There's one question on the tip of every Florida State fan's tongue: in what bowl will FSU play?
I've got good news and bad news. The good news is that it's almost certainly going to be the Chick-Fil-A bowl (Atlanta, December 31st) or the Champs Sports Bowl (Orlando, December 29th).
The bad news is that it's impossible to make a call at this point because of the ACC Championship Game.
The Chick-Fil-A bowl gets to select before the Champs. It's thought that they want to select Auburn, as Auburn fans would flock to Atlanta to support the Tigers, and Auburn hasn't been to Atlanta in quite a while.
Auburn and Virginia Tech would be a great matchup in Atlanta. But for that to happen, Clemson would have to beat Virginia Tech in the ACC title game. And that seems less than likely, as Tech is a 7.5-point favorite and Clemson has collapsed down the stretch.
So what if Clemson loses, as expected? Would the Chick-Fil-A bowl take Auburn and Clemson? Seems unlikely. Here's why:
Clemson played at Auburn in 2010. Auburn played at Clemson in 2011. And next year, these two open the season in Atlanta. Would the bowl committee (also tied to the Chick-Fil-A kickoff game in which these two will open the 2012 season) really want a repeat of its bowl game to open the 2012 year? Highly doubtful.
So if Virginia Tech beats Clemson ---> and the committee wants Auburn as its SEC team ---> then FSU has a decent shot to go to Atlanta.
If the Chick-Fil-A ends up with a different SEC team (unlikely), then the ACC championship loser seems like an easy choice and FSU would be out.
In that case, FSU would be close to a lock to play Notre Dame in the Champs Sports Bowl.
