Florida State Spring Game: What To Watch

Spring games like this really don't serve as great indicators of anything, so forming strong opinions after you watch the Florida State Spring Game Saturday would be unwise. Generally, I only take the feel of the game and look for fundamentals in looking at specific players or positions, but here are just a few things I'm going to be paying attention to this weekend.  Watching whole units really doesn't make sense, as they will be out of sync due to players missing the game with injury.

This post brought to you by the Florida State Boosters. Here's a message from Michael Espada, your direct link for Seminole Boosters:

Hey guys, just wanted to introduce myself. I have been working with Tomahawk Nation to get the TN Booster & Ticket Information Page added into the site to help everyone with not only questions on season tickets but also questions about boosters. I work with all the offices involved in these processes so I can help you out with anything related to the boosters or tickets.  If you want to get new season tickets in a great area, switch your old seats, alter your booster level, or have any question about the boosters, please get in touch with me. I have all of my contact information listed:

  • 1 v. 1s: There aren't going to be a whole lot of times where a first-team player is matched up against the same, but there will be a few.  Receiver Rodney Smith on corner Greg Reid should be a good one.  Keep a close eye on center/guard Jacob Fahrenkrug against nose guard Anthony "Amp" McCloud.  Guard Bryan Stork on Everett Dawkins will also be one to watch.
  • New Starters: Florida State is breaking in six (or seven) new starters.  Keep an eye on: the aforementioned Fahrenkrug and Stork, but also QB EJ Manuel, DE Cornellius "Tank" Carradine, DE Bjoern Werner, LB Vince Williams, LB Christian Jones, and (new position) S Lamarcus Joyner.
  • Young Backups: Pay attention to linebacker Telvin Smith, DT's Darious Cummings & Cameron Erving, DE Dan Hicks, RB Devonta Freeman, WRs Kenny Shaw & Jared Haggins, and TE Will Tye.
  • Defensive Movement: How does the defense move about?  Last year was huge improvement, but still quite rough, given the fact that many upperclassmen had received almost zero coaching in a zone scheme through three years in the program.  Look to see how players hedge with their zones, properly align using the hash, adjust to motion, etc.
  • Alumni Flag Football Game (click link to see impressive list of former players coming back to play).

I would watch special teams for him.

'11: Minimum Goal: 9-3 Regular Season. Given FSU's non-con slate, don't care who the 9 are.
'10: 7th in offense, 41st in defense. Division Champions. 10-4. (6-3)
'09: 8th in offense, 88th in defense. 7-6 (4-4)

No burn a safety in a spring game???

Or no burn in the regular season thus watch what he can do on special teams were he’ll contribute?

EJ

I want to see EJ completing 20-30 yard passes accurately against the zone. That will tell me a lot about his progression as a QB and what we can expect out of the passing game. Although he needs to be able to make all sorts of throws, I find 30 yard pass and catch in stride to be one of the separating throws between ok QBs and good QBs.

Not gonna be happening with the protection he’ll receive, and the downpour that will happen.

what's the point

Of watching 25 flares and screens? You won’t know anything about your QB that way.

Jimbo knows all he needs to from practice

He doesn’t need a spring game to tell him anything.

so why bother having a spring game?

Why not tell us all to go screw ourselves?

Oh right, because they want money and we pay money based on how excited we are and we get excited by seeing football and not toss.

by MasterWolf on Apr 14, 2011 2:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes?

He may have EJ throw a few deep for a couple of reasons, but the emphasis will be on what Jimbo thinks needs to be worked on. And with the patchwork o-line that EJ will have in front of him, consistent down field passing isn’t going to happen. I don’t think we’re going to learn anything about the offense whatsoever. But it will still be fun to watch the guys play.

You know its a good time for FSU

when the ol timers are talking trash prior to a flag football game. Gonna be a GREAT weekend

by FSU on Apr 14, 2011 2:17 PM EDT up reply actions

i told a coworker (an old school Michigan fan) they were talking smack on twitter

his first reaction was “arent they both retired former FSU stars? why would they be talking smack, especially in April?” i got to respond with “yes, but its because Pdub thinks he can take Prime in the spring game this weekend”

we both agreed that we dont know about Warrick, but you know Deion is probably in great shape. so when you put that together with Brad Johnson (hypercompetitive and still in great shape) it might look like a miniature NFL game with all FSU alumni going on there. how awesome is that?

stock into that. The game was fairly relaxed last years even with all the names they had. There was a great recreation of a Warrick catch though.

