Stats are pre-garbage time

Here it is, another edition of the Florida State Film Review. Unless you're in Jimbo's office, this is the only place you'll find a complete breakdown of every meaningful play run by the 'Noles. This week, we break down FSU's domination of Boston College in anticipation of the Miami game.

Boston College is by no means a good football team. And they are certainly not well coached. But playing on only four days of rest is never an easy task, especially not when traveling. FSU did what it should do against a bad football team by taking care of business early.

This takes a lot of time and is a total team effort from our group. If you enjoy it, send it to a few friends using the twitter and facebook buttons abov

Dwn Yd Play Formation Analysis
HOPKINS,D. kickoff 70 yards to the BC0, touchback.   Boom. Excellent kickoff.

1-10 Bc20 Finch,R rush for loss of 1 yard to the BC19 (WILLIAMS,V.;BRADHAM,N.).   Tremendous push by Everett Dawkins and Amp McCloud to stop the inside run.
2-11 Bc19 Finch,R rush for 3 yards to the BC22 (MCCLOUD,A.).   The entire defensive line had great push here. Wow. Would be a TFL is Vince Williams didn't press his gap.
3-8 Bc22 Rettig,C pass complete to Larmond,C for 7 yards to the BC29 (JONES,C.).   TE twist, ineffective and Bjoern Werner runs past the hole. Brandon Jenkins good pressure off the backside. Throw complete, tackle made.
Drive: 3 plays, 9 yards, TOP 02:03   Excellent opening drive and it sets up good field position.

4-1 Bc29 Quigley,R punt 33 yards to the FS38, fair catch by REID,G..   Smart fair catch.

1-10 Fs38 FREEMAN,D. rush for 2 yards to the FS40 (Kuechly,L;Appiah,D). 21 gun twins Stretch to the weak side, Zebrie Sanders beat across his face.
2-8 Fs40 MANUEL,E rush for 5 yards to the FS45, fumble by MANUEL,E recovered by FS O'LEARY,N. at FS45, O'LEARY,N. for no gain to the FS45 (Kuechly,L). 11 gun Straight drop, E.J. Manuel can't find anyone open. But there is no pressure and he decides to run. BC isn't even really rushing here. This is EJ's fault. Needs to wait and find someone open rather than taking an unnecessary hit.
3-3 Fs45 MANUEL,E rush for no gain to the FS45 (Appiah,D). 11 gun trips field Manuel has all the time in the world and can't find anyone open. But he panics in the pocket again, and again, there was no need. There was no pass pressure here.
Drive: 3 plays, 7 yards, TOP 02:07   This is mostly on Manuel. He needs to have a better sense of pressure.

4-3 Fs45 POWELL,S. punt 50 yards to the BC5, out-of-bounds.   A good rugby punt becomes a great rugby punt when it rolls 10 extra yards. Well done.

1-10 Bc05 Finch,R rush for 3 yards to the BC8 (JENKINS,B.;MCCLOUD,A.).   Dawkins takes on a double, McCloud scrapes down the line, and Jenkins beats his man. BC's offensive line is not very good.
2-7 Bc08 Finch,R rush for loss of 6 yards to the BC2, fumble forced by MCCLOUD,A., fumble by Finch,R recovered by FS SMITH,T. BC2.   Dawkins and McCloud dominant on the inside again, McCloud forces the fumble and Telvin Smith is jonny on the spot with the recovery. This was all Dawkins and McCloud.
Drive: 2 plays, minus 3 yards, TOP 00:42   BC's offensive line did not come to play. FSU's did.

1-G Bc02 WILDER,J rush for loss of 1 yard to the BC3 (Duggan,S;Appiah,D). 22 i Faircloth pulls on the power, Jabaris Little misses his block, Wilder is stuffed. Why in the world does Jabaris Little continue to get playing time? You have all these star receivers. Spread it out and forget this multi-TE stuff until Cristo Courtzidis gets here. Also, might have been a false start.
2-G Bc03 PENALTY FS false start 5 yards to the BC8. 02 gun Faircloth
2-G Bc08 MANUEL,E pass complete to REED,B. for 8 yards to the BC0, TOUCHDOWN, clock 09:07. 02 gun Post to Bert Reed, well protected, well-designed play, accurate throw by Manuel.
    HOPKINS,D. kick attempt good.
Florida State 7, Boston College 0
Drive: 2 plays, 2 yards, TOP 01:01   Nothing special, but it was effective.

    HOPKINS,D. kickoff 67 yards to the BC3, Evans,S return 25 yards to the BC28 (PARKS,T.).

