t count
yes it was on tv, but the coaches are thinking long term for the season, I’m betting that the Plant coach didn’t open the whole play book, but left in the starting QB so he could be on tv and to try and make the score respectable

Oh crap! Two college students arrested for drinking?
I hope that doesn’t happen at FSU!
Glass house my friend… Glass house…
for me, it's not the drinking, it's the fact that he was dumb enough to get arrested for it.
I drank my butt off in school, but I never got caught. Apparently Elam was just hanging out in a parking lot boozing it up? Stupid.
They probably stashed the hard drugs

this is what hype does
Build up your hopes and then let you down. This kid will be a good player someday but right now is just a superstar name.
I know Wilder's line is to blame, but he still
didn’t look very impressive on D, either. He didn’t look very aggressive
I Agree!
He is a physical specimen no doubt but where is the motor or RB footwork on this kid? He looked like he would rather fail and look like he didnt put forth effort than fail and compete. His footwork as an RB doesnt exist. He just uses size to blast through people. disappointing….

It was meant to be. Elam has officially become part of Urban Meyer’s arrest track record.
STATS
Wilder: 15 Carries for 87 yards – 5.8 yds/play
Blakely: 14 Carries for 144 yards – 10.3 yds/play
Blakely minus the 89 yard fluke touchdown:
13 Carries for 55 yards – 3.9 yds/play

Then take out Wilder's garbage time run as well
And who had the much bigger impact on the game itself? Fluke touchdown? Unfortunately JWJ got bossed on that play and Plant was indeed blowing up the interior runs early in the game until Manatee adjusted and Blakely went off. But let the season play out instead of engaging in spin to make the FSU commit look better

minus Wilder's 28 yard garbage run
14 Carries for 57 yards – 4.2 yds/play
Even still, behind a MUCH worse Oline, Wilder performs more consistently.
by freshcollegeboy on Aug 28, 2010 10:50 AM EDT up reply actions
Neither o-line did s*** for the first quarter and a half
Blakely got most of his yards on his own. You can’t play the metric game when people have eyes. It was clear which back had the most impact in a 48-10 blowout. Wilder hardly “performed”
by westcoastnolefan on Aug 28, 2010 10:53 AM EDT up reply actions
And also Manatee adjusted to get MB7 the ball out on the edge where he could create
so it wasn’t as if his line was SO much better. And I believe Plant has a OT (Posada) commited to Michigan as well. Blakely’s first 10 runs netted 7 yards and his last 5 runs netted 153 after the playcalling adjustment. And it obviously woulda been worse had the game not gotten out of hand.
by westcoastnolefan on Aug 28, 2010 10:58 AM EDT up reply actions
so your saying now that Blakely performed beter because his coaches performed better.
would Wilder have performed better if the coaches called a better game?
You can’t say that Wilder “hardly performed” and then say the only reason Blakely shined was the coaching adjustments. I’m saying you have to give Wilder the benefit of the doubt here. He had worse coaching, worse blocking, played both ways almost the whole game, and still was more consistent if you take out both backs one outlier run.
Once again, ill take the bigger, more consistent back.
by freshcollegeboy on Aug 28, 2010 11:46 AM EDT up reply actions
I'm saying Blakely performed better because he's the better back, PERIOD!
You’re at the brink of being silly making such an asinine inquiry. Blakely has footwork and lateral quickness Wilder could only dream of owning. Still more consistent if you take out one “Outlier” run? Like I said, you’re at the point of being silly. The problem is you cannot take out the runs because both of them actually happened! Old folks who tried to hate on Jim Brown said the same type of things as well. And in a 48-10 shallacking on National TV one player had significantly more impact (MB accounting for four TD’s) than the other (JWJ). And lets keep it 100, if MB was the FSU recruit and JWJ was the one up for grabs between UF and Auburn you would’ve been ecstatic at last nights result and hardly engaging in such pointless spin.
by westcoastnolefan on Aug 28, 2010 6:28 PM EDT up reply actions
wow dude, chill out
The fact is, Blakely looked better.
The fact also also is, Blakely had the better team on the field regardless of who was the running back.
Now how about applying some common sense. Let me break it down for you SIMPLY.
1. I gave the stats of both players, took out the one long run Blakely had, and came to the conclusion that both players played about even, only the Wilder had a much worse offensive line weighing him down. I concluded that I would rather have Wilder.
You then said this:
Then take out Wilder’s garbage time run as well
2. I acknowledged your request, and still came to the conclusion that I would rather have Wilder.
You then said:
And also Manatee adjusted to get MB7 the ball out on the edge where he could create so it wasn’t as if his line was SO much better. And I believe Plant has a OT (Posada) commited to Michigan as well. Blakely’s first 10 runs netted 7 yards and his last 5 runs netted 153 after the playcalling adjustment.
To which I replied that if your statement is true, then it only emphasizes the fact that, if you put things on an even playing field, I would rather have Wilder.
Please, don’t antagonize me. I’m not some 13 year old who can’t think for himself, nor will I bend to your will because you think I’m “silly”.
We can agree to disagree if you must, but it seems for the most part that I am analyzing off of the numbers while you…what did you say? Oh yeah, You can’t play the metric game when people have eyes.
Get off TN if you can’t handle metrics.
by freshcollegeboy on Aug 28, 2010 8:09 PM EDT up reply actions
Metrics are fine when properly applied (Especially when viewing season long trends)
Your “metrics” are rudimentary at best (So don’t flatter yourself by making that last comment. KC Joyner will sleep easy tonight) and totally ignore the context of which player had the more tangible impact. You’re seeing things with extremely jaded eyes anyway, so having YOU “bend to MY will” is far from anything I wish to do.

