'Noles News 12/14/2011: Just How Bad Does Auburn Want Mark Stoops?

Yesterday came and went without any official announcement on Mark Stoops. However, today brings new speculation, as Auburn has offered Stoops over one million dollars. That's all very interesting, because Auburn just lost Gus Malzahn, who left for Arkansas State and took an enormous pay cut. Also, seriously, Auburn? $1M for Mark Stoops? Stoops is a good coach who has produced very good results with elite talent. I do not see him as a program changer as a DC. If Mark Stoops can get $1M a year, he should go. Seriously.

But things at Auburn seem strange to me. Stoops and Jimbo don't have an amazing relationship, but it seems crazy things are going down at Auburn. Why in the world would Malzahn take a 50-percent pay cut to become the head coach at Arkansas State?

Yesterday we covered some of the reasons why Stoops might leave, and some why he might stay. I'm not going to rehash those here. Basically, just take what I wrote yesterday, and make the number north of $1M. Obviously, FSU will not be matching that if it were true. Also, add Stoops questioning whether he should really take a job at Auburn, where people are fleeing like rats off a sinking ship.

Stoops will make money money next year no matter where he lands. I bet FSU is willing to go to ~575-725K (makes ~440K now). The devil you know... . As I believed yesterday, I still think Stoops is staying.

it does because out of the total amount of people in 7 games we could have fit in our stadium, we only filled it to ~95% capacity. 41 other schools had better accumulated attendance. that speaks a lot, but of course is explained by many factors.

by SimaNole on Dec 14, 2011 2:54 PM EST up reply actions

I’m not sure what you’re saying there

but 600k people is 600k people regardless if we did it at 92% or at 95 % capacity

70% capacity of a 100k stadium is still better than 100% capacity of a 40k stadium.

I get a little of what you’re trying to say, but 4 or 5 percentage points don’t mean a lot

"Kill a fly with an axe"

by SteadfastNole on Dec 14, 2011 7:54 PM EST up reply actions

i understand what you are saying regarding raw totals, but like it was mentioned above, i think it speaks about demand.

back to your example. yeah we could fill the same numbers as another school. but, if they did it at 100% capacity as opposed to say our 95% (yeah 5% isnt much until applied to large numbers), then there are people who just don’t care to go to our games even when room is available. the other school has demand for tickets beyond what they can fill. i want people to demand a seat at our games, but i know other factors make it difficult for our school as opposed to others.

by SimaNole on Dec 15, 2011 8:14 AM EST up reply actions

Gold jacket, green jacket, who gives a s*?

We have improved in this regard. Keep winning, Doak will be full and rocking. We’ll always fill up for UM, UF, and a big OOC game. Doak was ROCKING for OU. A couple of 10 win seasons and it’ll remain that good. Death Valley is only loud because the local populace loves to yell every third down for a 6-7 team coached by a clown, who already has a de facto HCIW. Our fans will show up with wins.

i’d like to say you contributed to the analysis… but i’m not sure if your response contained any meaningful points

by SimaNole on Dec 15, 2011 12:02 PM EST up reply actions

You say you want demand...

Would you rather be a UCF sized stadium that seats 45k people and then FSU would lead the nation in % in seats, or would you rather have at stadium that holds nearly twice that at 95% full. Seems to me the team would get a better home field advantage from a larger crowd and I personally prefer to not have to drop 100 per game to watch a football game. Ultimately the point is, that 40-50k may be loud…but I’d take 75-80 over that 40-50 every day stadium structure being identical in style.

by fsugrizz on Dec 15, 2011 4:40 PM EST up reply actions

i do agree. a larger number seems nice on paper. but looking at it on tv can be disappointing when the stadium isnt full.

by SimaNole on Dec 16, 2011 7:58 AM EST up reply actions

Thats TV though...

