UNC's Marvin Austin suspended indefinitely
The surprise of this announcement was not Austin's suspension -- his name has been reported repeatedly as a prime target of the NCAA's investigation into improper contact with agents. The surprise was that this suspension has nothing to with with the NCAA's investigation (academic or agent-related.)

In that video Butch Davis looks like a man beaten before the season has even started.

To me, he looks like a guy who knows what is coming...
He dodges some of the questions verbally, but he doesn’t have the appearance of a coach who truly believes “none of this will matter”…
I don’t think they’d be horrific without Austin (how many games does a single great DT win for you? 2, maybe 3?), but from what is said, and not said, I suspect more is coming.
To be clear, I anticipate posting some negative comments on UNC as this unfolds. I don’t know anything special. I’m pretty much a football moron with an internet connection. But, I foolishly thought that UNC’s rise over the past 4 years was due to good coaching and recruiting. I admire good coaching and recruiting. At one point, I even told a friend of mine that I though ND should hire Butch Davis… As I learn more, it seems that it is more likely that it’s just a dirty program. I don’t think that the top brass at UNC want it to be a place labelled as dirty.

Popular course at UNC right now
So just Austin?
I thought there were supposedly other guys involved.
I guess if he is the only loss they might still have a chance against LSU, but the whole distraction thing does not help. SEC gets lucky again!
There are many more invovled.
This is like just the tip of the ice burg. Who knows, maybe The Hat will have that psychotic meltdown that is inevitably on the way and will call for quick kicks on 3rd down every offensive series.
Not an alcoholic, just an FSU grad.
I think the suspension happened because you dont want to play this kid and have the NCAA then come back later and take away your wins because you used an ineligeble player.
I am sure he is dirty but its just like NCAA to drag their feet and not come down with a verdict thus leaving UNC in big time limbo.
Just got the espn txt.
Says they could be without up to 16 players against LSU.

Jaw dropping figure. Rumors would suggest most of these are starters/contributors, too.
What sucks is they are going to pull a VT and get curb-stomped out of conference, but have the potential to come back with closer to a full roster and do well before our game.
For the folks implicated in the academic scandal, a half season suspension would be more than our guys served (1/3 season?), and would have them back on the field prior to coming to Doak.
The players involved with the agents are toast. They lost their amateur status there. You can't get it back.
The players who used the tutor may return this season, like you mentioned.
UNC is asking the NCAA for “rolling suspensions” so they can do something like suspend 4 guys for the first 4 games, 4 the 2nd 4, 4 the 3rd 4 and 4 the final 4 games of the season. RIDICULOUS! All of our guys were suspended at the same time.

"Correct, Sir Trick."
Thanks for the clarification.
I believe I’ve seen where players have served a penalty and had their amatuer status reinstated; though I cannot point to a specific example. In any event, I thought we’d seen somewhere that they would be able to limit the agent damage to Austin?
With regards to rolling punishments, UNC is a cash cow for the NCAA in basketball, so we’ll see how that works out…. I’d imagine we’re going to see something less severe than we might expect. They don’t appear to be stonewalling the NCAA a la USC so perhaps that helps their case as well.
