Driving For Improvement: The 19 ACC Scoring Drives FSU Cannot Allow Again: #'s 13-7

Over the next few days we will be looking for areas in which Florida State can improve in the 2010 season.  Specifically, we are going to review 19 of the 43 scoring drives Florida State allowed in ACC play in order to highlight areas of potential improvement.  Later in the Summer we will offer our estimations of how much Florida State's defense can improve.  And the 88th-ranked defense has a lot of room for improvement.  Last week, we looked at plays 19-14.  Today we'll look back at drives 13-7.

Today's set of drives allowed all fall into a category.  All were touchdown drives allowed by FSU during which the opponent averaged 13 yards per snap of the football.  (Yes, the next set is worse but let's focus on today's set for now).    To put it in perspective, if  FSU played like this for an entire 66-play game, it would surrender 858 yards and 79 points.

#13  Boston College 80 yards on 7 plays.  Yes, the same BC that had 55 total yards against Clemson.

Bc 1-10 at Bc20 Shinskie, D pass complete to Gunnell, R for 10 yards to the BC30, 1ST DOWN BC (Mangum, K).
Bc 1-10 at Bc30 Harris, M rush for 5 yards to the BC35 (Jenije, O).
Bc 2-5 at Bc35 Harris, M rush for 4 yards to the BC39 (Watson, D;White, M).
Bc 3-1 at Bc39 Shinskie, D pass complete to Larmond, Jr., C for 4 yards to the BC43, 1ST DOWN BC, out-of-bounds (Jenije, O).
Bc 1-10 at Bc43 Shinskie, D pass incomplete.
Bc 2-10 at Bc43 Shinskie, D pass incomplete (Reid, G).
Bc 3-10 at Bc43 Shinskie, D pass incomplete to Larmond, Jr., C, PENALTY FS pass interference 15 yards to the FS42, 1ST DOWN BC
Bc 1-10 at Fs42 Harris, M rush for 42 yards to the FS0, 1ST DOWN BC, TOUCHDOWN, clock 04:07.
Remember from the previous article how FSU failed to force any 2nd and 8+ or 3rd and 5+ situations?  Not here.  FSU forces two decent leverage downs, but then commits pass interference on 3rd and 10.  Next play BC with the long run.

#'s 12-7 inside... if you have the stomach.

Star-divide

#12  NC State 80 yards on 7 plays.
Ncs 1-10 at Ncs20 Baker,T. rush over left tackle for 3 yards to the NCS23 (McCray, M;Bradham, N), clock 11:30.
Ncs 2-7 at Ncs23 Wilson,R. sideline pass complete to Baker,T. for 12 yards to the NCS35, 1ST DOWN NCS, out-of-bounds, clock 11:07.
Ncs 1-10 at Ncs35 Baker,T. rush over left tackle for 5 yards to the NCS40 (Smith, K;Robinson, J), clock 10:33.
Ncs 2-5 at Ncs40 Wilson,R. sideline pass complete to Spencer,O. for 6 yards to the NCS46, 1ST DOWN NCS, out-of-bounds, clock 10:09.
Ncs 1-10 at Ncs46 Baker,T. rush left for 9 yards to the FS45 (McCray, M;Mangum, K), clock 09:32.
Ncs 2-1 at Fs45 Baker,T. rush up middle for 16 yards to the FS29, 1ST DOWN NCS (Robinson, J), clock 09:05.
Ncs 1-10 at Fs29 Wilson,R. middle pass complete to Bryan,G. for 29 yards to the FS0, 1ST DOWN NCS, TOUCHDOWN, clock 08:34.

This was pretty amazing.  6 of NC State's 7 plays went for 5+ yards.  That is decidedly not winning first down.

#11:  Clemson 73 yards on 6 plays.

Cu 1-10 at Cu27 Ellington, A rush for 1 yard to the CU28 (Watson, D;Smith, K).
Cu 2-9 at Cu28 Parker, K rush for 10 yards to the CU38, 1ST DOWN CU (Watson, D;Robinson, J).
Cu 1-10 at Cu38 Spiller, C rush for 13 yards to the FS49, 1ST DOWN CU (Bradham, N).
Cu 1-10 at Fs49 Ellington, A rush for 43 yards to the FS6, 1ST DOWN CU (Robinson, J).
Cu 1-G at Fs06 Spiller, C rush for 4 yards to the FS2 (Robinson, P).
Cu 2-G at Fs02 Parker, K pass complete to Barry, D for 2 yards to the FS0, TOUCHDOWN, clock 04:06.
FSU actually have itself a chance on this drive.  For one play.  The 'Noles stopped Clemson on 1st down, but then Clemson went to the automatic gainer of 2009 v. FSU (QB run).  Clemson ran 5 straight times on this drive for 71 yards, including the big gainer by Ellington as White, Watson, and Mangum missed gaps or took poor angles.

