Florida State Film Review: Seminoles 41 - Duke 16

Here it is, another edition of the Florida State Film Review. Unless you're in Jimbo's office, this is the only place you'll find a complete breakdown of every meaningful play run by the 'Noles. This week we review FSU's dominating 41-16 win over the Duke Blue Devils.

FSU doubled up Duke, gaining 8.2 yards/play to Duke's 4.1. I'll have thoughts up later this afternoon. For now, please read this review. We don't claim to be perfect on these, but we do watch them, mashing the replay button multiple times per snap and watching different players each time. Link to final stats.

HOPKINS,D. kickoff 70 yards to the DUKE0, touchback. Bad kick. Bounced at the 5 and very flat. FSU got lucky here.

1-10 Duke 20 Renfree, S pass incomplete to Varner, D. 4 wide Pistol, FSU in press v. all 4 receivers. Tight coverage from Mike Harris, ball overthrown.
2-10 Duke 20 Renfree, S pass incomplete to Thompson, J, QB hurry by WERNER,B.. 4 wide pistol, Rhodes in press, swing pass inaccurate because Bjoern Werner had excellent pressure.
3-10 Duke 20 Renfree, S pass complete to Vernon, C for 11 yards to the DUKE31, 1ST DOWN DUKE P1 (PARKS,T.). 3-down, Werner stand up, Bradham on the field on 3rd-long. WHY? Quick strike over the middle, good route, miscommunication between Rhodes and Parks I think.
1-10 Duke 31 Thompson, J rush for 2 yards to the DUKE33 (RHODES,X.). Inside run, Dawkins held. Good run D.
2-8 Duke 33 Renfree, S pass complete to Crowder, J for loss of 1 yard to the DUKE32 (WILLIAMS,V.;MCDANIEL,J.). Flare screen, excellent pursuit by McDaniel and Jenkins. Williams cleans it up.
3-9 Duke 32 Renfree, S pass intercepted by DAWKINS,E. at the DUKE25, DAWKINS,E. return 0 yards to the DUKE25 (Renfree, S). Why is Vince Williams on the field for a 3rd & 5+? Still, excellent pass rush b the defensive line, Werner bats the ball and Dawkins with good awareness intercepts. Terrible broken ankle here for McDaniel.
6 plays, 12 yards, 2:03 Good initial defensive series. Mixed up the looks, denied big plays, good run defense, got pressure and a turnover.

FLORIDA STATE drive start at 12:57.
1-10 Duke 25 MANUEL,E pass incomplete to JONES,T. Trips Gun. Quick game. Either Jones is off in his route or EJ is off with the throw. Timing pattern and it didn't work. FSU definitely trying to work the ball to the backs via the pass.
2-10 Duke 25 MANUEL,E rush for 13 yards to the DUKE12, 1ST DOWN FSU, out-of-bounds (Young-Wiseman). R1 Bootleg, EJ smartly gets out of bounds without contact.
1-10 Duke 12 MANUEL,E rush for 3 yards to the DUKE9 (Sarmiento, S). 2 RB gun. Zone read with a pitch option out off the backside.
2-7 Duke 09 PRYOR,L. rush for loss of 1 yard to the DUKE10 (Foxx, J;Brown, Ke). 2 RB gun. Lead sweep to Pryor, Fahrenkrug gets beat, Lonnie needs to go around this better. Wonder if Zebrie was supposed to help Krug here. I suspect so. New guys working together.
3-8 Duke 10 MANUEL,E pass incomplete to JONES,T (Gamble, A). Trips gun to the field. Pretty sure EJ misreads this, as Ty Jones deep in the corner of the endzone is not how this one was drawn up. Not a great throw either. It's a TD with a much better throw. O'Leary probably was open.
4-8 Duke 10 HOPKINS,D. field goal attempt from 27 GOOD, clock 11:00.
Florida State 3, Duke 0 6 plays, 15 yards, 1:57 Really poor drive to open the game.

HOPKINS,D. kickoff 55 yards to the DUKE15, out-of-bounds, DUKE ball on DUKE40. Terrible kickoff and I think Hopkins is nursing an injury.

DUKE drive start at 11:00.
1-10 Duke 40 Renfree, S pass incomplete to Braxton, B (REID,G.). FSU again presses up on Duke's wideouts. Joyner is incredibly deep, everyone else up in the box. This look asks a ton of the corners. A comeback route here, not much pressure from the DL, Reid has pretty tight coverage. Arguable interference.
2-10 Duke 40 Scott, D rush for 34 yards to the FSU26, 1ST DOWN DUKE (JOYNER,L.). R2 Duke has trips to the boundary, FSU in cover 3, clouded. 3-3 look, Jenkins gets too far upfield, Dawkins gets washed. Parks needs to be more aggressive. Poor team defense. Too many individuals trying to do their thing.
1-10 FSU 26 Renfree, S sacked for loss of 1 yard to the FSU27 (SMITH,T.), fumble by Renfree, S recovered by DUKE Simmons, P at FSU30. Excellent pass rush by Jenkins, tried to force the fumble, needs to finish the sack though.
2-14 FSU 30 Renfree, S pass complete to Helfet, C for 8 yards to the FSU22 (BRADHAM,N.). Decent pass pressure, Bradham a step slow on the tight end.
3-6 FSU 22 Renfree, S pass complete to Helfet, C for 2 yards to the FSU20 (PARKS,T.). Don't want to see Nigel in on 3rd-5. FSU blitzes, forces quick throw, and Parks is actually there to make the stop.
4-4 FSU 20 Snyderwine, W field goal attempt from 38 GOOD, clock 08:24.
Duke 3, Florida State 3 6 plays, 40 yards, 2:44 Very good defense on 4 of the 5 plays. Duke's run was FSU trying to make the big play and not the smart play.

Asack, P kickoff 56 yards to the FSU14, WILLIAMS,K. return 26 yards to the FSU40 (Byas, J). Good job on the return by Karlos. Takes the short kick and doesn't dance.

