Just How Good could the Seminoles' Defense be in 2012
First off lets start with the caliber of athletes that we will have in the secondary, our corners will at least be in the top of the nation with NFL prospect Xavier Rhodes and cover corners Greg Reid, Lamarcus Joyner, Nick Waisome. Safety will feature another 5* in Karlos Williams and the other safety spot will be filled by Nick Moody who willd be a 3 year starter and will have made a lot of improvement from this year, his first full year on the field.Keelin Smith will be able tocontribute at both Safety an Corner. The other safeties on the team will be second year players, Gerald Demps, Lamarcus Brutus and Tyler Hunter.
Linebacker will be absolutely loaded with at three 5* players plus will feature Telvin Smith who is right now one of the most underrated players on the team. We saw a glimpse of his talent during the Chik-fil-A Bowl when he made three or more great tackles on special teams. The combination of size and speed will be outstanding starting with Christian Jones who will be 6'4" and around 240 lbs, who played in every game as a true freshman. When we land his signature Tony Steward will come in and be one of the top LB's on the team as a true freshman. By 2012 he Tony will be around 6'1" 235 lbs, with speed and explosion that is unparalleled. The other starting LB spot can be filled by any other of these talented players Telvin Smith, previously mentioned, Jeff Luc another 5* player, Vince Williams will be a senior, Nigel Terrell, Terrance Smith, or possibly James Wilder Jr another 5*. All of these guys will play as this year at least 7 LB's saw playing time.
By 2012 FSU will finally have grown men across the front. DE will feature both size and speed that we have not seen in Tallahassee in many years. Starting with senior and 3rd year starter Brandon Jenkins, the other DE will have many possibilities the fact that Bjoern Werner played as a true freshman and has no played football for long, who knows how much better he will be in 2 more years after being in the system.Cornellius Carradine will be in his second year and will be competing for the starting position as well. Also DE will feature Sophomore stud Aaron Lynch who might bypass the rest of the DE's on the roster, Lynch will have gone through 2 off-season conditioning programs before the start of his sophomore year, if not you still have Dan Hicks who will be in his 4th year, also Newberry will be coming off a redshirt year and will also be ready to contribute.
DT will be a loaded in 2012 starting off with 4 year starter Jacobie McDaniel. By 2012 we will have at least five 300 pounders to get movement on the LOS. Everette Dawkins will be in his 5th year and will be a good combination of size and speed. Demonte McAlister will be close to 300lbs and in his 4th year. Darious Cummings and Cameron Erving will be over 300lbs and in their third year and will be ready to contribute. Also Derrick Mitchell will be in his second year and the coaching staff is already very high on this recruit as well as Niles Lawrence-Stample who might be the most athletic DT on the team. That is 7 DT's alone that will be ready to play in 2012.
If you look at it, 2012 will offer at least 28 players that can come in and play and out of the 28 it is hard to find a player that will provide a weak spot in the Defense. This does not include any true freshman in 2012 that could come in and offer quality reps as did a Christian Jones, Werner, Joyner, and Telvin Smith did this year on defense. Not only will the defense be loaded, but special teams will have all kinds of athletes running down the field. You should expect blocked punts, big returns and big hits like we have never seen given the emphasis and knowledge that Gran gives to the special teams.
I can't wait for the excitement that this Defense will bring in 2012.

The defense will be great in 2011 but by 2012 it will be the elite defense in America
Not just one of the elite defenses, but flat out THE elite defense.
Just a thought....
With all the DE talent in place and on the way, would there be any chance Werner moves to DT? I watched him alot this year and to me he was the second best DE on the team. The senior played much better but was not even close to as strong or smart as Werner, IMHO. Anyway, Werners dominant move was his bull rush. I didnt see him beat to many tackes around the end or swim/sneak inside. His best move was just collapsing the pocket by pushing the tackle into the QB. I am by no means a footbal know-it-all and reallt learned alot by reading the article on d-line techniques. I was just thinking this could add some needed DT depth and allow some more pure DEs get on the field. Thoughts?
Interesting thought.
He could develop into a DT if he continues to add good weight. Actually, while it may be a long time from now, Werner projects best to the next level as a 5-tech in a 30 imo so playing DT in our system could help better prepare him for that. With that said, I would bet that he stays at DE in his time at FSU
Definitely need him at end over tackle
Need the size at end and not little DEs
This team will improve in '10... on its 16-16 conference record over the last 4 years.... after losing 20 games in the last 4 years... after having the 7th worst major-conference defense... after not even winning its own division in the ACC in the last 4.

What do you think about Dawkins kicking out to end?
Could be really great on 1st/2nd down.
werner could develop into a DT
I am not sure how big his frame is, but he looks to be able to put on the additional 20lbs to be a DT and I think he would be a stud at DT.
He's already almost 21.
His improvement will come in power & technique…..I say he tops out around 285/290ish range.

His ability to just blow an OL back would be scary in the middle, how many plays could he blow up by sending a G flying back at the QB.
Werner?
if he’s moved inside that ability would diminish severely. the reason he’s so good at it now is because at ~275lbs he’s meeting opposing OT’s in pass pro after a chance to get 2-3 yards of steam built up before contact. if he’s moved inside the contact would be almost instantaneous, thus a much lower chance of it happening. i like his ability to set the edge at 6’4 285 or so here for the next 2-3 years. bright future for this young man at de.
I know he didn't come in w/all the *****
But the player I’m most excited to see next year is Telvin Smith. He’s an absolutely filthy playmaker and seems to me to be the best FOOTBALL player on the field. I love seeing 22 close on a ball carrier. He must have no safety instincts, because we could sure use a safety that never misses an open field tackle

The reason I say safety is
1) we have a definite need
2) he’s listed at 6’3" 205 (and looks it)

Don’t think Rhodes will be here. Not sure about Jenkins either.

Grain of salt
Not to take away from the fact that the functional depth and talent should be loaded on D, but I have to add that many, many times over the years 5* recruits don’t end up 5* players. Be it injury, grades. character or PT issues it happens to every team.
Just be prepared that its possble we don’t have Steward, Werner etc in a couple years for any number of reasons. Bud has even said himself that DTs are often a big casualty bc of grades….

Running QB's
Fisher likes for the QB to run, so we to develope a back up QB immediately? We hear a little about Trickett and Secord, but we don’t have any facts now. The spring hopefully will show us something, but that is not game time.
