D-D Yard Play Formation Analysis
HOPKINS,D. kickoff 55 yards to the ST15, Haynes, D. return 19 yards to the ST34 (SMITH,T.).   Not going to give T.J. Graham a shot

1-10 St34 Washington, J. rush over left guard for 4 yards to the ST38 (WILLIAMS,V.), clock 14:46.   Power play, Anthony McCloud and Brandon Jenkins both squeeze well. Vince Williams is aggressive but doesn't play correct shoulder.
2-6 St38 Glennon, M. sideline pass incomplete to Payton, Q. (DAWKINS,E.), clock 14:24.   Everett Dawkins with the great effort to bat the ball down. Fire zone.
3-6 St38 Glennon, M. middle pass incomplete to Washington, J. (BROOKS,T.), clock 14:19.   Great coverage in the secondary, particularly by Greg Reid. Terrence Brooks closes quickly on the checkdown.
Drive: 3 plays, 4 yards, TOP 00:54   Great team defense and unselfish play.

4-6 St38 Baumann, W. punt 44 yards to the FS18, downed.   Excellent punt, not much to do about it.

1-10 Fs18 FREEMAN,D. rush up middle for 7 yards to the FS25 (Wolff, E.), clock 13:52. 22 I Inside zone to the field. Devonta Freeman good cut and hard running. Nice blocks by the center and guards.
2-3 Fs25 PRYOR,L. rush left for 5 yards to the FS30, 1ST DOWN FS, out-of-bounds (Manning, T.), clock 13:27. 12 gun twins field Draw to Lonnie Pryor. Excellent double team by Zebrie Sanders and Beau Reliford.
1-10 Fs30 MANUEL,E crossing pass complete to SMITH,R. for 9 yards to the FS39 (Amerson, D.), clock 12:58. 21 gun EJ works the frontside progression off three-step and hits the curl.
2-1 Fs39 PRYOR,L. rush over right guard for no gain to the FS39 (Cole, A.), clock 12:23. 21 I twins field Give to Lonnie. He missed the hole. Had it blocked to the boundary in the C gap.
3-1 Fs39 FREEMAN,D. rush over left guard for no gain to the FS39 (Kuhn, M.;Slay, B.), clock 11:55 22 I Inside zone is stuffed by an excellent play from Markus Kuhn. FSU did not come off the ball well here.
Drive: 5 plays, 21 yards, TOP 02:43   Pretty poor opening drive.

4-1 Fs39 POWELL,S. punt 42 yards to the ST19, fair cch by Graham, T..   Rather be at the 19 than in the end zone. And no opportunity for return. Well done.

1-10 St19 Washington, J. rush over right tackle for 4 yards to the ST23 (JERNIGAN,T.;CARRADINE,C.), clock 11:05.   Cameron Erving gets blocked and Nigel Bradham is slow to react.
2-6 St23 Glennon, M. sacked for loss of 8 yards to the ST15 (CARRADINE,C.), clock 10:38.   Tremendous play by Cornellius Carradine. Destroys the offensive tackle.
3-14 St15 Glennon, M. sideline pass complete to Smith, J. for 9 yards to the ST24, out-of-bounds (REID,G.), clock 09:51.   Excellent situational football by Greg Reid. Allowing the 9-yard catch is fine on 3rd-14. Greg got him OOB. Pressure by Brandon Jenkins forced him out of the pocket and into the dump off.
Drive: 3 plays, 5 yards, TOP 01:53   Hard to play much better defense than this.

4-5 St24 Baumann, W. punt 43 yards to the FS33, REID,G. return 28 yards to the ST39, out-of-bounds (Thompson, S.).   Nice return by Greg and poor tackling and coverage by N.C. State. This was more bad NCSU than it was good FSU

1-10 St39 MANUEL,E sideline pass complete to GREEN,C. for 32 yards to the ST7, 1ST DOWN FS (McGill, T.), clock 09:15. 11 gun Quick out to Christian Green, NCSU defender underestimates his speed, and Green shows off his talent. Ball to playmakers in space.
1-G St07 FREEMAN,D. rush option left for 7 yards to the ST0, TOUCHDOWN, clock 08:46. 11 pistol Speed option to the field. Sanders gets just enough of the backer to create the edge, gets away with a hold, EJ holds the ball very well, draws defenders, and pitches to Devonta Freeman who is in perfect position.
    HOPKINS,D. kick tempt good.
Florida Ste 7, NC Ste 0
Drive: 2 plays, 39 yards, TOP 00:48   Excellent drive using the players' skills.

