Another horrible blown call by the officials. ACC apologized for this lack of a call. Ridiculous no call. 2-7 Md16 MANUEL,E rush left for 1 yard to the MD15 (Goree), clock 11:35. 11 gun QB sweep, Fahrenkrug is slow to handle the blitz. Would have been decent run if he makes that block.
3-6 Md15 MANUEL,E timing route pass incomplete to SMITH,R., clock 11:06. 11 gun Excellent pass pro, Rodney Smith has a post corner route, too anxious to get to the corner, doesn't give himself the space. Poor route. Excellent throw by Manuel. Smith has a TD if he sets this up better.

Drive: 5 plays, 9 yards, TOP 02:38   FSU's defense is basically perfect at this point. Not bad offense by Maryland. FSU is just whipping them.

4-12 Md29 Ferrara punt 14 yards to the MD43, out-of-bounds.   Shank, and poorly spotted. Should have been a 9-yard punt.

1-10 Md43 FREEMAN,D. rush right for 2 yards to the MD41 (Goree), clock 08:02. 20 gun Zone read, well blocked, Freeman misses the hole. Had a 5+ yard gain if he cuts it in the A-gap.

1-10 Md47 MANUEL,E sacked for loss of 7 yards to the FS46 (Francis), clock 05:13. 10 gun Manuel takes a bad, bad sack. It's first down, get the damn ball out. Faircloth misses the block, but EJ needs to throw the ball away or to his outlet.
2-17 Fs46 MANUEL,E slant pass complete to SHAW,K. for 4 yards to the 50 yardline (Hughes;Franklin), clock 04:37. 10 gun Middle screen. Timing not great here. Sloppy. Also, don't like Shaw running this.

1-10 Md19 MANUEL,E wide receiver screen pass incomplete to HAGGINS,J., clock 03:49. 11 gun Bubble off zone read play action. I put this on the usually-dependable Haggins. Catch the ball and probably score.
2-10 Md19 MANUEL,E sacked for loss of 8 yards to the MD27 (Rowson), clock 03:34. 12 twins ace Bootleg. Nick O'Leary needs to get a chip on the blitzer, but this is just some bad luck. MD on a pass blitz.

2-4 Md26 Meggett rush option right for 6 yards to the MD32, 1ST DOWN MD, out-of-bounds (HARRIS,M.), clock 02:14. 4-3 Creative option play. Faked the zone read, then ran speed option with same man.
1-10 Md32 Brown crossing pass complete to McCree for 9 yards to the MD41 (HARRIS,M.), clock 01:46. 4-3 Nice pass rush, good coverage, just a very nice play by the QB to avoid pressure and find someone.

1-20 Md32 Brown rush QR for 3 yards to the MD35 (WERNER,B.), clock 00:53. 4-2 Very well played by Anthony McCloud and Joyner. Telvin Smith a bit slow to fill.
2-17 Md35 Brown middle pass complete to Furstenburg for 21 yards to the FS44, 1ST DOWN MD (PARKS,T.;JOYNER,L.), clock 00:34. 4-2 Maryland has a good tight end, and he straight up embarrasses Telvin Smith on the double move. Good throw, FSU is held here, but why on earth is Smith jumping the 7-yard fake? Situation dumb.
1-10 Fs44 Timeout Maryland, clock 00:34.
1-10 Fs44 Brown sideline pass complete to Leak for 11 yards to the FS33, 1ST DOWN MD, out-of-bounds (REID,G.), clock 00:28. 4-2 Poor coverage by Greg Reid. Too much cushion for the comeback.

3-9 Fs32 Meggett rush option right for 10 yards to the FS22, 1ST DOWN MD, out-of-bounds (PARKS,T.), clock 00:13. 4-2 Bradham gets blocked, but Terrance Parks plays this terribly. 1. Missed tackle, 2. doesn't stop first down, 3. doesn't get him down in bounds.
1-10 Fs22 TEAM pass incomplete, clock 00:11. Previous pass was a spike to stop clock.
2-10 Fs22 Brown middle pass complete to Leak for 13 yards to the FS9, 1ST DOWN MD (RHODES,X.), clock 00:04. 4-2 Making sure not to allow the touchdown. MD already in FG range.

