Noles News 11.17.11

Florida State's injured left tackle Andrew Datko had another shoulder surgery this week, and Jimbo Fisher thought it went well. There's a chance he might get a medical red-shirt and be back for next season. There are many factors in play here, including the viability of his rehab, his desire to come back, and FSU's want for him to come back.

On the bowl front, you should still bet on the Champs Sports Bowl in Orlando, but hedge with the Chick-Fil-A in Atlanta. If Clemson loses again, they are a lock for Atlanta. If they win out, however, then Virginia Tech is the likely choice. But VT fans traveled to Atlanta just two weeks ago for the Georgia Tech game, and there could be concern over their want to travel again.

The Champs is pretty much a lock to take Notre Dame, as no Big East team has the record to necessitate a selection. You know the folks on that bowl committee are happy. Notre Dame is a very good team, just as FSU is. Both have had a lot of bad luck. Personally, I think a win over a Georgia team (not as good as Notre Dame) or Auburn (nowhere close to as good as Notre Dame) would do more for the program. FSU would be favored in both games.

A note from yesterday's podcast: FSU is the best team with at least three losses. UVA is the worst BCS team with at least 7 wins.

I think Muschamp should also be telling is Oline to block, his quarterbacks to throw, his dline to get to the passer, his linebackers to tackle, and his secondary to cover. Rainey and Demps seem to be doing okay, that’s about it.

Decided schematic advantage

Telling receivers to “get open” must be part of the “decided schematic advantage” that Coach Weis is famous for.

Also, you might want to simplify your defense to “make plays.”

Love his work ethic, commitment and resolve but think it’s best for him and program to move. How many surgeries is that now on his shoulder? He should concentrate on life after football. FSU should move forward with mathias or younger guys.

I would love GA too

Not saying that I wouldnt want to take on a challenge (because ND will be a harder challenge) but if they (UGA) stay ranked relatively high and we beat them down (which we can do), then it looks great for us – ends the year with a better ranking, and starts the next year with an even higher ranking, when we are primed for a NC

by TLHWG on Nov 17, 2011 12:33 PM EST up reply actions

VT didn’t travel well to GT, and returned a large chunk of their allotment. Of course, it was a Thursday night game, but regardless the Chik-fil-a folks saw both the Clemson and VT games at GT. Clemson had huge tailgating turnout, packed the downtown hotels, and packed every seat at Bobby Dodd.

I’m sure VT will travel much better for the bowl than for a Thursday night game at GT, but if there is a choice between FSU and VT, I’d expect FSU.

Football is my favorite show.

by coonhound on Nov 17, 2011 9:50 AM EST reply actions

Clemson is much closer to Atlanta

Makes sense to me that they would travel to Ga Tech better. And they were ranked number 5 at the time, which is always good for fan morale, particularly when it’s been twenty years since the last time they won the conference.

I’m not suggesting that FSU doesn’t make more sense to the Fila Bowl than does Va Tech but it would have shocked me, given the above circumstances if Clemson didn’t travel better than Va Tech.

Where it really gets interesting though is, it’s not like Clemson people HAVE to get hotel rooms in Atlanta. Game is New Year’s Eve but for many of them, a two hour drive after the game won’t be the end of the world, I’d wager.

Finally, IF after starting the year 9 and zip and making noise about playing for the BCS title, IF Clemson gets beat in the ACC title game, I would wager that there will be many fans in orange that say “screw it, I’m not spending a pile of money a week after Christmas to go the Chick Fil-A Bowl. I need to save that money to buy some more players.”

Virginia Tech has done very well selling tickets to the Chick-fil-A Bowl in the past and the Chick-fil-A kickoff game against Alabama

Virginia Tech sold thousands more tickets for their trips to the Chick-fil-A Bowl than FSU did last year…

by Lpfsu511 on Nov 17, 2011 10:30 AM EST up reply actions

FSU technically did not sell our their allotment.