1-10 Bc28 Finch,R rush for 5 yards to the BC33 (BRADHAM,N.).   Vince Williams can't get off his block and BC picks up 5.
2-5 Bc33 Rettig,C pass complete to Finch,R for loss of 8 yards to the BC25 (BRADHAM,N.).   Very late developing screen. BC's offense is a mess and Nigel Bradham reads this easily.
3-13 Bc25 Rettig,C pass complete to Larmond,C for 9 yards to the BC34 (REID,G.).   Receiver catches the curl, FSU swarms and makes the tackle.
Drive: 3 plays, 6 yards, TOP 02:15   FSU is dominating BC, but remember, this offense is pretty bad. Then again, you want to dominate bad ofenses.

4-4 Bc34 Quigley,R punt 52 yards to the FS14, downed.   Greg Reid needs to catch the damn football. Big screwup here.

1-10 Fs14 MANUEL,E pass complete to PRYOR,L. for 12 yards to the FS26, 1ST DOWN FS (Rositano, S). 21 i Bootleg off PA. Throw to Lonnie Pryor is not good, but Pryor makes the best of it. Strong blocks by Rodney Smith and Jarred Haggins.
1-10 Fs26 MANUEL,E pass incomplete to SMITH,R.. 21 i quick out to Smith, Smith runs a poor route. A bit lazy here, rounds it off and then drifts.
2-10 Fs26 MANUEL,E rush for 11 yards to the FS37, 1ST DOWN FS (Kuechly,L). 21 i QB sweep off PA. Excellent blocks by Beau Reliford, Lonnie Pryor and Faircloth.
1-10 Fs37 MANUEL,E sacked for loss of 6 yards to the FS31 (Divitto,S). 21 i FSU has 6 pass protectors and BC rushes 5. Jermaine Thomas with the huge mental error, turns his man free. His guy crushes EJ, and Thomas sits on the bench for the rest of the game.
2-16 Fs31 PENALTY FS false start 5 yards to the FS26. 21 gun Zebrie false starts. He started falling back in his stance.
2-21 Fs26 MANUEL,E rush for 7 yards to the FS33 (Asprilla,M). 11 gun BC drops 7 into coverage, two FSU receivers run into each other, nobody open, good scramble. Pass pro was fine.
3-14 Fs33 MANUEL,E sacked for loss of 7 yards to the FS26 (Asprilla,M). 11 gun the QB is always accountable for the corner blitz. EJ does not scan for it and gets dropped.
Drive: 6 plays, 12 yards, TOP 03:20   Have to get better QB play than this.

4-21 Fs26 POWELL,S. punt 44 yards to the BC30, downed.   44 yards isn't too bad.

1-10 Bc30 Team rush for loss of 9 yards to the BC21, fumble by Team recovered by BC Rettig,C at BC19.   FSU gets credit here for a -9 yard play, but this is all BC.
2-21 Bc19 Finch,R rush for no gain to the BC19 (JERNIGAN,T.).   Zone run by BC, BC is supposed to double Timmy Jernigan and they do not, giving Timmy an easy opportunity for the swim move and the highlight tackle.
3-21 Bc19 Finch,R rush for no gain to the BC19 (WERNER,B.;JERNIGAN,T.).   Straight handoff, Werner blows by his man and kills the runner. This is a give-up play.
Drive: 3 plays, minus 11 yards, TOP 02:05   Lots of mistakes by BC here, with FSU taking advantage.

4-21 Bc19 Quigley,R punt 37 yards to the FS44, fair catch by REID,G..   Not a great punt, but they are scared of Reid.

1-10 Fs44 MANUEL,E rush for 5 yards to the FS49 (Kuechly,L). 21 i Option to the strong side. Bobby Hart and Lonnie Pryor with good blocks. EJ correct decision to tuck it.
2-5 Fs49 PRYOR,L. rush for 9 yards to the BC42, 1ST DOWN FS (Hughes,H;Kuechly,L). 21 gun twins field Misdirection to Pryor, catches the backers fast flowing, Lonnie runs hard and Faircloth gets an excellent block.
1-10 Bc42 MANUEL,E pass complete to REED,B. for 16 yards to the BC26, 1ST DOWN FS (Hughes,H). 21 gun twins field EJ drifts into pressure, but gets out of it, then finds Bert Reed on the scramble drill. Excellent work on the broken play.

