FSU Fall Practice Report Day One
Please remember that this was only the first day of Fall camp. There was no hitting and the guys were not in pads, per NCAA rule.
"Everyone came out and wanted to work. Everyone went hard. We didn't have any loafing, which is ya know, kind of different than what it was before. We had guys who didn't always give 100%, ya know, and today guys went hard and it was hot, it was humid, and guys still worked." (Christian Ponder)
Here's the release from FSU as Florida State finished up its first day of Fall Camp.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Jimbo Fisher's Florida State football team hit the ground running - and throwing - at Thursday evening's practice, ushering in a new era of Seminoles football to start the 2010 preseason.
Fisher was greeted by a couple-dozen photographers chronicling the historic moment as he crossed under the arched entrance to the Al Dunlap Practice Fields. It marked the first time since August 1976 that the Seminoles began a preseason with a new head coach.
"It was a good moment, but you had to put it behind you and go coach," said Fisher.
In all, 103 Seminoles took the field in 90-degree heat, under cloudless skies for the session that ran just over two hours.
"Everyone was excited," said senior quarterback Christian Ponder, who lined up alongside nine returning starters on offense. "Everyone's ready to start the year off. There was a little anxiety in the beginning and it was a little warm, but guys pushed, worked hard and were excited. Finally the season has started. ... It's going to be a long camp but we're going to do a lot of work to get better."
Fisher set the tone for the new era during spring practice, which carried over throughout a rigorous offseason conditioning program. Thursday marked the first time the team could get a measure of the significant progress that was made.
"We finally got to put a helmet on; finally got to have the coaches yelling at you," said senior cornerback Ochuko Jenije. "It's kind of a reward. It's been a long time since the spring. We've worked very hard. I'm glad to be back out here."
Jenije praised the work of new strength & conditioning coach Vic Viloria and his expanded staff, for getting he and his teammates ready.
"Coach Vic came in very excited, ready to work every single day," Jenije said. "You can tell by the weight [gained] and the speed we have. ... In a way we picked up where we left off [in the spring] and in a way we took a couple steps in the process toward getting better. We've done our work in the offseason with our film work and our work out on the field."
Among the Seminoles on the field for the first time were members of Fisher's heralded signing class.
"I haven't seen them all summer," said Fisher, who talked excitedly about the newcomers. "I wouldn't throw any of them back. If our live-well was full, I'd get another live-well. I saw some things out there - energy level, ball skill (and) big guys changing direction."
While the highly-touted youngsters like Lamarcus Joyner, Christian Jones, Christian Green, Kenny Shaw, Will Tye and Darious Cummings, left a favorable initial presence, Fisher joked that they've still got plenty of room to grow.
"They had the normal jitters," said Fisher. "The young guys were running around. When they got to the drills, they knew what to do, they were just trying to find out where the drills were. The attitude was good and the work ethic was good. It was a pretty warm day and we handled it for the most part."
Ponder echoed Fisher's sentiment about the true freshmen.
"They were great," he said. "They got a lot of reps today and they took advantage of it. The thing that impressed me is that they all know what they're doing. They came in prepared and studied a lot during the summer and tried to catch up to where the older guys were. I was impressed."
Redshirt sophomore defensive end Everett Dawkins:
"It was a real good first day. You didn't have people sloughing around. There was a lot of excitement; a lot of people jumping around, chasing to the ball and getting their assignments right. It wasn't perfect but it was real good for a first day."
"All of the coaches were pumped up so the players were pumped up, too."
Senior All-American offensive guard Rodney Hudson:
"Everybody was excited to get back out here, work hard and get after a new season. It was good. Everybody was competing. We had a good summer in the weight room and we wanted to get back out here and perform."
Senior quarterback Christian Ponder:
"There's definitely a comfort level. I think having coach Fisher here on staff for three years it really made the transition a lot easier."
Senior cornerback Ochuko Jenije:
"The defense was excited, flying around to the ball to make an impression on the coaches. There were a lot of pbus [pass break-ups], interceptions and big plays."
Noteworthy:
Ponder connected on a couple perfectly thrown deep balls to sophomore wide receiver Rodney Smith during 7-on-7 drills...Freshman wide receivers Christian Green and Kenny Shaw and junior Bert Reed, and freshman tight end Will Tye, all left impressions with catches in traffic...Jenije, sophomore cornerback Greg Reid and junior safety Terrance Parks came up with hustling pass break-ups, while freshman safety Chad Abram collected an interception...Offensive tackles Antwane Greenlee and safety Avis Commack returned to action on the field after recovering from significant injuries...The Seminoles will practice again Friday at 6 p.m.
One interesting note here is that FSU listed Dawkins as a defensive end. Perhaps an intern was responsible for the mistake.
Jarmon Fortson had his knee drained a little while ago and that's probably why Rodney got so much run. In any case, Smith is tremendously talented.
Here are a couple of quotes from Fisher leads Florida State through preseason practice for first time as Seminoles head coach.
Fisher, meanwhile, remained active. He walked from position segment to position segment. In stifling heat and humidity, he attempted to keep the energy high. During his team's warm-up drills, Fisher talked about consistency and the importance of his players achieving it in all areas of their lives — the way they practice. The way they eat. The way they behave off the field.\
and-
At the entrance to the practice fields, Fisher had placed a sign for his players to walk by. It read: "Success is just a matter of attitude." He said he talked about that afterward when he gathered his players.
"Keep your attitude positive," Fisher said he told them. "Keep having fun in practice. And nobody outworks us."
Fisher's first day of preseason practice as the Seminoles' head coach had ended. He said he was pleased with the effort, the attitude, for a first day. His day wasn't over, though. He left the fields and walked back to his office.
"Yeah, we've got to watch some film," he said. "Because we've got meetings in the morning — we've got to get through it as a staff so we can watch it with the players tomorrow. So we've got to get a late night tonight."
Andrew Carter has video of coach Fisher.
Andrew Carter also has 5 video clips of the sights and sounds from the first practice.

