| 2-10 | Md20 | Brown sacked for loss of 5 yards to the MD15 (WERNER,B.), clock 11:28. | 4-3 | Werner just beats a double team. Nice play. |
| 3-15 | Md15 | Brown rush quarterback scramble for 5 yards to the MD20 (BRADHAM,N.), PENALTY FS personal foul (BRADHAM,N.) 15 yards to the MD35, 1ST DOWN MD, clock 10:59. Injured player for Maryland is #16-Brown. | 4-2 | Werner is held. Egregious hold. Ridiculous hold. Scramble, QB makes the dumbass move of sliding a half-step away from an already tackling Nigel Bradham. Bradham is flagged. Nothing wrong with this hit, but Bradham might have taunted. In any case, FSU is screwed by the refs twice on this play. The hold on Werner was crazy. |

| 3-10 | Md20 | PENALTY FS offside defense (MCALLISTER,D.) 5 yards to the MD25, clock 05:50. | 4-2 | Giving it right back. Think MD moved first |
| 3-5 | Md25 | O'Brien FY pass complete to McCree for 69 yards to the FS6, 1ST DOWN MD (REID,G.), clock 05:16. | 4-2 | FSU super aggressive here. Greg Reid has tight coverage, O'Brien throws up a prayer, Greg is out jumped. This really isn't that bad of a play. But Greg needed to find a way to get him down and hold this to 30 yards, not 69. |
| 1-G | Fs06 | O'Brien rush for loss of 4 yards to the FS10, fumble by O'Brien recovered by MD Cary FS8, clock 04:25. | 4-2 | FSU's luck (and it is purely luck) recovering fumbles this year is just silly. A fumble is kicked five yards forward and recovered by MD. Ridiculous. |

| 1-10 | Fs45 | MANUEL,E FY pass incomplete to REED,B., clock 03:19. | 21 gun | A lot of people bitched in the comments that FSU didn't run he, but MD has 8 in the box, FSU has a comfortable lead, and FSU has the numbers to throw here. Good defense by Maryland of showing a run-stopping look and then bailing. Just bad luck timing wise. |
| 2-10 | Fs45 | MANUEL,E sideline pass incomplete to SHAW,K., clock 03:13. | 10 gun | EJ on the run throws inaccurately to Shaw on the sideline. |
| 3-10 | Fs45 | MANUEL,E sacked for loss of 10 yards to the FS35 (Bowers), clock 02:56. | 10 gun trips field | If you forgot that FSU had a freshman right tackle, this is a good reminder. However, EJ held this ball too long. Have to feel that rush. Sack is both on EJ and Hart. |

Rec'd as well.
Film review, while stellar to begin with, has ascended a couple more notches with this. Fantastic!
I think it's lazy
If you put the big plays in, ya may as well go ahead and plug every single play, offensively and defensively.
Seriously…How much longer could that have taken? 3, 4 days max?
Where’s the commitment?

re: the last clip
I also want to give props to Faircloth on his block. You could really see on the replay how he drove his man ~10-12 yards down the field to not allow him to pursue from the backside and prevent Freeman’s long TD.

Great Stuff. Could you please...
Put in a key or something to detail the offensive formations? I understand ace, etc, but what do the numbers mean exactly? And pony is our split back shotgun right?
Roses are red, Violets are blue, If it wears orange, Kill it.
The numbers reference the # of backs and the # of tight ends.
2-1 is 2 backs | 1 tight end
PONY is 2 running backs, and I note pony to differentiate between regular 2 back gun (with a fullback) and PONY, which has two running/tailbacks.

Also, Jimbo has called that “pony” since at least the 2008 season, and probably before before.

