With Kansas Head Coach Turner Gill firing just moments ago will Kansas Athletic Director Sheahon Zenger interview Stoops for the Head Coaching job and take it?

Why Stoops will be interviewed?
History. Kansas Athletic Director Sheahon Zenger has known the Stoops family since 1991 when he worked with Bob Stoops at the Kansas State staff. Zenger also coached with Mark Stoops at USF in 1996 when Mark was a defensive back coach. Zenger and Stoops connected again at Wyoming from 1997-1999. This to go along with producing a top 10 defense will get Mark Stoops an interview for the Kansas job.

Will Stoops take it? Big if here, but they say money conquers all and Kansas has it.With Kansas recent buyout of Turner Gill for 6 million, Kansas is willing to put up the big money for a head coach. For those who say it's Kansas why would you go there? Mark Mangino proved back in 2007 Kansas can make a BCS Bowl Game.

What do you think? Will money be enough? Will Stoops wait for a better School? Will issues coaching against Bob lead him to turn it down? Will Stoops pull a Gene Chizik(took Iowa State job after Nat Championship)? Will being comfortable with your AD win out?

If he takes it who do you think will replace him???

Give me Kirby Smart…lol, although I know that will never happen

I thought Hudson was being groomed for the job?

That’s a big part of why Stoops eventually moving on to take a HC job hasn’t worried me so much; Florida State hired him knowing they’d only have him for a few years.

Smart will get a head coaching job of his own this year

moving laterally would really set back his goal of being a head coach.

Hudson seems like the obvious choice when Stoops leaves. Already has experience as a DC, and would represent the most seamless transition. Then question turns to who would coach DBs (promote Buckley?).

Kansas seems like it would be a pretty shaky job for Stoops to take. Total rebuild with limited ceiling. If he doesn’t get a plum job this season, I can think of at least seven programs that may have openings in a year depending on how things go in 2012 that are significantly better jobs than Kansas (Clemson, NC State, Maryland, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Washington, Tennessee). If FSU’s defense performs up to expectation next year, Stoops will be a pretty hot candidate (and there will always be mediocre-to-poor jobs like Kansas available if he gets impatient).

by whodoes on Nov 27, 2011 7:53 PM EST up reply actions

But when discussing that with Hudson

Wasn’t the drawback with him recruiting?

Stoops at Tennessee or TAMU could be dangerous.

Time to up my booster contributions and do my part to help keeps stoops at FSU.

Nobody wants the Tennessee job

Everybody knows the fans are insane there and will turn on you in 2 years of anything other than making the SEC championship. They really dont live in reality. Its a hard place to succeed. Practically every player has to come from out of state and he will never recruit with the likes of Bama, LSU or UF consistently. TAMU would make more sense.

Not to mention

he would have close to zero % chance to turn things around in TN if he were to start in 2013 as they will likely lose Hunter, Rogers, Rivera, and Bray. They will go through a big down year in 2013 which UT fans wont except. There is a reason Dooley was the only coach they could come up with.

I don’t really know what Hudson is as a recruiter, but I assume that even if he’s not a great recruiter he’s probably more than adequate (by the way, is Stoops a lights-out recruiter?).

As an aside, I perhaps could have added Nebraska to the list of potential openings after 2012 (yes, people are starting to grumble about Pelini), but there’s zero, zero chance that in the small likelihood Nebraska has an opening that they would hire Stoops (given that he would have the exact same profile as the previous coach).

by whodoes on Nov 27, 2011 10:20 PM EST up reply actions

I would throw

UCLA into that mix as well.

by kanole on Nov 28, 2011 6:41 AM EST up reply actions

UCLA will be open in a few hours; won’t have to wait until after 2012 for that one. Bruins fans are in open revolt.

by whodoes on Nov 28, 2011 1:31 PM EST up reply actions

I would think

FSU will go for a more seasoned DB coach than Buckley. Someone schooled in the zone schemes FSU currently runs. No doubt Buckley can coach them as DBs, but the secondary coach after Stoops will likely be as much as the pass coverage coordinator as position coach, my guess.

If not for the past problems with Mangino attached to the player abuse scandal

Mike Leech would be a perfect fit for them. IMO teams like Kansas who are in player barren states and have no history of getting elite out of state talent need to go gimmick offense to be marginally competitive.