    Florida State 17, Maryland 3
Drive: 14 plays, 75 yards, TOP 02:39   First goal is to now allow the touchdown, so good there. But FSU should have stopped MD. Players not playing smart.
    Florida State 17, Maryland 3

Inside, find the second half.

1-10 Fs35 PENALTY FS false start (FAIRCLOTH,G.) 5 yards to the FS30, clock 13:44. 11 gun Lack of focus. I realize the stadium was dead and FSU had control of the game, but this was not good.
1-15 Fs30 THOMAS,J. rush over right end for 1 yard to the FS31 (Mackall), clock 13:26. 11 pistol Jermaine Thomas collides with EJ on the handoff, Nick O'Leary poor block. Overextended and beaten by spin move.
2-14 Fs31 MANUEL,E sideline pass complete to REED,B. for 9 yards to the FS40 (Chism), clock 12:53. 11 gun Good decision to get back to third-medium. Curl route. Good throw and protection.
3-5 Fs40 MANUEL,E crossing pass complete to SHAW,K. for 2 yards to the FS42 (Chism), clock 12:17. 10 gun trips field Poor throw by EJ. Behind Shaw, forcing Shaw to stop and allowing the corner to make the tackle.
Drive: 3 plays, 7 yards, TOP 01:56   Two of the three plays were errors by FSU in my estimation, but MD was playing decent defense here.

4-3 Fs42 POWELL,S. punt 58 yards to the MD0, touchback.   Terrible. Just awful.

1-10 Md20 Brown sideline pass incomplete to Leak, dropped pass, clock 11:42. 4-3 Zone read rollout, comeback route to boundary dropped.
2-10 Md20 Brown sacked for loss of 5 yards to the MD15 (WERNER,B.), clock 11:28. 4-3 Werner just beats a double team. Nice play.
3-15 Md15 Brown rush quarterback scramble for 5 yards to the MD20 (BRADHAM,N.), PENALTY FS personal foul (BRADHAM,N.) 15 yards to the MD35, 1ST DOWN MD, clock 10:59. Injured player for Maryland is #16-Brown. 4-2 Werner is held. Egregious hold. Ridiculous hold. Scramble, QB makes the dumbass move of sliding a half-step away from an already tackling Nigel Bradham. Bradham is flagged. Nothing wrong with this hit, but Bradham might have taunted. In any case, FSU is screwed by the refs twice on this play. The hold on Werner was crazy.
1-10 Md35 PENALTY MD false start (Dill) 5 yards to the MD30, clock 10:59.
1-15 Md30 O'Brien FY pass incomplete to McCree, clock 10:53. 4-2 Long ball, Greg Reid in excellent coverage.

3-15 Md30 O'Brien sideline pass complete to McCree for 15 yards to the MD45, 1ST DOWN MD (JONES,C.;PARKS,T.). 4-1 Greg Reid goes for the interception and missed, Christian Jones missed tackle. Poor defense.
1-10 Md45 Meggett rush up middle for 1 yard to the MD46 (BRADHAM,N.), clock 10:08. 4-3 Nicely played run by Anthony McCloud.
2-9 Md46 O'Brien sideline pass complete to McCree for 15 yards to the FS39, 1ST DOWN MD (JONES,C.), clock 10:00. 4-3 Xavier Rhodes missed tackle, turning 7-yard out into long play.
1-10 Fs39 O'Brien slant pass incomplete to Leak, dropped pass, clock 09:51. 4-2 Pass just dropped.
2-10 Fs39 O'Brien throw away pass incomplete, QB hurry by JERNIGAN,T., clock 09:45. 4-2 Excellent pass rush and coverage. O'Brien throws it away.
3-10 Fs39 O'Brien sacked for loss of 20 yards to the MD41 (SMITH,T.), PENALTY MD intentional grounding (O'Brien) 0 yards to the MD41, clock 09:35. 4-2 Excellent zone blitz, both Smith and Harris come free, Also excellent by Dawkins and Jernigan. Forcing the grounding.
Drive: 11 plays, 21 yards, TOP 02:18   Not a good, disciplined series by FSU. In fairness, they hadn't prepped for O'Brien. Excellent called series by Stoops though.

4-30 Md41 Ferrara punt 31 yards to the FS28, downed.   Not much of a punt, ha-ha.