TV could make 80k seem like 90k as in the Swamp… or it can make 40k look like 10k as in Boston College… I’d rather Doak be rocking with as many people as possible then getting worried about whether attendance was 102% or 94% 75+k people is a lot of people and we do make noise…

by stevegrizzle on Dec 15, 2011 10:35 PM EST up reply actions

The demand is fine

As you alluded to, the “other factors” make it difficult for us to fill every seat every time. It’s not the price of the ticket but the price of gas, food, lodging and time that it takes for the vast majority of our fanbase to attend.

And all of these numbers are fudged to varying degrees. UF’s #s are outright lies. There were swaths empty seats for Furman and at least 10k empty for Vandy.

Most HC have a pretty big ego.

no way they are going to admit they can’t do the job by looking deperate and offering up their own money.

In this specific case Fisher would Fisher prefer to pay Stoops out of his pocket, or put that money into the research for his son’s disease? Seems like an easy choice to me.

Malzahn is thinking he will get out of Auburn while he can.

His offense minus Newton sucks. Ark St is a 10-2 team I think with most of the players returning. He can go there for one year, coach them to 11-1 and a bowl win and leave for a big HC job afterwards. I think that is his strategy anyway. His stock is dropping like a rock at Auburn.

When a guy like Chad Morris, 3 years removed from HS coaching, jumps from 80k to 1.3m in 5 years, it isn’t an indicator of him being a complete genius. It’s an indicator that his predecessor was a talent-ruining machine, and he was able to get young guys to buy in to the scheme and play well. Malzahn and Morris, good coaches? Definitely. Great coaches worth more than 1m/yr? Jury’s still out.

got great ties to the program and help create that 2001 team. I think the point is that Mullen wasn’t born and raised in FL and other then Meyer had no real connection to Florida. Much more pride in PA since thats were he grew up

when Mullen and Meyer had zero connection to UF because they were at Utah they were “Florida Guys”… No maybe I’m with Trick, but to me a Florida guy is a guy who grew up in Florida or has ties to the state and thus the program but not a temporary tie to the program. Completely, and totally, false. With SEC money/prestige you retain Stoops, Craig, Gran, etc.

Recruiting stays hot, you have the talent and coaching to succeed in SEC east. We were de facto SEC east champs last year, and barring insane injury luck we’d win it again (and the ACC for that matter). We are 2009 OU, with more injuries.

Shortest sighted thinking of all

No proof to back it up. If this was the case, why don’t ACC/Big East schools EVER contend for the National Title since the seismic TV money tilted the playing field. By does the most difficult conference always win the national title?

More to the point, please research the University of South Carolina pre joining the SEC and post joining the SEC.

Who is riding the weak schedule to a national title? How did that work out for Ok St, Stanford, VT, etc.

The money and competition in the SEC would make us better than we’ll ever be in the ACC.

I guess that is contending. This year we were 3rd in our division, which definitely is not…

by mcg3934 on Dec 16, 2011 12:19 PM EST up reply actions

Tied for 2nd

but 3rd due to tiebreaker and one game back record wise out of first in the division. I guess Arkansas isn’t a contender for the SEC either ya know? I mean they only went 10-2 but they finished third. They finished 6th in the BCS but since they

were 3rd in ourtheir division, which definitely is not…
clearly they weren’t really contending for anything.

See the issue is that to be a contender you’d expect to have a chance. We did. We blew those chances but we had them this year. Contending for a championship means that you’d expect 2-3/5 times you win the division and 1-2/5 you also win the conference. Would you say that UF has been a contender for the SEC East? They had a down year this year but that doesn’t mean they hadn’t been contending..

by fsugrizz on Dec 17, 2011 6:48 AM EST up reply actions

We're just going to have to agree to disagree here bro...

We haven’t won the ACC in 6 years. We’ve played in the ACCGC once in that same period. Call it what you will.

by mcg3934 on Dec 17, 2011 7:05 AM EST up reply actions

I guess we will have to agree to disagree

My contention is that contending doesn’t have to mean winning. i.e. Boise St has been a NC contender for the past couple of years but didn’t see a sniff of the BCS CG.

by fsugrizz on Dec 17, 2011 10:17 AM EST up reply actions

What top football programs does the Big East/ACC have?