THIS is the match-up I wanna see. Simply, because all the disparaging remarks I’ve had to listen to from (insert just about every fanbase from D-1 Colleges) about Reid being, “small, smallish, short, too short, tiny, not big enough, mini, not tall, not tall enough” to cover in the secondary. well until hntdeerliv4noles makes an appearance,

this meteorology student will try his best. Things look pretty soggy for the early tailgaters. The front should pass between 2AM and 11AM with the best chance for severe weather coming in the early morning till about 8AM. Most of the rain and severe weather should be overnight so lingering showers/thunderstorms is what we will have to deal with. Everyone driving up from SoFla will see some rain on their trip up.
So your bratwurst may get a little damp if you plan to hang around outside Doak all day, but the game should be excellent.

2- Should see if he keeps the stick and I know he has the speed.

3- Seeing the rb situation before the freak (Wilder) get on campus.

4- I would also like to see EJ do well but more importantly Tricket. People seem to forget that he was a stud qb coming out of hs. Not just a coaches kid who got a free ride.

by pb4957 on Apr 14, 2011 12:07 PM EDT reply actions

i wouldnt call Trickett a stud, but he wasnt a slouch either

but either him or Secord need to get their act together, they have both looked very average (last spring game and the scrimmage). need to pick it up if either of them hopes to pick up the garbage time this year.

just curious

have you actually seen them throw this year? Or are you more basing off last year’s video of them? I know Trick was a Fr and Secord a Soph. then. I expect they have gotten better.

But remember, the 2nd and 3rd team OL is really more like 3rd string and a bunch of walk ons right now. I expect them to struggle heavily due to pressure, but I don’t think we can judge them fairly with what they’ll be playing with.

"I wish you loved me as much as you love TomahawkNation!"

by freshcollegeboy on Apr 14, 2011 1:52 PM EDT up reply actions

the OL criticism is fair

i watched the spring game live last year, and Secord looked ok, Trickett like an EE. i expected the passing numbers this scrimmage to be kinda bad, but not less than 35% for both of them, with a pick and no TDs. those arent inspiring numbers.

but no, since practices are closed, nobody (including me) has seen them throw since then, so i have to take the post practice comments with a grain of salt, as usual, and go on what i have actually seen. and they have both seemingly performed like they were battling for 3rd string instead of 2nd. i dont expect starters out of either of them, but i havent heard anything encouraging to make me believe there has been improvement since the last time anybody saw them play.

Dan Hicks

He’s gotten bigger and I heard he had 4-5 sacks in the second scrimmage. I know we’re pretty injured along the O-line but I still want to see him dominate whoever he goes up against. If he can show out I’ll be much more comftorable about our depth at the DE position.

Bradham

He might not of lived up to expectations, but the guy is solid has led our team in tackles the past two years and he has the ability to be downright nasty anytime. I think the LB depth chart on our team is just littered with talent and it will only push guys like 13.

Sorry, Didn't mean to post that..Header didn't match the title, as I reread your post

In my opinion, a “dominant” guy is a guy that impacts a significant amount of plays in a game, and that an OC will have to scheme around.

I just don’t see that in Bradham. He’s a good, not great LB that very well could be dominant, but isn’t.

Have to consider

Bradham was under Chuck Amato and a super dysfunctional defense for his first two years though who’s coaching technique was simply “go get him”. While the performance hasnt matched what a 5* SHOULD be, he is head and shoulders better than other LBs who came in the same class.

Now Christian Jones, yes, I can see him making some noise in his second year here.

And that would be very good progress, as far as I'm concerned.

Basically cutting the ranking in half two years in a row. Would you also agree that the pass D should be better than run D?

Tyranny is tyranny. Let it come from where it may.

by Dr.KennethNoisewater on Apr 14, 2011 5:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes.

The added depth will keep the 2-deep from wearing down late season. But, it’s basically the same guys that will get the majority of snaps. They will be better, sure. But, they got pushed around by the good O-lines 5-6 games into the season. I expect them to be better and deeper, but not dominant.

We may have the best group of corners in the country. Safety will get a big upgrade with Joyner (I believe) or one of the incumbents will have to improve considerably to keep him off the field. And I count pass rush (very good DE’s) as part of pass defense.

So, to sum it up….I expect the pass D to be better than run D.

