I thought this would have been covered by someone else by now, but I can't find it. What are the needs for the 2012 class?
And talking immediate needs. certainly some positions you take at least one or two per year, but what we are looking at is two fold:
1) what will be needed for 2012?
2) what will be the positions of need in 2013 that typically require a bit of growth (e.g. OL/DL) from high school or seasoning (e.g. QB if that was a need) or you can sign in 2012 and redshirt (e.g. a kicker)?
Offensively, Fisher and crew seems to have anticipated 2012 needs already. Two of the top 3 running backs will be seniors this fall and one a junior, but Gran has three freshmen to work with this fall, preventing FSU from having to 'press' in 2012 just to fill out the roster. I see only one potential "immediate" need in 2012 -- FSU's top two returning TEs are seniors (assuming Reilford returns) leaving three young TEs that are unproven at the college level (Nick O'Leary and redshirt freshmen Sessions and Tye).
Defensively, with two outstanding classes in '10 and '11 it is hard to see apparent holes, unless there is an excess of disappointments. Possible exception is DE. Historically FSU's best teams have rotated 3 deep at DE, and if Jenkins goes pro after 2011, FSU will need some freshmen to provide depth. Two or three DEs should be a priority.
But it is hard to believe that the biggest need may just be kicking. Reminds me of a time in the 90s when Bobby Bowden was asked what he was most concerned about going into one fall, and he said "kicker". A national commentary noted that one must really be loaded if kicker was a coach's biggest concern. This fall, Shawn Powell is a senior and Hopkins will be a junior. Fisher will have to find a punter and start looking for a kicker. There is still the luxury of signing a kicker this fall and redshirting him, or waiting a year. But a plan must be in place.
Worth noting that FSU already has commitments from a kicker Roberto Aguayo, who ranks #1 at kicker and #3 at punter by Kohl's Kicking Camp; Dante Fowler Jr, a DE prospect; and Chris Casher, an athlete who may play college at DE or TE.