1-10 Fs28 FLORIDA STATE drive start 09:30.
1-10 Fs28 THOMAS,J. rush left for 7 yards to the FS35 (Vellano), clock 09:13. 21 gun pony Zone read to the boundary, well blocked by Zebrie Sanders and Jacob Fahrenkrug
2-3 Fs35 MANUEL,E bubble screen pass complete to SMITH,R. for 19 yards to the MD46, 1ST DOWN FS (McDougle), clock 08:45. 21 gun twins field Bubble off play action to Rodney. Good blocking effort by Bert Reed.
1-10 Md46 MANUEL,E rush option right for 3 yards to the MD43 (Francis), clock 08:12. 21 I twins field Lead option to the boundary, EJ cuts it up.
2-7 Md43 MANUEL,E slant pass complete to SHAW,K. for 8 yards to the MD35, 1ST DOWN FS, PENALTY MD pass interference declined, clock 07:49. 10 gun Double slants, poor throw and poor decision by EJ. Pass tipped, Shaw catches it off the tip. Luck.
1-10 Md35 THOMAS,J. rush right for 35 yards to the MD0, 1ST DOWN FS, TOUCHDOWN, clock 07:40. 20 gun Stretch to the boundary, Excellent blocks by Garrett Faircloth, Bobby Hart, Lonnie Pryor and Bert Reed. Jermaine Thomas ran hard. Maryland is out gapped. The fake bubble held the linebacker for a second.
    HOPKINS,D. kick attempt good.
    Florida State 24, Maryland 3
Drive: 5 plays, 72 yards, TOP 01:50   Decent drive, but nothing really special. Execution was the difference.

HOPKINS,D. kickoff 70 yards to the MD0, touchback.   Nice kick.

1-10 Md20 O'Brien sideline pass complete to Tyler for 9 yards to the MD29 (JONES,C.), clock 07:22. 4-3 Flare pass to the receiver, double moved Christian Jones. Excellent touch
2-1 Md29 Meggett rush over left end for no gain to the MD29 (WILLIAMS,V.), clock 06:47. 4-3 Counter, Bradham shoots the gap, Jenkins holds ground, Jones holds the edge, Vince Williams cleans up. THAT IS GREAT FUNDAMENTAL FOOTBALL.
3-1 Md29 Timeout Maryland, clock 06:19.
3-1 Md29 Meggett rush right for 1 yard to the MD30 (CARRADINE,C.), PENALTY MD holding (White) 9 yards to the MD20, NO PLAY, clock 06:14. 4-3 Jernigan held badly
3-10 Md20 PENALTY FS offside defense (MCALLISTER,D.) 5 yards to the MD25, clock 05:50. 4-2 Giving it right back. Think MD moved first
3-5 Md25 O'Brien FY pass complete to McCree for 69 yards to the FS6, 1ST DOWN MD (REID,G.), clock 05:16. 4-2 FSU super aggressive here. Greg Reid has tight coverage, O'Brien throws up a prayer, Greg is out jumped. This really isn't that bad of a play. But Greg needed to find a way to get him down and hold this to 30 yards, not 69.
1-G Fs06 O'Brien rush for loss of 4 yards to the FS10, fumble by O'Brien recovered by MD Cary FS8, clock 04:25. 4-2 FSU's luck (and it is purely luck) recovering fumbles this year is just silly. A fumble is kicked five yards forward and recovered by MD. Ridiculous.
2-G Fs08 O'Brien slant pass complete to McCree for 3 yards to the FS5 (WILLIAMS,V.), clock 03:50. 4-2 Greg Reid is slow to react here, probably because he just gave up the catch. Needs to forget about the big catch and make this play.
3-G Fs05 O'Brien rush QR for 5 yards to the FS0, TOUCHDOWN, clock 03:31. 4-2 Zone read with O'Brien? Can't be expecting that. Tip the cap to Maryland. Hicks overplayed the give.
    Ferrara kick attempt good.
    Florida State 24, Maryland 10
Drive: 6 plays, 80 yards, TOP 04:15   Give Maryland credit here. They hit a prayer pass and some other tough throws as well.

