2012 Recruiting Discussion Thread #34 [CLOSED]

Welcome to the recruiting discussion thread. Please refer to the Recruiting Board for information on prospects. We are asking readers comment here instead of the recruiting board so that the recruiting board will load quicker. Feel free to talk recruiting news, rumor, information, etc. Amateurs and experts are all welcome. No question is too simple. Have a projected class? That's fine as well.

Once this thread fills up, we will start a new one.

If you post information from another site, please indicate from where you read it.

Specific Player Questions (Check here before asking)

  • Mario Edwards Jr.- His recruitment has been heating up ever since Texas had him official visit for the Red River Rivalry (Texas-Oklahoma). Since the RRR, an ESPN article had reported that he's decommitted. Since then, Mario has denied those rumors of decommitment. However, he has said that Oklahoma is in fact in first place despite his verbal commitment to Florida State. Florida State needs to get back on track to uphold his commitment. A National Championship contender (Oklahoma) will be a hard fought battle for someone like Mario. 11/07/11 update: Michael@TN reported that Edwards commitment to Florida State is again solid after the Unofficial Visit during the NC State 34-0 blowout. Edwards Jr will Official Visit Florida State some time in January(no date has been set at the moment).
  • Dante Fowler- His recruitment has been very interesting. He's grown up a Florida State fan, but still has ties to Florida. He's taken multiple visit to Florida, including this summer when he was rumored to be leaning toward Florida. He also took in the beating Florida received from Alabama in early October. He's remained a Florida State commitment, but is scheduled to take official visits to University of Southern California, as well as Louisiana State. He has been quoted as being concerned about Florida State's recent skid. His recruitment should be something interesting to watch.
  • Dorial Green-Beckham- FSU is not in the race for this receiver from Missouri. His brother is very sick and he wants to stay closer to Arkansas. That means Oklahoma, Missouri, Arkansas, etc. Not FSU.
  • Andrus Peat- One of the more intriguing players in this class. Although at first glance you question why a kid from Arizona with a brother at Nebraska would go to FSU, there is some interest here. Peat's grandparents surprisingly live in Tallahassee. FSU still isn't the favorite to get Peat, that's probably Nebraska, but it's not impossible for Peat to be a Nole come signing day. And there is no question that FSU would take him if he wants in.

Official Visits

1/13/2011

WR Courtney Gardner- As we first reported back in early December here

LB Josh Harvey Clemons

OT Menelik Watson- Juco OT who has been playing football for only a year. One of the best athletes you will find on the offensive line, but is just learning the game.

DE Mario Edwards

QB Sean Maguire

Note: Dr Krop Athlete Johnnie Durante and CB Colin Blake are working on setting up official visits. More info on Blake here

Which recruits are thought to be at risk to qualify academically?

Any word on Pender?

There is a lot of talk down here in SWFL that the Noles are taking their offer off the board. I have heard this from parents of some Island Coast players as well as a few area HS coaches I am friends with.

Character issues....

is what is being said. Same reason he got dropped from the U.S. Army game. I don’t know for sure, that’s why I was asking. I told people that I haven’t heard anything and wanted to know if anybody else has. He is supposed to be enrolled next month so I guess we will find out soon enough.

Ive heard the charges against Pender are going to be or already dropped.

I HIGHLY doubt we pull his offer. Don’t see it happening.

by jenolesone on Dec 30, 2011 3:06 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Pender has been as solid as any Nole he is a top 3 Rb recruit

I highly doubt his offer gets pulled unless he does something again. I have never heard any danger of him flipping, and as long as he doesn’t get in trouble he will be a Nole. Maybe in the game of phone from one person to another it has been said he could lose it if he gets in trouble. If they were going to over current issues they would do it already and be looking elsewhere

I agree

I have to think that CJF knows the situation better than anyone. I also believe that if CJF thought that Pender would be a risk then we would have cut ties and moved on long ago. Delmarco will be fine and Jimbo is very good at communicating what is and isn’t acceptable. That’s not to say that payers won’t get into trouble but there is no misunderstanding Jimbo when it comes to behavior.

If you're that desperate

Put a dress on and we will send over to your house when he gets angry. That way he gets to smack arround someone who sounds like he needs it…

I personally hope it was a one time event and the coaches tell him he is on a zero tolerance scholarship. This is the second chance.

You don't even know what happened

Only the two in the car do. If the charges get dropped he comes to FSU with a clean slate same as anyone else.

Doesn't Matter

I’m not judging him. If a kid got arrested becuase they found drugs in a car he was riding in and he didn’t know they were there. You would still tell him the exact same thing as if they were his. He can’t put himself in those situations.

Pretty much every time cops show up at a call they are going to arrest somebody. DP’s charges will probably get dropped.

