Florida State v. Notre Dame in Champs Sports Bowl

Florida State now knows its bowl destination: The Champs Sports Bowl in Orlando, FL, on December 29th. The Champs Sports Bowl featuring FSU and Notre Dame will kickoff at 5:30 EST and will be televised by ESPN. Who will the Seminoles play inn the Champs Sports Bowl? The Notre Dame Fighting Irish. FSU hasn't played in the Champs Sports Bowl since 2008, and the 'Noles have not faced Notre Dame since 2003, winning 37-0 in South Bend.

Both the 'Noles and Irish had disappointing seasons this year, for a variety of reasons (injuries, turnovers, poor play, coaching etc.). But both teams also played well above their respective 8-4 records. The Seminoles lost their four games by an average of five points, while winning their 7 against division-1 competition by an average of 24. Unlike FSU, Notre Dame was soundly beaten twice (by 14 to USC and by 14 to Stanford), but did lose two games by a combined seven points.

You can follow the hillarious Champs Sports Bowl twitter account @ChampsSportsBwl

Maybe you can help “tame” the Lynch’s before kickoff.

Remember what happened to Lebrons game once he found out West was putting work in on his mother (side note, West is disgusting for tackling that amazon).

If you haven’t noticed, Notre Dame has a reputation for always being overrated (often rightly so). You have to remember, most college football fans aren’t that well informed.

by burkenole on Dec 5, 2011 8:30 AM EST up reply actions

I've considered this

nobody protects their image like the SEC. It would be curious to know what goes on behind closed doors, but they don’t want an ACC team beating 2 of the “good brand” SEC teams back to back for 2 years in a row.

Chick Fil-a: “We’re going to ask Florida State”
SEC: “No don’t do that. They were here last year. Change it up”
Chick Fil-a: “They’re worth an extra 2 million over anybody else we can get”
SEC: “We’ll cover that $$”

Of course, te ACC has a contrac with ESPN too.

Really it's because the City of Tampa did a poor job accomodating fans during the classic

All the malls closed at 5pm the day of the game, many restaurants closed early, and the Downtown/Ybor area was exactly hospitalbe to many of the alumni associations in the area. FAMU and BCC for years complained of how the city fed into racial stereotypes in how they handled the classic instead of realizing how much of a commercial gold mind the game brought.

Disney, however, did know and played a big role in moving it to Orlando.

It used to draw well in Tampa but the profiling at the mall and changing the hours that type of thing made the game not very friendly and people stayed away.

Its owned by Sons of the Confederacy

It is private property, but size and visibility of the flag has always been the consitutional issues. Tampa generally allows SOC to wave the flag, but can regulate when they are allowed to wave it like when the Super Bowl was in Tampa recently and city ordered them to take it down.

The biggest advantage teams that run an Option Style Offense have is, it is something other teams do not see very often.

If you have to play a team that runs the option on a shot week, it is quite often a recipe for disaster. The extra time you get to prepare for a bowl game can really help mitigate their advantage. Since stopping the option is mostly about knowing, and taking care of your assignments, the extra time to prepare for it is very helpful.
That extra time can really help a team be more prepared for an offense, that it would usually be the least prepared for.
I don’t know if that is why GATech has done poorly in bowl games, but I suspect it is at least part of the story. Let them play those same teams with only 7 days to prepare for them, and the results would probably be quite different.
That said, give all the teams that GATech plays during the year a bye week right before they play them, and the results from those games would probably be quite different also.

When ahead never let up.When behind never give up.

Clemson over WV
Michigan over VT
Auburn over Virginia (we’d have won)

NC State over Louisville
Ga Tech over Utah

Same for UF and the Gator? The only realistic alternative for the SEC is UGA and UGA already played in Jacksonville this year and it’s not nearly as enticing of a matchup as OSU vs. UF.

The ONLY other ACC school that could’ve filled the Champs in a matchup with Notre Dame is maybe Miami. And, well, they got Shapiro’ed.

But can you name me better matchups and fanbases? You’re likely to get more ND fans buying hotels against an FSU than any of the ACC alternatives. I already said why UGA to Jacksonville wasn’t a good idea. They’re still going to Tampa which is a good location for them.

What would’ve been the better matchups, people?