    2nd Quarter

1-10 Bc26 MANUEL,E rush for 5 yards to the BC21. 11 gun strong Play action boot, excellent fake. Thought EJ had Shaw open here, but he ran it.
2-5 Bc21 MANUEL,E rush for 3 yards to the BC18 (Kuechly,L). 11 gun strong QB sweep. This is pretty screwed up by a number of blockers and should have gone for a big play because FSU had numbers.
3-2 Bc18 FREEMAN,D. rush for 6 yards to the BC12, 1ST DOWN FS, out-of-bounds (Kuechly,L). 22 i Option to the boundary. Hart is slow off the ball and gets submarined. Jabaris Little gets PANCAKED. He is horrible. Excellent effort by EJ and excellent pitch. EJ took a big shot here. Should not have at all. Little cannot play. At all.
1-10 Bc12 FREEMAN,D. rush for 12 yards to the BC0, 1ST DOWN FS, TOUCHDOWN, clock 13:09. 21 gun twins field Lead stretch to the field. Excellent blocks by Sanders, Pryor and Smith. Devonta doesn't mess around. Well done.
    HOPKINS,D. kick attempt good.
Florida State 14, Boston College 0
Drive: 7 plays, 56 yards, TOP 03:18   Sloppy, but effective. Both offenses very sloppy on short rest. Luckily, FSU has better players.

Star-divide

HOPKINS,D. kickoff 63 yards to the BC7, Evans,S return 18 yards to the BC25 (PARKS,T.).   Decent hangtime, but FSU's coverage team is insane. Karlos Williams destroys his man.

1-10 Bc25 Finch,R rush for no gain to the BC25 (CARRADINE,C.).   Anthony McCloud! Drives his man 3 yards into the backfield. Wowzers. Excellent job to stay low and explode off the snap.
2-10 Bc25 Rettig,C sacked for loss of 3 yards to the BC22 (JOYNER,L.).   Carradine loses contain, but Joyner destroys Rettig as he tries to scramble. Lamarcus Joyner's closing speed is insane.
3-13 Bc22 Rettig,C pass incomplete to Swigert,B.   6-man blitz. I think Stoops just wants to have fun here, because there is no reason to do so. BC drops the catch, but it would have been tackled well short of the marker anyway.
Drive: 3 plays, minus 3 yards, TOP 01:31

4-13 Bc22 Quigley,R punt 47 yards to the FS31, REID,G. return -1 yards to the FS30 (Kuechly,L).   Great punt. Greg needs to fair catch this ball.

1-10 Fs30 MANUEL,E pass complete to O'LEARY,N. for 58 yards to the BC12, 1ST DOWN FS (Divitto,S;Louis-Jean,A). 21 gun 21 gun. Play action, BC rushes only 3, EJ doesn't run himself into trouble, protection is very good. Nick O'Leary does a nice job not running too far and giving EJ room. He does fumble, though. I think.
1-10 Bc12 FREEMAN,D. rush for 11 yards to the BC1, 1ST DOWN FS (Divitto,S). 21 gun twins field Lead stretch to the field. Not a great block by Sanders, but Devonta Freeman could have pressed the hole and had a nice run to the front side. As it was, he took a risk, reversed field, and made a great run.Risky, but he made it work. On 4-days rest, you'll take that. But I bet he got chewed for this.
1-G Bc01 FREEMAN,D. rush for no gain to the BC1 (Rositano, S;Kuechly,L). 21 i twins field Inside zone, not poorly blocked, think Freeman needs to push the hole.
2-G Bc01 MANUEL,E rush for 1 yard to the BC0, TOUCHDOWN, clock 10:24. GL Sneak, easy, but Fahrenkrug definitely false started here.
    HOPKINS,D. kick attempt good.
Florida State 21, Boston College 0
Drive: 4 plays, 70 yards, TOP 01:14   Excellent drive by FSU, and it wasn't all BC mistakes or athleticism. There was some executon.

HOPKINS,D. kickoff 48 yards to the BC22, downed.   Weird kickoff. Actually bounced!

1-10 Bc22 Rettig,C pass complete to Amidon,A for 6 yards to the BC28 (JONES,C.).   Straight drop, BC hits the curl. FSU basically giving this to them here, expecting run. Reid a yard too far off?
2-4 Bc28 Rettig,C pass incomplete.   Nigel Bradham with excellent coverage on a crossing route, and Rettig is off target.
3-4 Bc28 Rettig,C pass complete to Swigert,B for 4 yards to the BC32, PENALTY BC holding 10 yards to the BC18, NO PLAY.   Jenkins splits a double team and is blatantly held . Great effort.
3-14 Bc18 Rettig,C pass complete to Swigert,B for 12 yards to the BC30 (PARKS,T.).   12 on 14? Punt. Nice tackle by Terrance Parks.
Drive: 3 plays, 8 yards, TOP 01:59   Excellent FSU defense here. Maybe the best series of the night.

4-2 Bc30 Quigley,R punt 28 yards to the FS42, REID,G. return 1 yards to the FS43 (Rositano, S).   Not much of a punt.