Ferrara kickoff 58 yards to the FS12, WILLIAMS,K. return 33 yards to the FS45 (Boykins).   Needs better vision

1-10 Fs45 MANUEL,E FY pass incomplete to REED,B., clock 03:19. 21 gun A lot of people bitched in the comments that FSU didn't run he, but MD has 8 in the box, FSU has a comfortable lead, and FSU has the numbers to throw here. Good defense by Maryland of showing a run-stopping look and then bailing. Just bad luck timing wise.
2-10 Fs45 MANUEL,E sideline pass incomplete to SHAW,K., clock 03:13. 10 gun EJ on the run throws inaccurately to Shaw on the sideline.
3-10 Fs45 MANUEL,E sacked for loss of 10 yards to the FS35 (Bowers), clock 02:56. 10 gun trips field If you forgot that FSU had a freshman right tackle, this is a good reminder. However, EJ held this ball too long. Have to feel that rush. Sack is both on EJ and Hart.
Drive: 3 plays, minus 10 yards, TOP 00:58   Bad luck on the first play, poor pass blocking on the second, mixed responsibility on the third.

4-20 Fs35 POWELL,S. punt 49 yards to the MD16, Logan return 4 yards to the MD20 (BRADHAM,N.).   Pretty good punt job.

1-10 Md20 Pickett rush option right for 7 yards to the MD27, out-of-bounds (PARKS,T.), clock 02:22. 4-3 Parks is slow to fill.
2-3 Md27 Pickett rush over left guard for 2 yards to the MD29 (SMITH,T.;WERNER,B.), clock 01:55. 4-3 Zone read, very well played.
3-1 Md29 O'Brien rush quarterback sneak for 2 yards to the MD31, 1ST DOWN MD. 4-3 whatever
1-10 Md31 O'Brien sideline pass incomplete to McCree (RHODES,X.), clock 01:19. 4-3 Excellent pressure from Jenkins, Rhodes nice coverage on the 10-yard curl.
2-10 Md31 Pickett rush option left for 1 yard to the MD32 (BROOKS,T.), clock 01:01. 4-2 Tremendous individual effort to stone and get off the block on the option. Also, terrible route by the running back.
3-9 Md32 O'Brien sideline pass complete to Leak for 4 yards to the MD36 (RHODES,X.), clock 00:18. 4-2 Blitz forces quick throw, Rhodes solid tackle.
Drive: 6 plays, 16 yards, TOP 02:35   Very solid defensive effort again.
    Florida State 24, Maryland 10

4-5 Md36 Start of 4th quarter, clock 15:00.

4-5 Md36 Ferrara punt 33 yards to the FS31, downed. Punt was ruled dead when it hit a Maryland player.   Maryland can't do math good and punts. LOL

1-10 Fs31 FREEMAN,D. rush right for 12 yards to the FS43, 1ST DOWN FS (Till;Francis), clock 14:45. 20 gun pony Devonta Freeman was pulled earlier for missing a hole. Doesn't miss this time, great run. Hart, Faircloth, Thomas, Sanders also nice blocks. Stretch play.
1-10 Fs43 FREEMAN,D. rush right for 6 yards to the FS49 (Francis), clock 14:31. Injured player for Maryland is #96-Francis. 20 gun pony Same play, bubble fake, stretch to the field. Nice blocks by Hart, Shaw, and Thomas. Freeman runs it inside out. Well done.
2-4 Fs49 MANUEL,E rush option left for 8 yards to the MD43, 1ST DOWN FS (Drakeford), clock 14:15. 22 i Lead option to the field. Maryland is out gapped.
1-10 Md43 THOMAS,J. rush over left guard for 7 yards to the MD36 (Rowson), clock 13:44. 20 gun pony Zone read, good initial blocks by Faircloth and Hart on the double, but they don't peel off.
2-3 Md36 THOMAS,J. rush over left tackle for 1 yard to the MD35 (Drakeford), clock 13:20. 20 gun pony Zone read, good block Zebrie, Fahrenkrug and Stork get the double but don't pick up the backer.
3-2 Md35 Timeout Florida State, clock 12:56.   Can't get lined up right. Again. Jimbo is livid. EJ needs to do a better job here.
3-2 Md35 Timeout Florida State, clock 12:56.   Can't get lined up right. Again. Jimbo is livid. EJ needs to do a better job here.
3-2 Md35 THOMAS,J. rush up middle for 5 yards to the MD30, 1ST DOWN FS (Till), clock 12:50. 22 i Inside zone, excellent block Bobby Hart, Jermaine doesn't dance, hits backside B gap. Excellent run.
1-10 Md30 THOMAS,J. rush left for 25 yards to the MD5, 1ST DOWN FS, out-of-bounds (Till), clock 12:27. 20 gun pony Zone read to the boundary. Excellent blocks by everyone, especially Freeman. Thomas no nonsense running. Great job by Fahrenkrug goes to the second level.
1-G Md05 THOMAS,J. rush over left tackle for 1 yard to the MD4 (Mackall), clock 11:57. 20 gun pony Same play. EJ needs to keep this ball, or better yet, check out of this play. Maryland had it covered by the #s.
2-G Md04 PENALTY FS false start (STORK,B.) 5 yards to the MD9, clock 11:34.   That's three. Lack of focus.
2-G Md09 MANUEL,E rush quarterback draw for 3 yards to the MD6 (Hughes), clock 10:56. 11 gun ace FSU blocks this well, EJ does not read the right hole.
3-G Md06 MANUEL,E crossing pass incomplete to GREEN,C., clock 10:19. 10 gun Play action, EJ can't find anyone.
4-G Md06 HOPKINS,D. field goal attempt from 24 GOOD, clock 10:16.
    Florida State 27, Maryland 10
Drive: 11 plays, 63 yards, TOP 04:42   Pretty good drive. Think Jimbo was angry with EJ and went more to the run.