HOPKINS,D. kickoff 70 yards to the ST0, Graham, T. return 22 yards to the ST22 (ABRAM,C.;STEVENS,T.).   Toshmon Stevens and Chad Abram get off blocks quite well.

1-10 St22 Washington, J. rush over left guard for 3 yards to the ST25 (BRADHAM,N.), clock 08:28.   Dawkins loses his footing here and gets driven to the ground. And 3 yards is all NCSU can get.
2-7 St25 Creecy, T. rush over left tackle for 4 yards to the ST29 (JOYNER,L.), clock 07:52.   NCSU catches FSU in a blitz. FSU is misaligned and Vince Williams needs to be a gap closer to the strong side.
3-3 St29 Glennon, M. sideline pass complete to Palmer, T. for 4 yards to the ST33, 1ST DOWN ST (HARRIS,M.), clock 07:19.   Quick out, good throw in rhythm. Pretty tough to stop.
1-10 St33 Creecy, T. rush up middle for 2 yards to the ST35 (WERNER,B.;WILLIAMS,V.), clock 06:38.   Anthony McCloud does an excellent job handling the double v. inside zone. Vince Williams nice cleanup. Bjoern Werner too.
2-8 St35 Glennon, M. deep pass incomplete to Howard, S., clock 06:08.   Very tight coverage by Mike Harris along the sideline v. the back shoulder throw. Not a great throw.
3-8 St35 Glennon, M. crossing pass incomplete to Smith, J., clock 06:04. Injured player for FSU is #31-Brooks.   FSU comes on the blitz w/ Christian Jones. NCSU throw into ok but not great coverage. Dropped. Glennon moves well in the pocket.
Drive: 6 plays, 13 yards, TOP 02:45   Not as good of a defensive series, but you won't catch me complaining about it.

4-8 St35 Baumann, W. punt 35 yards to the FS30, fair cch by REID,G..   Scared of Greg Reid.

1-10 Fs30 MANUEL,E screen pass complete to THOMAS,J. for 6 yards to the FS36 (Green, D.), clock 05:36. 11 gun Swing screen to Jermaine Thomas. Decent block by Jarred Haggins. EJ needs to get this ball out quicker.
2-4 Fs36 MANUEL,E screen pass incomplete to FREEMAN,D., dropped pass, clock 05:12. 20 gun pony play action screen. Played very well by NCSU and even if Freeman doesn't drop it, it's not going anywhere.
3-4 Fs36 MANUEL,E sideline pass complete to SHAW,K. for 4 yards to the FS40, 1ST DOWN FS, out-of-bounds, clock 05:07. 10 gun Quick out to Kenny Shaw, thrown in rhythm, excellent route by Shaw to the sticks.
1-10 Fs40 THOMAS,J. rush option right for 3 yards to the FS43, out-of-bounds (Cole, A.), clock 04:42. 21 I Option, FSU doesn't get this blocked well because of the NCSU blitz.
2-7 Fs43 PENALTY FS false start (J,FAHRENKRUG) 5 yards to the FS38, clock 04:12.   Ref says this was on Stork.
2-12 Fs38 MANUEL,E crossing pass complete to THOMAS,J. for 13 yards to the ST49, 1ST DOWN FS (Wolff, E.), clock 04:00. 21 gun Angle route to Jermaine Thomas. Well blocked, well ran, well thrown. Finding ways to get the ball to the middle of the field.
1-10 St49 MANUEL,E deep in pass complete to O'LEARY,N. for 25 yards to the ST24, 1ST DOWN FS (Wilson, C.), clock 03:30. 21 gun Play action, E.J. Manuel hits Nick O'Leary on the deep in cut.
1-10 St24 MANUEL,E rush right for loss of 2 yards to the ST26 (Norman, A.), clock 02:44. 10 gun trips field Called QB draw. Manuel needs to stay outside. FSU blocked it to the outside. Mental error on EJ.
2-12 St26 THOMAS,J. rush right for 1 yard to the ST25 (Norman, A.), clock 02:16. 10 gun Stretch to the boundary w/ end around motion. Bobby Hart does not seal the linebacker.
3-11 St25 MANUEL,E middle pass incomplete to GREEN,C., clock 01:42. 11 gun Protection is good, EJ rushes a throw to Christian Green. Nick O'Leary ran the wrong route and Fisher was angry. Would have been open if he ran the correct route.
4-11 St25 HOPKINS,D. field goal tempt from 43 GOOD, clock 01:37.
Florida Ste 10, NC Ste 0
Drive: 10 plays, 45 yards, TOP 04:20   Several mental errors on the drive. Not going to get it done.

