Three Noles To Participate In The NFL Combine
Three Seminoles will get to show their stuff at the NFL combine this week. Christian Ponder, Rodney Hudson, and Markus White all have something to prove in Indianapolis.
Christian Ponder 6'2" 222
Like most proven quarterback commodities, Ponder won't throw at the combine, preferring to toss it around to familiar targets at his pro day. He will, however, likely run the 40-yard dash and do the agility drills. Ponder could really excel there as he once registered the best shuttle score on the team. That should help his stock continue to improve after an excellent Senior Bowl.
What will Ponder measure in at? 6'1" 7/8? 6'2" 1/2? I'll say a hair over 6'2" and about 225 pounds.
Projected Pick: 30-100
Rodney Hudson 6'2" 290
After an impressive Senior Bowl, Hudson will look to do damage control with his physique. Hudson is an excellent player, but doesn't look the part with his shirt off. He should impress in the agility drills and hopes a team picks him to play right guard and not pose for pictures.
What will Hudson measure in at? My guess is 6'2" 295. I want to see how many reps he does on the bench press.
Projected Pick: 30-110
Markus White 6'4" 255
Without an invite to the Senior Bowl, White enters the combine with much to prove. How big is he? How well will he move laterally? He was hampered by a lingering knee injury the last two years and teams will be eager to check him out. If White comes in at a chiseled 260lbs+, he could find himself drafted.
Projected Pick: 180-Undrafted

Surprised K. Smith didn't get a look.
Decent size, good speed and agility. Showed a lot of improvement once he finally got a position coach. Would’ve been interesting to see how he would’ve turned out playing outside lb after a few years of good coaching. I will never understand why CTC decided to put Smith inside and Bradham outside.

it didnt surprise me to see them there, honestly.

I think White would benefit from a year or 2 on somebody's bench, or Practice squad.
If he develops to 265 and cures the knee, he would land a job. Same for K Smith, I could see him as the type of pick the Patriots would chance on…so-so coaching developement, but physically gifted. A couple years in the Pats system and he would have a legit shot. (I hate the Pats, but no denying how successsfully they develop talent) I have my fingers crossed for Ponder to the Dolphins.

I cannot see Kendall in the NFL - he didn't have the instincts of Buster Davis to me
nor his speed for that matter – and nobody ever accused Buster of being fast.
Didn't Ponder measure 6'2'' 1/8 at the Senior Bowl?
which is about a half inch taller that I thought he was judging by the pictures of him standing next to EJ.
In any event – I call his height ’B" height if grading it – if it is anywhere in that area
probably C+
adequate but not really a strength.
If Ponder goes in round 1
We could see another long streak of 1st rounders again :)

It could happen (Ponder going in 1st)
He’s injury prone, but someone will overdraft for him.
Who or what are you glorifying with your life?
Consensus from scouts at the senior bowl was 3rd round, possibly second.
No way he’s a first rounder.

There is some smoke out of Buffalo that Gailey likes Ponder.
1st pick in the 2nd round is likely, depending on whether other teams show interest. Likely, but doubtful.
I would be very surprised if he lasted past Buffalo’s pick in the 3rd round. If the Dolphins or any other team wants Ponder, they will probably have to draft him in the 2nd round, which is higher than the early projections on Ponder.

likely, but doubtful?
that makes a lot of sense, but its unlikely that it made sense to anyone.
just yankin your chain. likely but doubtful makes no sense at all. plausible but doubtful works, though.

I'm highly confused by that.
“Likely, but doubtful”.
WTF?
Anyways, I’m just relaying info. I happened to talk to Jason Garrett at one of the south’s practices and he mentioned something about he is smart enough to play immediately, but needs the “right system to use his talents” or something like that.

Yes, "Likely but doubtful is stupid."
I’m not sure what Jason Garrett is looking for in a QB, maybe Christian doesn’t fit his offense. I would think, though, that Coach Garrett will not spend too high of a draft pick on a QB with Tony Romo on the roster.

Wonderlic
They need to set up a camera in the Wonderlic room, and have the players take the test on a touchscreen where people can watch and follow along.
That would make for great television.

I'd watch
I was reading a website on the test. Apparently average is around 19 or 20 and if you score under 10 you’re illiterate. I believe Vince Young scored a 6? Odds he can read? Who knows… I know Marino BOMBED his test and he turned out alright. Only 1 guy in the NFL currently scored perfect and that is Ramsey out of Harvard and Myron Rolle scored I think a 34, so I see Ponder scoring about 35. (it’s out of 50)
On a side note, can we get rid of the background of the page, Its painful looking at Tebow on the side of the screen looking like he’s about to get a money shot to the chin from Urbie Cryer.

Before this becomes a thing
A couple of good pros bombed the Wonderlic bascially Marino and McNabb but otherwise successful QBs have a score of at least 25 higher does not seem to matter and might be counter productive after about 35 but 25 seems to be the basic score needed to have a good shot at being good.
I think most great QBs scored between 15 and 25.