HOPKINS,D. kickoff 70 yards to the MD0, Logan return 24 yards to the MD24 (HARRIS,M.).   Not great

1-10 Md24 O'Brien throw away pass incomplete to McCree, clock 10:05. 4-3 Sprint out, Carradine good leverage, Greg Reid good coverage.
2-10 Md24 O'Brien sideline pass complete to Leak for 7 yards to the MD31 (RHODES,X.), clock 09:44. 4-3 Timing route comeback, good throw and catch, better tackle.
3-3 Md31 O'Brien sacked for loss of 8 yards to the MD23 (CARRADINE,C.), clock 09:19. 4-2 Quick pass game, FSU covers the short stuff very well, Carradine whips his tackle. Excellent defense. Also very good by Jernigan and Cameron Erving.
Drive: 3 plays, minus 1 yards, TOP 01:26   Can't do much better than that

4-11 Md23 Ferrara punt 37 yards to the FS40, fair catch by REID,G..   Smart fair catch.

1-10 Fs40 FREEMAN,D. rush left for loss of 2 yards to the FS38 (Rowson), clock 08:23. 20 gun pony Stretch to the boundary. Stork poor angle on the backer. Freeman tries to reverse field. Dumb idea. Huge block by EJ. VIDEO
2-12 Fs38 FREEMAN,D. rush over right guard for 5 yards to the FS43 (Vellano;Goree), clock 07:30. 22 i Inside zone. Nice job by the G-C-G. Good push
3-7 Fs43 FREEMAN,D. rush right for 10 yards to the MD47, 1ST DOWN FS (Goree), clock 07:04. 11 Gun power from gun. Excellent blocks by Hart, Faircloth, Fahrenkrug. Nice hard running.
1-10 Md47 FREEMAN,D. rush up middle for 6 yards to the MD41 (Drakeford), clock 06:33. 11 ace Inside zone, Zebrie washes the backside, Reliford nice, Freeman no-nonsense hard running.
2-4 Md41 FREEMAN,D. rush left for 41 yards to the MD0, 1ST DOWN FS, TOUCHDOWN, clock 05:57. 11 ace Stretch to the field. Nice block by Christian Green downfield, Truly great combo by Sanders and Fahrenkrug, Freeman makes one man miss with a nice hard cut. Excellent run.
    HOPKINS,D. kick attempt good.
    Florida State 34, Maryland 10
Drive: 5 plays, 60 yards, TOP 02:53   Maryland's defense was tired, had lost a player, and FSU smelled blood.

HOPKINS,D. kickoff 63 yards to the MD7, Pickett return 18 yards to the MD25 (STEVENS,T.).   Super high kickoff. Interesting. Good coverage.

Rec'd as well.

Film review, while stellar to begin with, has ascended a couple more notches with this. Fantastic!

I think it's lazy

If you put the big plays in, ya may as well go ahead and plug every single play, offensively and defensively.

Seriously…How much longer could that have taken? 3, 4 days max?