HOPKINS,D. kickoff 70 yards to the ST0, touchback.   Crushed this one.

1-10 St20 Glennon, M. rush quarterback scramble for 3 yards to the ST23 (MCALLISTER,D.), clock 01:19.   Guys getting out of their gaps trying for the sack. That's somewhat OK with an immobile QB back there.
2-7 St23 Creecy, T. rush over left guard for 8 yards to the ST31, 1ST DOWN ST (BRADHAM,N.;SMITH,T.), clock 00:52.   FSU is not lined up correctly, IMO. Just doesn't make sense. NG and DT need to be shifted at least a half gap to the strong side. Blocks for NCSU were too easy.
1-10 St31 Glennon, M. middle pass complete to Bryan, G. for 4 yards to the ST35 (JONES,C.;SMITH,T.).   Good throw into tight coverage. Can't cover everything.

    2nd quarter
2-6 St35 Creecy, T. rush left for no gain to the ST35 (MCCLOUD,A.), clock 14:43.   Great job of penetration by Brandon Jenkins and Anthony McCloud.
3-6 St35 Glennon, M. sideline pass complete to Bryan, G. for 7 yards to the ST42, 1ST DOWN ST, out-of-bounds (MOODY,N.), clock 14:11.   FSU brings the blitz, Brandon Jenkins undisciplined and goes for the wrong shoulder. Needs to go for the other shoulder to keep him in the pocket.
1-10 St42 Washington, J. rush over left guard for 2 yards to the ST44 (DAWKINS,E.;WERNER,B.), clock 13:38.   Nice run defense by Werner. Controlling the blocker.
2-8 St44 Glennon, M. wide receiver screen pass complete to Graham, T. for 17 yards to the FS39, 1ST DOWN ST (HARRIS,M.;WERNER,B.), clock 13:02.   Bubble screen, nice block on Mike Harris. Best play of the day for NCSU.
1-10 Fs39 Washington, J. rush right for 7 yards to the FS32 (RHODES,X.), clock 12:19.   I don't think FSU is lined up correctly here. Seems they are out-gapped from the start. Very strange.
2-3 Fs32 Glennon, M. sideline pass complete to Underwood, B. for 3 yards to the FS29, 1ST DOWN ST (REID,G.), clock 11:44.   Good tackle by Greg Reid. Very tough to stop. Sticks moving video!!!! What the heck are they doing? Cheating?
1-10 Fs29 Timeout NC Ste, clock 11:22.
1-10 Fs29 Washington, J. rush left for 1 yard to the FS28 (BRADHAM,N.;HICKS,D.), clock 11:06.   Good leverage on the outside run by Dan Hicks.
2-9 Fs28 Glennon, M. deep pass incomplete. Official Review: Call on field is an interception. Official Review: Call is overturned. Incomplete pass.   Excellent pressure off the backside by Jenkins and Joyner almost has an interception inbounds. Think Glennon tried to throw this away maybe? Weird play by Glennon.
3-9 Fs28 PENALTY ST false start (Mtes, R.) 5 yards to the FS33, clock 10:41.
3-14 Fs33 Glennon, M. crossing pass incomplete to Creecy, T. (BROOKS,T.), clock 10:37.   Tremendous coverage all around on this play. Literally every man was blanketed. Terrence Brooks excellent job to change direction on the angle route.
4-14 Fs33 Sade, N. field goal tempt from 51 MISSED - short, spot FS34, clock 10:32.
Drive: 13 plays, 47 yards, TOP 06:05   By not allowing the big play, FSU made NCSU try to repeatedly execute. Not many teams can do that against a defense of this quality.

