2011 Recruiting Discussion Thread #11
Welcome to the recruiting discussion thread. Please refer to the Recruiting Board for information on prospects. We are asking readers comment here instead of the recruiting board so that the recruiting board will load quicker. Feel free to talk recruiting news, rumor, information, etc. Amateurs and experts are all welcome. No question is too simple. Have a projected class? That's fine as well.
Once this thread fills up, we will start a new one.
Also, please don't fish for information from subscription websites. Violators will be banned from this thread.
Notes:
- James Wilder commits 08.14.10 Removed Nick Waisome 08.14.10
- Arrington Jenkins added. 08.29.10.
-
2012 DT Dalvon Stuckey to FSU. 09.11.10.
FAQ:
1. Will FSU take 2 WRs now instead of just Rashad Greene?
This is more likely with the dismissal of Jarmon Fortson. FSU is loaded at wide receiver and doesn't need to take another. FSU could have as many as 13 wide receivers in 2011. That's more than optimal and is not a good use of finite resources (85scholarships). However, this answer likely depends on the future of Taiwan Easterling (baseball, but when?) and Cam Wade (don't see many non-contributing 5th-year seniors on the roster). The coaches will be in the best position to determine this, and we are not going to second guess their move here.
2. What's up w/ Tony Steward?
This is a Clemson-FSU battle. Clemson is in desperate need of linebackers because its current crop lacks both quality and numbers. Plus, Steward's idol is Ernie Sims, who was coached by Clemson LB coach Kevin Steele. Steward named Clemson his leader following the camp. Despite this, we are confident in FSU's position with him. Steward is very respectful and has said good things about every school he visits. Clemson will be an underdog in 4-5 games this season and it would be hard to see them land the top LB prospect in the nation from out of state while finishing with 5 or 6 losses. While we are mindful that Clemson can promise him an immediate starting job playing for Ernie Sims' former coach while FSU cannot (FSU is loaded with linebacker talent), we think FSU is in good position at the present time and that FSU's position will only improve from here. It will really depend on whether the kid prefers immediate playing time or the better program.
3. Are Bell, Drew and Steward silents?
This rumor seems to originate from another board. These rumors stem all the time ever year. Anyone can be an insider on the internet, and can roll the dice for internet credibility. Bell, Steward and Drew all seem to be pretty high on Florida State. There's a great chance they could all be in Tallahassee in Fall 2011, but there's no credible proof at this point that any are silents. Bell is down to FSU and Ole Miss, Steward is down to FSU and Clemson, and Drew is between FSU and UGA.

I wonder which coach drew this. My guess is Coley. Not only is he a great recruiter, he’s also a skilled artist.
No Dwyer ended up playing without him

2011 CB From Pensacola Washington
I wrote about him on the site during the summer. He is my younger cousin and we are cousins of Seminole Legend Derrick Brooks! The player is a 16 year old CB named Gary Brooks from Pensacola B.T. Washington High School. At 16 he is about 5’10 and between 165-170 lbs and runs a 4.5 (40 yd dash). Plays in a zone scheme and has very good “Football Commen Sense” and instincts. This year he has a 65 yard Receiving Td he has a 99 yard kickoff return for TD and a 95 yard Kickoff return for TD this past week as time expired to send the game into overtime! He also has 3 INT’S this year as well, he is an outstanding player on a below average team and is also not known by many. He is a natural Corner Back and a Return Specialist. He is a young senior and has plenty of time left to grow. When i mentioned him in the summer alot of guys here on the site wanted me to keep them updated on him thats the reason for this comment. He also plays this Friday against Pensacola High School defending state champs!

have you visited tharinger.com?
they’ll help a kid out. They solicit film, etc.
Of course, I’m assuming he’s got talent.
Haven’t been to tha ringer but I will check it out! He definitely has talent he ran 3 or 4 kickoffs back last year and had about 4 INTS last year as a 15 year old and also averaged 45 yards a kick return! This year he is 16 and already has 2 kick return TDs (one as time expired to send the game into OT!)and averaging 65 yds a return this year! Also has a Reception TD (didn’t play offense last year) and has 3 INTs this is through 3 games so he definitely has talent!