That in itself wouldn’t stop the Chick -Fil-A Bowl from picking us. Fanbases like UVA get passed up for bowls all the time.

IDK what the reason is…but there has to be a reason why, with everything equal, FSU would not be picked over UVA…what is the over under for UVA fans and TV ratings. If there was a deal made, I hope we do not have to share that extra money. Sucks for us, Atlanta and the GA Dome is exponentially better than the Citrus Bowl and Orlando.
The only ting I can think of, is that they expect Auburn to buy up every extra ticket and sell those hotel rooms, which we all know, that UVA will not, and if your gonna throw a dog a bone, pick GT (at least there is a reasonable explanation)

PERSONAL & FOOTBALL

Personally, it would have given me a great new years eve vacation

Football-wise, I (and most others) think the Peach is a more prestigious bowl against a more prestigious conference (Later date vs the SEC).

"There's always opportunity in everything. I saw him, I laid the wood on him and he went to the sidelines looking for his mouthpiece. That's how that goes."

by Kellumbear on Dec 4, 2011 11:32 PM EST up reply actions

Again, the prestige part is crap.

It’s not BCS. Notre Dame is more prestigious than Auburn. Would the BBVA Compass Bowl be considered more prestigious than both because it’s played in January? It’s a bowl game that’s not a BCS bowl and neither opponent would’ve been ranked. It’s stupid to cry about it.

I Disagree

First, with the prestige, most people in the evil sports world think that the Peach is a more prestigious bowl. I remember from my youth (70s & 80s), the Peach being a big deal due to the fact of its date around NYE.. The BBVB bowl you mentioned is a bowl that is one of the new ESPN made. Bowls for programming purposes after Jan 1. Those bowls have no prestige in my eyes.
Second, although ND has a long history in this nation, they are an afterthought and they don’t come close to touching the SEC in football over the past two-plus decades. I would rather kick SEC ass today versus old bag ND ass.
Finally, I wonder if we were passed up by everyone except, say the Eagle Bowl, should we just be happy with that bc it’s a bowl?

"There's always opportunity in everything. I saw him, I laid the wood on him and he went to the sidelines looking for his mouthpiece. That's how that goes."

Outside of the BCS bowls and say Cotton, Cap One, and maybe Outback does anyone really know the difference anymore between any of the bowls? At one point the Holiday Bowl meant something now its like the Pacs 5th and Big 12 7th choice. Match ups are what make the rest of the bowls and ND/FSU is one of the better match ups you can get even with both teams down the game will still have people watch it.

Kellumbear, you need to put that SEC Kool Aide aside for a awhile. The truth is, outside of SEC territory, the Champs Bowl will have greater interest and more people will watch it. ND is a bigger name in college football historically than Auburn. I agree with Tricknole and others that past the BCS bowls and one or two others, like the Cotton, most people will not distinguish any differences in the bowls. BUT, they will distinguish a difference in the quality of matchups and FSU-ND, trumps UVA-Auburn. Bottom line is the conference makes out financially and that helps us too. It’s because the Chick-fil-a bowl is a “better” bowl. It chooses before the Champs Sports Bowl so being picked for that bowl tends to mean you’re better than the team picked for Champs Bowl so it’s an ego thing. The fact that UVA got picked over FSU will definitely annoy people.

But I just saw the final BCS rankings: 7-5 Auburn and 7-5 Texas ranked, but not 8-4 FSU. Jeez, UT lost to Baylor alone by more (24 points) than our combined shortfall in all of our losses! WTF…

Overall I think the ACC and FSU end up doing well from the money point this year

While making sure Boise gets screwed out of a ton of Money, and Houston losing basically costing their conference $15 mill.

We were not going to a BCS. So whatever we were overlooked even by Virginia. Pretty much any bowl we were going to was going to pay within a Million or so bucks. And the difference between us facing Auburn who I would have loved to have beat and added another SEC team to the list of us beating. We are still going to have a game that will always be a huge draw. FSu vs ND. We may not have as good a shot. But it will be prob the most watched non BCS game. And with VT sneaking in an at large, even if they dont deserve it. It ends up giving FSU more cash from the ACC having pictures of some people and getting 2 BCS teams in. And that actually bolds well for FSU. Cause it was not expected. Gives the ACC a .00058 % more respect. And a win over ND would be a good finish. And a loss means we are waiting for next year which we are doing anyway in reality.