Anyone notice our WR blocking?
Seems like Dawsey has them all throwing up their arms after the ball carrier passes the blocked man to make sure we don’t get any more phantom WR holding calls.
p/k/a Blujay
Def. saw Reed do this on Thomas' long TD run.
Good practice. Anything to keep the enemy (other teams, and officials) honest.
he had a handful of jersey right before that

saw that too..
That was a run by Thomas, correct? Coulda made a third if he wanted to..
Saw Peter Warrick play once. The rest is history...
I loved Jermaine's block!
and he looked like the fastest person out there other than joyner on that run down where g5 got out jumped.
D-Hop has tiger blood
He actually did TOO good of a job haha.
If you watch the clip, he de-cleats the DE so bad that he gets in the way of Faircloth blocking the DT.
Also, watching this play, I wonder if FSU practices against linemen stunts, because we still seem to be having a lot of trouble with them.
He looked gassed and i think he came off the field for the next play
But that’s the hustle you love to see. And props to G5 too for running down the receiver on a shallow angle..and staying on the field for the rest of the drive.

NOL was in Jimbo's doghouse based on BE's comments
I think NOL is going to be one fine player before his career is over but he was my co-pick for FSU freshman of the year and I’m beginning to doubt that is where he’ll end up.
Just one hell of a job again on this. It is my favorite part of the whole TN experience.

That means less UM fans screaming F-bombs, cause they think yelling F**K is so cool. Maybe I can bring my kids to this game after all.

Incredible work
really setting the standard with this weekly piece IMO. & thanks to the NWN for the video clips!
From many comments, sounds like EJ has a lot of room for improvement. Also appreciate a few plays (3 by my count) which explained away what the casual observer would probably attribute to poor play-calling by Jimbo. Thanks.
Couple things:
- I know it was garbage time and in most cases I wouldn’t care, but in the last O series (or 2) our OL was all Freshmen… did you analyze these plays? Love to hear what you thought of them…
- Suggestion: might want to include a #ing key, which assigns a unique # to each play which would allow people to easily refer to, discuss, etc., a certain play.
Again, incredible work.
Championship!
I did. My conclusion is that they ran basically three or four run plays, and FSU’s freshmen wore out their freshmen.
Good idea on the numbering

Bud
are you going to give us your thoughts on what “appears” to be improved line play? Because you palyed the postiion I’d like your take on certain players as well. For example, Krug doesn’t seem to be teh liability he was back in September. B Hart seems to be improving. Faircloth looks like he’s proving his worth, etc.
You promised.
One other thing…on some of the sacks you indicate EJ should have gotten rid of the ball. I really like this kind of comment and hope you keep doing it as we may be able to differentiate between a sack that is all on the O line or the rbs and the so called “coverage” sack.
Last Sunday, C Ponder put on a show on how to avoid the sack by using his feet and his head. This is the type of sack analysisI think a lot of fans would appreciate.
you can count to five on the one Hart was beat on
Follow @TomahawkNation
Tomahawk Nation Nole-Holds-Barred Analysis of FSU Sports!
If 2.8 seconds is the magic number
for getting rid of the ball I guess it’s safe to say that one was on EJ (unless you’re a very fast counter).
Are you going to make some remarks about what appears to be improved line play?
FSU now ranks #86 in average yards gained per game and #69 in average yards gained per rush play (a not too shabby 4.0 which includes 20 friggin’ sacks). Two games ago we were about #110 in the first category and #105 in the other.
It is just an impression, but I have a feeling that we could count 8-10 sacks on the qb’s, 2-4 on the rbs, and the remainder on the line. If you’re not inclined to share your thoughts on the O line at this time I think we’d all like to hear your thoughts (or those of any other staff member that is involved in film review) on the numbers I threw out.
Yes i will at some point

Lamarcus Joyner is really really fast
Would be my co defensive MVP so far this season with Bjorn Werner as far as their consistency has been this season
I remember that play live and my jaw literally dropped! Reminded me of Darrell Green

Yeah, I was referring to his speed/coming out of nowhere.

That. Was. Awesome.
Adding the video clips was great. As an aside, love how on JT’s td he doesn’t get more than 4 yds deep into the end zone because he’s turning back to celebrate w/the team. Really happy that he was running like it was 2009. And that chip decleater? Wow.