FSU sold around 10,500 of their 18,000 ticket allotment, but the Chick-fil-A Bowl allowed FSU to return unsold tickets with no penalty. Virginia Tech has sold 18,000+ tickets to the Chick-fil-A Bowl each time they have played there. For those that were at the game and not sitting in the lower level endzone (FSU’s allotment), it was clear that the upper deck behind the Marching Chiefs (where the high school bands and halftime entertainment was sitting) was not full of FSU fans like the South Carolina section was full of Gamecocks. FSU was probably 7,000+ tickets short of selling their allotment.

Clemson might not be a good fit for the Chick Fil-A bowl

Because the most likely SEC invite will be either USCe or Auburn (assuming UGA beats UK this weekend and plays in the championship game)… I am not sure they will want a rematch from the season in a bowl game.

by Elendil on Nov 17, 2011 10:36 AM EST reply actions

Interesting point. Had not considered that, but you are right.

If UGA closes the season well they’re not going to slide all the way down to the SEC’s #5 slot (?), they’ll be in the Outback I think, which is higher in the pecking order…. so it’s almost a foregone conclusion that it’s Auburn or USCe against the ACC rep. Don’t think a rematch of “meh” teams would be a marquee draw for TV.

Would love to bump Clemson out of their bowl a la us getting kicked out of the Gator. MIght even root for ND to spank them in the Champs.

by arrdub on Nov 17, 2011 11:00 AM EST up reply actions

Agreed

It would be fun to watch Clemson fall to the #3 ACC bowl. But I think it will probably happen if Clemson loses the championship game

LSU and Alabama to BCS
UGA to Capital One
Arkansas to Cotton Bowl
USCe or Auburn to Gator Bowl
Other will fall to the Chick Fil-A Bowl

The rest of the SEC teams suck so it is unlikely this won’t be the line up. Bowls don’t like season rematches so I wouldn’t be surprised if FSU is selected for this game. Especially if the opponent is Auburn.

A win in the bowl game is the MOST important thing for momentum going into next year and going into the recruiting season. We are pretty even with ND imo and it would be a dog fight.

God I pray we get either Auburn or Notre Dame.

Pounding Auburn would be great for recruiting and the story line from their Chickening Out of our game several years ago would great. Payback would be so awesome.

I think the only way we go to the Chicken Bowl is

We beat UVA and UF convincingly.. Then Either Clemson or VaTech loses their rivarly game then turn around and lose the championship game. The Chicken bowl would then have to pick from a 3 loss FSU team on a 7 game winning streaking beating their oppents by an avg of 20+ points or a Clemson or VaTech team also with 3 loss on a 2 game losing streak

3rd less likely option.

Clemson&VT win out to the ACCCG, VT wins a close game for theACCCG Clemson doesn’t fall to many spots and goes to a BCS game.

Need Datko back if we want to win the ACC next year

Hate to say i but with the O line that we have I doubt we can win the ACC. Hart and Matias on the outside really worries me. Not 3 years from now but next year they will be liabilities. HAVE TO KEEP DATKO IF POSSIBLE!!!!!!!! Assuming he can play like he normally does.

I'm looking at the 2008 to 2009 precedent for some assurance that we'll be better next year.

Had a bunch of rookies thrown into action that season, too, and we were pretty good the next year. Probably working with better raw talent than we had then, to boot.

Could be but I also think it takes a good Oline to win.

Don’t think we are there and I’m not sure if the current group will get there. We need to recruit better interior lineman. We haven’t done so in years. The JUCO guy Farkenkrug has been a dissappointment to me. He has the size but lacks the strength to move players, Barron and Stork are small and can’t move a deer. I don’t even know who are RG is.

we had 7 plays that were 3 yards or less to conver of those we converted 4 of 7. We ran running play on 4 of the 7. 2 of those we coverted the others we didn’t.

Tomahawk Nation Nole-Holds-Barred Analysis of FSU Sports!

by Bud Elliott on Nov 17, 2011 1:38 PM EST up reply actions

Because this exchange has been painful to read....
Miami’s defensive line is decent, but not special. They’re missing Marcus Forston in the worst way. Now, DT Darius Smith has come on (listed at 335, probably 350). That’s a tough matchup for true freshman center Austin Barron, one of the many replacements on FSU’s offensive line.

Did you know: FSU has lost 3 offensive line starters since Spring, and 5 of its top 9? It’s true.

