Florida State's First Fall Practice In Pads
Release from FSU:
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Clear skies and soaring temps greeted the Florida State football team Monday afternoon as the Seminoles dressed in full pads for the first time this preseason.
There was very little difference from how the Seminoles worked in shells - shoulder pads and helmets - as head coach Jimbo Fisher has taken a page from the NFL playbook, stressing to the players the importance of staying on their feet. It's just one of the ways Fisher is trying to limit injury.
This is actually a change Fisher implemented in the Spring.
Yet it's not the only area where the Seminoles' camp resembles those in the NFL. Cross-training - preparing players for action at multiple positions - is also very much the norm at some position segments. That's especially true in the offensive backfield, secondary, linebacker and receiver, where learning multiple positions benefits all parties.
Sophomore back Lonnie Pryor is a prime example. A heralded tailback recruit out of high school, Pryor split time between his natural position and fullback. It wasn't an easy sell at first, but Pryor flourished as a freshman, combining for 288 rushing and receiving yards and five touchdowns in the dual role.
"Once he had it explained to him and had the details of it, he was good," Fisher said of Pryor. "He's the same style of player that (former Seminole) Edgar Bennett was (at) 215-218 pounds. Whether he was a true tailback or a true fullback, I don't know, but he was a heckuva football player.
"He [Pryor] is that style of player and you've got to get him on the field."
Redshirt sophomore Debrale Smiley, who rushed for more than 2,000 yards as a power high school tailback, has spent more time at fullback since arriving on campus in January. He is also getting work in FSU's one-back set. Essentially, the Seminoles are getting two players from one and building depth in the process.
Likewise, senior cornerback Ochuko Jenije, who led the team in interceptions as a starter last season, is getting considerable work at one of the safety positions. Across the board, linebackers coach Greg Hudson is cross-training his players for multiple slots.
"Coach Hudson told the linebackers we must learn a different position," said senior middle linebacker Kendall Smith. "It's all about helping each other out because it's a long season and people get banged and bruised up. By learning a different position, all you're doing is bettering yourself and your team."
Smith said he expects to get work at weakside linebacker, while weakside starter Nigel Bradham will get reps in the middle and strongside linebacker Mister Alexander will also work at the weakside spot.
"If you understand your position and another position, pretty soon you understand the whole defense," Smith added.
The same holds true at wide receiver, where learning the X, Y and Z positions enhances opportunities and enables the coaching staff to exploit potential mismatches from a variety of different sets.
Fisher is a big proponent of playing his best players and the ability to master two spots allows him that opportunity.
"That's all you want," Fisher said. "You have to tell them what's in it for them and what's in it for the team. Lonnie is a great team guy. He thinks team and plays team. When he gets his individual opportunities, he does it. Our job is to get the best players on the field."
And Fisher has been extremely happy with how the players have embraced the concept in an effort to build a championship team.
"Our guys, when we've moved them around and bounced them around, they've been very receptive," said Fisher, who said he won't force a player to move if it's against his wishes. "You have to sit and explain it to them. ..."That's how you win. Look at the NFL... It has become a very personnel specific game at times. We've got to find out what guys are capable of learning and what their abilities are. The only way to do that is put them in that position."
I don't have anything to say here except that this move might allow the 'Noles to insert its best backup at any of his possible positions. For instance, if Vince Williams is FSU's best non-starting linebacker, and he learns to play middle and outside linebacker, instead of just one spot, FSU could use him at either instead of turning to a lesser player.
Jenkins finding comfort zone
Sophomore defensive end Brandon Jenkins has add 16 pounds of muscle to his 6-foot-3 frame since last fall. A play-maker throughout the spring, Jenkins is hoping to parlay the added size and strength into a more productive season after registering three tackles for loss as a reserve in 2009.
"I feel a lot more comfortable," said Jenkins, who is pushing to start opposite senior Markus White. "We have got a lot of new plays. I feel like I am more free than I was last year and I am just letting it all lose this year. We didn't get to the quarterback much last year, so this year I am going to try to get to the quarterback a lot more."
So far, Jenkins has been holding up his end of the deal and can attest that size does matter when playing on the defensive front.
"Going against 300-pound offensive lineman, you can't go at 230 when you really come down to it," said Jenkins, who now tips the scales at 250 pounds. "I feel a lot stronger and a lot more confident. My goal is to be 255 by the start of the season. It's really hot outside though, and I lose a couple pounds after each practice, so during breakfast, lunch, and dinner I am trying to eat as much as I can."
Jenkins is the one guy out there who reminds observers of a young Everette Brown. 'Nole fans have to be encouraged with his work in the weight room. Hopefully he can play the run well enough to help the defense force negative leverage situations for the offense, in which he can flash his pass rush skills.
After dropping in on the coaching staff earlier in the day, former defensive coordinator Mickey Andrews spent a good portion of Monday's practice observing. "It was great to see Mickey out there today. He's a great guy and a good friend," said Fisher. "It's great to see him anytime we can see him."...DT Moses McCray (left knee) and RB Tavares Pressley (right knee) under MRI examinations Monday...OG David Spurlock was held out of practice for precautionary measures...The Seminoles added two walk-ons to the active roster Monday - redshirt freshman TE Jonathan Wallace (Jacksonville Lee) and freshman tailback Jordan Stanley (FAMU DRS). Walk-on OL Trevor Lally left the team voluntarily, which puts FSU at the 105-player preseason roster limit...Florida State will hold its first two-a-day practice Tuesday. The Seminoles are scheduled to go at 9:30 a.m. for the first session and come back for a 6 p.m. workout.
Seeing Mickey Andrews out at practice is awesome. Truly a great Seminole.
As for Moses McCray, if there is any chance his knee injury is serious (and at this point I don't know), why not hold him out until the Miami game or the game before against UVA? FSU isn't going to need him against Samford, isn't likely to beat Oklahoma, probably won't need him against BYU, and playing against Wake Forest with their chop blocks is a terrible idea for a guy with a knee issue. Blake Snider filled in for Spurlock.
Andrew Carter with some news on Damien Jacobs, the 2010 signee at DT:
-Jimbo Fisher said Damien Jacobs, the defensive lineman who was a part of the Seminoles' incoming freshmen class, is likely headed to junior college. Specifically, the East Mississippi Community College. Sounded like Fisher expects Jacobs to go there for one year and then return to Florida State. Fisher favored that plan for a couple reasons. For one, obviously, it will allow Jacobs to bring up his grades. Mainly, though, Fisher believes junior college would help Jacobs given that he's already behind at FSU. Going there would allow him to get back in shape and get back on track.
Jacobs was not expected to be a significant contributor this year and the last time he talked to TN he told us he was likely to make it in after finishing up a late summer class. Can a player go to a JUCO and enter FSU after only a single year, as Carter suggests? Perhaps EMCC has some sort of single-year prep program? We'll try to get an answer on that from someone in admissions.