The more I hear about Smith, the more excited I get.
Fortson better step it up, or watch that PT drop.

the way rodney played in spring didnt look fluke-ish, that wr position is gonna be lethal, nice mixture of size and speed in that corps.

Glen Stanley?
anyone know why Glen isnt/cant practice?
We addressed it in the fanshot below this
Probably academics. Stanley said he had the grades. Apparently there are complications or half-truths.
This team will improve in '10... on its 16-16 conference record over the last 4 years.... after losing 20 games in the last 4 years... after having the 7th worst major-conference defense... after not even winning its own division in the ACC in the last 4.

Thats not good
If we lose Nigel Carr for a few weeks it would be nice to have an experienced guy out there
Mister was apparently beating out Carr anyway.

This quote
We didn’t have any loafing, which is ya know, kind of different than what it was before. We had guys who didn’t always give 100%
I would expect something a little more PC from Ponder. And don’t get me wrong – I love to see it, and its something we all kinda knew, but thise seems to be a shot across the bow of former coaches and players at a time when it’s really not needed.
I still love you, CP.
I agree. It is in the past & time to let it be. Talk about how the guys gave 100% but do not bring up the past.
GO NOLES!!! SCALP EM!
As long as there is a "first time" for doing something the new way there will be observations about what those differences are.
Next ear it will go away. IMO not this year, so we just have to accept that.
"Don't bite your friends" - DJ Lancerock
I completely agree
I just think he could have been slightly more tactful about how things are being done. Talking about people half-a$$ing it in the past doesnt really serve much of a purpose. Talk about how this is the most intense practice ever, how its way harder than in the past, and people are giving way more effort this year. That would get the point across without the potentially pissing people off. If I was the reporter, my next question would be “who wasn’t giving 100% in the past, and why weren’t they?” Coming out and saying people were loafing before just wasn’t entirely necessary. Thats all I was trying to say. I dont think the comment is that bad. Just no need to go down that road.

