Wide Receiver Jarmon Fortson Dismissed From Florida State

Jarmon Fortson, a starting receiver for the Florida State Seminoles has been dismissed from the program, multiple sources told TomahawkNation this morning.  Jimbo Fisher also confirmed the story.  Sources indicated that Fortson failed a drug test and that failed test, combined with multiple attitude and behavioral problems throughout his two years in Tallahassee, led to the dismissal.  This was not the result of a single failed drug test.  Credit to Chuck Oliver for first tweeting this one.

There are some around the program who feel a sense of relief with the move.  They think Fortson was a ticking time bomb and that he would have eventually made some bad headlines of a different sort.

Fortson caught 45 balls for 610 yards last season.  The talented but troubled receiver sometimes made spectacular catches but also lacked discipline and was not dependable, often dropping balls and running the wrong routes.  6'6" 222 lb Sophomore Rodney Smith, a four-star out of Miami will replace Fortson.  Smith had an impressive Spring and the coaches raved about the talented sophomore, but he will have to prove he can replace Fortson's production.

You don't get booted for one failed drug test.

Rumors abound of domestic violence but there was never a report.

This team will improve in '10... on its 16-16 conference record over the last 4 years.... after losing 20 games in the last 4 years... after having the 7th worst major-conference defense... after not even winning its own division in the ACC in the last 4.

Could be a hundred times.

I think ricobert1 makes a good point that a failed drug test could be an ace in the hole if they want to throw a player out who refuses to play ball (no pun intended). But if he was worth keeping around, I’d look the other way on the kid smoking pot, personally.

by paperjames on Aug 8, 2010 5:42 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Not that I'm aware.

And not that I’m an insider. But it seems we’d keep him around until next spring and then if he’s still a 3rd string type player we may ask him to look to transfer to make room for younger guys. He didn’t do anything near as bad as Carr, imo (and the fact that one was arrested for multiple felonies and Ed I wasn’t seems to bear that out).

Like Bud mentioned earlier, we’ll keep Carr on the team – but suspended indefinitely – until his charges play out. We’ll likely release him regardless, but the sooner you release him the bigger hit to the NCAA APR we take. Same reason we won’t ask Ed I (or any other underperformer to leave) in the fall. You ask them to do that in the spring/summer.

Make no mistake, Jimbo wouldn't pull the trigger if he thought he need Fortson...

Yes, he provided a tough, physical T.O. type WR, but with Reed and Easterling coming back (and looking good from reports) and the having Smith, Haulstead, Alexander, Green, and Dent in the rotation this year make this a pill easier to swallow…

by NaGaNole on Aug 8, 2010 12:01 PM EDT reply actions

That’s an interesting take. I like it. I’m really hoping the Carr and Fortson situations are just bad timing and this isn’t an indication of how quick Jimbo’s hook will be. Our competition in Gainesville seem to really bend over backwards to avoid cutting loose a talented player, so I want the same from us.

I completely agree, but didn't we just lose points with Fortson when this could have been handled differently...

Football is played with an oblong ball. Take your roundball and GTFO...

by NaGaNole on Aug 8, 2010 12:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Two different situations...

As far as we know, Fortson has had multiple team infractions (failed tests, etc). Jimbo has firsthand knowledge of those events. Carr on the other hand has criminal charges that Jimbo doesn’t have firsthand knowledge of. I don’t think Jimbo is protecting Carr anymore than he protected Fortson until he failed his 48th drug test.

by coonhound on Aug 8, 2010 12:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Carr is only still on the team because he can't be kicked off until his legal issue is settled.

I would not be surprised if there were other things about Carr that haven’t been made public.

>-----:----:------>Spearing 'em and Scalping 'em like it's 1999
I'm not so sure this Jimbo fella is the right man for the job.

by FrankDNole on Aug 8, 2010 12:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes, as we’re hearing now we had a walking crime spree starting at wide receiver. Seemingly few people outside the team knew that though, so there was no external pressure from the media or fans to get rid of Fortson. If the team had handled this a certain way, we could have suspended Fortson for the Samford game (or even done nothing at all) and there is probably no story at all here. So in that sense, it wasn’t his 8th strike.