1-10 Fs34 MANUEL,E sideline pass complete to REED,B. for 8 yards to the FS42, out-of-bounds (Wilson, C.), clock 10:23. 00 gun Don't like EJ's awareness here re: the blitz. Don't like the blitz pickup by the left side (LT needs to fan out and LG needs to take the end). Great job by Bert Reed to make people miss.
2-2 Fs42 MANUEL,E bubble screen pass complete to SMITH,R. for 9 yards to the ST49, 1ST DOWN FS (Amerson, D.), clock 10:00. 21 gun twins Bubble to the field, well thrown by EJ. Bert Reed decent block. Excellent awareness to pic up an uncontested 9 yards.
1-10 St49 MANUEL,E sacked for loss of 4 yards to the FS47 (Sweezy, J.), clock 09:18. 21 gun twins 1. EJ should have checked to the run here, I think. 2. Poor job by Garrett Faircloth, doesn't handle the twist.
2-14 Fs47 MANUEL,E deep out pass complete to REED,B. for 18 yards to the ST35, 1ST DOWN FS, out-of-bounds (Johnson, D.), clock 08:48. 10 gun tight twins field Smash combo, good route, excellent throw and anticipation by EJ. Better job handling the twist this time.
1-10 St35 MANUEL,E wide receiver screen pass complete to REED,B. for 14 yards to the ST21, 1ST DOWN FS (Bishop, B.;Slay, B.), clock 08:24. 10 gun Quick bubble to the boundary. Throw for 4, Bert got the extra 10 with his legs. Easy yards v. favorable alignment. All mental. And good throw.
1-10 St21 MANUEL,E sacked for loss of 2 yards to the ST23 (Manning, T.), clock 07:48. 10 gun Line protects to the right, so the free rusher is on EJ. He spins out of it, doesn't find anybody, but then doesn't throw it away. Dumb to take a two-yard loss here.
2-12 St23 THOMAS,J. rush option right for 15 yards to the ST8, 1ST DOWN FS (Cole, A.), clock 07:23. 11 pistol Speed option to the field. Hart and Faircloth control the man, but neither climbs. O'Leary decent job to ride the rusher out. This is all Manuel, as he rides the hole, then sees Thomas is still in position (good job) for the pitch.
1-G St08 PRYOR,L. rush over left tackle for 8 yards to the ST0, TOUCHDOWN, clock 06:57. 21 gun twins field Stretch to Lonnie Pryor to the field. Zebrie and Fahrenkrug don't get off the double, but Stork has an excellent block. Rodney Smith high, high effort block to get the backer. Lonnie Pryor with some very tough running and N.C. State with some piss poor tackling. Good effort by Lonnie.
    HOPKINS,D. kick tempt good.
Florida Ste 17, NC Ste 0
Drive: 8 plays, 66 yards, TOP 03:40   FSU scored, but this drive was far from perfect.

HOPKINS,D. kickoff 53 yards to the ST17, Haynes, D. return 12 yards to the ST29 (HARRIS,M.), PENALTY ST illegal block 10 yards to the ST19, 1st and 10, ST ball on ST19.   Just trying to keep it away from Harris?