FLORIDA STATE drive start at 08:16.
1-10 FSU 40 MANUEL,E pass complete to GREEN,C. for 59 yards to the DUKE1, 1ST DOWN FSU (Greene, Z). P2 Gun trips field. EJ pumps the flat, pass pro very good, steps into the throw and throws a good ball to Christian Green. Green makes a great adjustment as the ball looked like it was thrown over the wrong shoulder. Smart not to give up on the route by Green.
1-G Duke 01 MANUEL,E rush for 1 yard to the DUKE0, TOUCHDOWN, clock 07:50. Good push and good job by E.J. Manuel waiting for the line to get the push and finding the lane.
1-G Duke 03 HOPKINS,D. kick attempt good.
Florida State 10, Duke 3 2 plays, 60 yards, 0:26 Excellent patience and pocket presence by EJ. FSU has better athletes than Duke, sure, but the execution here was nice.

HOPKINS,D. kickoff 70 yards to the DUKE0, touchback.

DUKE drive start at 07:50.
1-10 Duke 20 Renfree, S pass incomplete (WERNER,B.). Tremendous pass rush by Werner. Dominated the tackle.
2-10 Duke 20 Renfree, S pass complete to Helfet, C for 6 yards to the DUKE26 (RHODES,X.). Quick game, excellent tackle by Rhodes.
3-4 Duke 26 Renfree, S pass complete to Varner, D for 6 yards to the DUKE32, 1ST DOWN DUKE. P3 Nothing Joyner can do about this one. Just a great throw and catch. Joyner had fine coverage.
1-10 Duke 32 Scott, D rush for 2 yards to the DUKE34 (ERVING,C.;JERNIGAN,T.). Duke tries to run a trap, Erving and Jernigan hold their ground and stuff it. Excellent first down run defense.
2-8 Duke 34 Renfree, S pass complete to Scott, D for loss of 4 yards to the DUKE30 (JOYNER,L.). Designed swing screen to the back. Joyner beats his block, comes flying up, breaks down and makes a great tackle.
3-12 Duke 30 Renfree, S pass incomplete to Varner, D. ^$^*# Jenkins is badly held, no flag. FSU forces the short throw and the coverage is excellent.
6 plays, 10 yards, 2:52 10 yards on 6 plays? Great defense. Force the opponent to consistently execute in small chunks and no big plays.

4-12 Duke 30 King, A punt 50 yards to the FSU20, REID,G. return 26 yards to the FSU46 (Byas, J), PENALTY FSU illegal block 10 yards to the FSU36, 1st and 10, FSU ball on FSU36. Great return negated by a penalty on Karlos Williams that simply was not there to be called. WTF.

FLORIDA STATE drive start at 04:58.
1-10 FSU 36 GREEN,C. rush for 9 yards to the FSU45 (Daniels, M;Canty, W). I form. End around to the boundary. Great to see FSU getting the ball to Green any way possible. Didn't love the timing here, but did love Lonnie Pryor's block. FSU will probably fake a pass off this later in the season.
2-1 FSU 45 FREEMAN,D. rush for loss of 1 yard to the FSU44 (Daniels, M). I Twins field. Bobby Hart misses his block. He is 17. Freeman does a nice job salvaging this play.
3-2 FSU 44 MANUEL,E rush for 6 yards to the 50 yardline, 1ST DOWN FSU (Young-Wiseman;Daniels, M). R3 3 wr 2 gun gun. Zone read. EJ MISREADS this horribly, but does make up for it by making two men miss. Scary play and he lands on his arm.
1-10 FSU 50 MANUEL,E pass complete to SMITH,R. for 50 yards to the DUKE0, 1ST DOWN FSU, TOUCHDOWN, P4 clock 03:01. I formation, Duke has 9 in the box, Excellent play fake into blitz, pass pro is tremendous here as Duke blitzes EIGHT men. EJ 100% perfect throw to Rodney Smith in stride. Way to step up in the pocket EJ. If he panics and scrambles, this play is blown.
1-G Duke 03 HOPKINS,D. kick attempt good.
Florida State 17, Duke 3 4 plays, 64 yards, 1:57 Execution was good on two of the four plays. Great individual effort by EJ to correct his own mistake on third down.

HOPKINS,D. kickoff 58 yards to the DUKE12, out-of-bounds, DUKE ball on DUKE40. What the hell is up with Hopkins? Terrible.

DUKE drive start at 03:01.
1-10 Duke 40 Scott, D rush for 3 yards to the DUKE43 (BRADHAM,N.). Demonte McAllister doesn't hold the point of attack, but Bradham quickly gets into the hole.
2-7 Duke 43 Scott, D rush for 3 yards to the DUKE46 (SMITH,T.). The rare, rare draw from Duke. Well played by Telvin Smith, Nigel Bradham and Amp McCloud.
3-4 Duke 46 Renfree, S pass incomplete to Varner, D (JONES,C.). Blitz is well timed, and it was a team blitz, not a selfish blitz. Mike Harris forces the pump, and Bjoern Werner bats the ball down.
3 plays, 6 yards, 1:09 Excellent defensive series. Duke runs played pretty well, unselfish play.

4-4 Duke 46 King, A punt 45 yards to the FSU9, REID,G. return 0 yards to the FSU9 (Foster, T), PENALTY FSU holding 4 yards to the FSU5, 1st and 10, FSU ball on FSU5. Pardon me, why the hell is Greg Reid catching a punt at his own 8? Set your feet on the 10 and do not back up. Oh, and a legit holding call.

FLORIDA STATE drive start at 01:52.