But, FSU is "very" confident in Peat and Goodman

by Noleviedo on Dec 31, 2011 1:59 PM EST up reply actions

Don't know about Howard anymore..

He had an Interview online today where he spoke about his top schools UF & LSU are his top two FSU is third he seems to have a very good relationship with Coach Robinson of Florida & said he liked the Town as well. He said he’s not so sure about Tallahassee because the environment is similar to Miami and thats what he’s trying to get away from… Any chance with him?

by Kenow92 on Jan 2, 2012 11:42 PM EST up reply actions

Peat for sure. Definately need another Tackle in this class.

I would agree Howard is a big need as well. I think Goldman is a need as well simply due to the fact our DL is playing so well they’ll get a lot of looks from NFL scouts meaning we could have quite a few 3 and dones.

UA Combine starts tomorrow for Junior Athletes. It should be one of the best Combines to date, with over 20 States represented.

I texted with Dalvon before he left for Dallas and should have a write up on him when he gets back in Florida on how the O-D game went.

BTW for those that didn’t see my post in the last thread the O-D game will be replayed on Comcast Sports, Jan 4th

Mike Davis

I actually am starting to think we can get him. He and Markuss Eligwe seem close and talk a lot on twitter. He and Pender would be great together, I am starting to make myself realize we were never going to get Barry Sanders Jr.

Mike Davis to USCe

I am hearing that Mike Davis will sign with USCe, probably due to the Lattimore injury. My source is close to Scout and ESPN recruiting analysts. I am not a journalist so please understand that I do not spend alot of time vetting my sources. I spent a good amount of time talking with this source during the Champs Bowl, he had a ton of info that I will try to fit into the appropriate discussions.

by Noleviedo on Dec 30, 2011 8:41 PM EST up reply actions

Mike Davis has already made up his mind for those that don’t know. Surprising since he hasn’t taken his offiicial visit to USCe and I don’t think he visited there during the year.

Question about Howard / Stoops

I heard a disturbing rumor that despite the pay raise Stoops received from FSU that the saga with Auburn is not over and that Stoops will be taking the Auburn job soon. Is this affecting the recruitment of Howard?? Or, more to the point, is there any legitimacy to this rumor??

by Noleviedo on Dec 31, 2011 1:25 PM EST up reply actions

Pretty sure Stoops knows he has a HC job somewhere after next season

he has an amazing class coming in and a ton of returning talent from a top 5 defense. A shot at a title and really big things. If he was going I see it setting him back long term. After next season hes set no matter what.

As far as how people are comitting to USCe and they are suddenly getting some amazing talent, #1 kid for a couple seson, lattimore, Clowney, ect. We know the answer

I agree with you on Stoops

Like I said, it was just something I overheard and I am definitely not laying any $$ on it. I agree that Stoops will get a very good job after next year (probably Tennessee) and will demand a high price tag after he has completed the transformation of the FSU defense.

Not sure I totally agree with your assessment of U$Ce. I do not think that Davis is the elite player that ML or JC are. I think it’s more of an opportunity for him to come in and compete right away because of the unknowns associated with ML’s injury. Not that the "bag man" is out of the realm of possibilities, I just don’t see SOS doing business that way. The guy has remained pretty clean over the course of his career.

An SEC school. #1 kids in the country.

And not for 1 year but a couple strait. And they pick USCe over an LSU, an Alabama, UF, even an Ark or Georgia. Thats pretty impressive for maybe the #5 ish general football program in the SEC alone.

of course i say it with a half joke. But its gotta be one of the most impresive things I have seen in a long time to get them to choose that school over the others if they just want SEC ball.

Howard is going to UF, and Poole will flip to FSU..

My guess based on what I have heard in talking with college recruiters (as of thursday at the bowl game)
Also they mentioned, Diggs and Bush to Auburn. Nelson to UF, Goldman was a 50/50 battle between FSU/BAMA (highest bidder).

by FSuni on Jan 1, 2012 12:27 AM EST up reply actions

I was told to still watch for UT for Davis

This same person was highly skeptical of Davis ever signing with the UF at the time he committed to them and said to watch for UT and CU in the end. FWIW the same source told me the saturday night before last year’s NSD that CU people were “very confident” in landing Steward.

by westcoastnolefan on Dec 31, 2011 11:22 AM EST up reply actions

Haven't heard UT

From what I’m hearing Mike Davis is a heavy lean to USCe at this point in time and neither Clemson nor FSU are interested in him. I do not understand the lack of interest from Clemson but FSU is growing more confident everyday that they can land BSjr. I know people feel strongly about BSjr for one reason or another but it may be a factor in regards to our interest in Mike Davis.