1-10 St19 Washington, J. rush up middle for 5 yards to the ST24 (STEVENS,T.;BRADHAM,N.), clock 06:38.   Either Nigel Bradham or Tim Jernigan get out of their gap against this inside zone run.
2-5 St24 Washington, J. rush up middle for loss of 2 yards to the ST22 (JERNIGAN,T.), clock 06:01.   The burst Timmy Jernigan gets here off the ball is just insane. Warren Sapp?
3-7 St22 Glennon, M. sacked for loss of 3 yards to the ST19 (HARRIS,M.), clock 05:17.   Zone blitz, rush 5 cover with 6, bringing the nickelback from the field, makes Glennon pump the ball and gives the DB time to make the sack. Excellent play design and unselfish plays by Bjoern Werner and Nigel Bradham to occupy blockers and not try for the sack. They occupied the blocks while Harris came in unblocked.
    Drive: 3 plays, 0 yards, TOP 02:02

4-10 St19 Baumann, W. punt 24 yards to the ST43, downed. Ball was ruled to have hit an NC Ste player the 50, bounced back.   This punt hits FSU, but the refs said it was recovered by FSU. The NCSU player comes out of the pile with the ball. ACC Officiating, everybody! I guess they say it hit an NCSU player or that the FSU player was pushed into the ball?

1-10 St43 FREEMAN,D. rush up middle for loss of 2 yards to the ST45 (Cole, A.), PENALTY FS holding (HART,B.) 11 yards to the FS46, NO PLAY. 10 pistol I don't see the holding on Hart, but the angle is tough. Play is stretch to the boundary and Hart is cut blocking. He may have grabbed the guy by the ankles.
1-21 Fs46 MANUEL,E pass incomplete (Kuhn, M.). 21 gun Angle route, same play ran to Jermaine earlier. Manuel tries to hit Freeman and the NCSU dlineman gets his hands up.
2-21 Fs46 MANUEL,E deep in pass incomplete to SHAW,K., clock 04:18. 10 gun tight Kenny Shaw is wide open on the deep cross and EJ makes a terrible throw. Wind was likely a factor here. Good scramble, poor throw.
3-21 Fs46 MANUEL,E sacked for loss of 1 yard to the FS45 (Kuhn, M.), clock 04:12. 10 gun tight Faircloth with a total whiff on the blitzing backer from the 3-4 alignment. EJ scrambles to the sideline and takes an unnecessary hit. Dumb.
Drive: 3 plays, minus 12 yards, TOP 01:06   Not the best of drives. NCSU did play better, however, and it wasn't all FSU mental errors.

4-22 Fs45 POWELL,S. punt 49 yards to the ST6, downed.   Not a great punt. NCSU should have caught the punt and not let it bounce.

1-10 St06 Glennon, M. middle pass complete to Purvis, T. for 3 yards to the ST9 (MOODY,N.), clock 03:24.   Very short crossing route to the backup tight end.
2-7 St09 Glennon, M. middle pass incomplete to Washington, J., QB hurry by WERNER,B., clock 03:02.   Tremendous rush by Jenkins and Werner, Glennon flips it wildly to the back.
3-7 St09 Glennon, M. crossing pass complete to Palmer, T. for 9 yards to the ST18, 1ST DOWN ST (HARRIS,M.), clock 02:55.   FSU in cover-2 and NCSU hits a crosser to the speedy slot guy. Very nice play by Glennon.
1-10 St18 Washington, J. rush up middle for 1 yard to the ST19 (MCCLOUD,A.;JONES,C.), clock 02:41.   Draw, good block shedding by Dawkins.
2-9 St19 Timeout Florida Ste, clock 02:41.   Jimbo being aggressive. Good job, coach.
2-9 St19 Glennon, M. sideline pass incomplete to Smith, J. (HARRIS,M.), clock 02:37.   Glennon rifles the 10-yard out to the boundary and Harris makes a great play to swat it.
3-9 St19 PENALTY ST false start (Washington, J.) 5 yards to the ST14, clock 02:37.   Surprisingly good crowd for FSU with parent's weekend.
3-14 St14 Glennon, M. crossing pass complete to Palmer, T. for 15 yards to the ST29, 1ST DOWN ST (HARRIS,M.), clock 02:30.   Either FSU is in Zone and Nick Moody messes up, or FSU is in man and Christian Jones gets picked. Can't really tell because I can't see the remaining coverage. I lean towards zone because I don’t think FSU would want Christian Jones manned up on a slot.
1-10 St29 Glennon, M. post pass intercepted by RHODES,X. the FS26, RHODES,X. return 0 yards to the FS26.   Really a bad decision by Glennon to throw at Xavier Rhodes and Lamarcus Joyner. Excellent job of those two to bracket the receiver step for step.
Drive: 7 plays, 23 yards, TOP 01:28   Really not bad defense here, NCSU just hit some stuff.