Where’s the commitment?

re: the last clip

I also want to give props to Faircloth on his block. You could really see on the replay how he drove his man ~10-12 yards down the field to not allow him to pursue from the backside and prevent Freeman’s long TD.

Great Stuff. Could you please...

Put in a key or something to detail the offensive formations? I understand ace, etc, but what do the numbers mean exactly? And pony is our split back shotgun right?

by seminoleit on Oct 26, 2011 4:25 PM EDT reply actions

The numbers reference the # of backs and the # of tight ends.

2-1 is 2 backs | 1 tight end

PONY is 2 running backs, and I note pony to differentiate between regular 2 back gun (with a fullback) and PONY, which has two running/tailbacks.

Anyone notice our WR blocking?

Seems like Dawsey has them all throwing up their arms after the ball carrier passes the blocked man to make sure we don’t get any more phantom WR holding calls.

Good practice. Anything to keep the enemy (other teams, and officials) honest.

He actually did TOO good of a job haha.

If you watch the clip, he de-cleats the DE so bad that he gets in the way of Faircloth blocking the DT.

Also, watching this play, I wonder if FSU practices against linemen stunts, because we still seem to be having a lot of trouble with them.

by FSUActuary on Oct 26, 2011 4:33 PM EDT up reply actions

He looked gassed and i think he came off the field for the next play

But that’s the hustle you love to see. And props to G5 too for running down the receiver on a shallow angle..and staying on the field for the rest of the drive.

He’s been a half second behind the snap a lot.

NOL was in Jimbo's doghouse based on BE's comments

I think NOL is going to be one fine player before his career is over but he was my co-pick for FSU freshman of the year and I’m beginning to doubt that is where he’ll end up.
Just one hell of a job again on this. It is my favorite part of the whole TN experience.

That means less UM fans screaming F-bombs, cause they think yelling F**K is so cool. Maybe I can bring my kids to this game after all.

Incredible work

really setting the standard with this weekly piece IMO. & thanks to the NWN for the video clips!

From many comments, sounds like EJ has a lot of room for improvement. Also appreciate a few plays (3 by my count) which explained away what the casual observer would probably attribute to poor play-calling by Jimbo. Thanks.

Couple things:

  • I know it was garbage time and in most cases I wouldn’t care, but in the last O series (or 2) our OL was all Freshmen… did you analyze these plays? Love to hear what you thought of them…
  • Suggestion: might want to include a #ing key, which assigns a unique # to each play which would allow people to easily refer to, discuss, etc., a certain play.

Again, incredible work.

Championship!

I did. My conclusion is that they ran basically three or four run plays, and FSU’s freshmen wore out their freshmen.

Good idea on the numbering

Bud

are you going to give us your thoughts on what “appears” to be improved line play? Because you palyed the postiion I’d like your take on certain players as well. For example, Krug doesn’t seem to be teh liability he was back in September. B Hart seems to be improving. Faircloth looks like he’s proving his worth, etc.
You promised.
One other thing…on some of the sacks you indicate EJ should have gotten rid of the ball. I really like this kind of comment and hope you keep doing it as we may be able to differentiate between a sack that is all on the O line or the rbs and the so called “coverage” sack.
Last Sunday, C Ponder put on a show on how to avoid the sack by using his feet and his head. This is the type of sack analysisI think a lot of fans would appreciate.

by law74 on Oct 26, 2011 5:25 PM EDT up reply actions

you can count to five on the one Hart was beat on

Tomahawk Nation Nole-Holds-Barred Analysis of FSU Sports!

by Bud Elliott on Oct 26, 2011 5:43 PM EDT up reply actions

If 2.8 seconds is the magic number

for getting rid of the ball I guess it’s safe to say that one was on EJ (unless you’re a very fast counter).
Are you going to make some remarks about what appears to be improved line play?
FSU now ranks #86 in average yards gained per game and #69 in average yards gained per rush play (a not too shabby 4.0 which includes 20 friggin’ sacks). Two games ago we were about #110 in the first category and #105 in the other.
It is just an impression, but I have a feeling that we could count 8-10 sacks on the qb’s, 2-4 on the rbs, and the remainder on the line. If you’re not inclined to share your thoughts on the O line at this time I think we’d all like to hear your thoughts (or those of any other staff member that is involved in film review) on the numbers I threw out.

