2011 Recruiting Discussion Thread #10 [CLOSED]

Welcome to the recruiting discussion thread.  Please refer to the Recruiting Board for information on prospects.  We are asking readers comment here instead of the recruiting board so that the recruiting board will load quicker.  Feel free to talk recruiting news, rumor, information, etc.  Amateurs and experts are all welcome.  No question is too simple.  Have a projected class?  That's fine as well.

Once this thread fills up, we will start a new one.

Also, please don't fish for information from subscription websites.  Violators will be banned from this thread.

Notes:

  • James Wilder commits 08.14.10    Removed Nick Waisome 08.14.10
  • Arrington Jenkins added. 08.29.10.
  • 2012 DT Dalvon Stuckey to FSU. 09.11.10.

FAQ:

1.  Will FSU take 2 WRs now instead of just Rashad Greene?
This is more likely with the dismissal of Jarmon Fortson.  FSU is loaded at wide receiver and doesn't need to take another.  FSU could have as many as 13 wide receivers in 2011.  That's more than optimal and is not a good use of finite resources (85scholarships).  However, this answer likely depends on the future of Taiwan Easterling (baseball, but when?) and Cam Wade (don't see many non-contributing 5th-year seniors on the roster).  The coaches will be in the best position to determine this, and we are not going to second guess their move here.
2. What's up w/ Tony Steward?

This is a Clemson-FSU battle. Clemson is in desperate need of linebackers because its current crop lacks both quality and numbers.  Plus, Steward's idol is Ernie Sims, who was coached by Clemson LB coach Kevin Steele.  Steward named Clemson his leader following the camp.  Despite this, we are confident in FSU's position with him.  Steward is very respectful and has said good things about every school he visits.  Clemson will be an underdog in 4-5 games this season and it would be hard to see them land the top LB prospect in the nation from out of state while finishing with 5 or 6 losses.  While we are mindful that Clemson can promise him an immediate starting job playing for Ernie Sims' former coach while FSU cannot (FSU is loaded with linebacker talent), we think FSU is in good position at the present time and that FSU's position will only improve from here.  It will really depend on whether the kid prefers immediate playing time or the better program.
3. Are Bell, Drew and Steward silents?
This rumor seems to originate from another board. These rumors stem all the time ever year. Anyone can be an insider on the internet, and can roll the dice for internet credibility. Bell, Steward and Drew all seem to be pretty high on Florida State. There's a great chance they could all be in Tallahassee in Fall 2011, but there's no credible proof at this point that any are silents. Bell is down to FSU and Ole Miss, Steward is down to FSU and Clemson, and Drew is between FSU and UGA.

couldn’t throw it in the ocean from the beach watching that game.. he was ok on the short to short mid, anything beyond that not so good.. oleary appears to be a pretty good athlete.. took a couple plays off and jogged around a bit though.. they got screwed big at the end there. national highschool football association will have a good look at that i bet…

On the other hand, I was very impressed by Brissett. His offensive line could not block Glenville, so Dwyer adjusted by using their sprint out passing game often. It limited his opportunities to pass downfield.

Get the kid a redshirt year, some good coaching, and complete dedication to being a quarterback, and you’ll have a special guy at the position.

Why does ESPN not list us as one of the leaders for Kevin Grooms?

They list Tennessee Volunteers, Mississippi Rebels, Rutgers Scarlet Knights, Oregon Ducks, Kansas State Wildcats. I thought the rumor was that if he had made it up to the Jimbo Camp, he would’ve committed. Has anything happened between now and then? For some reason, I never hear anything about this kid.

I am getting really excited about this recruiting class.

I think we are in really good position (chance of commiting very likely) with:

Ray Drew
Giorgio Newberry
Ruben Carter
Tony Steward.

In addition, I think we have a reasonable shot (chance of commiting likely) at:

Jacoby Brisset
Nick O’leary

Assuming we land 4 out of those 6 this class will be ridiculous! Am I missing anybody?

by mmmCheese on Sep 9, 2010 12:20 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

I saw him do it live. And laughed.

The fix was in big time for that game. I mean…wow. First they called back a relatively clear TD reception (the receiver’s knee landed in the end zone well ahead of the rest of his body).

But the worst of it came with the final two plays. Jacoby Brisett tried to dive it in from the 1 and drove the pile, and appeared to break the plane of the goal as the refs blew the whistle. They blew it as the pile was still moving forward, deeper into the endzone. Then spotted it just inside the 1 yard line.

The next, and final, play was the really incredible one. Brisset dove again, and clearly got into the endzone, I mean, by at least 2-3 feet. Then the pile jumped on him. The refs did not stop the clock to spot the ball, and essentially let time expire, then claimed he didn’t get in.

Personally, after all that, I’m surprised O’Leary contained himself as well as he did.

im never really worried about our O-line recruits

I feel like there’s not a huge demand for the type of guys we go after. I think if we get guys with a specific body type and a great work ethic we’ll be fine for the duration of Trickett’s coaching career at FSU.

With the other positions in football i think “god-given” talent plays a huge role in the success of players. With OL i feel like we can “build players from nothing”. We get guys we like. Shape them the way we want. Teach them the techniques. Watch them grow into stud players.

As long as we have guys who want to put in the time and enough depth to have a mostly Junior-Senior starting line we’ll be successful there

by B-rod24 on Sep 10, 2010 12:26 PM EDT up reply actions

There are interesting cultural (& possibly regional) differences re officials from verbal commitments

Michigan, for example, doesn’t allow players who have verbally committed to take officials elsewhere; UF really frowns on it—it could get you banished by UM. We do. This is interesting b/c when I talk with friends who are die-hard Michigan fans, for example, they learn that someone like Karlos Williams is taking officials and they infer that these other programs have a legit chance at getting him to de-commit from FSU. When I tell them that Karlos is only visiting to have a back-up plan in case of a football apocolypse (e.g., Jimbo leaves, etc.), they don’t believe me… they still consider Karlos a soft verbal.