I would say that UGA is a distant 2nd place in the Mike Davis sweepstakes at this moment

by Noleviedo on Dec 31, 2011 1:32 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah

most people are in the USCe camp as far as identifying a leader for Davis. CU not being interested is alarming due to the situation playing out with Mike Bellamy that may not be resolved as of yet

by najabaas on Dec 30, 2011 6:48 PM EST up reply actions

Reading quotes from Jameis and his father he seems dead set on playing both sports.

With that said, I don’t see how he would wanna go to Bama and play baseball. People continue to look at his recruitment like any other QB and from just the football aspect and really don’t take into consideration his love for baseball. He’s not the average recruit fellas…

by jenolesone on Dec 30, 2011 8:23 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

What position does Jameis play in baseball??

IIRC Jameis is a pitcher with good heat and a breaking ball. I also understand that he projects as an outfielder in the MLB draft due to his athleticsm and his bat. The addition of Mike Bell to the FSU staff is HUGE in the recruitment of JW. Bell is a beast when it comes to developing talent. I believe he produced 4 first round draft picks in his time at OU (all pitchers)

by Noleviedo on Dec 30, 2011 8:50 PM EST up reply actions

position

doesn’t he pitch for his HS??

by Noleviedo on Dec 30, 2011 8:56 PM EST up reply actions

agreed

but when I said good heat, I did not mean good highschool heat. I should have been more clear. JW’s fastball I’m told is in the 90’s. I’m also under the understanding that JW wants to pitch (post HS). I have seen that he projects as a centerfielder if drafted but I cant help but think that if JW has any aspirations as a pitcher then MIke Bell can definitely help with that.

I coached hs baseball for a couple of years when I was in college and I agree that if a guy can throw over 80, he’d probably see some time on the mound but for the purpose of this thread (since we are talking about soon to be college athletes) good heat would mean >89.

Thanks for the clarification though

by Noleviedo on Dec 30, 2011 11:18 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah JW throws like low-mid 90's

was not intending to argue, just tried to answer the question about his next level position. He will be drafted as an outfielder, but will be given a chance to pitch in college.

by FSuni on Dec 31, 2011 12:41 PM EST up reply actions

Cool

I gotta believe that Mike Bell is the “x-factor” in the recruitment of JW.

I would also appreciate it if Michael or Bud could possibly weigh in on this topic. I think we may be onto something here FSuni!!!

Ive heard Jameis is in the 92-93 range

good life on the fastball, good curveball, but more raw than anything else. Outfield should be his position but it would not surprise me to see him play both ways here. Kid has the arm to play right, the wheels to play center so he’s a great fit at either spot really. Good swing, needs work though. Lotta lift from the left side, should hit a ton of doubles and bombs at the Dick with the wall in right. Very excited to see him play both sports

by Cody@TN on Jan 3, 2012 2:32 PM EST up reply actions

I'll add a prediction for tomorrow UA Combine since I blabbed on for so long

Top 40 times. Last time I heard Lincoln WR Reggie Davis and Miami commit WR Kermit Whitfield were both going to participate. If true, I have these two as my picks for the top 40 times. I’ll post results tomorrow

I’ll add that I think Texas prospect WR Quan Jones who I have worked out with before will time in around 4.55-4.65 electronic 40 at 6’4. He will have a all around great combine imo.

Depth

I would say its a smart move if they think this guy can be better than lovelady and Barron and they lose out on some of the big names we are chasing at guard and tackle. Injuries aren’t fair and even if we only have 2 ol injuries all of next year it can be to the same position. Let’s stop moving guards to the center position when that happens. The kid would be able to redshirt and learn the position slowly.

I was wondering what you thought was your worse prediction was for 2011?

Recruits-
I thought Virginia WR/TE Romond Deloatch was going to have a big year. While he attended FSU Junior Day nothing ever came of it. Some say he has grade issues. Same goes for WR Cameron Broadnax(Jameis Winston teammate).. While Broadnax had a great year on the field he hasn’t turned it into offers. Last time I talked to him he said his grades were fine but why does a guy who is a legit 6’3 200lbs 4.5 40 ish WR have barely any offers?

FSU player prediction- I thougtht DT Demonte McAlister would have a breakout year. Kid is just extremely talented.

Recruit Prediction- I thought Chad Kelly was going to be a Nole when we were recruiting him early when I talked to him. I’m happy he is not(Winston)

Some of the ones of the top of my head.

by Michael@TN on Dec 31, 2011 10:51 PM EST up reply actions

Kelly wasn’t a bad prediction. HE just had to understand if we could get Winston we could, so we were going to take him & another QB in this cycle. Happens.

This is because we are missing out on a number of top OL prospects. We are now reverting to JUCO. JUCO is a way of filling a gap, but not solving the problem.