Isn't comparing Wilder and Blakely apples to oranges?
One’s an all purpose back. The other is a power back. I’m not sure CJ Spiller would’ve even looked that much better than Wilder on that Plant team vs that Manatee team.

bad choice....
Wilder did not get run over, he simply went for the strip instead of wrapping up the runner. Even so, you can’t take away the run. He will learn to stop the runner first. But again , it means nothing to us, as he will be on offense, where he seems to care a little more. Really difficult to fault him for only averaging 5.8 ypc when he was running without blocking, or the threat of a pass for much of the time. If he was meeting the defense somewhere other that 4 yards behind the LOS, he might have seemed much more impressive. Put him behind our o-line, and let him have first contact with a linebacker at +3 yards, and see how he does. He was getting hit by multiple linemen in the backfield !!

QUESTIONABLE...
This kid is definitely on another level physically than anyone else out there but he seemed to lack a competitive edge. Its true that when your 1st string QB goes down the other team will focus on the run though. I just didnt see the natural footwork and motor from Wilder that I saw from Blakley. Wilder seemed to kind of lumber along. And does anyone else think he’s a little tall for RB? 6’2"? I think the most frustrating thing to me was that when things were going south it seemed like he was hanging his head and taking his foot off the throttle instead of competing even harder. Sometimes when kids realize they are failing in front of a crowd they think its better to look like they arent trying and failing rather than competing and failing. Thoughts anyone? Last note…I want to reiterate that I do believe losing the QB early hurt alot and also his O-line was a huge failure….I would have nothing negative to say about him if I felt like he really gave his all the whole game. Anyone who has followed this kid notice the absence of a competitive edge in other games>??
It did look that way to me as well.....maybe he was hurt? I dont know.
I can guarantee one thing though….. Gran will make sure he plays with the crud or someone else will surely earn playing time. In the end it’s one game and it would have been nice for him to ball out like we expected. We shall see what happens from here on out.

Jimbo wants football players
Wilder is not polished at any one position but he is a heck of an athlete and a good football player. Keep in mind last night was an exhibition game before the season opener. When the season is on the line Wilder seems to step up. With a little coaching and some direction I bet we will see his production ramp up.
Not really worried about his mindset.
If he doesn’t have the right attitude he won’t play at FSU. But if you’d read the comments here you’d have seen me say he frequently does not display the same aggressiveness on defense that he does on offense. He seems disinterested at times. But if you’ve seen ANY of his highlight film runs you’d know that’s just not the case on offense. He will drag an entire team of defenders 15 yards or just bulldoze through 5 of them. There’s a reason he wants to play RB in college…

I think Plant just had a wake up call
They had won something like 19 games in a row and 3 out of 4 state champs. They’ve been the toast of South Tampa and with that untouchable feeling and everyone kissing their ass for years. They went in to that game thinking we have Wilder and Ely and no one can beat us. They got out hustled and out coached. It was opening preseason and can happen to any team sitting on their high horse and Manatee had a chip on its shoulder from losing to Plant for the championship last year.

Wilder
He will be fine. I was definitely impressed with Blakley though…He reminded me a lot of Ryan Matthews, just doesn’t look as big.. Matthews played high school ball in my home town and would almost go untouched every time… Blakely’s lateral speed to the outside was very similar…
Matthews
I don’t know if he ended the season as the leading rusher, but he spent a large portion of the season leading the nation in rushing. They actually lined him up at QB and he would just run about 30-40 times a game out of the QB spot. He is a special player. He didn’t get a lot of coverage on the recruiting sites like a lot of these guys are. He was added, i think, at the beginning of his senior year as a 3 star.
I did watch the Grant game
Grant along with Concord De La Salle is a premier Northern California program.