1-10 FSU 05 JONES,T rush for no gain to the FSU5, fumble forced by Daniels, M, fumble by JONES,T recovered by FSU PRYOR,L. at FSU5. I Twins field. Inside zone to the boundary, Faircloth is beat across his face. Wonder if Stork needed to help double here? This isn't on Ty Jones.
2-10 FSU 05 MANUEL,E rush for 1 yard to the FSU6, out-of-bounds (Brown, Ke). K Gun. Ty Jones needs to pick up the block at the second level, but passes it up to climb. Stork needed to get the same guy blocked. Really excellent effort by Brown for Duke.
3-9 FSU 06 MANUEL,E pass complete to SHAW,K. for 51 yards to the DUKE43, 1ST DOWN FSU (Daniels, M). P5 Gun trips field. Protection is very good, Duke playing to stop the first down at the sticks, EJ hits Shaw on the very deep cross/post.
1-10 Duke 43 FREEMAN,D. rush for 3 yards to the DUKE40 (Sarmiento, S;Hazelton, C). Pistol trips field. Stretch play. Not very well blocked, but Freeman wasn't too patient here. Did get three.
END OF 1st QUARTER: Florida State 17, Duke 3
Start of 2nd quarter, clock 15:00.
2-7 Duke 40 MANUEL,E pass complete to DENT,G. for 24 yards to the DUKE16, 1ST DOWN FSU (Cockrell, P6 R;Hatcher, C). Gun 4-wide, stacks. Jimbo comes out onto the field all the way to the numbers to yell at Devonta. Bobby Hart and Garrett Faircloth do not handle the DL stunt and the rusher coms free. EJ gets out of it and flips a short one to Greg Dent who has all day to run.
1-10 Duke 16 FREEMAN,D. rush for 6 yards to the DUKE10 (Brown, Ke). Gun 4-wide. Outsize zone to the boundary. Zebrie Sanders and Jacob Fahrenkrug don't get the double team, nice job by freeman.
2-4 Duke 10 FREEMAN,D. rush for 10 yards to the DUKE0, 1ST DOWN FSU, TOUCHDOWN, clock 13:48. R7 Zone sweep. Tremendous blocks by Bryan Stork, Garrett Faircloth, Bobby Hart and good hustle by Fahrenkrug. Freeman didn't have to do anything here.
1-G Duke 03 HOPKINS,D. kick attempt good.
Florida State 24, Duke 3 7 plays, 95 yards, 3:10 Wasn't all that impressed with the execution on this drive. Seemed more like FSU out-athleting Duke. But the TD run was blocked very well, as was the big pass.

Inside, find the rest of the second quarter and the second half!

Star-divide

HOPKINS,D. kickoff 70 yards to the DUKE0, Crowder, J return 19 yards to the DUKE19 (BROOKS,T.). Better kickoff

DUKE drive start at 13:42.
1-10 Duke 19 Renfree, S rush for 3 yards to the DUKE22 (BRADHAM,N.). Zone blitz, FSU denies the short lanes, forces QB scramble, Nigel Bradham nice hit on the QB.
2-7 Duke 22 Renfree, S pass complete to Braxton, B for 3 yards to the DUKE25 (HARRIS,M.;REID,G.). Quick hitch, high throw, Reid with the quick tackle.
3-4 Duke 25 Renfree, S pass incomplete to Varner, D. Dan Hicks is tipping his zone blitz with his stance. And he looks awkward dropping back into coverage. This isn't great defense, but credit Duke for running a nice pick play.
3 plays, 6 yards, 1:45 Very good defensive series. Want to see better team play on that blitz.

4-4 Duke 25 King, A punt 60 yards to the FSU15, REID,G. return 8 yards to the FSU23 (Braxton, B). Getting 8 here is fine.

FLORIDA STATE drive start at 11:57.
1-10 FSU 23 FREEMAN,D. rush for 6 yards to the FSU29 (Canty, W). Gun trips field. Tackle wrap. Excellent blocks by Bobby Hart and Zebrie Sanders. Stork blocks well. Faircloth is not alert and doesn't grab the backer. If he had, this goes for big yards.
2-4 FSU 29 FREEMAN,D. rush for 1 yard to the FSU30 (Foxx, J). Pistol. Think Bobby Hart needs to double with Faircloth, but in any case, Freeman needs to not dance in the hold on 2nd-1.
3-3 FSU 30 FREEMAN,D. rush for 17 yards to the FSU47, 1ST DOWN FSU. R8 I formation. Option to the field. EJ with a ballsy, and late option pitch. Devonta atones for the previous play by catching the pitch and cutting it up hard. Nice job by Lonnie Pryor on the block.
1-10 FSU 47 MANUEL,E sacked for loss of 10 yards to the FSU37 (Gamble, A). Gun. Play action. Love the call, but Nick O'Leary doesn’t pick up the end man on the line. Freshman.
2-20 FSU 37 THOMAS,J. rush for 5 yards to the FSU42 (Brown, Ke;Daniels, M). Gun. Don't like the blocks from Stork or Fahrenkrug either. Sanders pretty good but Sanders/O'Leary need to peel off. Not the fault of Jermaine Thomas.
3-15 FSU 42 MANUEL,E pass complete to SMITH,R. for 11 yards to the DUKE47 (Brown, Ke). Gun, Fahrenkrug helps Zebrie so well that Zebrie's man gets outside and gets quicker pressure.
6 plays, 30 yards, 3:46 Not a terrible drive. O'Leary's error hurt and the sack killed the drive.

4-4 Duke 47 POWELL,S. punt 45 yards to the DUKE2, downed. Excellent punt and hustle!

DUKE drive start at 08:11.
1-10 Duke 02 Scott, D rush for 4 yards to the DUKE6 (MOODY,N.;ERVING,C.). Either Telvin Smith or Brandon Jenkins have outside responsibility here. Neither maintain it. I'm guessing Telvin. Also, not well played by Amp McCloud.
2-6 Duke 06 Scott, D rush for 2 yards to the DUKE8 (MCCLOUD,A.). Cameron Erving and Amp McCloud stay low and dominate here. Makes the job of the linebackers very easy.
3-4 Duke 08 Renfree, S pass complete to Vernon, C for 11 yards to the DUKE19, 1ST DOWN DUKE, P4 out-of-bounds (COMMACK,A.). Real nice timing pattern by Duke here. FSU was in a man blitz and it did not get home. Commack a bit safe here.
1-10 Duke 19 Renfree, S pass complete to Helfet, C for 26 yards to the DUKE45, 1ST DOWN DUKE P5 (HARRIS,M.). Holy hell. Play action, Mike Harris has good coverage and this is just a great throw and catch. Back to back excellent throws by Duke.
1-10 Duke 45 Scott, D rush for loss of 4 yards to the DUKE41 (SMITH,T.). Bad snap screws up the timing by a half count. Telvin Smith shoots the gap. I wish Brandon Jenkins would spin less.
2-14 Duke 41 Renfree, S sacked for loss of 3 yards to the DUKE38 (MCCLOUD,A.). Zone blitz, Jenkins dropped back into coverage, Werner tremendous pass rush, makes QB panic and he runs into McCloud.
3-17 Duke 38 Renfree, S sacked for loss of 6 yards to the DUKE32 (WERNER,B.). Nice pass rush from Werner and hey, Demonte McAllister gets pass pressure. Timmy Jernigan is badly held!
7 plays, 30 yards, 4:13

4-23 Duke 32 King, A punt 53 yards to the FSU15, REID,G. return 6 yards to the FSU21 (Byas, J;Canty, W). Meh.