1-10 Fs43 MANUEL,E pass complete to PRYOR,L. for 13 yards to the BC44, 1ST DOWN FS, out-of-bounds (Sylvia,S). 20 gun PA, good protection, Lonnie nice juke to get 5 more.
1-10 Bc44 MANUEL,E pass complete to REED,B. for 11 yards to the BC33, 1ST DOWN FS, out-of-bounds. 20 gun good protection, play action, hits Bert on the short side deep comeback.
1-10 Bc33 MANUEL,E pass incomplete. 20 gun Play action, zone blitz, handled very well. EJ has plenty of time, no pressure, yet poor footwork causes an awful throw.
2-10 Bc33 FREEMAN,D. rush for 11 yards to the BC22, 1ST DOWN FS (Kuechly,L;Sylvia,S). 20 gun lead stretch to the boundary (weak). Zebrie whiffs, but Fahrenkrug and Barron have nice blocks, as do Pryor and Reed. Very nice run by Devonta to dodge defenders.
1-10 Bc22 FREEMAN,D. rush for 3 yards to the BC19 (Edebali,K;Kuechly,L). 20 gun lead stretch to the boundary (weak). Not a great job by Sanders, but Freeman puts his head down and gets 3. Well played by BC.
2-7 Bc19 MANUEL,E rush for 7 yards to the BC12, 1ST DOWN FS, out-of-bounds. 11 ace trips field Motion to ace regular. Boot to the boundary, excellent block Beau Reliford. EJ smartly gets out of bounds.
1-10 Bc12 FREEMAN,D. rush for 4 yards to the BC8 (Clancy,N). 11 ace motion to 11 ace strong field. Inside zone, nice blocks by Faircloth and Hart. Good cut Freeman. Falls down too early here.
2-6 Bc08 FREEMAN,D. rush for 5 yards to the BC3 (Duggan,S;Keyes,J). 21 gun twins field Inside zone w/ Pryor lead. Nice block Pryor. Decent run, Fahrenkrug doesn't get his cutoff and prevents the score.
3-1 Bc03 FREEMAN,D. rush for 3 yards to the BC0, 1ST DOWN FS, TOUCHDOWN, clock 04:51. 21 gun twins field Inside zone w/ pryor lead. Excellent blocks by Hart and Pryor. Very nice cutback Freeman.
    HOPKINS,D. kick attempt good.
Florida State 28, Boston College 0
Drive: 9 plays, 57 yards, TOP 03:34   Very nice drive. These inside zones may have been reads, though EJ kept none of them. It's a safe play to run, as the D must account for EJ, but he only runs it if it is open.

HOPKINS,D. kickoff 66 yards to the BC4, Evans,S return 20 yards to the BC24 (PARKS,T.).   Not too bad. Tougher to kick in 50 degree weather.

1-10 Bc24 Bordner,J rush for 25 yards to the BC49, 1ST DOWN BC (MOODY,N.).   Jenkins loses contain v. Zone read, and this new QB runs for a big, big gain. BC is so tricky! Fooled everyone, and Joyner poor angle on the tackle.
1-10 Bc49 Bordner,J rush for 6 yards to the FS45 (ERVING,C.).   QB draw, not very well done, but FSU is in pass-rush mode and seems it is not interested in playing the run.
2-4 Fs45 Finch,R rush for 2 yards to the FS43 (JENKINS,B.).   Zone read, BC's Qb messes up the read, and Jenkins/Jernigan play it very well.
3-2 Fs43 Bordner,J rush for 1 yard to the FS42 (JONES,C.;MOODY,N.).   Werner overplays the zone read, and is juked because he is off balance. Still, not bad defense.
4-1 Fs42 Bordner,J rush for 4 yards to the FS38, 1ST DOWN BC (WILLIAMS,V.).   Power play from empty? Creative, BC. Jenkins is washed inside and Bradham is trapped.
1-10 Fs38 Timeout Florida State, clock 02:06.
1-10 Fs38 Finch,R rush for loss of 1 yard to the FS39 (BRADHAM,N.).   After a timeout, FSU closes down the zone read. Jenkins and Bradham close very well.
2-11 Fs39 Bordner,J pass complete to Swigert,B for 37 yards to the FS2, 1ST DOWN BC (JOYNER,L.).   FSU is playing Tampa 2 coverage, I think. Vince Williams doesn't drop deep enough and the ball goes over his head. Nick Moody poor angle allows WR to make 15 more yards.
1-G Fs02 Finch,R rush for 1 yard to the FS1 (WILLIAMS,V.;ERVING,C.).   Goal line run and FSU stacks it up. Cameron Erving nice job to get skinny and get penetration. Good job to converge by Jenkins.
2-G Fs01 Timeout Boston College, clock 00:49.
2-G Fs01 Finch,R rush for loss of 1 yard to the FS2, fumble by Finch,R recovered by FS WERNER,B. at FS2.   Backup QB and backup RB mess up the snap? Who woulda thunk it. FSU didn't do anything special here.
Drive: 9 plays, 74 yards, TOP 04:08   BC got FSU here with this third-string QB who had never played a down. FSU totally unprepred, but I don't ding them for that.
Dwn Yd Play Formation Analysis
    3rd Quarter

Quigley,R kickoff 70 yards to the FS0, JOYNER,L. return 20 yards to the FS20 (Rositano, S).   Pretty deep kickoff.