Just not a lot of options at this point

We do need to take at least three offensive linemen for depth purposes. Would be nice to land some highly regarded prospects of course. But FSU just doesn’t have sufficent depth at this point

by westcoastnolefan on Dec 31, 2011 11:05 AM EST up reply actions

Not sure if this is the right place, but

Since y’all are on the OL topic. Can anyone sum up the non-freshman oline that did not play in the bowl game and if we shld expect any contribution next year? (key reserve, backup,
etc.)
Datko – cant stay healthy, severe shoulder issues. He’s done.
Snider?
Oreleus?
Stork?
Krug – servicable backup?
Others that i missed?

Reason i ask bc what i saw later in the bowl game from the frosh shows alot of promise and if what we currently have in house can come in as backups i dont see our ol recruiting being so dire. I see we need a few more prospects but dont we have projected starters and backups already in house (minus one KEY left tackle)?

all recruiting rankings are driven by quantity

FSU is taking a small class this cycle. Check out avg player ranking (and keep in mind that FSU has a 2* punter and 3* kicker)

OL Recruiting Question

Michael@TN, do you think it is both wise and smart to take “filler” commits on OL this year or load up again next year? This seems to be a double edged sword. We need the depth but that hurts us for future elite OL talent plus even if they provide depth what good is that if they can’t perform at a FSU type level. This OL recruiting dilemma has me beside myself?!? I just can’t understand how this staf got into this position. I’m wll aware of the bad luck and attrition we have had, but that doesn’t excuse not going out and getting 2 or 3 elite talents (non-Juco) for the OL this cycle. If Jimbo wants to build an elite program and not just a good team, he needs to put the same emphasis on recruiting elite talent and numbers on the OL the way he has on the DL. Just very confusing and disheartnening.

by SarasotaSeminole on Dec 31, 2011 12:15 PM EST reply actions

Not Michael

“filler” is ambiguous but definitely has a negative sense associated with it. I will say, however, IMO OL is the one position where in general (of course there are exceptions) development matters a lot. So, if you start with someone with the right measurables w/o much OL skill, you can produce a good OL given enough time/development.

Championship!

by TLHWG on Dec 31, 2011 1:36 PM EST up reply actions

Totally agree

I would even say that the O-line is the hardest position for a freshman to play, even harder than QB. There is so much to learn in terms of assignments that freshmen typically are unprepared. Add in the "physical" aspects of the trenches and you have one real tall order for a freshman lineman.

by Noleviedo on Dec 31, 2011 1:44 PM EST up reply actions

..OL will continue to be FSU's downfall....

…FSU will NEVER and I mean NEVER be elite team again…till he recruits elite OLine…..simple as pie..!!

by George Youngs Jr on Dec 31, 2011 12:35 PM EST reply actions

Disagree

some of the best OLs in the country (e.g., Wisconsin) are composed of 3*s with one or two 4* or 5* players.

Championship!

by TLHWG on Dec 31, 2011 1:37 PM EST up reply actions

Against ND..

Zebrie (4*)
Matias (4*)
Barron (2*)
Jackson (3*)
Hart (4*)
And it’s safe to say Jackson and Barron were under-rated coming out of high school. Jackson’s already a monster in stature and Barron is starting, automatically better than a 2* IMO.

by Noleviedo on Dec 31, 2011 2:54 PM EST up reply actions

Think Trick bought himself some time

with how these guys played in the second half. I think it’s basically the same lineup next year. Glauser fills in for Zebrie and maybe Stork gets back in the starting lineup. Was he out for injury or sucktitude?

"Nothing like a tight one." -Heather Cox

by FTSNole on Dec 31, 2011 2:58 PM EST up reply actions

Injury

IIRC Stork suffered an injury to his hand that ended up getting infected and was very close to an amputation. Can anyone confirm this???

by Noleviedo on Dec 31, 2011 3:06 PM EST up reply actions

Holy crap.

Well, if that’s true and if he heals up I think he’ll start at C over Barron. I’m just happy that something good happened with the OL for a change.
And for anyone who knows, what’s with Avery Young (4* OT from Fla). Are we going after him?

I like your enthusiasm

I have been told that RT is recruiting like a man trying to save his job.

On the other hand, I think RT did a good job preparing our line for the Champs Bowl. We weren’t spectacular, but I think we did "enough" on the line to get the job done. I have been very critical of RT, you can read some of my past comments, and I was "blasted" for my stance.

To his credit, we did have a good class last year plus RT is a guy that CJF loves and trusts. There is a lot of loyalty between those 2 so I think RT’s job is safe. I am not a fan of how we have recruited the O-line prior to 2011 and I don’t think the staff is happy with it either but I don’t think it will cost RT his job.

As a side note, I would look for a little turnover in the roster as I am hearing that Foose will not be back either.