Is it going to be quiet till December or January? I remeber last year that is when Luc and Joyner commited. I guess its because the kids are playing and trying to focus on their season.

Junior visits during March, July during camps, Official visits to big games (Florida and Miami are big; small games get little visitors), December, January, February.

Perhaps it goes back to a rainy night . . . .
In 2002. There are, unfortunately, some videos on YouTube that might assist your understanding, should you be inclined towards some self-pity for a while. Some might say that was the beginning of the Dark Ages.
But that is firmly in the past. The sun is coming out, game by game . . .

Probably should have been the first sign
everyone saw it as ‘they don’t play well in the rain’ like it was some mental thing or non tangible thing
well we didnt play well in the rain because it helps negate athletic superiority and then a team relys on coaching to win. we know how that turned out for those 8 years

I remember it all too well
On TV you hear this UL fan very clearly in the background (he must have been close to or in the press box) shouting “FSU sucks” and I remember watching the game and thinking, “he’s right, we do suck”. And not just in that game. Bowden got a away with sucking for quite a while just because of superior athletes and Mickey Andrews, but even they couldn’t carry Bobby and the idiot son.
That game also began UL's national-recognition as a football program at all, really.

I live in Louisville
And the city is pretty excited about him. There are billboards up around town and other ads about him. I just hope they give him a few years to right this ship, Kragthorpe really brought the program down.
Not good news but encouraging...
I talked to Waisome’s brother over the weekend and I asked him about how/why Waisome made his decision. He said that it really was a battle between FSU and UF, The prob for FSU is that he grew up a UF fan and knew he was going to play there once he got the offer. However, Jimbo and Co turned the heat on and challenged UF for the top spot. Rod said that Nick really thought long hard because he really liked FSU’s staff and the way they recruited him (did not disparage other programs, was very honest, and how the staff and players are very welcoming). Also to note, Nick was very impressed with the new staff and programs for the team, Rod said that he was blown away by the differences just in one year (I think this was a huge need for our recruiting and we will see immediate impacts). So why did Nick pick UF – Rod said that it was a combo of being a fan AND wait for it….. Urban promised him he would play immediately. Nick isn’t a thug and is intelligent but he’s also young and the combo of being told by Urban himself that you would play immediately and growing up a fan was to hard for FSU to overcome.
So Congrats to Jimbo and Co… I think the importance of process can also be applied to recruiting (process before results). Since we don’t have the fame of the 90’s to lean on anymore, Jimbo’s method of recruiting FL is stirring the pot and Urban is scared. I know that UF is a better program but the players in FL are already distinguishing the FSU of today from the FSU of the lost decade. The results are coming…

thanks........ i was just wondering.
i guess he’ll surface somewhere – like CJ Mizell at Washington State – LoL.
Your Guy.....
If you still wonder why C.J. Mizell doesn’t start, maybe this will clue you in. Early in practice the defense was doing a tackling drill where a runner carries the ball between cones and the defender must close, break down and make the tackle. Mizell’s first attempt was about half speed and he barely made contact with the ball carrier. He was told to do it again. Same effort. Again. Same effort. Now other players are yelling, because the drill has ground to a halt. Again. Same effort. Again. Same effort. Finally, Mizell was told to start running, which he did around the defensive practice field. Slowly, until the drill ended.
Paul Wulff inherited a program that was full of guys with a million-dollar body but 10-cent brain and/or work ethic. Wulff and his staff have dedicated a lot of time and effort to changing that within WSU, something that led to a lot of “talent” leaving over the past two years, but also something that has been responsible for getting this program back on the right track to long-term performance.
Which brings us back to Mizell.
Who knows why he wasn’t bringing it yesterday. What we do know is that this isn’t the first time something like this has happened. I’m not saying he’s necessarily got a 10-cent brain or work ethic to go along with his million-dollar body, but he’s starting to earn that reputation. And I don’t know what the solution is to getting him motivated, but I do know that the coaching staff has worked too hard to change that culture to let this slide because he’s talented.
The good news? It doesn’t look like anyone’s letting it slide. And it’s not just the coaches holding him accountable, it’s his teammates, too. That’s a good thing. But here’s to hoping he gets it turned around before Saturday, because we sure as heck need him on that football field against USC. He’s one of the few guys we have who can match up physically with the Trojans, and his strength is in tracking down runners, which USC has a bleep-ton of who carry the ball about 35 times a game.
Please, C.J. Get your freaking head screwed on straight.
What 2nd LOI are you talking about?
You don’t sign 2. He signed with UM. Didn’t get enrolled. Got released. He’s free to enroll anywhere he wants without signing an LOI as long as he is accepted and clears the clearinghouse.
What am I missing.