Zero. Of course these teams are not competing for titles! The SEC has 4-5 of the most prestigious college football programs of all time. These teams would win titles in any conference.

Do you think Boise State would magically be able to compete for titles if they were in the SEC? Of course not! The would be a mid tier team at best in the SEC, just like us.

Couple of things...

Auburns defense wasnt great in.2010, IMO, and I was told Roof was encouraged to explore otger options.

Aa far as Malzahn goes, & admittedly this is not an original thought, ASU is a good sun belt program that is close to his hometown. Also, it appears that the hiring of Coordinators for first time HC’s could be trending downward. By going to Arky State, alot of the shortcomings he’ll most certainly have won’t be magnified a la Muschamp, Fisher. It seems that he can “figure it out” close to home, then come back for the right job at the right time.

IMO it’s a pretty prudent move, definitely focuses on.QOL and long term goals.

Auburn sold their soul, & it paid off. It won’t be rocky for long, IMO. Too many good things around them to stay down.

I guess my major problem with the whole Stoops thing is that he hasn’t said a word either way. If you’re entertaining it, great. If not, please say so. If FSU hasn’t offered him a raise, someone needs to start making phone calls. But all of this rumor and conjecture can’t be good for recruiting. Stoops has to know this at the bare minimum, and I am just confused as to why he’d let it continue if there’s no truth to it.

Auburn and FSU can work out a deal here

Auburn gets Mark Stoops as DC at a discount, say $700k, but they have to put the extra cash towards hiring Clemson’s Chad Morris to replace Malzahn.

Considering we’ve got Greg Hudson to replace Stoops, and Clemson has to rely on whoever Dabo can find, I think we’ll come out ahead on that deal easily. No way Dabo makes all star hires in consecutive seasons.

I went to the Liberty Bowl after the 09 season in which Arkansas and East Carolina played. ECU was physical and disciplined and punched Arkansas in the mouth and if not for like 5 missed FGs would have beaten Arkansas. So there’s an example of a Hudson coached defense with way less talented players against an SEC offense. I have confidence in Hudson if he becomes DC at any point.

Mark Stoops was exactly what FSU needed, when it needed it.

Turned around the defense & made it elite. Hudson’s defenses were known to force a ridiculous amount of turnovers, and to play about their talent on a consistent basis. The turnover margin is something FSU can improve upon to take the step from “elite” to “out of this world”.

Such arbitrary numeric standards. Failing to see the attractiveness of a staff of talented recruiters, a program with good resources and facilities, and then claiming that they’re dirtier than the rest of their competitors smacks of naivete.

I'm halfway between the viewpoints, really.

I think their staff is very aggressive to get their product in front of recruits (mostly because they haven’t done anything as of late).

Secondly, I think Clemson would be a desirable place to play, honestly. Which is why I think financial incetives to bigtime recruits is smart on.their part. Everything to gain, not much to lose.

But their recruits do some duuuumb stuff.

Unfounded for now. Did you see how quickly Clowney tuned in to Clemson late in the game last year?

They’ve seen a ridiculous amount of elite recruits coming through the past few years. A lot of them from Florida, no less.

Clemson has been relatively comparable to FSU the past ~ 5-6 years

and I don’t hear anybody questioning how FSU is able to pull in 3 straight top 10 classes. I agree with everything DK has said.

by ggggmen08 on Dec 14, 2011 7:12 PM EST up reply actions

But what does that matter?

If Clemson and others are paying and FSU is not, why would the kids decide to pass up the money and go to FSU? Because FSU is in their home state? That doesn’t make sense at all.

A lot of these kids grow up without money. If money were offered by one school and not the other, the kid is gonna follow the money. Where the talent is located would be a moot point.

by ggggmen08 on Dec 14, 2011 8:47 PM EST up reply actions

I think you misunderstood

If both are paying I would assume the kid would stay closer to home. If both are not paying I would still assume the majority would stay closer to home.

So basically the reason people don’t question why FSU is able to pull in 3 straight top ten classes vs Clemson’s classes is because all things being equal FSU should pull in better classes. Because of the talent in FL compared to the talent in SC.