Scout explained last year about "soft commitments"

They basically put that status on a recruit if he visits other schools after committing publicly. It’s doesn’t mean they will de-commit. The same thing happened, for instance, with Rashad Greene last year. He visited Miami in January, and his status was listed as “soft commit” even though he was quite solid. Same with Karlos Williams when he visited USC. JW just visited ’bama I think, so he is listed as a soft commit.

He is just a freak

http://espn.go.com/college-sports/football/recruiting/player/combine/_/id/133948/derrick-green

Top underclassman

Derrick Green, RB (Richmond, Va./Hermitage)
Green wasn’t just the top underclassman at the combine but the top overall player, regardless of class. He finished with the top SPARQ Rating in the event at 111.54 and is already being mentioned as one of the top running backs in the 2013 national class. Green rushed for over 700 yards and 10 touchdowns last season and should double those numbers as a junior.

by Michael@TN on Jan 2, 2012 11:29 AM EST up reply actions

He is a freak athletically

But i can still tell you I have never seen him run where it looked like he was 4.3 fast. He is a really good back still but I would be surprised if he doubled those numbers because he is as big as the linemen blocking for him which doesn’t help him

I watched his highlight video, and he didn't seem anywhere near as fast as D.Pender.

If Green runs a 4.31, then DP must run something like a 4.15; but if Green looks like that, it might not matter how fast he can run, because people my just run away from him. That is one mean looking dude.

When ahead never let up. When behind never give up.

by Chief Pit Bull on Jan 2, 2012 10:27 PM EST up reply actions

im no expert by any means

but from watching his highlights I felt like there was a major discrepancy in his quicks on some plays versus the majority. I wonder if he
A).lost some bad weight partly through the year
2).had some minor injuries
D). just developed significantly as the year went on leading to better times than his film mostly shows
It’s all just a thought, was curious if anyone would know more about that. (for example he seemed slow and lumbering at 1:10 (and most of the film for a 4.3 guy), but at 2:08-2:40 and 4:04 seemed to be much much quicker).

Some teams don't do senior highlights of player who are already committed

Most coaches publish these videos for there prospects to get offered, which Pender doesn’t need. So it’s probably up to a outside sourse like Elite Scouting Service to publish his highlights. Just like how FSU DT Derrick Mitchell Senior Highlights were never made for the public same case might go for Pender. Seriously trying to come up with a mock class and I'm just not confident on who we sign

I know you don’t want to hear this, but I don’t see FSU closing as strong as some people are expecting. If you ask any FSU recruting analyst to give you a mock of the last 4-5 guys FSU signs i think you would be hard pressed to find anyone that is really confident of who finishes out this class.
Note: I’m not real confident in these predictions, but what the hell.

DT Eddie Goldman 55% and trending down. While most analyst think Alabama is the top competition, I’m worried about Auburn

CB Tracy Howard 25% Interview today with Mike Ferrell sounded like Howard is favoring LSU and Florida. Plus his mom unfollowed me which is the ultimate sign lol. Good chance he commits to Florida on his last visit.

LB Josh Harvey Clemons 15% I never had him in this class. FSU does get the last visit though.

WR Courtney Gardner 40% and trending upwards- As I said Courtney deleted his twitter just recenlty(has over a 1,000 Arkansas fans following him). If Courtney were to decommit he would be hounded by Arkansas fans, as they are some of the worst I have seen on twitter. I will catch up with Gardner later. Visits FSU 1/13

DE Leonard Williams 70% if Mario Edwards decommits which I don’t see happening. Williams will visit FSU coming up.

WR Nelson Agholor 5%

OT Andrus Peat 5% until he actually visits FSU. If he does visit I will go up to 30%.

CB A.J. Leggett. 55% most likely a sign and place unless he chooses Marshall

CB Colin Blake- 35-40% If he makes it to campus in Jan.(working on OV)

OG Joseph Scelfo 70% if he makes it on campus otherwise 10%

OT Menelik Watson- 60% Auburn is the main competition here.

I expect two OL to pop up and I’m not sure at this time who.

Do you think there is a chance we offer Lavatiae Kelly?

by Nole300 on Jan 1, 2012 10:56 PM EST up reply actions

I'm a HUGE Lavatiae Kelly fan

WR Lavatiae Kelly was actually claiming a FSU offer at the Miami Dade All Star game. While the offer might not be commitable the coaching staff is on him. Question is does FSU need another WR? I would offer him if it was up to me. Are grades a issue here? I’m hearing that they might be.

Background: Kelly led all of Florida in wide receiving yardage. He stands 6’1 170ish lbs. This is his first year playing football, so that’s why most don’t know about him. Legit 4.4 kid. Dominated this spring. Legit BCS kid. I like him better then LSU WR commit Avery Johnson(remember this is Kelly 1st year playing football which is insane)

Yep in Broward

He didn’t run track
He tore up some of the best teams in Florida HS

Saint Thomas Aquinas REC 8 Yards 120 Long 36 1 TD
Plantation HS with FSU CB commit Sojourn Shelton REC 9 Yards 152 Long 82 2 TD
Flanagan who has a good DB REC 13 Yards 149 Long 24 1 TD

He dominated against everybody he faced for the most part.

