Roberto Aguayo, a highly-rated kicker and punter for the 2012 class has committed to the Florida State Seminoles, per Noles247. Aguayo is from South Lake HS in Groveland, FL. That is the same school of Florida State 2011 cornerback Nick Waisome. Aguayo stands 5'11" and weighs in at 180 pounds.
I have to admit that I know very little about evaluating kickers. I do know that he is the No. 1 ranked kicker and No. 3 ranked punter nationally in the Class of 2012 according to rankings done by Kohl’s Kicking Camps.
"Ball explodes off the foot, extremely athletic and smooth, Won Underclassman Challenge on KO and showed well on FG in 2010. D1 ready right now. Super focus, gamer, talented, handles pressure, can also punt, had a 5.0 hang-time at the National Scholarship Camp, kicking off the ground right now, special kid, has proven himself multiple times"- Kohls
Aguayo is one of only three kickers on the ESPNU150 Watch List for 2012. I found some film of him kicking here. FSU The Sentinel says:
he kicked four field goals [in 2009] of 50 yards or longer, had 23 kickoffs go into the end zone for touch backs and his hang time on punts has been clocked at 5.0 seconds. The longest field goal he has kicked in practice, without without a rush is 63-yards.
FSU was heavily pursuing two kickers-- Aguayo and Marshall Morgan. It appears the 'Noles were going to take whichever kid committed first, and that was Aguayo. Morgan will go to UGA, it appears, to start as a freshman. FSU won't take two kickers in this class. Good of Florida State to plan ahead and think about the special teams a year in advance, as opposed to offering a certain newphew of a coach, sight unseen (that actually happened in the middle part of the decade).
It is likely that Aguayo will replace Shawn Powell in 2012 as punter, and then take over kicking duties as well in 2013.
Florida State, which already has the #1 class of 2011, is likely to bring in an equally talented class in 2012, though it will probably be smaller in number. Florida State continues to do an excellent job identifying targets quickly and landing them early. Aguayo is the seventh commitment of the 2012 class. The others are Dalvon Stuckey (6'3" 295lb DT), Delmarick "Mario" Pender (elite RB), P.J. Williams (excellent DB), and Dante Fowler, Jr. (excellent defensive end), Chris Casher(excellent defensive end), and Amos A.J. Leggett (very good DB). All six position players are in the early top-150 rankings. Florida State already has good talent. With the 2011 and 2012 classes, however, it is about to have great talent.