Suprised that E$PN has not already though of that. They could slot it between
Championship Poker and Women’s Billiards. E-mail Mark Cuban, maybe he can throw some cash at developing the touch screens while he is working on his plot to blow up the BCS.
Stupid decision not to throw.
Ponder is hurting him stock if he doesn’t throw at the combine. He really has nothing to lose there because everyone is considering him 5th or worse among the QB class. The scouts just want to see your footwork and release. They don’t even care if you overthrow or under throw one of the random receivers. That’s not what they’re looking for. Mike Mayock explained it recently on NFL Network.
I find it hard for Mayock to be impartial
when he works for the network that would benefit from having marquee QBs throw at the combine. Just because a bunch of mocks have him ranked 5 or worse in the QB class, doesn’t mean teams feel the same way.
If a team has him number 1 or 2 on their QB board and he stinks it up throwing to unfamiliar receivers, he could definitely hurt his stock.

Disagree
The NFL “experts” say that every year, and every year QBs don’t throw, light it up at their pro day and are overdrafted. If the jury’s out on you, wait and throw to your guys. Whether they’ll admit it or not, scouts and GMs don’t draft QBs because they throw a pretty ball that no one catches

The talking heads are considering him 5th or worse, but many NFL teams have him much higher.
There is nothing he can do at the combine in terms of throwing that he can’t do at his pro day.
'11: Minimum Goal: 9-3 Regular Season. Given FSU's non-con slate, don't care who the 9 are.
'10: 7th in offense, 41st in defense. Division Champions. 10-4. (6-3)
'09: 8th in offense, 88th in defense. 7-6 (4-4)

Doesn't he throw to Seminole receivers at pro day?
I thought Ponder looked much better throwing in the Sr Bowl. Probably because he was throwing to a higher quality of receiver. So why not make yourself look better by throwing to better receivers.
But he did at the SR Bowl (according to some).
I agree with his not throwing at the combine though. Nothing to prove to the people that matter.

Some say 2nd rounder, some say 5th.
There is a lot of money to be made with a great showing in a combine. I don’t think agility drills are going to raise his status. A great throwing day at the combine and pro day would move him up 1 to 2 rounds in my opinion.
Point taken.
I don’t think the scouts and GMs need to see him at the combine though. They’ll see what he can do at his pro day. Also, many of them already have their boards set at this point. There’s more risk than reward at throwing at the combine IMO.

Many of them (not all) already have their boards set at this point.
There will be some front offices that learn something new that causes their boards to change but not many. It does provide a chance to get the players out of their comfort zone and see what they’re like under pressure but the combine is extremely overrated IMO. It all can be accomplished at pro days.

Combine is superior in the folloing ways
A. Don’t have to worry about a rain out, FSU has no indoor practice facility
2. Don’t have to worry about Burt Reed running a bad route, or dropping a pass
D. We are short one receiver, Taiwan is playing baseball

My concern would be
If I’m a GM, I wonder/worry a little bit about guys that won’t go combines. My job is to look for warts, reasons NOT to pick you, rather than, reasons TO pick you.
Maybe I think that way simply because it’s an “occupational hazard?”
I want guys that will go out there, regardless of conditions and show they will compete. If a player will do that for me, I’m probably more willing to give him the benefit of the doubt on other issues.
Then again, I’m still waiting for the Lions to call and offer me the GM job. I can’t do any worse than some others they’ve had.
Interesting point about the quality of receivers
Here’s a counterpoint: He had a week to practice with those receivers for the senior bowl. How much time would he have to practice with combine receivers?
Really fifth round or worst?
He’s too good to slip that far. His arm strength is not the best, but as far as the mental aspect of playing QB he’s the only one in my opinion who is ready to play from Day 1.

Why do I see Tebow on the side of the screen?
Also, I thought Rodney would go sooner, is it his height?
Rodney's height, weight and body type
I saw him play guard as well as anyone at the college level, but he is apparently considered small for the NFL, and he is not chiseled, so maybe they doubt that he can add good weight.
According to CBS sports, “Hudson’s limited frame might mean he’ll be asked to move inside to center.”
And I don't think he would complain
About moving to center. He could play G or C just fine.

I don't think Hudson projects as a guard.
He is significantly too light to play that position immediately in the NFL. Not many starting guards under 310. However, many centers play lighter. Teams that run a zone in the NFL (Indy, Washington) may look at him as a guard with his proven ability to play with lighter feet, but most are probably considering him a Center.
Correct me if I’m wrong Bud, but I believe he was in the weight maintaining group in the Seminoles nutrition program. So, it’s likely that he threw on some more weight since his graduation and can continue to get stronger and heavier. I think 293-295 is reasonable to expect from his weigh-in.
He’ll probably lift in the middle of the pack, not standing out but doing nothing to kill his stock. What he does have going for him his is incredible fundamentals. I think, fundamentally, he may be one of the most polished lineman to come out since Jake Long. This should go a long way with scouts and management.
