They don't call him 'Smart' for nothin'
Okay… C’mon… somebody had to…
I was prompted to think about Shaka because of a conversation on Around the Horn, which is stupid in itself, but
Obviously I don’t know the man’s career aspirations or if he has an affinity for Richmond, but I think he really missed a chance to game the system here. People put way too much stock into the team that got hot in March and made a run, and the media has depicted him as the second coming of Wooden. How likely is it that VCU will make another deep tourney run? Not likely. Who is going to look at the coach of VCU for the positions he could take right now? Is his stock ever likely to rise above its current status? I think he could’ve capitalized on some stupidity and scored some big dollars and advancement. Is he really that good of a coach? I don’t know. I don’t think anyone does. The sample size isn’t there.

But the key here is what he thinks
Its not whether or not he’s a great coach, they all think they are the best and just something is holding them back, look at recruits. At USC they had like Five 5 star Rbs at the same time because no matter if they had Reggie, they were convinced they would come in and earn some serious PT. Everyone thinks they are the stuff, and he isn’t going to go hey, I’m young but this might be the best chance I’ll ever get. Hes prob like ells yeah ima do this again and coach the lakers.
Or not.
but
he’s smart to pass up NC State. He’s competing for recruits and local press with NC, Duke, and to some extent football and Wake Forest. NC State is developing into a career killer for basketball coaches.

Oh I don't disagree with that
I’m referring more to the extension he signed. I assume he had better offers than NCSU, or could have were he to look.

I said the same thing when they reached the Final Four when talking to a bunch of VCU alums
I don’t think the extension prohibits him from looking at other schools in the future so it really does nothing but give him a raise as far as I can tell. NCState could have given him more money but there would also be more expectations, a tougher conference, and tougher in state recruiting. Considering most people here in Richmond don’t really follow basketball until the NCAA tournament (VCU is a hipster school) he has a pretty good gig going. What opportunities are out there for Smart after NCState. Miami, maybe, but is that much better than NCState or VCU?
I honestly don't know
The way the media was hyping him, I’m confident there would have been something. I’m just thinking in terms of capitalizing on your stock at its highest point. I don’t see it ever rising above where it just was.

I don't think there were many good opportunities.
Missouri and that’s really it. Arkansas was open but they hired a guy while Smart was still coaching VCU in the NCAAT, I believe.
MiNDSET? SWAG-ER-ISM!!!

Trick is right.
Wherever you are, Trick, you are wise, indeed.
Correct, Sir Trick.
Thanks tricknole!
You truly are one of God's treasures, Trick
NC State: ACC Basketball as Clemson: ACC Football
You are not a power. You were never a power. Stop thinking you are
Just because you are in North Carolina and play in the ACC, DOES NOT MEAN top talent wants to go to your school. You’re not Duke, Wake Forest or North Carolina so get over it.
Smart is not the first, but the SECOND coach to say not to that job.