Gotta disagree with you on this one Bud
Beating Oklahoma would give huge momentum to the program and could seriously propel us for the rest of the season and also be huge for recruiting. Not to mention I want to beat the crap out of them for a 13-2 shalacking back in 2000 (remember that? still stings for me). Now this is assuming the injury is somewhat minor and he is full cleared to go. I agree with Samford but Not OK. C’mon Bud! Where is teh SEMINOLE fight in you?!? =D

Which side would McCray be lined up on?
How’s the inside of the OU line? It looks like either JMac or McCray would be lined up against a true soph, although he looks like a big kid

Not saying I disagree with you on our chances against them
But your reasoning can’t be that it would give us momentum or because they handed us our lunch when most of our players weren’t even teenagers. This is exactly what people are getting upset over, not backing your argument up with anything, and trying to convince people your right.

Another benefit of cross-training
Guys will be more confident in their primary position. I really like this strategy.
When I was in high school I used to work at Publix.
First I was a bagger, and then later I became a cashier. Sometimes when I was walking through the store, customers would stop me and ask me to check in the back to see if there was more of something that appeared to be empty on the shelves. I never knew how to find out the answer on my own – that was the job of the stock clerks. I always thought that Publix would have much more knowledgeable and well rounded employees if they cross trained their employees to learn how bag, cashier, stock, etc.
Seems to be a bit of a parallel here. I think the key is making sure that the players truly master their primary position. Learning how other surrounding positions function can certainly help that. I have faith in Jimbo that he’ll make sure they are sound in their primary roles. Plus imagine the possibilities for our depth! As stated here by Jimbo, this will allow us to always field our best players. If done right, this will be a great strategy!
Jimbo isn't as advanced a coach as we thought
he has definetly got to get tuned into having his players work at Publix during the offseason. :)