Sign me up for Kelly now

Best WR I’ve seen in Fla except for C. Black. I like him better than Cooper and Johnson

by GeorgiaNole on Jan 2, 2012 12:12 AM EST up reply actions

As I said earlier I thought Kelly had grade issues

McArthur (Hollywood, Fla.) WR Levitae Kelly enjoyed a great senior season, posting 60 grabs for 1,318 yards and 15 touchdowns. Kelly didn’t play organized high school ball until spring practice his junior year after sitting out due to grades. He has a lot of ability and raw talent. If he gets in the right program he could blossom into a solid contributor at the next level. The All-Broward first-teamer is starting to hear from FAU and FIU. He has interest in Florida State and Miami.

If his grades are in order he is FSU caliber all the way imo

by Michael@TN on Jan 2, 2012 12:45 AM EST up reply actions

Any word on Ricardo Louis?

I heard something about us going after him pretty hard, but I don’t remember where I heard it. Any chance he jumps from Auburn?
Also, would we be looking at him at WR? It seemed like he was playing mostly RB in the highlight video I saw of him. He reminded me physically of Anquan Boldin.

Thoughts on Robert Conyers?

by GeorgiaNole on Jan 2, 2012 12:13 AM EST up reply actions

I hear he might be going to Ole Miss due to his relationship OL Coach Matt Luke

I know some sites have mentioned Conyers as a possible late add, but I don’t see it. I believe he has used all of his OV and Ole Miss is his last one on 1/27. I like him at RT, but I feel there are better options that are not committed in the state of Florida.

I’ll come up with a OL list tomorrow. Again it’s very hard to project which one of these guys FSU will target since they haven’t shown a lot of attention besides top prospects like Peat etc.

Personallly I like Justin Shanks better then Goldman

Timmy Jernigan was physcially ready to come in because he was in great shape(power lifting champion). Shanks is the same way he is in great shape at 295-300lbs and lives in the weight room. Physically Shanks is like a taller NLS who plays against better high school competition then NLS which will get him ready to maybe play his freshman year.

Michael...

I like that thought process. I think there is a lot of validity there

by FSU on Jan 2, 2012 5:10 PM EST up reply actions

Shanks put on a lot of weight before this past season

and I think it compromised his lateral movement based on his senior film.Doesn’t have either the length or the burst of Goldman therefore not the same caliber pass rusher. Not as good an athlete as NLS either. Goldman is big and strong enough to play Nose guard and has the length and quickness to play the 3 tech under tackle position while Shanks would probably be limited to playing the nose unless it’s a short yardage situation. Goldman is just a much better more versatile prospect

by westcoastnolefan on Jan 2, 2012 10:05 PM EST up reply actions

I agree with Shanks = 1Tech/Goldman = 1 *or* 3Tech

Need to watch more film though.

Sign and place definition:
A coach will sign players he knows have no chance of qualifying academically and then place those players in junior colleges. In return, the junior college coaches will feed the best of their players back to the FBS programs when those players are ready to transfer.

From: Oversigning offenders won’t be curbed by NCAA’s toothless rule

It’s a win/win for both the Junior College and the FBS team. The junior college will be funneled a good player and the JUCO coach will generally appreciate it and do his best to make sure the player keeps his commitment once the player gets his grades together or graduates. If multiple players don’t keep their commitment and sign elsewhere, the FBS program will think the JUCO coach isn’t doing all he can to keep the players committed to their original school and find another JUCO to funnel players to.

The sign and placed player does not count towards the FBS schools 85 limit until he actually enrolls one or two years later.

I’m pretty sure the person who said Mario Edwards was 80% to Texas are the same guys who predicted he would originally commit to UT back in the spring. They also believed UT had a over 50% chance of landing Nelson Agholor and Andrus Peat, and how did that turn out(Nelson will commit to USC if he leaves the state of Florida and Peat will probably be at Neb) ? MEJ can play whatever position he wants to once he faxes his LOI--including, but not limited to, SDE, DT, TE, K, cheerleader, and/or moped security.

He’s a specimen like Kevin Carter was, better athleticism at 18 though.

Faster impact at DT because of his quickness and size

I think as a DE that he needs to trim some baby fat and get quicker to play DE. Player his caliber does what he wants though.

How do you figure??
Faster impact at DT because of his quickness and size

SDE – He walks into the 2nd-team spot immediately.

DT – 3 deep in front of him.

Very True DRusso

I meant that more from a talent perspective, not FSU’s depth chart. I agree with you 100% that he would be a bigger asset to FSU as a DE but that wasn’t what I was trying to say.