Now maybe Fisher feels like the internal pressure (the need to look consistent about the rules, etc.) dictated letting him go. If that’s the case I just have to trust his judgment. In general though I want us to do everything we can to avoid actually kicking a guy off.

by 38Noles on Aug 8, 2010 12:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Carr a quick hook?

He was arrested for multiple felonies. It’s university policy (read: out of Fisher’s control) to suspend any and all players until the legal process has taken its due course.

I’m really just talking about the consensus on what will happen when his legal issues get resolved, which seems to be getting kicked off the team.

If he goes down for felonies, then it definitely wasn’t a quick hook.

If he pleads to misdemeanors and still gets kicked off the team, I would call it a quick hook. But it’s becoming clear that I’m way out of the mainstream when it comes to player discipline.

by 38Noles on Aug 8, 2010 1:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Even if it gets pleaded down

some were saying he was the primary suspect in several other car break ins and he had at least one prior arrest even before his car stuff. You’d tend to think there are a lot of other things that may have happened in school/on the team like with Fortson that we don’t know about.

Whether you agree with him getting kicked off the team or not is one thing. I wouldn’t have a problem with it. Not after his arrest record. But there’s no way you could call it a “quick hook”. That implies there were very few prior incidents, if any, and that the present incident was a minor one. None of those apply here.

And I didn’t know until just right now that Dez ended the season as OkSt’s 2nd best WR, statistically. Even after only playing three games. Now thats just funny.

First off, Kenny Shaw is not close to the same type of player Fortson was. Second off, you have to question Kenny Shaw’s bulk at this point. Green isn't ready yet

He’s got the highest ceiling though. Shaw’s route running is a major attribute rarely seen in Freshmen, and he’s been singled out in multiple practices for his ability. I could see him splitting time in the slot, especially against zone defense teams.

That's a great point about Green not being fully ready.

The only thing I’ll argue is that Jarmon Fortson played on pure potential his freshman year. Christian Green did plenty fine in the Army All-American game at WR, as well.

Personally, I think Haulstead will fill in nicely.

Even if Willie runs the correct routes and catches the catchable balls, its a wash IMO.

Jarmon caught some big balls, but I think with confidence, WH can offset this loss.

at least we got a wide variety of young recievers

We’ll have enough options out there (and versatile options too). We have a good size matchup guy in smith, a few burners, a few possession guys.

We also have a talented running game.

This hurts because he was our “how the heck did he catch that?” guy. A lot of players are going to salivate at the chance to take his snaps though.

only made those catches after he had his "How the hell did he drop that?"

i will give Fortson credit for some great acrobatic plays, but please do not forget that this is the guy who dropped 2 in the end zone that would have beat miami, and that throughout the season CP7 would plug him in the #’s just to see it hit the ground at LEAST once a game, (every time i can remember he was across a 1st down marker)

Definitely not..

Sky is definitely not falling…. We’re built for depth .. No longer the “we’re just one playmaker away” strategy. It’s about depth and not having “the man” at any position, but having “men” all over. We’re recruiting that way and we’re putting a plan in place that’s about having a program rather than a team. Teams rely on one or two star players, programs have depth and consistency.

Its unfortunate, but the program is going to be beyond fine.

One small step for a man...

But one giant leap for the FSU program. No one on this message board deserves to employ the double standard that the UF fans seem to use. We cannot be on the message boards telling Fisher to “set the example and set it strongly from the start” when talking about Carr and then come out and whine about Fortson being kicked off. Both people are cancers to the team that needed to be cut out. There is enough talent to catch the ball and Ponder has already said he loves the WR as a whole so I fear not for a slip in production.

99% of people see NoVa as a loudmouth idiot. I will not contend that he is not, but the 1% that isn’t loves FSU and would run through a brick wall with his head lowered for them.

Some people really got into it. You’ll probably see people make seemingly random mentions of “heart” or the like if you haven’t already.