Tyranny is tyranny. Let it come from where it may.

by Dr.KennethNoisewater on Apr 14, 2011 5:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Our 2-deep last year was really all we used. Now we’re expecting Cummings, Erving, and 1 or 2 FR to step in with our two-deep from last year. It’s been widely accepted that the reason our D-line fell apart was because of a lack of depth. Now we have that depth. Maybe the passing D will be better but I think our Run D will be pretty damn good.

by FTSNole on Apr 14, 2011 5:41 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't really disagree with any of that

and really didn’t say anything to the contrary. I do, however, think they got pushed around by a couple good O-lines before season fatigue became a factor.

Preston Parker is on the list, although he never graduated from FSU. I am really happy to see him back @ FSU and part of the Seminole tradition. He played with great intensity and took over a couple games when (IIRC) Antone was injured. Really happy to see him back t FSU mixing it up with his old teammates

I also want to see how well they play in traffic w/ quick slants, slip and bubble screens, and curls since we’ll be running a lot of 3 step drops.

People will be tailgating, there’s a concert, BBQ cookoff, the FSU circus is performing, and the football game starts at 4PM.

I would say being in the stadium an hour early would get you a decent seat. There really isn’t a bad seat in the house and with only ~50-60k fans there should be good seating for all.

'11: Minimum Goal: 9-3 Regular Season. Given FSU's non-con slate, don't care who the 9 are.
'10: 7th in offense, 41st in defense. Division Champions. 10-4. (6-3)
'09: 8th in offense, 88th in defense. 7-6 (4-4)

I think Moody would have to be a lot better (not just as good) than him to get his spot back, given that Joyner is younger.

You know what I find interesting...

Is that Nick Moody may be the most polarizing figure on this team. Some think that he may never start again, and will be be lucky to see PT with the talent we have coming in, and some think he is Eric Berry 2.0.

Amazing.

Who thinks he is Eric Berry?

Just wondering who’s opinions I can no longer respect. :)

Idiots mostly

Just because he knocks out an RB who is no larger than my grandmother, he is “the Enforcer” we desperately need at safety.

It’s been well documented on TN that Moody has some work to do, but posters on other sites don’t get the education benefit that the ones at TN do.

But didn't he end up running back that INT when he should have kneeled it?

I distinctly remember Jimbo yelling at him from the sidelines. I’ve been worried about his discipline since last year’s spring game when he laid a really hard hit (which was good) against his teammate (which was sort of bad) that should have been flagged for pass interference (which is what actually bothered me)

by MWM Nole on Apr 14, 2011 4:11 PM EDT up reply actions

He did run it back when he should have kneeled

He dropped the probability of winning from like 99.9% to 99.8%.

I don’t remember him getting flagged for PI last season.

PI: Spring game

And it was my opinion that he should have been flagged when he actually wasn’t

He will be playing safety but i dont know if he has the #1 spot

I want to know why in regards to the Alumni Flag Football game….y’all didn’t invite one “Pooh Bear” Williams!?!?

What? You’ve never heard of “Pooh Bear” Williams. Y’alls massive RB/FB in the early-mid 90’s. Was a part of the 1993 National Championship team if memory serves me right.

The names...

Tiger McMillian.. Pooh Bear…Shade Tree… Lot of great nicknames in the early 90s

by FSU on Apr 14, 2011 3:19 PM EDT up reply actions

and half of them were Deion's names for himself

One more thing I want to see...

You know how the glimmer/glitter guys are nice and take picks with kids and dont drink….well…I want to see their evil twins this pre season. Fat guys covered (half) in glitter thowing up beer and being seen on video choaking down some unknown pills while motorboating.

Did I say that out loud? Oh, I really just want to see some progress and no injuries.

I watch alot of ESPN.

In fact, i’m watching it now, and they just ran a bit about potential Heisman candidates. Can you guess who was mentioned? Some guy named Andrew Luck, a RB from Baylor, and who do you know, our very own E.J Manuel. Apparentley, we aren’t the only one’s who see potential greatness in him.

Its all good.

He’s a Dual Threat guy (I think he’s a track star). But unless Baylor wins something this year there’s no point in considering him. It’s Luck’s to lose.

Everyone should watch

Greg Jones, because Greg Jones is going to be all over that field running people over. Greg Jones.

I watched the Florida game replay on ESPN360 yesterday and I’m watching the Miami game today. Getting pumped for the Spring Game and the upcoming season!