1-10 Fs26 MANUEL,E screen pass complete to THOMAS,J. for 6 yards to the FS32, out-of-bounds (Cole, A.), clock 02:05. 10 gun Swing screen to the field. Excellent block by Green
2-4 Fs32 MANUEL,E slant pass complete to SHAW,K. for 7 yards to the FS39, 1ST DOWN FS (Wolff, E.), clock 01:46. 10 gun Double slants, good job by the offensive line to cut, Manuel double clutches but puts it on Shaw.
1-10 Fs39 MANUEL,E sideline pass complete to SHAW,K. for 6 yards to the FS45, out-of-bounds, clock 01:39. 10 gun NCSU has 13 players on the field, not called. But EJ hits Shaw on the easy hitch.
2-4 Fs45 MANUEL,E sideline pass complete to SHAW,K. for 5 yards to the 50 yardline, 1ST DOWN FS, out-of-bounds, clock 01:35. 10 gun Same play, good job on blitz pickup. Accurate ball by EJ. Very nice.
1-10 Fs50 MANUEL,E flag pass incomplete to REED,B., clock 01:31. 10 gun EJ was late on the smash combo, think he realized he missed the window and threw it away.
2-10 Fs50 MANUEL,E screen pass complete to THOMAS,J. for 32 yards to the ST18, 1ST DOWN FS, out-of-bounds, clock 01:20. 10 gun Beautiful screen, well times, Thomas with the decent fake block, Zebrie Sanders excellent block, accurate ball, Thomas good vision, Rodney Smith huge block.
1-10 St18 MANUEL,E wide receiver screen pass complete to REED,B. for loss of 2 yards to the ST20 (Smith, R.), clock 01:09. Injured player for FSU is #83-Reed. 10 gun Bubble to the wrong side! Bert Reed gets crushed and gave EJ a piece of his mind for throwing it to the wrong side. No idea what EJ saw here.
2-12 St20 MANUEL,E post pass complete to SHAW,K. for 20 yards to the ST0, 1ST DOWN FS, TOUCHDOWN, clock 00:54. 10 gun Good protection, EJ excellent throw, Shaw tremendous route to drive the safety, and it would have been wide, wide open if Christian Green doesn't run the incorrect route to unnecessarily draw the defender close to Shaw.
    HOPKINS,D. kick tempt good.
Florida Ste 24, NC Ste 0
Drive: 8 plays, 74 yards, TOP 01:28   Excellent drive. Sharp mentally and took care of business.

HOPKINS,D. kickoff 60 yards to the ST10, Graham, T. return 13 yards to the ST23 (ABRAM,C.).   High kick, well done.

1-10 St23 Creecy, T. rush left for 2 yards to the ST25 (WILLIAMS,V.;HARRIS,M.), clock 00:32.   The entire defensive line is stout and Williams quickly fills.
2-8 St25 Washington, J. rush for 2 yards to the ST27 (HARRIS,M.).   Mike Harris reads this well.
3-6 St27 End of half, clock 00:00.
    Drive: 2 plays, 4 yards, TOP 00:48
Florida Ste 24, NC Ste 0

Second Half

2-16 St29MANUEL,E crossing pass intercepted by Manning, T. the ST20, Manning, T. return 3 yards to the ST23 (REED,B.) (Wolff, E.).11 gunManuel throws the in cut to Smith. Rodney needs to catch the football. Poor concentration on his part. Decent protection.
Drive: 10 plays, 31 yards, TOP 03:37 Obviously, not a great drive. But some nice plays.

1-10 St23Glennon, M. bubble screen pass complete to Graham, T. for 1 yard to the ST24 (JOYNER,L.), clock 10:58. Tremendous play on the bubble by Lamarcus.

IMO, it should have been the 1st down. The spot was a yard behind where the WR had two hands on the ball. Some ref went rogue and fixed it.

No, rewatch the replay...