1-10 Fs20 MANUEL,E pass complete to PRYOR,L. for 1 yard to the FS21 (Kuechly,L). 21 i twins field Bootleg to the field. Not a bad fake, BC just plays this very well. Smith needs a better block.
2-9 Fs21 MANUEL,E pass complete to O'LEARY,N. for 6 yards to the FS27 (Kuechly,L;Duggan,S). 11 gun All curls, good protection, 3-step, good throw, good route, good catch.
3-3 Fs27 MANUEL,E pass complete to FREEMAN,D. for 8 yards to the FS35, 1ST DOWN FS (Divitto,S). 11 gun FSU wants the deep ball, BC covers it, EJ waits a long time to throw to the open Freeman, not a good throw, Freeman catches it anyway. Poor footwork by EJ.
1-10 Fs35 MANUEL,E rush for loss of 9 yards to the FS26, fumble by MANUEL,E recovered by BC Duggan,S at FS26. 21 gun twins field EJ loses concentration and fumbles the snap
Drive: 4 plays, 6 yards, TOP 01:57   Two nice plays, one nice play by BC, and one mental error by FSU.

1-10 Fs26 Rettig,C pass complete to Amidon,A for 7 yards to the FS19 (BRADHAM,N.).   In-&-out route. WR on Bradham. Mismatch. Quick game.
2-3 Fs19 PENALTY BC illegal procedure 5 yards to the FS24.
2-8 Fs24 Finch,R rush for 3 yards to the FS21 (SMITH,T.).   Bradham's foot got stepped on, otherwise this is a stop for minimal gain.
3-5 Fs21 Rettig,C pass complete to Finch,R for 10 yards to the FS11, 1ST DOWN BC (PARKS,T.).   FSU brings the zone blitz and BC handles it very well, quickly flipping to the back.
1-10 Fs11 Finch,R rush for 4 yards to the FS7 (PARKS,T.).   Bradham doesn't hold the edgs and other backers don't fill quick enough.
2-6 Fs07 PENALTY BC false start 5 yards to the FS12.
2-11 Fs12 Rettig,C pass incomplete.   Excellent blitz, forces wild throw. This SHOULD be intentional grounding. He is not out of the pocket and flings the ball way out of bounds.
3-11 Fs12 Rettig,C pass complete to Swigert,B for 12 yards to the FS0, 1ST DOWN BC, TOUCHDOWN, clock 09:56.   Zone blitz, Rettig drifts to his left and hits the open receiver. Harris has help to the inside and is too loose against the WR.
    Freese,N kick attempt good.
Florida State 28, Boston College 7
Drive: 6 plays, 26 yards, TOP 03:07   Was more disappointed in this drive than the long drive to end the 2Q. BC had plays of 7, 3, 10, 4, and 12.

Quigley,R kickoff 70 yards to the FS0, touchback.

1-10 Fs20 FREEMAN,D. rush for 5 yards to the FS25 (Divitto,S). 21 gun twins field Lead stretch to the field, Pryor and Fahrenkrug nice blocks.
2-5 Fs25 PRYOR,L. rush for 2 yards to the FS27 (Duggan,S). 21 gun twins field Misdirection to Pryor, Hart misses hit cutoff block.
3-3 Fs27 MANUEL,E pass incomplete to GREEN,C.. 11 gun strong field EJ throws to Green, who is clearly interfered with. Freeman is wide, wide open, and you can question if EJ should have worked the curl/flat to the boundary instead of going to the field side, but once he chooses to work the reads to the field, he can't suddenly swing to the boundary. Green WAS the appropriate throw to make once he decided to work the field side.
Drive: 3 plays, 7 yards, TOP 01:34   FSU has to punt, but there weren't big FSU mistakes here. Not a bad drive, considering the missed call.

4-3 Fs27 POWELL,S. punt 36 yards to the BC37, downed.   Bad, bad punt.

1-10 Bc37 Finch,R rush for no gain to the BC37 (WILLIAMS,V.).   Typical power run. Jenkins gets too far inside, but it works because of his high effort. Christian Jones and Vince Williams play this well.
2-10 Bc37 Rettig,C pass complete to Coleman,J for 5 yards to the BC42 (BRADHAM,N.).   Soft zone coverage, BC completes it to the flats. FSU basically allowing this uncontested.
3-5 Bc42 Rettig,C pass incomplete to Elliott,D.   Werner gets caught inside, loses contain. Rettig scrambles out. BC should have hit this play, as a guy was open.
Drive: 3 plays, 5 yards, TOP 01:19   Really not a great defensive series, but successful.