FLORIDA STATE drive start at 03:58.
1-10 FSU 21 GREEN,C. rush for 2 yards to the FSU23 (Daniels, M;Canty, W). Play is well blocked, but All-ACC Matt Daniels makes a great play to come over. Maybe Green should have bounced this. Like getting the ball to Green.
2-8 FSU 23 MANUEL,E rush for 10 yards to the FSU33, 1ST DOWN FSU, out-of-bounds (Daniels, M). R9 Bootleg. Nothing open, EJ sets up O'Leary great for the block, gets the first down and avoids the hit. Well done.
1-10 FSU 33 MANUEL,E pass complete to SHAW,K. for 7 yards to the FSU40, out-of-bounds. Meh on the throw here by EJ (high). Had to be over the backer though. Kenny Shaw great catch and foot tap.
2-3 FSU 40 PRYOR,L. rush for 4 yards to the FSU44, 1ST DOWN FSU (Daniels, M). R10 FB dive. Nice blocks by Stork and Faircloth. Good footwork.
1-10 FSU 44 MANUEL,E sacked for loss of 9 yards to the FSU35 (Brown, Ke). Single back Ace. The video is jumpy here, but this is either on EJ or on Hart. Duke rushes 6 and FSU only has 5 blockers. Thus, EJ must account for one of them and adjust the protection or find his hot. Without being in a meeting, I can't tell you who this was on. But it needs to get fixed.
2-19 FSU 35 THOMAS,J. rush for 16 yards to the DUKE49 (Daniels, M). With Ponder, Fisher was great at running on 2nd-long to get back to 3rd-workable. With EJ, he seems to want to try to have more attempts to get it all. But here, FSU had
3-3 Duke 49 Timeout Florida State, clock 01:04. I form, lead option to the field. Bobby Hart doesn't move his feet, but EJ improvises and throws the pitch overhand. Good blocks by Beau Reliford and Lonnie Pryor.
3-3 Duke 49 MANUEL,E pass incomplete to SMITH,R.. Third and a short two. Gun trips to the field. Manuel rolls to the field, can't find anyone and fires wide. He needs to stay more in the pocket in the roll and ran himself into pressure. Couldn't find anyone open, but he didn't handle the pressure here. EJ should convert third and two on those rolls most every time.
7 plays, 30 yards, 3:05 Not a good drive by FSU. 30 yards on 7 plays is poor.

4-3 Duke 49 POWELL,S. punt 33 yards to the DUKE16, fair catch by Crowder, J. Awful punt by Powell.

DUKE drive start at 00:53.
1-10 Duke 16 Renfree, S pass complete to Scott, D for 4 yards to the DUKE20, fumble forced by JONES,C., fumble by Scott, D recovered by FSU JONES,C. at DUKE22. FSU is playing to not allow the big play. Duke swing pass to the back. Christian Jones realizes he has help coming, does a great job keeping the back inbounds, then strips the ball, and recovers. This should be 3 tomahawks.
1 play, 6 yards, 0:10

FLORIDA STATE drive start at 00:43.
1-10 Duke 22 MANUEL,E pass incomplete to REED,B.. 4 WR gun to the boundary. EJ works the short side smash concept, nether are open. Doesn't want to take a sack, so he throws it away.
2-23 Duke 35 2nd and 23. 4 wr gun. QB draw. FSU gets screwed by the call here. Freeman cuts the backer. Gets him down. Fahrenkrug unnecessarily jumps on him, but to call this a chop is bullshit. Duke wants this reviewed to see if EJ fumbled.
2-23 Duke 35 THOMAS,J. rush for 5 yards to the DUKE30 (Foxx, J;Canty, W). 4 WR gun, tight zone to the boundary. Hart nice wash, would like to see it more flat. Faircloth decent block. Stork nice block. Fahrenkrug misses his cutoff for the backer. Thomas had a nice seam here, but fell down trying to make the cut and miss the backer.
3-18 Duke 30 Timeout Duke, clock 00:12.
3-18 Duke 30 MANUEL,E pass incomplete (Daniels, M). 4 WR gun. FSU trying for the home run. Protecting with 6, there's an unblocked rusher. EJ wings this out of bounds and grounding is not called, but it should have been.
4-18 Duke 30 HOPKINS,D. field goal attempt from 48 GOOD, clock 00:00. His kickoffs have been bad, but not the field goals.
Florida State 27, Duke 3 5 plays, minus 8 yards, 0:51 Not happy with the final two drives of the half.
END OF 2nd QUARTER: Florida State 27, Duke 3
Start of 3rd quarter
Asack, P kickoff 14 yards to the DUKE44, on-side kick, recovered by DUKE on DUKE44. This was a perfect onside kick. Haggins made a nice effort to contest it, but it was perfect.

DUKE drive start at 14:52.
1-10 Duke 44 Renfree, S sacked for loss of 9 yards to the DUKE35 (BRADHAM,N.). 3-3, Jenkins drops into coverage, Duke doesn't pick up Bradham, Sack. Nice job by Werner and Williams to occupy blockers.
2-19 Duke 35 Thompson, J rush for no gain to the DUKE35 (MCCLOUD,A.;ERVING,C.). McCloud and Erving give no quarter. Pretty simple.
3-19 Duke 35 Renfree, S pass complete to Vernon, C for 17 yards to the FSU48. I don't like McCloud in on third & 19. That said, FSU makes Duke throw short of the sticks and this is a really tough throw on the skinny post. Successful third down IMO.
4-2 FSU 48 Renfree, S pass incomplete to Crowder, J (BROOKS,T.). FSU gets up and presses all four of Duke's wideouts. Terrene Brooks has great coverage and breaks on the quick out. He'll be a good one.
4 plays, 8 yards, 1:51 Very successful drive by FSU here.