Adding the video clips was great. As an aside, love how on JT’s td he doesn’t get more than 4 yds deep into the end zone because he’s turning back to celebrate w/the team. Really happy that he was running like it was 2009. And that chip decleater? Wow.

Is it me or is EJ too frequently getting too deep on his drops?

Seems like most of his problems in the pocket happen when he gives the DE’s an angle around/past our OTs. Perfect example being the Reed rub route shown above.

Surprising if this is a problem, though, as it seems like this would be step 1a in QB development…. or maybe it’s a bad habit he’s picked up from the first few games with really bad interior blocking?

by arrdub on Oct 26, 2011 5:24 PM EDT reply actions

it seemed to me on the clip of the sack that Hart gave up that ej kind of drifted into it. it doesn’t really look like it’s supposed to be a designed roll out. i think if ej steps up and stays w/in the pocket the de would have passed wide behind him.

by nole country for old men on Oct 26, 2011 5:36 PM EDT up reply actions

He does this alot, IMO

He also has issues with stepping back up into his pocket on some occasions. It makes the OL look bad on some plays.

Greg Reid offside on FG attempt

This may not make any sense, and I don’t think this is exactly what Greg was going for, but is it possible that there could be an unorthodox strategy in being intentionally offside in similar spots?

Let’s say it is the end of a half, the offense is in the redzone, and there is enough time on the clock for 1 or 2 throws into the endzone followed by a field goal attempt. The defense could be intentionally offside, “recover” the shotgun snap, and run around like our FG team did and waste the entire rest of the half.

The offense would get 5 yards of course, and an untimed down, but the defense would successfully eliminate all of their throws into the endzone.

I dont find it hard to imagine

That he was told to try to jump the snap; if he get flagged they rekick and lose time and if he doesn’t he gets a good shot to block the FG.

I enjoy the rebiews ebery week, vut I would like to see the quarters chopped up and released a day apart.

I also thought it would ve a good idea to switch all the "b"s with "v"s and bice bersa. I think i’m on to something vig.

BTW, anyone notice that our S&P+ defensive (and overall) ranking dropped (ranked 13th now), despite this performance against UMD. I’m thinking it was all in the opponent adjustment as 3 out of our 5 D-1 opponents lost.. OU, Duke, LA-Monroe, all lost.

by TuckNole on Oct 26, 2011 6:57 PM EDT reply actions

Meant to add that our FEI and F/+ rating rose overall.

Makes sense from a drive based metric, as UMD had a lot of drives go for less than 20 total yards.

by TuckNole on Oct 26, 2011 6:59 PM EDT up reply actions

I did notice and my thoughts on it are exactly the same as yours.

What’s also interesting, despite the fact big plays/quick strikes have really hurt in a few games, is FEI thinks limiting explosive drives is one of our stronger suits…..and giving up methodical drives is our weakest.

I'm also wondering just how much that 69 yard pass hurt our S&P rating.

That’s a big PPP jump, from that one play.

Isn't that pretty much what we expected though?

Bend but don’t break?

Have to think that early season 3rd down struggles contribute to this trend as well.

No, I wouldn't have expected that.

From memory, I would’ve thought we’d done pretty poorly on limiting big plays/quick strikes and not been terrible (#70, I think) in limiting the sustained drives.

Videos are an excellent addition

Watching Haggins block two players on the same play was one of the highlights of the game for me.

Devonta’s and Jermaine’s touchdown runs were impressive because you could see them both utilizing good vision along with hard running.

Also, the execution of the offensive line is noticeably better.

Absolutely excellent...

Considering a power outage kept me from DVR’ing the game, this is the next best thing… Love the analysis, commentary, and the video addition is wonderful.

THANK YOU!!

Starting to see glimpses of some truly elite play on both sides…Just need consistency, and please LORD help with fair officiating.

I don’t think it has been discussed too much in detail yet, but why are we not seeing more K. Williams at safety? Someone mentioned he hasn’t learned all the schemes but at some point shouldn’t we put him out there at least in garbage time? I always thought you play your best player available.

by Happypedro25 on Oct 27, 2011 9:03 AM EDT reply actions

It's been discussed a copious amount. But..

I think Terrence Brooks is very, very, close to him athletically. And way ahead of him scheme wise. I like Brooks and wouldn’t mind seeing him on the field more. Karlos has a long way to go IMO.