He's still young. Sh*t happens...
Any any respected reporter who wants to continue to access FSU would be very dumb to ask “Who was loafing? Are they still here” blah blah blah"

The whole theme is that things have changed with the whole regime, he's just calling it like he sees it
He shouldn’t be made to tip-toe around obvious issues when asked a question on point.
Shot a Gator in Jean Shorts just to watch him die.
I just think he could have worded it a little better.
I think some of this stems from the frustration of what he dealt with the last few years re: Bowden’s coaching. I understand that, and think he has a right to be frustrated. I also like how he is subtly stating Jimbo is doing things way better than Bobby could have. I just think that as the face of the team, he should avoid saying things like players were loafing before. I know ultimately his message is a good one. I’m probably being nitpicky, and I want to reiterate that I personally love the message he’s delivering with this statement.
Also, I have no idea what he was asked to ellicit this response. Maybe I missed it.

i see what you mean...
but i think he is trying to illustrate just how different the atmosphere is now. players who weren’t totally committed before now are, something special is going on…

overly sensitive?
It was a valid comment about one of the reasons he’s excited. He could have made that same comment if the old staff was in place. He didn’t mention or call out the old coaches. If the players really wanted to criticize the old regime, there’s A LOT they could talk about. But they haven’t.

i think the question to ponder may have been...
“from a players’ perspective, how was today’s practice different from years past?”
Exactly.
Ponder wouldn’t just come out and say that. He was almost certainly answering a question.

Oh how the mighty have fallen
I knew Thomas was falling out of favor with Gran and Fisher, but I never would have thought he would fall to 3rd team. Excited to see how Thompson does.

I don't know if it was Thomas "falling out of favor"
as much as Thompson and Pryor excelling. They just strike me as “football players” and JT is just a running back.

"falling out of favor" might be the wrong wording
It was just obvious in the Spring that Thomas’s carries were becoming less frequent while Thompson picked up more reps. I have confidence in what Gran sees though and trust his decisions regarding running backs. Still it is surprising that Thomas is third team.

Some decent pics on rivals.
And the one of Luc and Bradham looks menacing. Imagine being the opposing offensive skill players looking at that if they’re ever on the field together.
Also Demps looks pretty punishing as well.

What's up with McMahon sporting the massive elbow brace, and Hudson with the knee wrap/brace?
I know OLs are always battered up, but c’mon…
Nah, none of the other OLs are braced.
Seems like McMahon may have had some work done this offseason, but didn’t know Rodney had any ailments. Hope it’s not the same injury from end of last season flaring up.
Commack was practicing?
or just on the field?
anyone know? Awesome news if so. I hope he can make progress as a S.
Noticed that pic too.
Didn’t look like he had any wraps/braces/etc., so looks like he may be close to healed up.
Commack was practicing at Saftey per Jimbo Fisher's interview... Seminoles.com
not sure which saftey I assume SS with his size.

Good stuff, Sabon -- was looking forward to your report.
No surprises on 1st team.
Bright and (C?) Jones on 2nd is a mild surprise.
Cummings at DT….? Slightly disappointing relative to G.A.M. needs.
We have a lot of talented players for M. Stoops to work with at DB. Have to think the kids that rise/stay at the top will be playing solid ball.
….and Hudson has to be grinning ear to ear with the LB units.
….and Hudson has to be grinning ear to ear with the LB units.
No kidding. That has to be one of the deepest and most talented LB units in the country
But nothing that the nation's top LB recruit should be intimidated by, right?
More than enough PT to go around ;)
Of the 6 LB we return next season (Carr and Stanley question marks), 5 of them are current freshmen.
And none of them will likely have ever started. That’s a favorable depth chart right? Seems like we may be taking 3 LB this cycle?