FLORIDA STATE drive start at 13:01.
1-10 FSU 48 FREEMAN,D. rush for 8 yards to the DUKE44 (Brown, Ke). 2 back gun. Stretch to the field. Don't love Zebrie's block here, but it's not awful. Nice blocks by Pryor and Rodney Smith.
2-2 Duke 44 PRYOR,L. rush for 7 yards to the DUKE37, 1ST DOWN FSU (Daniels, M). R11 I form. Natural bubble for Pryor. No tough blocks needed.
1-10 Duke 37 FREEMAN,D. rush for 5 yards to the DUKE32 (Daniels, M). I form. Power. This really isn't all that well blocked by anyone, except for Fahrenkrug. FSU gets this gain because it catches Duke in a blitz.
2-5 Duke 32 FREEMAN,D. rush for 12 yards to the DUKE20, 1ST DOWN FSU (Canty, W;Brown, Ke). R12 Ace to the field. Inside zone to the boundary, excellent blocks by Reliford, Hart, and Christian Green. Ray Charles sees this cut and Freeman hits it. Great effort by Christian Green.
1-10 Duke 20 FREEMAN,D. rush for 7 yards to the DUKE13 (Sarmiento, S). Ace to the field. Inside zone to the field. Very nice blocks by Stork, Sanders, Fahrenkrug and especially Faircloth. Freeman only uses Stork and Faircloth and cuts this back. Nice spin move as well. Hitting the right hold really helps.
2-3 Duke 13 FREEMAN,D. rush for no gain to the DUKE13 (Foxx, J). Ace to the field, inside zone to the boundary. Hatcher for Duke is a good player and beat Stork on a slant. Front side blitz prevented a bounce to the field.
3-3 Duke 13 MANUEL,E pass complete to FREEMAN,D. for 10 yards to the DUKE3, 1ST DOWN FSU, P13 out-of-bounds (Gamble, A). Gun trips to the field. Duke brings pressure. Manuel good read, good footwork, finds Freeman on the four-yard out. Freeman does a great job here presenting a target and not running himself out of the play. Also turns upfield quickly. Great ball by EJ. Think O'Leary ran the wrong route here.
1-G Duke 03 FREEMAN,D. rush for no gain to the DUKE3 (Brown, Ke;Canty, W). Ace to the field. No movement, but no numbers. EJ needs to check this, I think. Credit Duke for a nice run blitz.
2-G Duke 03 MANUEL,E pass complete to O'LEARY,N. for 3 yards to the DUKE0, TOUCHDOWN, clock 08:26. Goal line. This is the play where tee Jones knocked the ball out of Ponder's hands last year at N.C. State. See how Freeman doesn't screw this up? He takes a wide angle. Fake is to the fullback. It's a quick fake. O'Leary nice job fighting to get open.
1-G Duke 03 HOPKINS,D. kick attempt good.
Florida State 34, Duke 3
9 plays, 52 yards, 4:39 Pretty good drive. Some good blocking, some good running, and two nice throws from EJ.

HOPKINS,D. kickoff 70 yards to the DUKE0, Crowder, J return 18 yards to the DUKE18 (HARRIS,M.). Good kickoff coverage. Very good.

DUKE drive start at 08:22.
1-10 Duke 18 Hollingsworth rush for 2 yards to the DUKE20 (MCALLISTER,D.), PENALTY DUKE holding (Helfet, C) 9 yards to the DUKE9, NO PLAY. Duke tries to block Cornellius Carradine with a tight end. He just grabs and holds on for dear life. Obvious hold.
1-19 Duke 09 Renfree, S pass complete to Hollingsworth for 4 yards to the DUKE13 (BRADHAM,N.). Swing screen to the boundary.
2-15 Duke 13 Renfree, S pass complete to Hollingsworth for 16 yards to the DUKE29, 1ST DOWN DUKE P6 (SMITH,T.;BRADHAM,N.). Excellent cut block on Jenkins while Jenkins is spinning. Rest of the D is slow to react.
1-10 Duke 29 Hollingsworth rush for no gain to the DUKE29 (HARRIS,M.). Great job to squeeze by Jernigan. Telvin Smith shoots the gap and Mike Harris cleans up.
2-10 Duke 29 Renfree, S pass complete to Hollingsworth for loss of 2 yards to the DUKE27 (HARRIS,M.). Screen into a zone blitz. Still maintain Dan Hicks is awkward in coverage. Mike Harris incredibly instinctive play to tackle the screen.
3-12 Duke 27 Renfree, S pass complete to Braxton, B for 15 yards to the DUKE42, 1ST DOWN DUKE P7 (RHODES,X.). Lamarcus Joyner comes on the blitz and misses the QB. He got there clean. Well-designed blitz and Mike Harris does a great job occupying. But Joyner must make this sack. He was unimpeded.
1-10 Duke 42 Hollingsworth rush for no gain to the DUKE42 (RHODES,X.). Xavier Rhodes makes the tackle, but Everett Dawkins makes this play. Great burst off the ball.
2-10 Duke 42 Renfree, S pass incomplete to Holliday, B (RHODES,X.). FSU brings a big blitz, plays man coverage, Rhodes does a great job playing catch-man technique after the press and bats the ball down.
3-10 Duke 42 Timeout Duke, clock 04:45.
3-10 Duke 42 Renfree, S pass incomplete, QB hurry by DAWKINS,E.. Another blitz by FSU. Not well executed as Harris and Telvin hit the same gap. Miscommunication by Duke causes pass to be overthrown wildly.
8 plays, 24 yards, 3:54

4-10 Duke 42 King, A punt 58 yards to the FSU0, touchback.

FLORIDA STATE drive start at 04:28.
1-10 FSU 20 MANUEL,E pass complete to DENT,G. for 20 yards to the FSU40, fumble forced by Greene, Z, fumble by DENT,G. recovered by DUKE Greene, Z at FSU44. Ace to the field. Bootleg to the field, nice looking start, EJ keeps eyes downfield but is late throwing to Greg Dent, and is inaccurate. Dent catches the ball and fumbles, but I put this fumble on EJ because Dent had to make a very difficult catch in what turned into tighter coverage because EJ was 1) late and 2) very high on the throw.
1 play, 24 yards, 0:13 Defense back on the field via the turnover.

