Tuesday was a very good day for Florida State punter Shawn Powell.

Early in the day, he told an FSU reporter that he had just learned he was invited to the East-West Shrine Game in St. Petersburg next month. An all-star bowl for invited draft eligible seniors, the game will give him another chance to impress NFL scouts — if his 2011 season hadn’t already done so. The game will be held at Tropicana Field on Jan. 21.

Late Tuesday night, school officials learned that the NCAA was granting Powell consensus All-America status, after he was listed earlier this preseason on several All-America teams, including the prestigious Walter Camp, the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) and the Associated Press.

Read the rest of the story here.

Also, read more about Powell here: Powell has been dubbed the team's MVP by Jimbo Fisher for creating positive field position

Fisher deserves all the praise.

You should write him an "Im sorry" note

For all the meanie things you said about him earlier in some of the games this year.

You probably hurt his feelings.

I don't know how to feel...

Happy for Shawn for being MVP of the team.

Disappointed that our MVP is the punter.

When your punter is as incredible as our's is..

That’s not a bad thing.

I understand the argument,

and I agree he was a tremendous asset to our team. But a punter ought not be the most valuable player.

I don’t like this train of thought, but it has been the trend recently:

The Heisman trophy is awarded to the MVP of the best team. A punter, to my knowledge, has never been awarded the Heisman trophy. If our team’s MVP was the punter, then it doesn’t say many good things about the rest of the team.

Just disappointed with the (rest of the) team, that’s all.

Alabama

Ask them if they would like to have Shawn Powell or Dustin Hopkins. Actually ask them after September the 9th.

What if we'd had a player on the defense be our MVP?

Only one defensive player has ever won the Heisman. Does that mean there hasn’t been a plethora of defensive talent on the field?

Shawn is an fantastic punter, and a great teammate. The accolades are well deserved. I have no problem at all with him being our MVP. He continually set our defense up with exceptional field position. The only other player would had the same level of singular impact would be Dustin. Add to that Shawn is a senior, I say, MVP all the way.

The Heisman analogy was just an example

I tend to prefer offensive players for MVP, as it seems many do. But that’s a bit off topic.

I’m not questioning his worth to our team. I’m not even saying he shouldn’t be MVP of this year’s team.

All I’m trying to say is that, ideally, we should have an MVP either on defense (see: Troy Polamalu) or offense (see: Aaron Rodgers or Adrian Peterson).

But we didn’t have that type of player this year. Which is sad.

by nbj08 on Dec 21, 2011 10:51 PM EST up reply actions

Cheers to that.

It is sad that we don’t have that impact player on offense/defense.

I still think Shawn had one of those years, where, even if we had another impact player, he may well have been our MVP anyway.

Maybe that's the problem?

We’re spoiled with so much extraordinary defensive talent, that it’s hard to pick on that’s better than the others?

Although, for the record, I think we only had two true “impact” players. (Possibly three). Werner, Jernigan, (and Joyner)

I hear ya

but it beats being 7-5 or 6-6, with no MVP.

The Team MVP should be the entire defense.

I have to admit,

during Powell’s freshman/sophomore year, I feared he would get one blocked every time he punted. Really glad I have no football sense. Congrats to our MVP.

Very good news. Congratulations to Shawn Powell.

He has been awesome this year.

Whoever votes on these AA things is stupid

You know you suck if the Ray Guy award doesn’t name you even a semi-finalist. I mean, I’m watching the La Tech game and their punter is amazing, he won the award.