We do not have a Journalism program per se,
but we do have a major titled Editing Writing and Media. It is a joint venture of the English and Communications Departments. EWM is in its infancy and I believe it was started in the Fall of 2009. The hope is that it is allowed to grow and develop into a legitimate Journalism School.

old rumor remaking the rounds. I believe FSU holds the advantage until quoted otherwise.

big weekend for FSU recruits
James Wilder rushes for 2 TDs and so does Devonta Freeman in big wins
Jacob Coker, man I like this guy throws for 179 yards, one TD and rushes for 3 more.
Tyler Hunter had two interceptions in Loundes romp!
We are "process oriented" as opposed to "results oriented." says Fisher.
The process is real, make no mistake, it gets stronger and stronger day by day, it is unstoppable!

I know O'Leary, Ruben Carter, Jacob Coker, Karlos Williams, Gio Newberry were there.
Some fan had a “Newberry, O’Leary, Seminoles” poster. O’Leary arrived a little late.
Jesus Christ
Can somebody with ANY relationship with the coaches please tell them to offer this kid!!!
http://news-press.net/blogs/hsfootball/2010/09/24/pender-at-it-again/
I don’t care that “the coaches know what they’re doing” in this case because he is absolutely balling out, he wants an offer (said it himself) and he would be a great pickup!!
kid is pretty amazing.
hope we pursue him. I imagine after this class we only take one more RB next cycle.
Newberry has already been in the ears of several prospects but now that he's public, should help even more
We were all created to be Seminoles. This is why we bleed garnet and piss gold.

Nice, so he fits the mold of commit/recruiter? Always good to have those.
Guys like K. Williams, Luc from last year.
I think he'll be effective with Williams and Wilder. He has a good friendship with Ray Drew, I know that.

Georgia sucking + this class being so awesome =
Ray Drew. Come on buddy!
Great news
Based of O'Leary
Almost sure that it is a packaged deal. If Brisset goes elsewhere O’Leary may do the same.
where does your info come from?

some ppl saying that the Dwyer trio wants to play together
and the only place they can do that is FSU. Volstud, do you think that if O’Leary & Brissett come to florida state, will Maggitt follow?

He said above if FSU takes Brissett, O'Leary would likely follow.
Volstud’s opinion.

Just read that too. Same time, you gotta wonder, since the guy also says Jernigan is becoming interesting.
…when we know he’s a gate. Same with Clowney. There’s no doubt about him either.
we'll have a ridiculous class if we close with our targets
ridiculous.
I’m doing every thing I can to keep my expectations low.
Two solid OL, Steward, one of Drew/Rasco and Bell and I'm stoked.
And I think that’s very likely. Guaranteed top 5 class finish.
Add in both of Drew/Rasco and/or O’Leary and we could finish top 2 in both Rivals and ESPN.

I'm with you trick. Two OL, Steward, Bell, and a DE.
OH man. Just when I thought last class was special. And we did it this year without the legacies.
I really want 3 DE.
We only signed 1 last year (Werner – SDE). We need 2 WDE imo and would LOVE to get both Drew and Rasco. I think we have a good shot at each, but not sure about both.

What is it looking like with our 16 and strong possibles as far as qualifying for our 2011 class?
Anyone in danger as far as we know?
GO NOLES!!! SCALP EM!
Anyone know what 2012 prospect Wilder is good friends with?
I cant remember where I saw it but I curious if it would help us
Sanders Jr. is 2012
Chickillo is 2011

Only Tampa area kids for 2012 I can think of off the top of my head are Earl Moore, Matt Jones and Dante Fowler, Jr.
No clue if he’s close with them. They don’t attend Plant or Wilder’s previous school, I don’t think.

The FanPost regarding Nick Marshall was taken down? I wasn’t done reading that and if there is a chance we are still going to get Marshall, I want to know about it!!