Anyway, FSU will be paying special attention to Olivier Vernon, as Miami will line him up over 17-year old tackle Bobby Hart. On the plus side, Zebrie Sanders should be able to handle Anthony Chickillo.

by TuckNole on Nov 17, 2011 1:43 PM EST up reply actions

So they are a decent DLine

based on wat you say.

With that general understanding that they are a decent Dline.

Shouldn’t we convert on 3rd shorts and not run to the tackles?

I’m trying to state that our interior Oline sucks. Are you saying our Interior Oline isn’t as bad as I make them seem?

by aznole85 on Nov 17, 2011 1:50 PM EST up reply actions

Nobody's arguing that isn't a problem.

What we are saying is 1) it’s not all on the OL. 2) Even with that problem we are still the best team in the ACC. There are other situations in a football game. We are currently 5th in the ACC in 3rd down conversion rate. Not exactly terrible.

Follow me @DKNoisewaterTN or @ACCrefsSuck.

by Dr.KennethNoisewater on Nov 17, 2011 1:17 PM EST up reply actions

Yup. But the best teams make up for it in other ways

like by having the #1 ypp offense. This includes all downs, not just 3rd—-which account for the smallest percentage of plays.

Follow me @DKNoisewaterTN or @ACCrefsSuck.

by Dr.KennethNoisewater on Nov 17, 2011 1:22 PM EST up reply actions

I agree with you that we have a very explosive offense

We get our yards but we also get into these 3 and short situations and we can’t convert as well as the best team in the conference should. That is my point in all of this. Me personally and obviously this boils down to how you feel about football, I feel that we need to be able to convert those 3rd and shorts to beat Elite competition. They extend drives and are the difference between 3 and 7 points.

by aznole85 on Nov 17, 2011 1:26 PM EST up reply actions

Nobody here is denying the fact that we've struggled in the short yardage run game.

With your comments, however, you’re making it seem like we have a system issue and not just a temporary problem.

I think past data show that it’s not a system problem, and it’s very likely we’ll see improvement next year.

Trickett has not been very impressive save for last year and we even got dominated at times last year against upper echelon competition. I don’t buy in to his less weight is better approach at the college level. Is that our OL has been very good the two years, but that Trickett isn’t above criticism and that our OL should by all means have been better than it is this year, injuries or not.

I see Tricket as a good OL coach, and was elite at one time, but we should all wonder where he is in his life cycle of coaching. Everyone has a prime and he is what, 65 or something? How much longer is he going to enjoy screaming at 18 year olds. Last year was great for him because he had a ton of experienced players. While I imagine his is definitely on the downward slope of his peak coaching curve, he may have a few years of high level coaching left and in that case, I’m still supportive of him given what he brings to the table.

Now some people will say well if we were healthy. But someone can say well maybe Manuel would have been healthy had we have had a running game that would prevent Manuel from running it so much.

I"m sorry but we can’t convert a 3rd and 1. We can do everythign else on offense but the easiest thing and that is to convert a 1 yard run.

If we had Rodgers as a QB than yes we could get away without having a run game but we aren’t that good on offense. We could possibly win the ACC with our current Oline but I don’t see how we could win a NC without a good run blocking Oline.

A TE is the reason we don’t convert because obviously the coachs see what I see.

A week interior offensive line so they try to bounce outside on 3/4 and short.

If we had a good interior O line we would never be trying to run to the outside that Little even becomes an issue.

Are you suggesting?

Are you suggesting that in 3/4 and short, that offenses should run inside every time? Sounds like it.

My recall is, Miami had to throw a jump ball to their tight end on 3 and and goal from the 1 because the first two times they tried to run inside they zip.

I would love to be able to run inside in short yardage. But I don’t believe in beating my head against a wall, either.

Little has been costing this team for a while. He won’t hurt us next year, of that, I’m fairly certain.

I’m not completely enamoured with our OL play either but you make it sound like a team should be able to convert every single third and short with an inside run and it doens’t work that way, especially around the goal line.

Against good people, you have to have balance. In all situations, at all times.

We would have 2 more wins this year with the line we currently have and EJ starting.