While at the same time it makes sure Boise and their crying cause all their victories over schools for the disabled didnt sneak them into an At large bid with a loss and pay them a ton more cash for doing nothing. Same with Houston who playing a season against no one was going to get an At large bid that would have brought an additional $15 mill to their conference, if they werent embarrassed before getting to the BCS and showing why they dont deserve it which they dont

So I am happy how it worked. Boise and the we play no one schools shut out while the ACC makes some extra cash for once. Works for me

And Ok St missing the title game by .009 pts. Holy Schnikies. That would have been a really good gae and rather see that over Bama LSU, It better be better then last game.

OK my. late night rant.

Conspiracy theory time

Virginia Tech is an absurd choice for a BCS bowl.

However, back when Pitt and Syracuse got invited, the BC AD slipped up and mentioned that ESPN was giving hints on what Big East teams to take to bump the $$ up the most, and the Big East wasn’t signing on to ESPN’s offer. I think ESPN agreed to push a 2nd ACC BCS team this season if available in exchange for our work in destroying the value of the Big East TV contracts.

Don’t know if its true, doubt it is true but I so want to believe it I don’t care. Jim Delany told the Sugar Bowl that Michigan would not be playing Boise so they had a pick between KState, VaTech and Baylor. Out of those 3 teams its a no brainer who you take if you are trying to sell ticekts and get people to watch.

I can say one thing...

I am buying tickets to the Champs Sports Bowl and I guarantee that FSU’s coaches know whether EJ is having surgery now or after the bowl game. If he does end up missing the bowl game for surgery, I think it’s wrong that the fans don’t know about it prior to buying tickets to the game. I think it’s very misleading and I will be pretty upset. I would feel like I was “used” and duped into buying tickets and paying for something that I won’t get to see…Just my humble opinion…

How many weeks of spring practice before the spring game?

Spring game’s April 14th apparently. If practice is 2-3 weeks than that’d leave a good 2.5 months of recovery time even after the bowl game. And since the QB’s don’t take too many hits in the spring those 2.5 months may be plenty by the time practice starts.

I'm not even sure what type of surgery is needed after a shoulder seperation?

Do they go in and repair torn ligaments? I agree with you in that I would think having surgery after the bowl should be fine as long as he has enough time to build strength back up in it.

"I dont hate people. I just feel better when they aren't around." -Bukowski

by cerebralfish on Dec 6, 2011 10:05 AM EST up reply actions

Well, there are 3 ligaments that are usually torn if the separation is severe enough to "require" surgery.

Looks like one option is to drill through 2 bones (clavicle and coracoid process) and attach the two via a “rope”. This would have the same function as two of the ligaments that were torn and are what keeps the clavicle from noticeably sticking up. I guess there’s also another procedure where they can take a 4th ligament, one that is usually uninjured and detach one end of it. Then reattach that end to the clavicle to hold it in place like the rope (in the other surgery technique) or the 2 ligaments (in a healthy individual). Probably other techniques. As I’ve said, I’m not even sure surgery is necessary. Unless his clavicle is displaced into other tissues (nerves, muscles) in his chest/shoulder. Then you definitely need surgery.

I think LSU is the clearly the better team. I do not think however they beat Bama easily. You can’t discount the pressure and psycological factors at work with 20-21 year old kids having to beat BAMA again. I would be scared as all hell of a letdown if I was Les. by fmnole on Dec 5, 2011 11:49 AM EST up reply actions

It'll be the same.

and they’re going to be hamstrung again by both coaches playing not to lose. Saban knows he doesn’t have a QB to challenge LSU’s defense at all and the Hat will be content to wait for the Honey Badger to make something happen, especially since it did work the first time around. I already saw the spiritual rematch of the first game a couple weeks ago in Gainesville. It’s just that Brantley’s a bigger moron and failure of a QB than either of LSU or Alabama’s.

Maybe we’ll get lucky and someone on either team will fall down and a TD will get scored. Not holding my breath, though.

And remember how this makes ND fans have to remember back even further to remember wining a NC and many fans are not even old enough to remember