DUKE drive start at 04:15.
1-10 FSU 44 Renfree, S sacked for loss of 11 yards to the DUKE45 (WILLIAMS,V.). 3-4, zone exchange, Jenkins excellent job re-routing the tight end. Vince Williams nice blitz.
2-21 Duke 45 Renfree, S pass incomplete to Crowder, J, QB hurry by JENKINS,B.. Excellent pressure by the front four, amazing job by the QB to get this out. Jenkins and Cameron Erving good job.
3-21 Duke 45 Renfree, S pass complete to Thompson, J for 14 yards to the FSU41 (WILLIAMS,V.). This I don't like. Why is Vince Williams on the field for third & 21? Perhaps Stoops wanted him to work on his coverage, because he definitely should not be out there in a non-garbage situation. Williams misses the tackle in space and gives up an extra 8 yards. Vince better not be on the field for 3rd and 5+ next week. In which case I do not care.
4-7 FSU 41 Renfree, S pass complete to Holliday, B for 9 yards to the FSU32, 1ST DOWN DUKE. P8 Greg Reid didn't play nearly as bad as some suggest, but I do put this one on him for not being alert. Too slack on the comeback against a slower player.
1-10 FSU 32 Renfree, S pass complete to Helfet, C for 3 yards to the FSU29 (REID,G.). Here, Greg Reid is right on this guy. 3 yard gain on first down is fine. Nice tackle.
2-7 FSU 29 Renfree, S pass incomplete to Crowder, J, PENALTY DUKE holding (Scott, D) 10 yards to the FSU39, NO PLAY. FSU brings the blitz and the hold here is an absolute takedown.
2-17 FSU 39 Renfree, S pass incomplete to Scott, D. FSU is in nickel coverage. Have to like the hustle by Dawkins and the awareness by Lamarcus Joyner v. the screen.
3-17 FSU 39 Renfree, S rush for 5 yards to the FSU34, out-of-bounds (LUC,J.). Jeff Luc and Telvin Smith looking good here, forcing QB to the sidelines.
4-12 FSU 34 Renfree, S pass complete to Vernon, C for 13 yards to the FSU21, 1ST DOWN DUKE. P9 FSU is clearly blitzing. Duke sees the blitz. FSU elects to blitz anyway. In a competitive situation, I'd like to see FSU check out of this. Some put this on Greg Reid, but Greg's body language suggests Jeff Luc did not get deep enough in his drop for a 4th-12 situation. I am convinced Stoops was repping some stuff here with the younger guys, because he didn't call the defense like this when FSU was stopping Duke on 5 of 6 third and longs.
1-10 FSU 21 Thompson, J rush for loss of 2 yards to the FSU23 (BROOKS,T.;HARRIS,M.). FSU just blitzing for fun now. I think. Hits this play in the backfield.
2-12 FSU 23 Renfree, S pass complete to Watkins, T for 5 yards to the FSU18 (JOYNER,L.). Another blitz, haha. Great throw and catch in tight coverage by Joyner. Wow. Can't get mad at the defense for that.
3-7 FSU 18 Renfree, S pass complete to Vernon, C for 17 yards to the FSU1, 1ST DOWN DUKE (REID,G.). P10 This is not a bad play by Greg Reid at all. In this play, Reid is required to play tight man coverage and not allow the receiver an inside release. He does his job. The weakness in this coverage? A perfectly thrown back-shoulder fade. Which is exactly what Duke's QB threw. And it still took a circus catch by the All-ACC receiver to make it work. I hope Greg got a "+" for this coverage because there is nothing wrong with the job he did here. Every defense has a weakness, and if the opponent can identify it and then make the difficult throw, you have to tip your cap. This is a good QB and FSU shut him down for most of the day. He'll have a few of these.
Another blitz, haha. Great throw and catch in tight coverage by Joyner. Wow. Can't get mad at the defense for that.
END OF 3rd QUARTER: Florida State 34, Duke 3

Start of 4th quarter, clock 15:00.
1-G FSU 01 Thompson, J rush for no gain to the FSU1 (MCALLISTER,D.;HICKS,D.).
2-G FSU 01 Thompson, J rush for 1 yard to the FSU0, TOUCHDOWN, clock 14:23.
1-G FSU 03 Snyderwine, W kick attempt good. PENALTY FSU personal foul 15 yards to the DUKE45.
Florida State 34, Duke 10
13 plays, 44 yards, 4:55 It took Duke 13 plays to go 44 yards. This is not bad defense. FSU was 1) working on some packages with some young guys and 2) making sure not to allow the big play. Duke scored here, but I do not consider this an unsuccessful drive by FSU. Duke just made some very good plays that they had not made earlier in the day. FSU's defense checked out mentally after this I think.

Asack, P kickoff 10 yards to the FSU45, on-side kick (touch by receiving team), recovered by DUKE on FSU45. I think Duke touched this before FSU did, but again, a very well executed onside kick. Duke should do this every time with that awful defense. Kid is great at onside kicks!

DUKE drive start at 14:20.
1-10 FSU 45 Hollingsworth rush for 17 yards to the FSU28, 1ST DOWN DUKE (JOYNER,L.). R11 FSU in dime, McCloud gets out of his gap, Duke runs the draw. The gameplan was obviously to let Duke run draws because Duke never runs draws.
1-10 FSU 28 Hollingsworth rush for 4 yards to the FSU24 (BRADHAM,N.). Poor tackle by Nigel Bradham. Should have been stopped for 0.
2-6 FSU 24 Renfree, S pass incomplete to Vernon, C (MCCLOUD,A.). Excellent job to tip the pass by McCloud.
3-6 FSU 24 Renfree, S pass incomplete to Braxton, B, QB hurry by JENKINS,B.. Why is Vince Williams on the field for third & 6? Duke misfires.
4-6 FSU 24 Renfree, S pass complete to Vernon, C for 19 yards to the FSU5, 1ST DOWN DUKE (MOODY,N.). P12 FSU brings a big blitz, it does not get home, and QB has time to find the All-AC receiver. Mismatch on Moody. Also, I think Rhodes was supposed to be dropping to a sideline hook zone and he didn't. Lack of focus with the big lead.
1-G FSU 05 Renfree, S pass complete to Helfet, C for 5 yards to the FSU0, TOUCHDOWN, clock 12:38. Werner needs to stuff the tight end here on the backside, but even he loses focus with the big lead. Also, the TE didn't score, but no review.
1-G FSU 03 Renfree, S pass attempt failed. Werner makes up for not holding up the tight end by batting down this pass.
Florida State 34, Duke 16
6 plays, 45 yards, 1:44 The last drive was Duke executing very well. This drive was a lack of focus by the defense.

Asack, P kickoff 9 yards to the DUKE39, ABRAM,C. return 0 yards to the DUKE39. FLORIDA STATE drive start at 12:36.