The receiver doesn’t catch it clean and bobbles it. When he’s tackled with possession he’s short of the marker. Terrible ACC officiating, how are these guys employed?

You also said "In my opinion" so that had an effect that yours varies from mine.

In my opinion, I feel that he was short of the marker when he finally had possession; after he bobbled it, hit his helmet and then brought it in with two hands as he was corralled by the DB.

It was probably being held wrong at the yard line and they adjusted. The tight camera angle does not tell the whole story.

My favorite part, the NC St drive close to the end of the half when Glennon got picked by XR

Drive: 7 plays, 23 yards, TOP 01:28 Really not bad defense here, NCSU just hit some stuff.

Moody looked better than Parks on most plays.

I see him and Brooks splitting more time. Williams looked better and the defense as a whole is improving, which is scarry good for the Noles.

EJ’s throws to the rb and bubbles are weak!!!!! He did it several times this game and it cost huge chunks of yardage. He also double clutches a bit too much still. He is looking better , don’t get me wrong but the throws were glaring problems and a big part of our O.

by pb4957 on Nov 1, 2011 10:53 PM EDT reply actions

Thought bubbles and dump offs to RBs were fine, don't want

to throw bullets to RBs, in fact 8 dropped one because EJ threw a rocket to him 8 yards away. There were a couple glaring throws that were just bad. The backwards pass where it either got away from him or the wind caught it, and there was another….I think behind JT and he got blown up in the backfield. Neither of those plays (bad, bad plays) were because he lacked arm strength. The bubble that did work so well were because he got them out quickly and in front of the WRs.

Working on the NC State Data,

FSU ran some absolutely crazy stuff. FSU has realized the value of the secondary players. FSU through the 3rd quarter has ran 3-2, 3-3, 4-3, 3-4, 4-2, 4-1. Crazy though that Bradham is on the field for every single down. Just to give a look in one of those formations, the 4-1 comprised of Werner, TJ, Erving, Jenkins, Bradham, Terrance Brooks, Rhodes, Harris, Reid, Parks, and Joyner. Crazy. Brooks was on the field in a lot of passing downs. He’s the real deal.

Knowing is half the battle, the other half is violence.

Only explanation I can come up with (besides simple seniority) is that he knows the defense/calls better than the rest or the coaches consider him their best tackler.

Here's a question I've had for a while

Lets see if I can articulate it well.

A couple plays after the “chain gang fiasco”, Bud writes in reference to our D,

By not allowing the big play, FSU made NCSU try to repeatedly execute. Not many teams can do that against a defense of this quality.
.
Stoops tends to use a bunch of zone, tries to keep everything in front of his D and relies on stopping the big play. You know, bend but don’t break and tighten up in the red zone. In other words, Stoop’s defense wants to force an offense to have to methodically march down the field through a level of execution and a high level of consistency. This is very hard, especially at the college level.

My question is, doesn’t Jimbo expect this from his own offense? Many categorize Jimbo’s offense as "dink and dunk". I agree. I see a lot of screens, underneath routes, throws to the backs, etc.. You know, control the clock and methodically march down the field taking what the defense gives you. This philosophy behind Fisher’s offensive system can be extremely effective. It can totally control a game. And when paired with a dominate defense, is devastating (see Jimbo’s LSU years). But it also requires, not only a level of execution, but also a high level of consistency. Sound familiar? Maybe this is why Jimbo’s offense sometimes bogs down (or at least appears to bog down)? Is Jimbo asking his own offense to do exactly what he knows is very difficult to expect? Is he asking too much from 18 to 22 year olds?

Curious what you guys think?

by jimmygnole on Nov 1, 2011 11:35 PM EDT reply actions   1 recs

*Is Jimbo asking his own offense to do exactly what he knows is very difficult to accomplish?

by jimmygnole on Nov 1, 2011 11:38 PM EDT up reply actions

I worry about this too. In defense of Jimbo, we do seem to be a bit more explosive this season than in prior years and I am happy with the offense. Still, I see a lot of supposedly simple spread offenses putting up insane numbers and wonder if we are being unnecessarily complex.

