Christian Ponder Draft Scouting Report via Mocking the Draft
SBNation's draft site takes a look at Ponder.
Snip:
Decision making: Ponder possesses an excellent feel for the quarterback position. He has a lot of savvy in his game especially when executing screen plays. His ability to effectively decoy on screens allows for his target to pick up an extra couple yards. Ponder was calm and collected as he made his pre snap reads and showed he could identify potential blitzes. I was pleased to see that Ponder was comfortable going through his progressions. He routinely set and reset his feet while going across the field looking to his secondary targets. While a lot of quarterbacks tend to lock on to their primary target, Ponder is able to influence the defense with his head and eyes.

"While a lot of quarterbacks tend to lock on to their primary target, Ponder is able to influence the defense with his head and eyes."
Actually I wish this were the case but it isnt entirely true…. in multiple games this year I caught Ponder staring down his first read over and over again. Play after play. Was actually a little more common than I want to admit.

And was likely more related
to a lack of trusting the WR’s and replacing OL every few games. He deserves the credit he’s receiving.
Go Noles coming from Atlanta!!!
Im sure there is a valid reason. I am only saying that I have personally seen different in more than a couple games. Just a statement, not a judgement.
Plus I think Ponder deserves more credit than he has been given by most people. I was on the CP7 heisman train heavily!

I'm w/nolefan
Think Ponder’s junior year. When he can trust his receivers to be where there supposed to be he is lethal. Admittedly I paid more attention to CP7 than other QBs, but I think he’ll be a more than serviceable NFL starter. Some fanbase is going to be very pleasantly surprised

A team is going to sit down with Ponder and fall in love with him and I think he jumps some of the other guys. This isn’t a very good QB class as far as guys being ready to play and i think theres no doubt Ponder is the most ready to play right away.
My prediction is he goes to a team running the W. Coast offense in the late 1st early 2nd and ends up playing some snaps and maybe starting before his rookie year is over, ie Colt McCoy in Cleveland or Max Hall in Arizona. All of this will be because of his understanding and high level of execution of the underneath and short to intermediate passing game along with his good and repeatable mechanics (thanks Jimbo, recruits take notice).

If it is a late first
it will almost certainly be a team trading up or possibly back to get there. Given what he faced his sophomore year in terms of an offensive line early (a young line that they prepared to run block first), he could do well on a bad offensive team, at least do better than most with a bad line. In short, he could be an outstanding pick for a rebuilding team. Since he’s really not a top of the draft pick, I’d agree with the early 2nd range.

There is a reference to Ponder's Mechanics
His footwork, ball placement, etc..
The question is, is this due to superior coaching or just Christian being Christian? I believe we will find out with EJ. If it is coaching, and we place 2 QBs in a row high in the draft with great write ups like this, I think you will start to see more QBs trying to come to FSU.
E.J. doing well
is really crucial to FSU’s long term success for the reasons you cite. If E.J. has an outstanding ‘11, FSU could sign a top QB in 2012 who’d look to redshirt.

A big reason there was such a drop-off from his junior to senior season..
He lost 2 out of his top 3 targets, Rod Owens led the team in Receptions and recieving yards last year if i’m not mistaken and Jarmon Fortson Was 3rd on the team in receptions and yards but led them in Recieving TD’s if you watch tape from Ponder’s Junior year you will see a lot of PONDER to FORTSON connections they were developing a real chemistry. Senior year our recievers were notoriously one of our weaker positions with New guys being thrown into bigger roles after Fortson was kicked off the team although they got better and better as the season went on. I can’t wait to see CP7 in the pros and i would love to see him outlast Tebow!
Questionable arm strengh
someone plz post the pass from last years USF game that got called back for holding. Ponder when fully health has plenty of arm strength. Hope he can stay healthy at the next level.

This was the response...
“That wasn’t a very powerful throw…and I’m pretty sure an above average NFL CB would have intercepted, or at least knocked it away. Not very much zip on the pass- but it was perfect for what was needed. As I said, he’s going to make some team very happy if he can sit on the bench for a season and improve his arm strength.”
Saaay whaat??
Looks like
a lot of folks have him going to the Niners. Not that I’m a huge SF fan, but I love it. A couple of years with Harbaugh, no injuries, and regaining his deep ball, and I’m in. They have a nice ground game, a couple of possession receivers, and the potential of Crabtree. Of course, I’m for anywhere he can get some early PT so we can see what he does in the bigs.

Also the perk of our boy usurping a former Urban QB from the mantle
Anything that Jimbo can hold over Urban is fine by me
If Harbaugh picked him that would be pretty huge.
Harbaugh knows QBs pretty damn well, so if he takes Ponder in the 2nd that would be a strong vote of confidence for CP7’s potential at the next level.

most mocks ive seen
have the niners taking him in the fourth; not a great start, but could be a bradyesque story (but lets not get ahead of ourselves); one would think someone else might pick him up before that, but who knows

Those mocks are flat wrong.
He won’t last past round 2 pick 9, I have to believe the Redskins will take him there, assuming no trade-backs.
maybe
it looks like McNabb won’t be around; i would like to see him go higher, but the more i think about it, the more i like him in sanfran