4-5 Bc42 Quigley,R punt 18 yards to the FS40, downed.   Not to be upstaged by FSU's horrible punt on the previous series, BC comes right back with one.

1-10 Fs40 MANUEL,E pass complete to SMITH,R. for 18 yards to the BC42, 1ST DOWN FS (Asprilla,M). 11 gun strong field Play action roll to the field, good ball to Rodney Smith, nice run after catch. This play-action stuff worked well all night.
1-10 Bc42 MANUEL,E rush for 15 yards to the BC27, 1ST DOWN FS (Holloway,M). 20 gun Zone read, Lonnie pulls off the backside, making me think this was designed. Good run, EJ doesn't take a hit. Excellent block by Sanders.
1-10 Bc27 PRYOR,L. rush for loss of 2 yards to the BC29 (Duggan,S). 20 gun Lead stretch to Pryor (you know Fisher is just giving him some fun carries now). Hart misses the blitzer and this gets blown up. Good job by Pryor to get upfield.
2-12 Bc29 MANUEL,E pass incomplete (Duggan,S). 20 gun Awful play. Bobby Hart gets overextended and allows a bad pressure. He's 17. Ej is not, and he drifts right and throws late over the middle. Ball should have been picked off.
3-12 Bc29 MANUEL,E rush for no gain to the BC29 (Kuechly,L;Appiah,D). 20 gun QB sweep, think they wanted EJ to get OOB here, but O'Leary misses a block and EJ has to cut it up inside. Didn't like this playcall (or if it was a check, I didn't like EJ checking to it). But then, I can understand FSU wanting to get out of the drive with Bobby Hart self destructing.
4-12 Bc29 HOPKINS,D. field goal attempt from 47 GOOD, clock 04:43.
Florida State 31, Boston College 7
Drive: 6 plays, 31 yards, TOP 02:20   Not a horrible drive.

HOPKINS,D. kickoff 67 yards to the BC3, Evans,S return 17 yards to the BC20 (WILLIAMS,K.).   Great kick cooverage by Williams and co.

1-10 Bc20 Bordner,J rush for 5 yards to the BC25 (MCCLOUD,A.).   Zone read, Dan Hicks doesn't play this all that well, Telvin Smith needs to get off his block better to.
2-5 Bc25 Finch,R rush for 4 yards to the BC29 (MCCLOUD,A.).   Telvin Smith gets blocked by the center and is late to make the tackle. Speed is supposed to be his game, right?
3-1 Bc29 PENALTY BC false start 5 yards to the BC24.
3-6 Bc24 Bordner,J pass intercepted by SMITH,T. at the BC27, SMITH,T. return 13 yards to the BC14.   Werner is held, but forces Rettig out of the pocket. Telvin gets the interception, but didn't really do much. Rettig just made a terrible throw. Was not great coverage or anything.
Drive: 3 plays, 4 yards, TOP 01:57   Not a great defensiv drive.

1-10 Bc14 PRYOR,L. rush for 7 yards to the BC7 (Kuechly,L). 21 gun Great blocking by literally everyone on that misdirection play.
2-3 Bc07 PRYOR,L. rush for 2 yards to the BC5 (Appiah,D). 21 gun twins field Same play, Barron lets the nose guard go. Not sure why, but pretty sure that's not the design.
3-1 Bc05 MANUEL,E rush for no gain to the BC5 (Kuechly,L). I form I don't think Fisher understood how long this "one" yard was. If he had, he probably would not have called the sneak.
4-1 Bc05 FREEMAN,D. rush for no gain to the BC5 (Sylvia,S). 21 gun twins field #1, it's the right call to GO for this. No doubt. This is not a bad playcall, and I think Devonta has it if he cuts it outside. Also, EJ could have flipped this to the other side to run behind Zebrie. It's not blocked all that poorly, really.
Drive: 4 plays, 9 yards, TOP 01:40   FSU has freshmen offensive linemen. This will play off next year.

1-10 Bc05 Rettig,C pass incomplete (WERNER,B.).   3-step game, FSU sitting in cover2. If Werner doesn't bat this down, it might be a pick-6. Great play.
2-10 Bc05 Finch,R rush for 2 yards to the BC7 (ERVING,C.).   Blockers controlled by Erving and Werner. Well done.
3-8 Bc07 Rettig,C pass complete to Larmond,C for 10 yards to the BC17, 1ST DOWN BC, out-of-bounds (JOYNER,L.).   A tough little in-&-out route w/ a rub. Pretty nice play, but Greg Reid should play this better.