1-10 Duke 39 FREEMAN,D. rush for 18 yards to the DUKE21, 1ST DOWN FSU (Cockrell, R). R14 Zone read from 2 back gun. Nice double by Stork and Fahrenkrug, Stork gets to second level. Hart and Faircloth nice blocks as well. Very nice hard run from Freeman. His best of the day.
1-10 Duke 21 FREEMAN,D. rush for 1 yard to the DUKE20 (Brown, Ke). Zone run, Fahrenkrug needs to climb to the backer, but doesn't. However, Freeman could have made him miss. Maybe. Good block by Lonnie.
2-9 Duke 20 MANUEL,E rush for 13 yards to the DUKE7, 1ST DOWN FSU, out-of-bounds. R15 Lead option and a great block by Lonnie Pryor. Wow did he pop that backer.
1-G Duke 07 FREEMAN,D. rush for 1 yard to the DUKE6 (Gamble, A;Daniels, M). I form, inside zone, Fahrenkrug gets beat. Seemed to lose focus late. Very good run by Freeman. One of his better runs of the day even though it was only 1 yard because there wasn't a huge hole.
2-G Duke 06 MANUEL,E rush for 6 yards to the DUKE0, TOUCHDOWN, clock 09:49. QB draw, nice blocks Reliford, Kenny Shaw and Bobby Hart.
1-G Duke 03 HOPKINS,D. kick attempt good.
Florida State 41, Duke 16
5 plays, 39 yards, 2:53 FSU imposed its will on Duke, running it down the Devil's throat.

HOPKINS,D. kickoff 67 yards to the DUKE3, Kurunwune, P return 16 yards to the DUKE19 (BROOKS,T.). Excellent high kickoff. Good coverage by the young'uns

DUKE drive start at 09:43.
1-10 Duke 19 Scott, D rush for 6 yards to the DUKE25, out-of-bounds (RHODES,X.). Outside zone, Carradine takes a false step, but is also held. He'll get chewed out for that. Allowed run to bounce outside.
2-4 Duke 25 Renfree, S pass complete to Watkins, T for 11 yards to the DUKE36, 1ST DOWN DUKE, P13 out-of-bounds (HARRIS,M.). Bubble screen, Harris not aligned properly IMO. Greg Reid needs to keep outside leverage here and direct back inside to the help. He did not.
1-10 Duke 36 Scott, D rush for 15 yards to the FSU49, 1ST DOWN DUKE (PARKS,T.). R14 Carradine has this played well, controls his blocker, ready to make the tackle for 0 gain and is then held. Telvin gets wiped out (too high no leverage). Missed tackle by Joyner.
1-10 FSU 49 Scott, D rush for 1 yard to the FSU48 (CARRADINE,C.). Inside zone, Jernigan and Carradine play this very well, forcing it back.
2-9 FSU 48 Renfree, S pass incomplete to Watkins, T, PENALTY FSU pass interference (BROOKS,T.) 15 X15 yards to the FSU33, 1ST DOWN DUKE, NO PLAY. Duke runs a scissors route, Brooks does a great job to get around the pick, but is too early to arrive. Clear penalty.
1-10 FSU 33 Renfree, S pass complete to Braxton, B for 6 yards to the FSU27 (REID,G.). Greg Reid has tight coverage here. I can't really fault him for allowing this catch on a very tall throw.
2-4 FSU 27 Thompson, J rush for no gain to the FSU27 (BRADHAM,N.;REID,G.). Strong play on the inside by Anthony McCloud and Brandon Jenkins. Both defeating blocks. Jenkins is quite good.
3-4 FSU 27 Renfree, S pass incomplete to Deaver, B (HARRIS,M.). Everett Dawkins has a tremendous inside rush here, felt like he was held too. Causes QB to retreat, throw incomplete into tight coverage by Mike Harris.
4-4 FSU 27 Renfree, S pass incomplete to Braxton, B, QB hurry by WERNER,B.. Great pass rush by Brandon Jenkins, Timmy Jernigan and Bjoern Werner. QB had no chance.
8 plays, 54 yards, 3:45 FSU's defense had some mental lapses here. You cannot tell me they had the foot on the gas.
FLORIDA STATE drive start at 05:58.

1-10 FSU 27 FREEMAN,D. rush for 9 yards to the FSU36 (Hatcher, C;Canty, W). 2 WR 2 RB gun. Read or RB inside zone w/ lead blocker. All 5 offensive linemen get good blocks. Freeman hits the right hole. Nothing special on the run, but he was decisive and it is good to see the freshman hit the right hole.
2-1 FSU 36 PRYOR,L. rush for 6 yards to the FSU42, 1ST DOWN FSU (Johnson, D;Canty, W). R16 I form. Real nice cut by Lonnie as Zebrie Sanders and Jacob Fahrenkrug collapsed the right side.
1-10 FSU 42 FREEMAN,D. rush for 7 yards to the FSU49 (Daniels, M). 2 WR 2 RB gun. Read or RB outside zone w/ lead blocker to the boundary. We see true freshman Tre Jackson enter the game at right guard. He has good intensity. Really think he will be a good one for FSU. This play, though, is made by Sanders and Fahrenkrug who again make very nice blocks. Freeman hits the correct hole.
2-3 FSU 49 FREEMAN,D. rush for loss of 1 yard to the FSU48 (Gamble, A). Freshman Tre Jackson takes a poor angle on the linebacker who makes the play for the loss. Freshmen.
3-4 FSU 48 MANUEL,E rush for 28 yards to the DUKE24, 1ST DOWN FSU. R17 Fahrenkrug blows this pass pro and EJ does a great job to scramble out and get 28. Nice job sliding too. No reason to take a hit.
1-10 Duke 24 WILDER,J rush for 3 yards to the DUKE21 (Sarmiento, S;DeWalt-Ondijo). Freshman Josue Matias now in at left guard. I form, IZ to the boundary, Wilder runs with no vision and right into the back of his blockers. But credit him for running hard and not going down. Hole was there to the left.
2-7 Duke 21 WILDER,J rush for 7 yards to the DUKE14, 1ST DOWN FSU (Foxx, J). R18 Freshman Sterling Lovelady now in at left tackle. 2 WR 2 Rb gun. Stretch to the field. Nice run by Wilder. Hits the enormous hole and runs hard.
1-10 Duke 14 WILDER,J rush for 1 yard to the DUKE13 (Hazelton, C;Foxx, J), PENALTY DUKE offside 5 yards to the DUKE9, NO PLAY.
1-5 Duke 09 WILDER,J rush for 3 yards to the DUKE6 (DeWalt-Ondijo;Byas, J). I form. IZ to the boundary. Wilder runs hard for three. Freshman Austin Barron now in at center. Duke EMOL is way aggressive there.
2-2 Duke 06 Smiley, D. rush for 3 yards to the DUKE3, 1ST DOWN FSU (Hatcher, C;DeWalt-Ondijo). R19 Good to see Debrale Smiley get a carry. Jimbo plays with class and does not try to punch it in. Clock runs out.
9 plays, 70 yards, 5:58 Love how FSU finished this game with the run.
FINAL SCORE: Florida State 41, Duke 16

I like the table format alot more

One other suggestion though, Maybe Bold the end of drives and quarters? That might help break it up a bit more. Not for this week or anything, but in the future.