Cross Training is a great Continuity of Operations strategy.
If you assume that risk is a product of threat and impact, then to minimize the overall risk of injuries (or weed-loving WRs) you must reduce threat and/or impact.
Threat is harder to reduce than impact, but its possible. You can train better, change the way you practice (i.e. no hard hits), ensure you have a solid playing surface at home.
Impact, however is something easier to manage. Cross training is the biggest means to mitigate against impact. If your OL has 4 good tackles, 3 good centers, but just 2 good guards, your #2 tackles and center need to know how to play guards. Same with the LBs.
isn't cross training FSU defenders too much to ask?

JUCO
Can a player go to a JUCO and enter FSU after only a single year, as Carter suggests?
Carter may be suggesting one of two things:
1) Jacobs would be expected to complete his AA in three semesters (fall, spring, summer)
B) Jacobs would transfer without completing his AA.
If Jacobs played this fall at EMCC, then transferred, he’d have to sit as a sophomore (transfer year) and then have three years to play three. That would be not unlike Smiley and McCloud, except they sat the year at JUCO. At least if Jacobs did that, he’d be at the FSU training table and have access to the trainers. He could even contribute on the scout team defense.

RE: JUCO
This is how I understand it, and I’m pretty sure this is right.
Jacobs took a late summer course to finish up all his requirements to graduate high school. Due the nature and timing of the course, the super-slow NCAA Clearing house is taking forever to process the papers and documentation. Both Jacobs and Fisher believe that at the end of the day he will in fact be cleared, but by the time that happens, he will already have missed a ton of pre-season camp.
Instead of waiting for him to be cleared and getting a late start, they have decided that the best route is basically to grayshirt him. The plan is he’s not gonna play any football at East Mississippi. He’s just gonna get a head start on some college courses while he’s waiting. (Always better to keep these guys busy and out of trouble. Idleness is not a good option for these guys.. or anyone for that matter really).
If he ends of not clearing then he has a head start on his AA at EMCC.
He he clears, he has no need to “fix his grades”, and he enrolls at FSU in the spring and has all four years of eligibility (basically he’ll be like an EE for the next incoming class).
Hope that clears it up.

why send a kid all the way to Mississippi?
Any connection to EMCC. I mean, why not just enroll at TCC?
A couple reasons might be in play.
First, he might be able to get in-state tuition in an adjoining state (MS-LA). Do not know if CC’s grant scholly’s to football players — ?
Second, we might want him to stay involved in football to keep up training and development. TCC obviously doesn’t have a program.
Last, our coaches have contacts with other coaches at certain CC’s that will protect our interests, to some degree.
To extrapolate on arrdub's #2.
If he doesn’t get the grads to enroll in January, he’ll already have a headstart at a juco where he already has some courses under his belt AND can join a football program. There aren’t many states that have juco’s with football programs.

For me and Oklahoma it’s a wait and see type of thing… if we are winning or close by the 3rd then bring him in IF needed but if we are getting blown out let him stay on the sidelines no need to take a chance on getting hurt again or further injuring himself.

It was really only a sentence.
This OU game is fairly common sense. Oklahoma is a 13-point favorite. They are favored to beat us like we are favored to beat BYU. One of the reasons people flock here is because they are tired of the kool-aid spewed by some of the subscription sites. If nothing else we try to be objective.

It's being realistic.
Our guys look a lot better, and they’re learning a new defense that will get them to where they need to go, but you have to be patient. They still have a way to go. Setting expectations of beating a potential NC contender like OU in the first year is almost undoubtedly going to lead to disappointment for you.
They might beat OU, and nobody will be happier to be wrong than me if they do. It’s just not very likely, especially given how early in the season the game comes.

Am I the only one who is scratching his head about Jacobs?
I’m probably misunderstanding this situation. Did he not qualify for FSU and has to go the the Juco route or he will qualify but it will take a while? If he enrolls in a JUCO as far as I know his eligibility clock starts anyway. If that’s the case then the JUCO route doesn’t make as much sense. He would get in much better shape on campus versus a JUCO. Does it seem like Jimbo has simply soured on him?
At the very minimum, he is having some qualifying issue
and has to register for JUCO in case he doesn’t make it in to FSU. The ultimate goal here is to avoid him balooning to like 400 lbs as unchecked defensive tackles are want to do.

