Driving For Improvement: The 19 ACC Scoring Drives FSU Cannot Allow Again: #'s 13-7
Over the next few days we will be looking for areas in which Florida State can improve in the 2010 season. Specifically, we are going to review 19 of the 43 scoring drives Florida State allowed in ACC play in order to highlight areas of potential improvement. Later in the Summer we will offer our estimations of how much Florida State's defense can improve. And the 88th-ranked defense has a lot of room for improvement. Last week, we looked at plays 19-14. Today we'll look back at drives 13-7.
Today's set of drives allowed all fall into a category. All were touchdown drives allowed by FSU during which the opponent averaged 13 yards per snap of the football. (Yes, the next set is worse but let's focus on today's set for now). To put it in perspective, if FSU played like this for an entire 66-play game, it would surrender 858 yards and 79 points.
#13 Boston College 80 yards on 7 plays. Yes, the same BC that had 55 total yards against Clemson.

Bud you're a F'cking Machine when it comes to FSU football and Football period!!!
FEAR THE SPEAR!!!!!!!!!
Yikes
The angle that k smith took on the Spiller clip, ouch. As soon as he planted that right foot to take away the out he was done. I know people make mistakes, but wow that was bad.
More importantly,
the QB had all day to allow the wheel route to develop. Spiller needed time to get to the side line before turning up field and engaging the jets….I don’t think theres a linebacker out there that had a chance on that play. The faults I see with that play were:
a) no pass rush
2) man coverage with a linebacker
d) no over the top support from safeties
Did you ever even play the game? I guarantee I can coach my Little League team to beat yours 10 times out of 10.

Yea it would
Spiller would have passed from a LB to whatever DB had that third of the field in Cover 3.

LB isolated vs faster back was not uncommon last year
4th quarter of the Miami game. K. Smith lined up wide vs either Cooper or James and got toasted for a touchdown. It happened right in front of me, I was sitting 5 rows up on about the 10 yard line. Before the snap I told my fiance to brace herself. I’m sure that there are plenty of other examples but on these 2 we really got burned.

That play against Miami...
was particularly disgusting.
I liked watching Lonnie Pryor do it for us a few times last year though.
Wow.....
I also will say what match-ups too: Remember that UM halfback catching a pass iso’ed on our LB for the easy score?
Man, that was a running kick to the onions type of sick feeling.

Several times last year I looked at the formation and thought:
Damn….I hope he drops that thing or its a TD..USF ran a play like 4 times to the slot guy that never went for less than 15yds…frustration that a non-football mind sees that with a coaching staff on D with combined bazillion years experience does not.

Good Lord!
I know how bad they were. I mean I watched all of the games, but to see it laid out in black and white like that – Ouch!
"Lock up your daughter, lock up your wife, lock up your back door, and run for your life" - Bon Scott
Luckily I do not remember to much of this
The more I watched, the more I drank. By the end of each game I was flat out drunk.
Will the new coaching staff be cutting down on the alarming amount of penalties
Because, new system or not, a personal foul is a personal foul. In other words, does anyone have any data on Mark Stoops’s history with regards to penalties? (I’ll begin researching now that I have arrived at the office) or how about for Fat Dilfer?

I don't think we have them specifically broken down by type!
This team will improve in '10... on its 16-16 conference record over the last 4 years.... after losing 20 games in the last 4 years... after having the 7th worst major-conference defense... after not even winning its own division in the ACC in the last 4.

Oh no, didn't mean that
I just meant total penalty yardage generally.
It’d be ridiculous to expect someone to have that kind breakdown of penalty yardage.

A study on penalty yardage accrued by different styles of defense would be extremely interesting
I would hypothesize that PA penalties would be down in a primarily zone scheme, but I’d love to see some research done on the subject.

Video (and that game) was painful to watch
Should first sentence read “2010” instead of “2011”?
It's just downright horrifying to see just how outschemed we were on 1st downs
1st down pass defense:

*conference rankings for conference games only
An 8-1 TD:INT ratio against?
1st down rush defense:

*conference rankings for conference games only
Almost double the median average gain.
FSU Defense 2010: Taking back 1st down.
Imagine CP7's stats if he had be given the luxury of playing against our D
He might be playing on Sundays right now.

I was in attendance in Boston and had a poor vantage point of Harris steam rolling Mangum. I haven’t seen a replay since. Is that clip available anywhere? Can’t find it.
I have it on my portable
Perhaps I can make a clip of it at some point.

LOL. Found it when I wasn't even looking for it. Love how things work out some times.

It’s a minute into the clip, assuming you’re a self-hating kid wearing all black like me.
I didn't see it on that clip.
But found it right here at the 1:06 mark. Pathetic.

Dear God....
I hate seeing that all over again. Has there ever been a worse scholarship player at FSU than Korey Mangum? At least Roger Williams could lay the wood from time to time.