I look forward to film review.

I dont always get a chance to watch the replay on SunSports and break some things down myself, so I thoroughly enjoy using my lunch break to read your film review. Table format was a pleasant surprise this week! Thanks for your hard work, Bud!

You are right about Jenkins spinning to much

Me and a buddy were talking about that during the game, he spun himself out of a few plays.

I'm interested in your thoughts since you've been quiet on the issue other than your comments above.

Wouldn’t you agree that FSU was ready for the on-side kicks, but due to Scooter getting upended by 2 or 3 Dukies on the first one, and a bad bounce on the second one, we were not able to recover. I thought we were NOT caught off guard (hence the good hands team on the field), that Gran had them ready, but bad luck and good execution by Duke prevented a FSU recovery.

I mostly agree with that, yes. However, I do wonder how focused these guys were in the second half.

I think Duke getting these is a good thing because it can be used as a teaching and focus tool in the future. Coaches can say “you better pay attention. Duke burnt you twice on these.”

Yeah- it wasn't egregious

The first two were well-executed by Duke.

The 3rd kick was too short and should have been on-sides. Technically, FSU could have fair caught that one, but it was so short, there was no time.

The Jones strip

Was great. Jimbo mentioned earlier in the week that the D needed to have one guy hit then another reach in for the strip. When I saw the play it was executed perfectly, Reid hit the guy and stood him up and Jones reached it and ripped it. Need more of this.

Progress of Vince Williams & young linemen

Bud, safe to say Stoops is making a conscious effort to get VW11 more reps in 3rd and long? If so, while he didn’t show much measurable improvement, it’s nice to see it acknowledged by coach Stoops. Hopefully that means we won’t see him in those situations as often.

Also, individual play of new line arrangement – thoughts on Krug/Hart/Stork? How much of progress is Duke, and how much is genuine progress?

Offensive vs Defensive playcalling

I loved loved loved the calls by Jimbo in this game. I liked the tempo and it seemed like he was really on his game. 3rd and short runs to Lonnie…why didn’t that happen in the Clemson game instead of the 160 lb qb stabbing his elbows into the OL…we may never know. I loved the option runs with EJ although those late pitches made me nervous. Freeman looks pretty special and I am impressed with his vision for the most part. Good job of getting CGreen the ball. Overall, good stuff form the offense.
The defensive calls were a little puzzling. It was almost like a blitz drill. I like the pressure but the 3rd and 4th and longs that were converted were making me a tad restless.

Prob called the sneak to break tendancy

The whole world knows we like to ram Lonnie up there oon3rd and short. Although I could be wrong because regardless a sneak or a FB dive hit essentially the same hole.

Excellent assessment

Appreciate you taking the time to write this up.I expected and was please to see excellent team defense. The line looked great and the LBs and DBs played for the most part, responsible football. Freeman played beyond his years and exploded through the holes with purpose. Loved EJs game. The TD pass to Smith was beautiful. I was a little surprised to see him running with the ball thought and was glad to see he did take and tough hits.this is the team I expect to see the rest of the season. Responsible team football.

Im impressed with Kenny Shaw field awareness

and body controll. Alot of (young)recievers when near the sideline already have a foot out or they drifting out of bounds. Third or fourth time i seen him get 2 feet down near the sidelines with a catch. Also glad to see Greg played better than alot of people thought just great throws.

I believe it's an unnecessary step that causes you to lose ground

Could just be a step in the wrong direction. Not sure, just how I interpret it when I hear it.

It's a step in the wrong direction (usually in response to misdirection) that gives the blocker(s) a better angle or takes you out of the play.

Holding

How many times is this not going to be called? I feel like the only calls we get are when a DLman is actually tackled or beats his man so bad that the hold is obvious.

I think this is the "problem" with having a really dominant line.

They get held the majority of the time and refs aren’t going to reach for the flag on every play.

It wasn’t long ago that you didn’t need to hold the FSU line.

Directional Kicks

I’ve noticed several of D Hop’s kicks come close to going out of bounds and he gets congratulated by the coaches (quite a few last year). After the second out went out every kick went right down the middle. I think the coaches are having him do directional kicks to work on all possible returns, and I hate it! Just boot it down the middle.

I'm kind of done worrying about the redshirts

It’s time to stop being polite and start getting Real.

We’ll start redshirting when we’ve got the talent and depth to allow it

Gimme some sugar, baby.

Terrible kickoff and I think Hopkins is nursing an injury.

Buddy at church said he’s fine. Ira reported that Hopkins said it’s a technique issue with his plant foot; has happened before to him.

What are you glorifying with your life?

On Cameron's show

Jimbo said it was something to do with his plant foot being too close to the ball

I've heard elsewhere he's injured & taking something for it.

New format is a winner. How many writers contribute to the film review?

Did you ever even play the game? I guarantee I can coach my Little League team to beat yours 10 times out of 10.

Did you ever play the game, or we’re you a soccer mom’s dream!

Have to agree that D Hopkin's current problem

is more mechanical than injury related. I thought he may have been injured and I looked very closely every time he came one field in the Duke game but didn’t see any limp or other indication of injury. Although not conclusive, this made me think it might be something else.
I hope someone takes a video of a few of his kicks and sends that to his kick coach or other instructor he had in his earlier days for review. Pro golfers get out of whack and they have swing instructors. Every kid that had a realistic shot at a college scholarship went to a kicking camp.
We need D Hopkins to be 100%.

I responded to your question about FEI with I what I think is the answer in the other thread…

Thanks for this. One of the best things on the internet.

Before these film reviews were like cocaine. Now, in table form, they are like crack.

I have to agree, and it wasn’t stand out plays. It was more you didn’t see others picking on him. Sometimes not being mentioned is a good thing.