I think the skill set right now though would create matchup nightmares for guards because of his size and quickness. I think he is will make an impact as a DE as well don’t get me wrong. I just think that as a freshmen he could make a splash as a DT on passing situations.

by aznole85 on Jan 5, 2012 11:14 AM EST up reply actions

He "could" play DT, and perhaps be very good at it (in time), but he can & will make an IMMEDIATE impact at SDE.

He is masterful at stopping the run because of his physical style and natue. I paid special attention to him in last night’s game and he did go up against Peat who was probably the best offensive linemen in that game. Mario didn’t show me enough to warrant that he will be a great pass rusher in his early years at DE. His bull rush is his main move accompanied with his ability to see where the play is going and take amazing angles. And this could all be due to Peat’s play but Mario struggled at times, he took plays off and didn’t even attempt to crash the pocket on the plays he took off.

I would say he is probably as good as a run stopper as Werner right now but I don’t think his pass rushing skills are. I just think he is a little too heavy right now to be maximizing his pass rushing skills. With Elliot’s help and our S&C program he should sharpen up his pass rushing skills and also get his quickness back. One thing I really like about Edwards is that he really enjoys punishing the ball carrier. He definitely has that mean streak in him.

by aznole85 on Jan 6, 2012 2:15 PM EST up reply actions

Edwards ran a 4.75 40 at a TCU camp I was at at the end of the summer of his Junior year.

Granted he weighed 268lbs(now around 290) if I recall correctly, but he is also training with his former NFL CB dad in Mario Edwards Sr every day so I doubt he runs slower then a 4.8 ish 40. Vic will improve on this imo. If former Clemson DE Daquan Bowers can play DE so can Edwards imo.

by Michael@TN on Jan 3, 2012 10:42 PM EST up reply actions

he is a perfect DE for a 3-4 scheme

But like you said if Bowers can do it so can Edwards. I like how nobody has thrown the Reggie White comparison yet.

Is there any possibility of Jimbo and company sitting down with Senior and Junior, asks if he wants to come to FSU and Junior says “no, i want to go to OU or UT.” Then senior and jimbo asks if he wants to commit early to FSU to help them so they can continue with the momentum built from the class of 2011 and get other recruits to hop on board…only to not sign with FSU on NSD…

I'm really not worried about DL recruits.

Were already stacked and we will land at least 2 between Goldman, Casher, MEJ, and Fowler. I’m much more worried about landing Pender who isnt talked about as much but is much more important to our future success as we are thin at RB. I mean we have Freeman as our only natural runner with vision at the HB position and I sure as hell wouldnt bet on him staying healthy for every game next year. We NEED Pender or a Freeman injury would give us Pryor/JWJ backfield which isnt ideal.

Anyone have season statistics on the kickers?

Curious on Aguayo and Beatty’s season statistics. Likely one of them takes over punting duties next season (Beatty long term, though maybe Aguayo for a season while Hopkins continues kicking dominance).

Powell will be missed, just trying to project a dropoff. Another aspect of Powell is he was the holder the last four years, though only film can evaluate that – hard to see the quality of a holder from statistics, as bad numbers could also be the kicker or snapper.

by Wild@Heart Nole on Jan 3, 2012 12:50 PM EST reply actions

From what I remember about Beatty

Hes got the leg to be pretty good at bombing distance punts, but not many will replicate inside 20 any time soon. Wonder how much Gran can do for his technique/control, seeing that Shawn was a beast

by jmnpb996 on Jan 3, 2012 1:09 PM EST up reply actions

yea, remember that as well from video

just wondering what the 2011 stats were. Found Beatty’s hometown paper but they had no stats of use on anything related to special teams.

by Wild@Heart Nole on Jan 3, 2012 1:21 PM EST up reply actions

Shawn's first full year was averaging 41.6 YPP w/ long of 64, 44.3 as a junior with long of 66, 47.6 as a senior with long of 69

It’s safe to say player development with punters has been good since Gran has been here.

I don’t doubt that Beatty will be good for us, but nobody expects him to be Brad Wing his freshman season.

Takes him away from practice time at QB, no?

I thought that was the whole reason that the holder is always the punter who is generally seperately bored/twiddling thumbs at practice.

Any questions for FSU commits LB Markuss Eligwe and DT Justin Shanks as I will be heading to San Antonio tomorrow?

I’ll be covering the Army All American game for all SB Nation sites not just FSU, but I just wanted to see if there is a certain question you guys wanted to know on these two.

by Michael@TN on Jan 3, 2012 2:07 PM EST reply actions

I’d like to know their thoughts on how the in-state folks (GA and AL) have treated them during the process. Do they catch a lot of flack for not going to an in-state school or do people wish them well?

by bobbysura on Jan 3, 2012 2:20 PM EST up reply actions

I saw u had Shanks rated over goldman

I’d be interested to see his reaction on you having him as the best dt in the nation or close to it…

How tight (or not) this group of recruits are

Do they talk regularly, are they all working together on other recruits.

