FSU Opponent Preview: Virginia Tech Hokies

Florida State (11-4, 1-0) wraps up their six game road swing with a trip through Blacksburg to take on the Virginia Tech Hokies (9-4, 0-1).  FSU is looking for its 2nd ever 2-0 start in ACC play. The Hokies have been beset with injuries, though their starting 5 is still very talented – basically, they’re a team with no depth. The most serious injury is to senior guard Dorenzo Hudson (foot – out for year) as he averaged 15.2 PPG last season. He attempted to pull an Uche Echefu and play an entire season with an injury that would have been a shoe-in for a medical redshirt, but in the early going he was a liability on the court (offensive rating of 88.6) and is finally sitting for the rest of the year. Hopefully the NCAA will grant him a medical shirt. JT Thompson, Allen Chaney and Cadarian Raines are also out for the season, though none played a role this year, so the Hokies have played their entire season with the current roster (minus Hudson). The wildcard is beastly forward Jeff Allen who has been held out of 70% of this week's practices with a groin sprain, but is expected for the game.

Even without their injuries the Hokies are still the Malcolm Delaney show. The senior guard, who’s played 93% of his team’s minutes, is averaging 19.1 PPG to go along with 4.1 assists (and 4.1 turnovers). For his career he’s been a decent 3-pt shooter, but this year he’s shooting at elite status (43.6%). He’s not a spot up shooter though, as he loves to penetrate and force contact, and with the injury to Kyrie Irving he’s likely the most difficult player in the ACC to guard off the dribble. Leonard Hamilton has been experimenting this season more than usual with zone defenses, so it will be interesting to see how he game-plans for Delaney. The Hokies don’t have any other 3-pt threats, so look for help on drives trying to force the kick-out. Delaney is loose with the ball, and FSU is extremely good at flooding passing lanes. I’d like to see Delaney face guarded when he’s without the ball, but that’s not Hamilton’s style.

Jeff Allen, if he’s healthy, is a better rebounder than anyone on the Seminole roster, and is considered elite nationally in cleaning up defensive rebounds. Sophomore Erick Green is a star in the making, generating tremendous stats in limited minutes, including a 4.2:1 assist/turnover rating, an offensive rating of 117.3, and a steal rate better than Chris Singleton’s. His emergence has allowed Delaney to play off the ball, coming off screens where he's most effective.

The Hokies are coached by Seth Greenberg, in his 8th season at VT (7 in the ACC). He’s taken them to the NCAA Tournament one time.

KenPom has us as a 5 point underdog in this one, while Vegas has it -4. Tipoff is 3 pm on ESPN2.

Baylor was neutral court,

and Pomeroy has Baylor at 28 and VT at 32. We’re at 44.

I'm almost with you. I watched the first half of the Auburn game & could not watch anymore.

First time I turned off a Nole game early. The D is great but the turnovers & O is the same putridness!

GO NOLES!!! SCALP EM!

Wasted potential & opportunites

Same players, different staff, different result. I’d gladly give up some D for some offense. People, or fans for that matter, don’t say hey let’s go the watch the noles play cause the D is awesome. It’s clear that Ham doesn’t have a process and due to that the good results will not be forthcoming. When somebody at FSU Central gets a clue I’ll change my tune but until then watching is a totally useless and frustrating endeavor.

I’m not watching on ESPN3 so I’m missing the first part of the game.

I said this in another GDT

If I am a coach, and I play FSU, I don’t care WHAT defensive scheme I usually run, I’m running zone against FSU. I don’t care if I have NO idea how to coach a zone D, I buy a freaking “Zone defense for dummies” book and install it in 2 days.

When I watch FSU games with some of my friends who play H.S. basketball, they are able to pick out everything we do wrong and are shocked at some of the little things-basic basketball 101 things-we are unable to do. Its sad that me and other HS juniors can see what we’re doing wrong. hopefully we’ll pull it together and make a run down the stretch…

oh, and another thing

can we just cut dulkys and get it over with? the slumps he has are unacceptable at the high school level. you cant have 20 shot droughts and start on a high school team, so why is he still on our ACC major college team? loucks is embarrassingly nonathletic, and he turns the ball over more often than i blink, so it pains me to see him on the floor. snaer looks more lost than he did as a true freshman in the ACC, and that speaks to coaching, not work ethic. it saddens me to think what bernard james will become next year, since he only rolls over his right shoulder to shoot inside, and everyone else gets worse as they go on this team. if kreft would stop playing hack-a-player he would be a great player, but thats not gonna happen either. overall, embarrassing to see this team wearing the garnet and gold.

by Gulfport Nole on Jan 8, 2011 4:20 PM EST up reply actions

We'll put up 35, but maybe not 50

FSU has scored less than 22 point in the first half in nearly 40% of it’s games

that floor is too low

if we dont put up 35 he shouldnt be allowed to even go home with the team. if we score less than 45 he should be fired today.

the thing is, there is so much blame to go around

usually the dribbler over-dribbles and gets stuck
or
the dribbler doesnt make the double commit, and has no passing lane

but more times than not, there is no one to pass to, either the guy in the middle of the court is late, or the wing players are standing at the ft line checking out the cheerleaders..

its a team-wide effort…

Hahahaha

Anyone notice how effortlessly VT handled our press? Motion, passing lanes…amazing.

"I guess they have a reputation of being more of a tricky team and not being tough. You hit ‘em in the mouth, and they don’t like it. Other teams that have beat them just hit them in the mouth, so that’s what we started out with.’’ - Nick Moody

I know man.

I mean, how much worse could we really be? I know the defense is incredible. I get that. But I’d sacrifice some of that for a team that looks adept at least on occassions.

FYI

I appreciate you linking that to open up in a new window.

I cant’ STAND when people link stuff and it replaces the TN thread. It makes me madder than FSU’s basketball offense.

FSU beat VT in all of the following categories

FGM, FGA, 3PM, 3PA, OREB, DREB, AST, and BLK

Unfortunately, VT made 26 MORE FREE THROWS.

Oh I was kidding.

Sloppiest team in the country without a doubt. Other teams look bade because they are smaller, weaker, not as athletic. But not FSU. FSU is just flat out sloppy. That, is coaching.

id give Loucks and Kitchen 30+

id give CS the game more or less

and all the other spots would be wide open.

In reality.....It is past that point......

short of a 11-3 run here on out. Didn’t watch the game but I could have told you what the general tone of the comments would be. Same as always. Went to dinner with the wife and didn’t miss a single frustrating, yell at the TV moment. Ham has to go……Not to tiptoe around it anymore.

Snaer

Snaer is shooting under .350 from the field. That’s lower than his 3 point percentage. Incredible.

hate to say it but

I hope the nole bb team loses the rest of their games so our freaking lame ass excuse of an ad will finally have to make a freaking decision to do something …anything…