I’m not privvy to the scholarship number, but if the scholarship number is less than the allowed, we could always accept a kid. Assuming we don’t have Fortson, Jacobs or Stanley right now, I’d assume we’re under the scholarship limit and could ask a walk on to “leave”.

Cross-training worked well for the New England Patriots
Injuries happen and versatile personnel make a big difference.
I never played a single down of football, but I played basketball. Most coaches want you to be able to play multiple positions. You get a better understanding of the overall game that way. Also, you are a step ahead in many ways because in the back of your mind you know where your teammates will be. I’m assuming it’s similar in football.
I sort of agree about Moses.
If the injury is anything serious, it doesn’t make sense to rush him back.
If he's on the bike, it's not serious
I still think they are going to be careful with Moses. He’s been hurt throughout his career and elbows get stressed on the DLine. I would rather have him healthy and limited 10-15 snaps a game then playing hurt at 20-25.

What would be better for the team over all playing one ore two games and out for the season or out 4 games and playing the ACC games. If we could make a run for the NC without him then I could say let him play but we need him healthy I think and I want to win the ACC. We dont have to have him back right off the bat so let him heal.
Seeing MA makes me smile. Its nice to hear hes there because I know he cares about the team. Where is the others at. though he wouldnt change at lease he cares.
I love the idea that Key positions are learning others spots. This will be good because in some games we can match up WR with CB for a mismatch. It makes teams have to scout them at each position and makes Def have to do more work because they are going to run dif plays for the most part but at the same time can run the same as the others. Its x2 the work when you have Easterling running routs vs Reed vs Greene.
Why is the sky blue? Because, God Loves the Infantry
Des that's a good point about the scouting

I think the best bang for other defenses' buck
is to sit in a Cover 3, mix in some exchange zone blitzes (e.g., DE drops back to defend the curl, LB blitzes in his stead), hope you can stop the run with 8 in the box, and try to force underneath stuff and thus long drives, thereby maximizing opportunities for mistakes/turnovers (e.g., tipped passes off receivers’ hands).
Of course, the downside to this is if FSU executes well, FSU scores every drive, eats up the clock, and wears out your defense.

Hopefully Stoops takes advantage of the opportunity to bend Mickey's ear
I still think about how Allen never spoke to Gladden when he eat lunch in the building everyday. This staff seems to be completely different, I would not be surprised if Stoops and company spoke with Andrews at length. Andrews last defense wasn’t great but the guy knows his technique and still has a lot to offer. Having guys like Gladden and Andrews is incredible advantage. You can’t have enough HOFs around the program.
FSU football is the new case study for the outliners phenomon
I'm going to assume that if they are cross training on defense
Then the guys are doing a pretty good job picking up the new stuff they’re learning. I’d think they’d wait on that if the team was really struggling with the new playbook.
Call me crazy
but one of the statements in bold really stood out.
“If you understand your position and another position, pretty soon you understand the whole defense,” Smith added.
Next to having your best players ready for another position in case of injuries, this is the best reason for cross training your guys. Learn your spot, learn others spots and you get a real grasp of what is happening with defensive schemes.

This team is going to make waves
This year. With or without (but especially with) the win at Oklahoma. As much as I’d like yo drink the Kool-Aid on that game, we have no better than a 40% chance at that one. But this team is doing all the right things. I love hearing more details about the cross-training. It’s simple but genius. We’re preparing in the right way for an ACC Championship run…

" FSU isn't going to need him against Samford, isn't likely to beat Oklahoma"
If its not pessimistic – Its not bud Elloitt
Hate lines like this
It's absolutely true
Spin it anyway you want, but we’re not likely to beat Oklahoma, especially on the road. Oklahoma might be the best team in the nation this season.
"Isn't likely"
doens’t mean FSU sucks.
It means, OU should have an elite team this year, and FSU is getting there but isn’t there yet. It “isn’t likely”. How is that so bad?
If you asked Bud, “hey, who do you want to win the OU/FSU game?” what do you think his answer will be? Of course, FSU.
He’s trying to bring people back down to earth, so we’re not completely crushed when we don’t “run-the-table”.
I can see it now if FSU beat OU....
LETSGONOLES will be the 1st to let you know…….