Ask why they chose the Army AA game over the Under Armour game.

by CrimiNole Defense on Jan 3, 2012 8:00 PM EST up reply actions

Do they have a relationship with various FSU coaches and how would they describe it? For example: Hudson, Craig, Coley,Gran, etc…

T.G. WR UA AA Tampa....thoughts on him?

brief rundown?

"I spent 90 percent of my money on women and drink. The rest I wasted!"

by JaviLouis on Jan 3, 2012 5:27 PM EST up reply actions

They basically tell hymn to tell the viewers to reaffirm is commitment....

They say “your commitment to FSU is …..” And he says “…strong” , but I would have liked a ‘solid’ or ‘100%’. He said it with slight hesitation. In addition, he straight up says something along the lines of “When I first went, I was very high on the Noles, and then that feeling died out…thats why Im looking forward to my next visit, to see if I can get that same feeling” Not verbatim, but something like that…

Hence why I say his next visit is crucial. But I have no doubt Jimbo will have everything ready …

They sounds like your typical teenager.

Should be expected with his age.

Man

you make that seem bad the way he said that and it was nothing of the sort, there was no hesitation, he never said the feeling died, it was “since i havent been back in awile, the feeling may have wavered”BUT…….“I truly believe when I go back in January I will get that same feeling again”…man you work for ESPN or something..

Tomahawk Nation- Great FSU football and English lessons!

Hence why I said its not verbatim

Well, More power to you – I hope your right

by LetsGoNoles on Jan 3, 2012 6:32 PM EST up reply actions

Exactly...

I was more worried about what he said about baseball than what he had to say about FSU. He never said the feeling died about FSU, just that it waivered and he has no doubt the “this is it” feeling will be back during/after his OV.

Also, when they were showing that guy with the gator before his interview…anyone catch his comment about “Chop those gators up” with the little smirk on his face? To me, it’s FSU or MLB for him.

by Noles Fan in ND on Jan 3, 2012 8:56 PM EST up reply actions

wow, watching the UA practice on ESPNU right now...

and i feel like its the same thing over and over…. “OK you are watching the OLine vs DLine drills. Wow, look at that burst from Dante Fowler Jr. He is so explosive and is a commit to FSU. Wow, look at that spin move from Chris Casher. A great D-end who is committed to FSU. Wow, look at that grown man, manhandle that OLine. That is Mario Edwards the #1 recruit in the country and he is also a D-end committed to FSU.” (Tom Luginbill). He also doesn’t stop talking about Eddie Goldman. (crossing my fingers!) This could be a sicker D-Line in 3 years than the D-Line next year. These guys are ridiculous. Also, Michael what are the chances that DFjr moves to LB since the D-Line talent is overflowing and the LB depth is a little slim?

by FSU@UNF on Jan 3, 2012 5:52 PM EST reply actions

well isn't fowler like 235 and casher like 260-270?

fowler, IMHO, has the better tools to be an OLB than Casher. But isn’t Casher to big?

by FSU@UNF on Jan 3, 2012 6:30 PM EST up reply actions

Thought Casher was 240

by JaviLouis on Jan 3, 2012 6:44 PM EST up reply actions

Fowler will play the Brandon Jenkins role...

as a DE/LB pass rusher. He said he wants to be used in multiple ways kind of like how Florida uses Powell or we use Brandon. Casher is only being recruited as a DE but he does have the physical tools to play linebacker also and would be interesting to see if we see him in multiple situations as well…

by zone3nole on Jan 3, 2012 7:24 PM EST up reply actions

Seems to me it pains them to talk good about FSU and they stress that every commit we have is verbal and could be looking elsewhere.

by CrimiNole Defense on Jan 3, 2012 6:48 PM EST up reply actions

Fowler ran a electronic 4.65 40 which is faster then Telvin Smith and James Wilder.

So straight line speed he could play the position., I just think in space he would have some trouble. He doesn’t have the hips for coverage in the zone scheme imo. Same goes for Casher who ran a freakish 4.59 electronic 40. While they could play LB, it would be limiting their potentitial imo. Both freaks regardless of positions. NFL type combine #’s

He is right

What happens when Fowler gets stuck on a RB who runs a wheel route and Fowler can’t flip his hips fast enough and trips on his feet. If routes were straight lines Fowler could cover but that ins’t the case.

Watching that video leaves you so impressed with how intelligent and charismatic this guy is. EJ is a charismatic guy, but Jameis is just on another level. Neo is the perfect term.

They will stay at DE because you can never have enough great pass rushers.