#10 Miami 61 yards on 6 plays
Um 1-10 at Um39 Harris, J. post pass complete to Benjamin, T. for 29 yards to the FS32, 1ST DOWN UM (Jenije, O;Robinson, P), clock 01:17.
Um 1-10 at Fs32 Cooper, G. rush up middle for 2 yards to the FS30 (Mangum, K), clock 00:45.
Um 2-8 at Fs30 Harris, J. deep pass incomplete to Benjamin, T. (Robinson, P), PENALTY FS pass interference (Robinson, P) 15 yards to the FS15, 1ST DOWN UM, NO PLAY, clock 00:11.
Um 1-10 at Fs15 Cooper, G. rush right for 13 yards to the FS2, 1ST DOWN UM, out-of-bounds (Carr, N), clock 00:02.
Um 1-G at Fs02 James, J. rush over left guard for 1 yard to the FS1 (Watson, D;Harris, M), clock 14:48.
Um 2-G at Fs01 James, J. rush over left guard for no gain to the FS1, PENALTY FS offside 0 yards to the FS1, NO PLAY.
Um 2-G at Fs01 Harris, J. rush quarterback sneak for 1 yard to the FS0, TOUCHDOWN, clock 13:43.
Just overall bad defense and again UM didn't even face a 3rd down.

#9:  NC State opens big, messes around, then scores.
Ncs 1-10 at Ncs20 Wilson,R. deep pass complete to Spencer,O. for 61 yards to the FS19, 1ST DOWN NCS, out-of-bounds (Robinson, J), clock 04:43.
Ncs 1-10 at Fs19 PENALTY NCS false start (Vermiglio,J.) 5 yards to the FS24.
Ncs 1-15 at Fs24 Eugene,J. rush left for loss of 7 yards to the FS31 (White, M), clock 03:42.
Ncs 2-22 at Fs31 PENALTY NCS false start (Vermiglio,J.) 5 yards to the FS36.
Ncs 2-27 at Fs36 Wilson,R. rush quarterback scramble for 14 yards to the FS22 (Bradham, N), PENALTY FS personal foul (Reid, G) 11 yards to the FS11, 1ST DOWN NCS, clock 02:42.
Ncs 1-10 at Fs11 1st and 10.
Ncs 1-10 at Fs11 Wilson,R. crossing pass incomplete to Bryan,G., clock 02:13.
Injured player for FSU is #95-McNeil.
Ncs 2-10 at Fs11 Wilson,R. middle pass complete to Bryan,G. for 4 yards to the FS7 (Robinson, J), clock 02:02.
Ncs 3-6 at Fs07 Wilson,R. crossing pass complete to Williams,Ja. for 7 yards to the FS0, 1ST DOWN NCS, TOUCHDOWN, clock 01:29.
FSU allows a 61-yard pass to open the drive and squanders some great field position.  An injury and two false starts stall the drive a bit before State throws it in on the only 3rd down of the game.

#8:  5 plays, 79 yards.
Wf 1-10 at Wf21 Adams, J rush left for 16 yards to the WF37, 1ST DOWN WF (McNeil, K).
Wf 1-10 at Wf37 Brown, D rush left for 12 yards to the WF49, 1ST DOWN WF (Robinson, J).
Wf 1-10 at Wf49 Skinner, R pass incomplete to Rinfrette, M (Watson, D).
Wf 2-10 at Wf49 Skinner, R crossing pass complete to Adams, J for 16 yards to the FS35, 1ST DOWN WF (Robinson, J), PENALTY FS personal foul (Mangum, K) 15 yards to the FS20, 1ST DOWN WF.
Wf 1-10 at Fs20 1st and 10.
Wf 1-10 at Fs20 Adams, J rush right for 20 yards to the FS0, 1ST DOWN WF, TOUCHDOWN, clock 02:12.
Wake didn't even face a 3rd down here and had 4 plays of 10+ yards.