2012 is suppose to be a definite ACC championship year and possible title run. I’m not willing to bet the farm on Datko’s shoulders again. If he went down mid-season again, it could be devastating. I think we should just get the young guys ready. Of course if Datko’s shoulders were deemed completely reliable and he came out of the surgery with flying colors then of course we need him.

I don't think we need Datko.

Though having him would be a welcome addition. We need for our OL to be healthy in the offseason and be able to work together before August.

Idk...

Matiaus is a question mark, the interior of the line is a giant question mark and hasn’t done muc this year to impress me at all. We can not impose our will to move the interior of a defensive line if we wanted to. The only team we were able to do that to was DUKE. Not impressive. Finally you have Hart, and he has played very well at at times this year. But I don’t think he is ready to dominate DE yet.

That being said if you feel that it takes a good O line to win and you think our O line is that type than we just disagree. I don’t think this O line is ready to move opponents anytime soon. If we want to win the ACC we are going to have to beat a very stout offense in Clemson, which means we will need to put up points. I just feel that our Offensive line and running game will suffer til we get some good interior blockers and we don’t have that.

Granted Datko is a LT not interior guy, but he will help that run game if he is healthy and can play.

Those are all question marks because of inexperience...

which is something these very talented kids are getting a lot of right now.

Curious as to why you're singling out Matias?

Have you seen (or not seen) something in him that specifically worries you, or is it just that he’s young and inexperienced?

Honestly

I’m worried bout the interior of the line but just feel that a veteran like Datko could help a young group. But I feel more comfortable with leaving Datko on an island to block then Matias.

Agree again if he is healthy....

the verdict is still out on Matias until we see him play.

I'm very interested in his size

A little worried though that Hart started over him. Guess that has a lot to do with Hart getting good experience at STA.

I am fairly confident

the interior will be the strong point of the 2012 OL, even if Datko comes back.

by YourWifeMyKids on Nov 17, 2011 5:50 PM EST up reply actions

Agree with the good dr.

Our o-line has not maximized its potential yet because of injuries and inexperience. We have a 17 year old at right tackle, a converted tackle at right guard, Stork and Fahrenkrug have gotten much better but still have room to improve, and Zebrie will be drafted high because of his versatility. Our o-line will be fine in 2012, and even better if Datko comes back for another go-around.

FSU will be favored by slightly more than a field goal. Not sure why people are assuming the outcome of that game. FSU is not getting the brantley-less Gators

Could be higher.

Just looking at F/+ ratings, you’d think that FSU would be favored by 10+ on a neutral field. Might be as much as a TD in the Swamp.

by Bud Elliott on Nov 17, 2011 1:29 PM EST up reply actions

Bud, can you elaborate a bit more on EJ's injury situation?

Granted, I believe it after seeing the play calling for the Miami game, but the UF game is less than two weeks away and to date there have been no major media outlets (that I’ve seen) reporting on it to corroborate that claim. Hell, I would at least expect a speculation-style article to have been written since then. It’s not like you’re the only person who talks to people associated with the team.

I would also add that earlier this year speculation on the severity of EJ’s injury and the length of time he would be out turned out to be less than 100% correct (meaning he came back earlier than we thought he would).

by AmplifiedJ on Nov 17, 2011 1:51 PM EST up reply actions

Meaning

You say “when,” but I think it’s more a matter of “if,” assuming EJ is as injured as we say he is (which we have no real way of knowing short of looking at his medical records).

by AmplifiedJ on Nov 17, 2011 1:57 PM EST up reply actions

You are correct.

by TuckNole on Nov 17, 2011 1:16 PM EST up reply actions

I know it's going to be competitive...

for atleast the 1st half ; but even if they had Brantley; who is he going to throw the ball too…. Jenkins, Werner, and who ever else name you want to throw in, is going to be in the backfield before he gets to his 1st read. Plus their receivers suck. Our O-line scares me though… I doubt we will be able to do much against their D-line in the run game. We need to go spread offense against Florida and utilize quick screens, and short passes to make-up for any lack of run game we may have. If we do that we should win easily. Our defense and special teams is going to keep us in good field position and them in bad field position…