If I was any high profile cordinator I wouldn’t take that job, seems to be a career killer. It’s seems like the type of job retreads and position coaches at high profile colleges should look at.

by nappygoat on Nov 27, 2011 6:23 PM EST reply actions

I disagree

I think they need a defensive coah like Mangino who took them to a BCS Bowl. Kansas won by being a top 15 defense not being a gimmicky offense. I always say go back to what worked before.

Kansas has shown they will pony up the money to get a top coach. Turner Gill was a very hot name before he went there and would’ve been offered other BCS coaching jobs(I actually believe he was)

I meant that his teams won by defense(KU was a top 15 rated defense when they went to Orange Bowl)

Aware that he was OC under Stoops.

If he wants to be a head coach somewhere then he interviews.

Doesn’t mean he takes it.

Knowing is half the battle, the other half is violence.

by onebarrelrum on Nov 27, 2011 6:40 PM EST reply actions

agree

he might take an interview (for the experience) but I don’t think he takes a job in the same conference as brother Bob.

by Wild@Heart Nole on Nov 27, 2011 7:37 PM EST up reply actions

he was a decent name but wouldn't classify him as hot shot name

Went 5-7 his last year at Buffalo. Barkley was pulling for him to get the Auburn job but don’t think he had much of a shot at it. Same with Nebraska but he’s got major ties there or I doubt we would have heard his name in conjuction with them.

Mangino had an offensive background (OC) at Oklahoma, Bill Young was the one who had Kansas playing great D. Todd Reesing was pretty lethal in that spread offense Mangino ran.

Plus I think it’s always easier to get fast undersized guys who might get overlooked by the big boys and put the ball in thier hands in space in a spread or run and shoot offense (Dexter McCluster type) than it is to get the type of defesive players who could compete against a Texas or OU. esp having acces to Texas and the speed that comes out of their.

by nappygoat on Nov 27, 2011 7:05 PM EST reply actions

I think Gill would have had other BCS offfers if he would have waited

Your right it was the Bill Young(now OK State D-Coordinator) defense that what helped them to the bowl

I see Kansas like Kansas State(except Kansas has more $) in the Big 12. Is it easy to win there? No, but as Bill Snyder has shown at K-State if you recruit right you can consistently have a winning team. Snyder went undefeated at K-State before and has a 136–68–1 career record.

It just depends on the type of person Mark Stoops is

Look at Gene Chizik he won a National Championship at Texas as a Defensive Coordinator to take a job at Iowa State the next year. Kansas has a lot more to offer then Iowa State. So it happens.

The reason why this is a situation to monitor is because of Mark Stoops ties to the Athletic Director which are very strong and the type of money Kansas can offer.

by Michael@TN on Nov 27, 2011 7:28 PM EST reply actions

I think Chizik it a perfect example why I wouldn't take that job

He was a very hot name when he left Texas coming off of his stints at Auburn and Texas and he failed terribly at Iowa St., and If not for his success while at Auburn I very much doubt he would have gotten such a good oppurtunity so soon. It could have potentialy derailed his career, a lot of people still don’t think much of him as a coach for what happened why at Iowa St.

I’m not dismissing the possibilty by any means just saying I wouldn’t take that job if I was a premier cordinator who has options.

If I’m an older coach at a mid level school like Jerry Kill was at NIU or a postion coach like Ted Roof was at USC or a retread like Bob Davie or Ty Willingham then sure I’d take it but not if I was a “hot shot” coordinator who could land at a place far more desirable if patient.

Stoops can do a lot better than Kansas.

I’d rather start at a solid C-USA/MWC team than Kansas.

Dear DC Stoops

I know you are going to leave to become the HNIC, but please go somewhere better than KU.

Otherwise they would’ve probably just kept Gill.

Also the Athletic Director has a football background being a recruiting coordinator for multiple colleges

That’s the only reason I knew about Stoops connection

Corey also says Fedora is there top candidate

Fedora should be at Ole Miss anytime soon. Not sure where he also see the Fedora to Kansas. i haven’t seen any KU Media mention him as the top candidate. Mostly been Mike Leach who the KU media list at #1(which I don’t see happening due to his baggage)

And they're only the 2nd best football program in Kansas.

And right there with Baylor and Iowa State as worst in a 10-team Big 12.