#7:  The Spiller on K. Smith.   5 plays 80 yards.
Cu 1-10 at Cu20 Spiller, C rush for 8 yards to the CU28 (Bradham, N).
Cu 2-2 at Cu28 Spiller, C rush for 4 yards to the CU32, 1ST DOWN CU (Bradham, N).
Cu 1-10 at Cu32 Parker, K rush for 8 yards to the CU40 (Watson, D).
Cu 2-2 at Cu40 Harper, J rush for 2 yards to the CU42, 1ST DOWN CU (Watson, D).
Cu 1-10 at Cu42 Parker, K pass complete to Spiller, C for 58 yards to the FS0, 1ST DOWN CU, TOUCHDOWN, clock 11:31.
Clemson outplayed FSU for most of the game despite the early score, but this is the score that put the Tigers ahead.  Clemson faced zero negative leverage downs, gaining 8, 8, and 58 yards on each 1st down it saw (each resulting second down was positively leveraged in Clemson's favor.)

Yikes

The angle that k smith took on the Spiller clip, ouch. As soon as he planted that right foot to take away the out he was done. I know people make mistakes, but wow that was bad.

More importantly,

the QB had all day to allow the wheel route to develop. Spiller needed time to get to the side line before turning up field and engaging the jets….I don’t think theres a linebacker out there that had a chance on that play. The faults I see with that play were:

a) no pass rush
2) man coverage with a linebacker
d) no over the top support from safeties

Did you ever even play the game? I guarantee I can coach my Little League team to beat yours 10 times out of 10.

Would zone fix problems 2 & D ?

I pray for a pass rush this year.

Yea it would

Spiller would have passed from a LB to whatever DB had that third of the field in Cover 3.

LB isolated vs faster back was not uncommon last year

4th quarter of the Miami game. K. Smith lined up wide vs either Cooper or James and got toasted for a touchdown. It happened right in front of me, I was sitting 5 rows up on about the 10 yard line. Before the snap I told my fiance to brace herself. I’m sure that there are plenty of other examples but on these 2 we really got burned.

That play against Miami...

was particularly disgusting.

I liked watching Lonnie Pryor do it for us a few times last year though.

Wow.....

I also will say what match-ups too: Remember that UM halfback catching a pass iso’ed on our LB for the easy score?

Man, that was a running kick to the onions type of sick feeling.

Several times last year I looked at the formation and thought:

Damn….I hope he drops that thing or its a TD..USF ran a play like 4 times to the slot guy that never went for less than 15yds…frustration that a non-football mind sees that with a coaching staff on D with combined bazillion years experience does not.

Good Lord!

I know how bad they were. I mean I watched all of the games, but to see it laid out in black and white like that – Ouch!

Luckily I do not remember to much of this

The more I watched, the more I drank. By the end of each game I was flat out drunk.

Will the new coaching staff be cutting down on the alarming amount of penalties

Because, new system or not, a personal foul is a personal foul. In other words, does anyone have any data on Mark Stoops’s history with regards to penalties? (I’ll begin researching now that I have arrived at the office) or how about for Fat Dilfer?

I don't think we have them specifically broken down by type!

This team will improve in '10... on its 16-16 conference record over the last 4 years.... after losing 20 games in the last 4 years... after having the 7th worst major-conference defense... after not even winning its own division in the ACC in the last 4.

Oh no, didn't mean that

I just meant total penalty yardage generally.

It’d be ridiculous to expect someone to have that kind breakdown of penalty yardage.

A study on penalty yardage accrued by different styles of defense would be extremely interesting

I would hypothesize that PA penalties would be down in a primarily zone scheme, but I’d love to see some research done on the subject.

It's just downright horrifying to see just how outschemed we were on 1st downs

1st down pass defense:

*conference rankings for conference games only

An 8-1 TD:INT ratio against?

1st down rush defense:

*conference rankings for conference games only

Almost double the median average gain.

He might be playing on Sundays right now.

Masochistic request

I was in attendance in Boston and had a poor vantage point of Harris steam rolling Mangum. I haven’t seen a replay since. Is that clip available anywhere? Can’t find it.

I have it on my portable

Perhaps I can make a clip of it at some point.

But found it right here at the 1:06 mark. Pathetic.

Dear God....

I hate seeing that all over again. Has there ever been a worse scholarship player at FSU than Korey Mangum? At least Roger Williams could lay the wood from time to time.