    4th Quarter

1-10 Bc17 Finch,R rush for 8 yards to the BC25 (ERVING,C.).   Harris loses contain and Vince gets caught in the scrum. Otherwise, not poorly played. Harris needs to stay outside on this stretch play to the field.
2-2 Bc25 Finch,R rush for 6 yards to the BC31, 1ST DOWN BC (BRADHAM,N.).   Nigel a bit slow to react to this, but I also think he was thinking pass, as was the entire defense.
1-10 Bc31 Finch,R rush for 3 yards to the BC34 (JERNIGAN,T.).   Dawkins makes such a nice effort that it screws up everyone else's angle. Jernigan is a total freak. Not a bad play.
2-7 Bc34 Rettig,C pass intercepted by WERNER,B. at the BC36, WERNER,B. return 0 yards to the BC36.   Excellent, disciplined pressure by Jenkins and Jernigan. Werner realizes he won't get there and drops back into the passing lane for a very nice interception.
    Drive: 7 plays, 29 yards, TOP 02:41

After that, the game entered garbage time and I do not have time to analyze snaps occurring once the game is 100% in hand.

Thoughts:

I'm not sure the offense will ever look totally smooth with E.J. Manuel, but it can certainly be effective. FSU's offense is explosive, but inconsistent. That has a lot to do with all the injuries, youth and resulting lack of cohesion this season. But I'm totally convinced FSU can win a national title by running EJ a lot (if EJ stays healthy). With a QB like EJ, he can be elite if his legs are having involved. If not, he'll only be good. That said, I wasn't enamored with his play in this game.

-Jermaine Thomas may have totally ceded the #1 spot to Jermaine Thomas. The coaches were really angry about that whiff on the block. And they trust Freeman in pass pro. That's a good sign. He's a good back.

-FSU won without Rashad Greene, allowing him to rest up for Miami and not risk the ankle in the cold before being 100% healthy. BC played very conservative and took away the deep ball. Forcing it would have been pretty dumb.

-Kudos to the coaches for finding freshman center Austin Barron. This kid has added at least 25 pounds of good weight and really looks like a player! He had no major offers playing for a school like Aquinas. FSU has lost 5 of its top 9 offensive linemen since spring to injury (though Stork might come back this week).

-Beau Reliford played better in the blocking game, and Nick O'Leary was pretty good as well. Jabaris Little is terrible and Fisher should not play him. He keeps making bad, bad plays. Just spread it out with the wideouts.

Defensively, FSU is very good. They've stayed healthy, are well coached, and have a ton of talent. And I like how unselfish they are playing. I'm amazed that true freshman Jernigan is not hitting a wall. There's still a hole at safety (Moody/Parks), and you have to wonder just how behind Karlos Williams is.

FSU is getting great effort on its coverage teams.

That's a wrap for BC week. From now on, it's all Miami talk!

Freeman pass-pro

watched the game again on my DVR, Freeman made some great blocks, or at least great effort. I think Bud’s right, Freeman is now, without a doubt, our #1 back.

I think Devonta picks it up if Kenny doesn’t give up on his block. His man made the final hit.

That was a very frustrating play call. Lonnie Pryor NEEDS to be the go to guy on short yardage-whether that be via playaction or FB dive.

Why? He’s not a great runner and Freeman is very good.

Easier for him to fall forward and get yardage than Free and on playaction he is either uncovered or working with a mismatch every time.

He’s been here three years. If he was great in short yardage I bet they’d use him more.

I think it could partly be a case of taking one of your best blockers out of the equation. When LP has the ball, he’s not crushing someone.

They seemed more inclined to do so last year. The Ponder to Pryor playaction pass at the goaline on short yardage was used a few times including the bowl game v. USCe where CP short armed it to a wide open Pryor at the begining of the game.

No, what I'm saying is

We get 4 years of Bobby Hart. We are now guarantee# that at least one of those years of eligibility will be while he’s the age of a high school Junior. He’ll likely start next year, as you can probably would &Ave been the case no matter wha5, however he’ll never reach his full potential because even as a 4th year starter he’ll only be 20 years old. He’ll be playing against 22 and 23 year old men. Not having him that additi9nal year is a failure.

by AMFKNole on Nov 9, 2011 2:42 PM EST up reply actions

Ideally coaches would have loved to follow that plan but the OL injuries made it a neccessity. We’ve had up to three starters out on the oline at any given time. The only other option would have been to use Matias instead of Hart who Trickett has been grooming at OG and not OT.

by ONOLE05 on Nov 9, 2011 3:52 PM EST up reply actions

Eghhh I think you may be wrong

I thought the same and I thought he would killed out there as a 17 year old, but he has played surprisingly well for a 17 year old. Yes he has made plenty of mistakes but he has also sown some very good encouraging play. Yes red-shirting him would have been ideal but he is getting valuable reps now and I think he will be a stud the next 3 years, but for sure his junior and senior years.

disappointed on Ej's throws to the backs still.