Will our pro style attack reap benefits with recruits who want to build a resume for the NFL? One would hope, but the spread doesn’t seem to have scared Sammy Watkins.

by 38Noles on Nov 2, 2011 3:12 AM EDT up reply actions

That's not really what I'm talking about

I see some of you on TN write that his system might be too difficult, others say it is too simple (thanks Tom Wort). It’s not about complexity to me. It’s the “dink and dunk” of his offense that I’m questioning. The always “taking what they give you” mentality. I think opposing defenses approach Jimbo by giving up the short stuff and he takes it. Which is great in theory but sometimes plays right into the hands of the defense, especially really good ones.

I’m just curious if this is why so many question Jimbo’s offense and why it gives the impression of being erratic or inconsistent, even though the numbers tell us differently? Is it a “bend you but don’t break you” offense?

by jimmygnole on Nov 2, 2011 7:22 AM EDT up reply actions

dink and dunk?

Take what the opponent gives you? Seems like the opponents are giving us some long plays then. On plays of 20+ yards, FSU is #21 against FSB competition with 39. Clemson is tops in the conference with 46. G Tech has 45, N Car has 43 and then FSU.
If Clemson is considered a “high flying” circus act and we only have 7 less “20+ yard plays” through 8 games does that make us “dink and dunk”?

by law74 on Nov 2, 2011 9:54 AM EDT up reply actions

Bunch of Techs came against crappy teams too.

Had a bunch against Kansas.

Knowing is half the battle, the other half is violence.

by onebarrelrum on Nov 2, 2011 11:15 AM EDT up reply actions

I'm looking at Jimbo's entire resume

I agree that we’ve made some big plays this year, but overall, yes my untrained eye looks at Jimbo’s offense this way. I even saw some LSU fans say he was too conservative.

Again, I could be wrong, that’s why I brought it up. I want to know what everyone thinks.

I think "dink and dunk" is a mischaracterization of Jimbo's offense.

A better label is “take what the defense gives you” type of offense.

by FSUjab on Nov 2, 2011 10:24 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t think he asks that. I think with Ponder, he had a really special player who could do that. And it was super effective, producing two of the best in the country in back-to-back years.

With EJ, we’ve seen FSU be very, very explosive and not at all methodical.

I’ve seen some of the install tapes they use to put in their offense. I do not think it is too much.

I also think Clemson’s offense is overrated

Said he had 5 receptions for 42 yards and a TD, haha.

Thanks for all the work you put into this.

It’s articles like these that really make this site unique. Without a doubt the best FSU site on the web. Your work is appreciated!

Rodney gets my game ball for some of the blocks

and not just the decleater on the Thomas screen pass. At the goal line and down field. Unselfish play.

Is Moody Playing well?

So glad I dont have to get angry at Parks every week now with Moody and Brooks playing more……………

And when I rewatched the game gotta give Brooks, Dawkins, and Jones credit they did alot out there….wanna see Vince do some more from the Mike position but still great defensive effort.

Never work Retail!!!!!!

I have to disagree with the critisim on punting up 24 points on 4-1 at mid field

the game is in hand – why take a risk and create momentum for the other team – punting the ball is an acceptable call

Swing Screens

EJ needs to take a little touch off these balls. The ball needs to lead the screener up field – in stride. Bud pointed out one in this film review that had too much loft on it and I noticed it too during live action. Its happened a handful of other times in the last handful of games. If he doesnt get those out faster, a fast OLB is going to yoink one of those and return it for 6.

Or, more likely, get the running back injured.

Anyone else love how Tank is coming along?

Started off slow, but has now recorded a sack in 4 of his last 5 games.

Ha,

Not worried about him jumping after this year, you know unless he finishes with 10 more sacks in the last few games.

Knowing is half the battle, the other half is violence.

That's my point. At the rate he's progressing he may jump into that conversation.

Don’t even want that to be an option.

Yeah seriously

If our backup DE makes the early jump to the pros, that’d be ridiculous.

Shot a Gator in Jean Shorts just to watch him die.

I think we'll put 3 in the first 1-3 rounds after next year.

Probably two 1st rounders.