Is it me or is EJ too frequently getting too deep on his drops?
Seems like most of his problems in the pocket happen when he gives the DE’s an angle around/past our OTs. Perfect example being the Reed rub route shown above.
Surprising if this is a problem, though, as it seems like this would be step 1a in QB development…. or maybe it’s a bad habit he’s picked up from the first few games with really bad interior blocking?
it seemed to me on the clip of the sack that Hart gave up that ej kind of drifted into it. it doesn’t really look like it’s supposed to be a designed roll out. i think if ej steps up and stays w/in the pocket the de would have passed wide behind him.

He does this alot, IMO
He also has issues with stepping back up into his pocket on some occasions. It makes the OL look bad on some plays.

Hart's reaction to the bad block and sack is priceless
You can almost see the “Oh shiza Trickett’s gonna kill me”
Lol I thought that was hilarious too.

The missed call on the horse-collar call is hilarious
At the end some guy yells out “h**y s**t”.
Greg Reid offside on FG attempt
This may not make any sense, and I don’t think this is exactly what Greg was going for, but is it possible that there could be an unorthodox strategy in being intentionally offside in similar spots?
Let’s say it is the end of a half, the offense is in the redzone, and there is enough time on the clock for 1 or 2 throws into the endzone followed by a field goal attempt. The defense could be intentionally offside, “recover” the shotgun snap, and run around like our FG team did and waste the entire rest of the half.
The offense would get 5 yards of course, and an untimed down, but the defense would successfully eliminate all of their throws into the endzone.
I dont find it hard to imagine
That he was told to try to jump the snap; if he get flagged they rekick and lose time and if he doesn’t he gets a good shot to block the FG.

I hab a suggestion
I enjoy the rebiews ebery week, vut I would like to see the quarters chopped up and released a day apart.
I also thought it would ve a good idea to switch all the "b"s with "v"s and bice bersa. I think i’m on to something vig.

BTW, anyone notice that our S&P+ defensive (and overall) ranking dropped (ranked 13th now), despite this performance against UMD. I’m thinking it was all in the opponent adjustment as 3 out of our 5 D-1 opponents lost.. OU, Duke, LA-Monroe, all lost.
Meant to add that our FEI and F/+ rating rose overall.
Makes sense from a drive based metric, as UMD had a lot of drives go for less than 20 total yards.
I did notice and my thoughts on it are exactly the same as yours.
What’s also interesting, despite the fact big plays/quick strikes have really hurt in a few games, is FEI thinks limiting explosive drives is one of our stronger suits…..and giving up methodical drives is our weakest.

I'm also wondering just how much that 69 yard pass hurt our S&P rating.
That’s a big PPP jump, from that one play.

Isn't that pretty much what we expected though?
Bend but don’t break?
Have to think that early season 3rd down struggles contribute to this trend as well.

No, I wouldn't have expected that.
From memory, I would’ve thought we’d done pretty poorly on limiting big plays/quick strikes and not been terrible (#70, I think) in limiting the sustained drives.

Videos are an excellent addition
Watching Haggins block two players on the same play was one of the highlights of the game for me.
Devonta’s and Jermaine’s touchdown runs were impressive because you could see them both utilizing good vision along with hard running.
Also, the execution of the offensive line is noticeably better.
Excellent job guys. Top notch work.
Love the video clip addition.

Absolutely excellent...
Considering a power outage kept me from DVR’ing the game, this is the next best thing… Love the analysis, commentary, and the video addition is wonderful.
THANK YOU!!
Starting to see glimpses of some truly elite play on both sides…Just need consistency, and please LORD help with fair officiating.
I don’t think it has been discussed too much in detail yet, but why are we not seeing more K. Williams at safety? Someone mentioned he hasn’t learned all the schemes but at some point shouldn’t we put him out there at least in garbage time? I always thought you play your best player available.
It's been discussed a copious amount. But..
I think Terrence Brooks is very, very, close to him athletically. And way ahead of him scheme wise. I like Brooks and wouldn’t mind seeing him on the field more. Karlos has a long way to go IMO.

I’ve heard he is not close

So where does that leave him then?
Taking over at CB/Nickel when Harris leaves and Slide Williams in at Saftey in 2012?

Nevermind. I just listened to the Podcast with Ingram Smith.
We’re on the same page about Brooks and Williams.