Has gotten better but he lays em in too soft in the flats. Thought the O Line was sleep walking in this one, which could be expected. Much more to do and know on O than on D.

Good to see the WR taking every game serious. Very pleased with them though this entire year. Great job Coach Dawsey!

LB play has improved each week, thankfully, but Bo is so hot and cold along with little. Wonder if they have ever tried time at DE or Center?

So can we officially say Ty Jones career is done?

That’s two weeks in a row without a carry.

Although if Fisher wants to have 3 different backs carrying the ball. This game it was JT, DFree and LP, but I believe Ty was getting carries early in the year because LP seemed to be dinged up. Seems like he may just get another chance with JT’s latest blunder and Wilder’s ineffectiveness.

by FSUActuary on Nov 9, 2011 1:36 PM EST via mobile reply actions

Ty isn't the same

Even when he was inconsistent in his previous two years, he showed flashes of being a pretty decent back. I used to defend him, but he’s just nothing special at all when running the ball this year

On the Jermaine sack...

FSU has 6 pass protectors and BC rushes 5. Jermaine Thomas with the huge mental error, turns his man free. His guy crushes EJ, and Thomas sits on the bench for the rest of the game.

- Hart takes a step outside to take on the blitzing OLB
- meanwhile, the DE takes a step back, chips our TE, but then comes on the delayed blitz.
- Hart then shifts back in and takes on the DE without making any contact on that OLB, who then has a free shot at EJ.
- Looks like Jermaine watched Hart take a step out, diagnosed as Hart having the edge, and then moves into his screen route.

Can one of you OL guys break this down and tell me what Thomas did wrong, or what Hart did right? To me, it looks like Hart’s faux step towards the OLB tells Jermaine to proceed on to the interior. Would appreciate some insight into the keys/checks that the OT and RB have on a play like this at each stage.

by arrdub on Nov 9, 2011 2:16 PM EST reply actions

I just thought he went out too early. Had to make sure the blitzer wasn’t coming.

Tomahawk Nation Nole-Holds-Barred Analysis of FSU Sports!

by Bud Elliott on Nov 9, 2011 2:28 PM EST up reply actions

That's a simple enough explanation for me to buy.

At the same time, if you watch the progression you can understand why he thought the outside was covered. Hart kicks out towards the OLB for quite a few steps before completely bailing.

Think it was a well designed blitz/delay. With Jermaine heading up the gut on his route, it seems like he would have been more easily able to pick up a delayed blitz on the inside than to take the outside guy that Hart had seemingly already committed to.

In any event, if Jermaine got benched for it then I’m obviously off in my assessment.

You wrote:

“Bordner,J pass intercepted by SMITH,T. at the BC27, SMITH,T. return 13 yards to the BC14.”

“Werner is held, but forces Rettig out of the pocket. Telvin gets the interception, but didn’t really do much. Rettig just made a terrible throw. Was not great coverage or anything”

Just a typo Im assuming.

Kuechly

I won’t deny he was flying all over the field, but it’s almost comical what he gets credit for. I was at the game and the stadium announcer pretty much called his name for EVERY tackle regardless of where he was on the field.

Im not doubting Kuechly is a good player but....

What is his NFL projection? I guess what Im asking is, is he really as good as some would make him out to be just because he gets 5,000 (approximate number) tackles/game? His he good in coverage, play recognition, getting off of blocks, etc?

Judging an LB solely off of tackles is like judging a fielder in baseball off of fielding percentage.

by WPNoleJ on Nov 9, 2011 6:58 PM EST up reply actions

Well, he did have 20 tackles (12 unassisted?)

I don’t know how many plays we ran, but I’m willing to bet that makes up a large percentage of them.

Why don't we have Brooks playing opposite Joyner?

Both Parks and Moody are bad, plus Brooks always seems to be around the ball, making plays, and laying the wood when he’s on the field. If Karlos isn’t ready yet so be it, but I see no reason that T. Brooks shouldn’t be the safety opposit Joyner. So many of the big plays given up this year are due to horrible angles and coverage skills from Parks and Moody, it’s so frustrating!

Coaches probably feel that despite Moddy/Parks shortcomings they are the better bet b/c of experience vs. majority of teams who don’t have the personel to expose them anyways. That position hurt us big time v. Clemson, not sure UM poses enough of an aerial assualt to make us pay like that.
I’d be shocked if Brooks/Los are not splitting time at that spot next year full time with Parks graduating and Moody a candidate to go Mister Alexander.
