Werner?
Is he that good to already be second team or is this just further proof of the lack of defensive line recruiting in the past couple of years?
Both
He’s been impressive, but you’re also correct on the recruiting

How much difference a spring makes
I just looked back at the spring game draft…where Team Gold was declared victorious…
Team Garnet, if the judging were held today, would have won in a landslide.
Tell that to the walk-on Garnet expected to defend McDaniel...

The size matters sentiment couldn't be more correct
Toshman Stevens is behind Werner and Hicks. Both of those guys were about as raw as it gets. Hicks’s only offer was from Arkansas St, he barely played DE, rarely lifted weights in high school, and spent his first year on the scout team. Also, Werner is still new to the game of football.

Who would y'all like to see as our 3rd & long pass rush D-line?
Mines is:
DE Brandon Jenkins
DT DeMonte McAllister
DT Jacobbi McDaniel
DE Toshmon Stevens
Interchange J-Mac with Everette Dawkins.
Probably some 3-4
With Mister and Christian Jones too

I am surprised to see someobody surprised Werner is back up already
He is the biggest defensive end FSU has. He is 6-5 280, 285 lbs. When you look at our defensive end play last year if figures. It is only one scout but one scout pronounced Markus White undraftable. It is his year to prove them wrong.
How much is Bright benching these days? I hear he is an animal in the weight room?

Or does he have to sit out for a year?
Well that bites...
Just found the link to that story… tough luck for the kid. Oh well.

What's going on with B. Reed?
Strikes me as highly unlikely that he would get beat out by BOTH Smith and Haulstead — any off-the-field worries there?
Well he didn't get beat out by Smith
Smith plays the Z and Bert plays the X. Haulstead has the slight lead right now and Bert is gonna figure heavily. I have not heard anything bad about Bert off the field. Haulstead has more talent than Bert and apparently had a great camp.

Rees vs Haulsted
So if I have Bert Reed in a highly competitive college fantasy league, should I drop him and pick up Willie Haulstead or do you think Reed will take over the starting gig after a solid performance vs Samford?

What of Gehres?
He greyshirts, he redshirts, has a rep as a hands guy w/ good work ethic. He has good height and size. He has had time to learn the reads and the offense. Our offense is a percentage / possession passing game. I would just think that a guy who plays smart and doesn’t drop the ball would have some role.
If we were to include him and shaw, then we’re talking 6 deep at wr without even mentioning Green, Dent, or Haggins. I can accept that 4 of the guys will get the bulk of the receptions. Maybe I just like the idea of being deep and fresh and maybe running some no-huddle.
Think we’ll see some no-huddle in the middle of a game?
Belichek said the 2 most important things for a receiver are 1) get open and 2) catch the ball
I think he probably trusts Gehres to be a 5 or 6. Can we depend on him to threaten defenses? Unsure. Can we depend on him as a 4, 5, or 6? I’d say so based on the reports.
On another note, I do not like no huddle this year because we need to limit the number of plays our defense must face (lack of depth). Unless we no huddle and then stand at the line to kill clock.

Not to mention, the more we increase the sample size, the more we expose our defense to possibly gravitate toward their naturally lower ranking
But that’s just my hyper paranoia.

I just assumed a 10 lbs gain at every starting DL position and considered changes in LB to be negligable.
I agree about Demonte having another 10 lbs he can add.

some of them are already approaching max weight like J McDaniel and probably some of the young guys. Doesn’t mean they wont get stronger but you aren’t going to see 15 to 25 lb gains again.

so do you think guys like Jenkins are maxed out?
Cause I think we agree on the Dawkins/McCallister combo and Werner hasn’t really had time in the S&C program yet and I’ve seen you estimate him up over 280 at some point (decent amount of Markus White who is lighter than I hoped. I agree I might be overly optimistic about McDaniel’s ability to add weight.

I’m not sure. I guess I figured Werner 280, Jenkins 260, McDaniel 310, Dawkins or McCallister 290, Jones 240, Luc 250, Williams 240. That’s my optimistic guess.

Defensive Tackles
How much separates the starters from the backups talent wise? I think we have 4 guys that can be good to very good this season, especially with the added weight and improved health status.
Are these guys going to be rotated in and out a lot, to remain fresh, as many teams do? (Think Miami)
Big big big difference between the top 4 and the next 2
They will rotate as much as possible I’d say.
