Noles News 12.22.11

Big basketball game tonight down in Gainesville. I know NorCal Nole will have the preview up. Let's see if the 'Noles can pull it out.

Also, I've heard the Greg Hudson to Auburn rumor, but not from a credible source. I think it is completely bogus and would be beyond shocked if that happened.

Really? Only UF? I mean, I understand why UF, but there is just so much to hate about Tennessee, Georgia, Auburn, and Alabama.

The only above-average team that has never bothered me is LSU. Don’t know why, but just never had an issue with anything LSU.

Basically, it’s this play:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zo5x1TPp2VU&feature=related

Now, nobody is debating on whether or not he fumbled it (he did) but whether or not Brantley regained control of the ball on the ground.

Best angles are at the 1:20 mark, the 1:34 mark, and from 1:40 on. You can clearly see, that he is using his right arm (and chest) to cover up the ball. ’Bama fans however, would tell you he is never on top of the ball, nor is his arm even near the play and that the ball is rolling around the entire time.

But it’s pretty simple. Recovered fumble or not? I say yes, easy.

Also from the link about Terry Bowden:

I had to go back and read this part twice:

“Bowden, who was one of the most charismatic coaches in college football at Auburn, may be helped in attracting recruits to Akron by his legendary father, Bobby Bowden. His brother Jeff is a top assistant at North Alabama and could come with him to Akron.”

That is so absurd it made me laugh out loud.

by JNole on Dec 22, 2011 12:28 PM EST reply actions

Jeff Bowden’s career is pretty amazing – that’s amazing in a bad way. Walked on at FSU – where his dad coached. 27 year coaching career and all but three of those years he’s had either one of his brothers or his father as his boss. How does he not even try to leave the nest?

That aside, I think this is a pretty good hire for Akron. Whatever is to be said about Terry Bowden, the fact is he’s won at every stop in his career and he has proven experience as a head coach. He should energize a pretty demoralized fanbase in Akron and, at a minimum, he’ll guarantee more media coverage for Akron than they likely ever received under Rob Ianello or JD Brookhart.

Unreal

This idea of missing practice. I had been away from the game for awhile as a player when I started helping coach high school a few years back. And I was shocked to see kids just not come to practice. Then, I was amazed, candidly, when they ran a little bit and were still on the team and played on Friday nights.

That didn’t happen when and where I grew up. And it damn sure didn’t happen when I was in college. Our Monday practice was always at night, so that players could schdule their labs that afternoon. It’s when you HAD to have them.

I’ve read snippets where players at UF were missing practice this year and it pissed Muschamp off, to the point he made some comments about it and the former coaching staff.

Sometimes you have to be willing to lose some games to win bigger, later down the road. And letting players hold you hostage just doesn’t make a lot of sense to me.

They’re too scared to play anyone. In 2001 (for the 2002 schedule and beyond), when the SEC ruled that two permanent rivals were too much, they were given a choice to play either Florida or Georgia as their permanent SEC East rival. They chose Georgia, and we in turn, remained with LSU.

Auburn, without question, has the worst inferiority complex of any FBS school.

They seem to be pretty shady in everything they do. I’m sure a lot of it was Bammer propaganda being funneled out into the open, but when Cam’$ pay for play drama was being hung out in the open, there was a lot of info being leaked about a blatant booster payments for years.

There are a lot of reasons to call them the War Chickens BUT choosing UGa over UF isn’t one of them. That’s the oldest football rivalry in the south, at least, according to the parties involved. That one was a no-brainer, wasn’t it?

It's what we learn after we know it all that counts. John Wooden

by Sobering on Dec 22, 2011 1:25 PM EST up reply actions

They first played in the early 1890’s, but have only been annual opponents since WWII.

Auburn and UF had been annual opponents since 1912. Though we did have a 10 year break in the 20’s.

I mean, don’t get me wrong, if I was Auburn, I’d have picked Georgia as well, but it doesn’t mean I can’t talk smack about it either. Much like the choice we made between continuing the FSU or Miami series. We chose FSU, and everybody slams us. So I feel like I can do the same in that regard.

by FlaGators on Dec 22, 2011 1:32 PM EST up reply actions

Fair enough

Seems to me, you got the chance to either play the only big time school in one state OR little brother in another.

You got the chance every other year to go to New Orleans and stay (if so inclined) for the weekend OR you could go stay in Opelika (or if a “Big Spender” you could stay in Columbus).

For us, Auburn sent us a fax and a nice fat check to buy out of the 1999 beat down we were going to put on them. Lucky for us, we got La Tech to replace them. As it turned out, La Tech helped our strength of schedule that year, as they would go on to beat the SEC Champions from the state of Alabama, the Crimson Tide.

The timing of dropping Miami is one of the reasons you get slammed, seems to me. When you add to it, that UF forced Miami to play in Gainesville in 82 and 83 and then at the neutral site of Tampa for the 84 and yet, still dropped them…..well..you can see how that looks.

You know what they say. “All dirt roads lead to Auburn.”

That game in Tampa was also the first ever live on TV ESPN college football game. But yeah, it probably was bad timing, but we had to choose. Personally, I feel like the correct decision was made. Granted, I was born in 1984, so I don’t know another way, but I like playing y’all. I’d be so pissed if we couldn’t anymore.

But our rivalry with Miami is always a win for us, no matter what, because of the Florida Flop in 1971.

I now see the air raid as the football equivalent of those late night no-money-down real estate scams. Despite the promises of endless winning, the actual methods are inherently suspect and far more programs end up ruined than reaching the promised land because of it.

I’m at the point where I’m more receptive to even the triple option than ever trying the air raid again.

Hard to believe

given what we saw from him this year. At no point in his four year career have I looked at Zebrie and thought he was a 1st round pick. The guy has above average skill set for an OL but has never really put it all together. Me thinks after teams put the tape on from this year and really break him down he ends up a 2nd or 3rd pick based mostly off physical ability.

Big size and got several bad calls this year

I’m interested in seeing him at the combine.

Where have you been all year?

And is it difficult to use a computer without being able to see?

Hilarious!!

Almost as funny as your game against Clemson.

I don't like his kick slide

I don’t see it, personally, not a first rounder.

I hope I’m wrong, for his sake and FSU’s too, for that matter.

He’s played a lot of football for us though and I’m very thankful for his efforts for those four years and helping us go 4-0 against UF and Miami the last two years! That will win you a lot of brownie points at my house.

Interesting

You see, I think the poor kick slide helps contribute to him moving early, trying to get the jump on defenders.

I'm skeptical of McShay's evaluations.

Give me Wes Bunting any day.