Accountabilty is back in Tallahassee....

by TLHWG on Sep 10, 2010 2:20 PM EDT up reply actions

just tell them, these are 17 and 18 year old kids, getting to go places they never though possible

for FREE, shoot, I’d be going to USC, Michigan, Texas, Alabama, and Hawaii if they offered me official visits (although I think Hawaii really limits their’s to only those they think will commit because of cost) because they are either meccas of college football (Bama and UM) or awesome places. (before anyone says why not FSU, I’m originally from Pensacola and could go on my own dime).

I’ve always thought that because kids take visits after committing makes them a soft verbal is one of the dumbest recruiting thoughts out there. These are kids, they want to go to these places for free, and sometimes want to recruit for their school. And some do have legitimate interest.

Karlos is the recruit I am least worried about in this class.

From my understanding, ESPN lists offers in no particular order.

Are you basing this on an article that expressly says we lead, or just the recruit profile page?

ESPN will have a team that a kid has dropped or that isn’t even recruiting the kid anymore at the top of the list

does anyone know his size,

I know he is real young and still growing. ESPN has him as 6’5 298 but who knows when that was taken.

6'4" 283 in January according to verified camp numbers on Rivals.

Don’t think ESPN’s are verified but it’s possible those are relatively accurate numbers if he’s grown.

Hopefully it will be more hidden talent that will pursue football like a Bjoern and a Jesse Williams. Disagree completely

Size: I’m 5’10, and Trent is definitely shorter than me.

Strength: Richardson is a sophomore freak of nature. Wilder has a strong lower body, but I don’t expect him to be as strong as Trent is at this point in his career.

Running Style: Trent can pound or finesse. His vision is simply incredible. There’s a reason he was the best back in the nation coming out of HS.

Wilder is great, and I’m not one of those “ahh he sucks at RB blah blah blah” types, but I don’t think he’s anything close to Trent.

This shows what a good recruiting staff can do in the face of common perceptions

Not our staff, USC’s. The fact that a Fla kid would have have the briefest thought about going out there with the way they looked the first two weeks and the sanctions is crazy. And people were worried about how the OU game would affect recruiting.

Lets get a DP pipeline going

I know there is no place for D. Hart in this class and I like our RB recruits better anyway, but as a DP alum I love watching Hart play. HaHa and K. Williams would make our 2012 secondary look so scary that Mark Stoops would be having flashbacks to his 2001 secondary at Miami. I hope Williams and Shaw can get HaHa to switch to the Noles, if he committed to Bama because of the depth chart than he should take a quick look at our lack of safeties and realize he can be in the 2 deep as a true froshman with a chance to battle for the starting job right away.

Maybe the next big name for FSU could be Mario (Edwards and Pender) much like we have the Christian’s, Nigel’s

by RunninNole5 on Sep 17, 2010 7:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, I found this

http://sports.yahoo.com/top/news?slug=rivals-1122495

"I’ve been hearing from Florida State and Tennessee," Pender said. "I’m keeping in contact with them right now. Actually, I haven’t talked to Tennessee yet. I call the Florida State coaches, though."

"I went up there for a camp," he said of Florida State. "It went well. I got to talk to the coaches afterward. They liked me a lot and an offer could come this season if I do well. They want to see a little bit of game film and see what they see from that."

"They want to see me on film and want me to send it off to them after a few games. They seem to like me a lot."

"Florida State, they stand out to me right now," Pender said. "They’ve always been my school. I’ve always wanted to go there."

Please offer this kid and get him committed. FINALLY WE CAN HAVE OUR OWN DAMN PERCY HARVIN TYPE GUY, instead of always having to listen to how _ at Florida is the next Percy Harvin type-player. This kid seems REAL good. I don’t care if you’re playing against the worst school in Florida, these are 17-18 year olds he’s playing against and to run for 344 yards against peers is ridiculous.

by Sem1nole on Sep 17, 2010 8:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Pender and his teammate Dumas are both said to have interest in FSU

But as far as Pender goes……………Damn this kid is about to blow up!

by westcoastnolefan on Sep 18, 2010 12:31 AM EDT reply actions

Also

I think it is absolutely imperative that we re-establish a presence in SWFLA. Pender and Mike Dumas are examples of talent that actually have an interest in FSU. I’m irritated at the fact 2011 talents like Blakely, Sammy Watkins, and Bellamy had no real interest in FSU ( Though we may have screwed ourselves outta Bellamy.I’m no insider so I’ll leave it at that. No use pissing people off). Maybe the Wilder commitment can assist us in our effort to maintain a foot in that area.

Do you think that the relationship that some of the coaches have with other teams

JF with Bama, Stoops with OU and AZ has any to help with recuiting for us and these schools. Lets say we have a guy instate that we dont need or would fit that the other school do you think the coaches would help out these teams or they help us out. Sounds crazy but seen that we are all in Def conf. and most have mutal threats like UF. I know it sounds crazzy but If I know UF was after a kid we didnt have a chance or didnt need as much as Bama or if we saw someone off the radar that Bama could use and get them to him before UF found out wouldnt that make since.

Jernigan also admits that the recent bad publicity at Florida has had a small effect on him. The Gator football program has had 30 players arrested since Urban Meyer took over in 2004.

“It definitely makes you wonder [what’s going on there],” Jernigan said.