Not to say Clemson doesn’t have a lot to offer a recruit, just that most recruits will stay close to home. I wouldn’t expect FSU to be able to consistently pull top SC kids from Clemson either.

by FSUKook on Dec 14, 2011 8:59 PM EST up reply actions

Others in this thread have implied that others cheat, but FSU doesn't

If all things are equal, yes FSU should have better classes. But if Clemson is cheating and FSU is not, it doesn’t make sense that FSU would be able to outrecruit Clemson.

Do you agree that if Clemson were paying and FSU was not that Clemson would get the recruits?

by ggggmen08 on Dec 14, 2011 9:03 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah of course.

Just like if FSU were paying and USCe and Clemson weren’t FSU fans would be talking about the amazing job Clowney did at FSU this year.

But since none of this can be proven anyways…

everyone cheats. Our recruits just don’t provide pictures of themselves holding wads of cash.

by xnolex on Dec 14, 2011 9:22 PM EST up reply actions

That is a good point.

I don’t think that is proof one team is not doing it. But it raises the question why other teams recruits can take picture with huge sums of cash or ridding in their brand new corvette.

by FSUKook on Dec 14, 2011 9:32 PM EST up reply actions

Yea but

Clemson can’t pay every top recruit in Florida and that explains why they can only get certain recruits from Florida and not all

by TheRenegade29 on Dec 15, 2011 6:43 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

I also agree with DK, just that some schools can hide it better. When New Mexico State starts pulling elite recruits out of Fl people are gonna ask questions.

Not to mention if he didnt enjoy carrying our offense, he will have a blast with Auburn's..

Somewhere in the 100-110 ranked offense nationally. They absolutely suck which is exactly why the quickest way for their OC to become a HC is to get the hell out of there before his stock drops and he gets booted by rabid Auburn fans who realize Newton carried him.

There's something fishy

I don’t know what’s going on but first Auburn’s Defensive Coordinator Ted Roof leaves to be a defensive coordinator at Central Florida then a week later their offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn leaves taking a 40% pay cut to be the head coaching job at Arkansas State. I wonder how likable Gene Chizik is cause there has to be a reason these guys are booking it out of there. I think that there is a good chance Stoops in just flirting with Auburn so FSU steps up and gives him a pay increase.

by nolefansteve on Dec 15, 2011 1:17 AM EST reply actions

I don’t think there is any doubt that Roof was effectively fired, is there?

As for Malzahn, I wouldn’t be surprised to find out he was unhappy at Auburn, but let’s not discount the allure of being a head coach. If he was unhappy at Auburn, however, it almost certainly was because he was being limited in what he was allowed to do. Auburn was 110th in the country in total plays run in 2011. That’s not what Malzahn wants. Plus it seems obvious that Malzahn was getting bypassed for bigger HC jobs (maybe because of his wife, who knows) – look at how many good jobs were open this year and he was bypassed. There are plenty of people in the world that give up higher paying jobs in exchange for more control over their own destiny or to run their own business/company. I guess it just seems unusual in college coaching these days since it seems like coaches are just going wherever they can find the biggest pile of cash.

That said, I wouldn’t be surprised if Stoops is trying to leverage Auburn to get more money from FSU. I doubt it would be taking this long to play out if it was all a slam dunk.

by whodoes on Dec 15, 2011 2:37 AM EST up reply actions

Simply brainstorming here...

Do we know if the entire Cam Newton Was Paid Lots of Dough Scandal’s fallout has fallen? This, the clearest pay for play scenario I recall ever taking place since SMU paved the way went largely untouched – certainly by the NCAA. Thinking about it, it took forever for the fine folks in Indianapolis to climb down from their ivory tower and give us a verdict in our academic waywardness situation. Seems like the timing would be about right for rats to jump from the Auburn bandwagon now if they thought there was going to be post-full-investigation backlash for paying for winning with that particular national title team.

by SolidNole on Dec 15, 2011 4:07 AM EST up reply actions

The NCAA closed the Auburn/Newton investigation and said it found no violations in October.
